When I lived in Palm Beach, Florida, USA I had to park my car on the street, Seminole Ave., as the landlord said my car, a 1968 Cadillac Sedan DeVille, was too big to park back by my apartment. A "PALM BEACH RESIDENT" bumper sticker was only $1.00 for a year but if your car was parked without moving for 48 hours without a current sticker it would be towed away. The second apartment, on Oleander Ave., had a little driveway on each side of the fourplex so no more on-street parking. No reason to have a car in a big city in China anyway, public transport is amazing. The only reason people do is for face. Not that his car will do much on that front.
That’s not even a joke. Having a car in china can be a pain your ass sometimes especially an expensive car. It’s not just stupid ppl opening doors at your car but also cats sleeping on your car in parking garages and scratching all over, some ppl just may deliberately scratch your car for no reason when you park in your neighborhood. Once I saw a kid falling off his bike right onto my car door. Luckily that car was so shitty I didn’t even care
@@alvost6886 And usually anyone who has a nice car will park their car next to a nicer car because we all know they're gonna be extra careful driving off and not hitting anything
Many comments disparaging his points about costs but he does have a good case: when I lived in London and went away for 2 weeks or 4 weeks, I could park in front of or near my house and leave it there without payment for that period of time. Better off folks can leave their car in the driveway. You could also wash your car in the street or in the driveway. This was a few years ago and I think there may be some restrictions for environmental reasons in London and other cities now but it would not be as restrictive as China, particularly in towns. When I lived in Cambridge in the UK, the only time I paid for parking was when I took the car into the town centre and, even then, if I wasn't in a hurry and was prepared to walk, I could find a place to park for free and take a short walk into the centre ( nine years ago ). As for parking, I could park the car in front of my terraced house ( nothing grand, just a low to medium-priced house) and wash the car. I think people referring to him as stingy have got it wrong: being cost conscious is always wise for anyone who is not wealthy and it does not preclude the ability to be generous with the money that has not been needlessly wasted.
Same here ,I m living in Shenzhen, I have had my own car for over 3years, I never washed it outside even I had 12times for free washing ,, always wash my car by myself., in the basement parking area of my apartment (there is water overthere)
It's incredible how quickly dust and dirt builds up in China. I was having a conversation the other day about how in the U.K cleaning your floors and dusting etc only needs to be done maybe once a week whereas here if you go more than a day or two without cleaning everything is filthy.
taief miah I know that big cities are worse but this is something else and it is merely a byproduct of China's rapid development and the construction methods that they choose. It was just something I noticed. for example I have to clean the fans on my laptop every month or less because of all of the dust that they pull in.
Computers seem to suck in dust and accumulate it by design. I have the same problem here in NYC. and that dust isn't so bad for 40 days accumulation. The layer would be much thicker for 40 days here in an underground parking lot in NY.
This video helped me to appreciate life here in the Philippines more than ever. I still avoid car ownership and driving here as often as I can. A jeepney ride for P8 (about .16 cents USD) can not be beaten. A bus ride into Manila is very reasonable. At least there is space to wash and work on a car if we choose to. Our labour cost must be much lower as a car wash for my friend's "buggy" will be much less than what we see in the video. Thank you, serpentza, for posting, it is good to know what we would be facing should my wife ever pick up a contract in China.
We washed our car when I lived in China, but that's because we actually did have a driveway and garden hose. We lived in one of those gated communities that actually have houses, so it's definitely not the norm.
You know Serpentza, I've learned more about China from you then dozens of history books, movies, documentaries, news casts. You always talk about interesting and USEFUL things! Thanks a lot buddy!
You can wash your car in China. You just have to live in a nicer city/apartment building. My grandparents live in a large apartment in China and have a huge amount of parking lot space around the building and hoses to wash their car, because there is a garden in the parking lot.
I think he meant No Self Service facilities like in the US. If the car wash is not Automated by computer and machines, then you have to get out of the car and use the sprayer and brushes yourself. Most places in the USA with employees is called a "Detail Shop" and you will pay a premium price for someone to personally clean all of the nooks.
I don't think he meant it couldn't be done at all. The message he conveyed in this video was that self washing cars isn't as common in China as it is in the west.
It's quite possible he just didn't know that it was possible. I mean there's nothing to suggest he lives in one of the more expensive areas in Shenzhen. Even if he's making 20,000 rmb a month that doesn't really mean that much in Shenzhen. His girl being a doctor doesn't really mean much either. She probably doesn't make more than 20 either.
Chinese mainland construction style learned from Hongkong.citizens in urban areas live in apartments, they don’t have their own faucet outside the apartment.so they have to go to car washing shop.in suburban areas, they live in house and there are faucets.Apartment-city style has its advantages such as containing more populations, containing more commercial properties.also there are disadvantages such as not having enough room for everyone,no enough parking lots for each car.
Correction......you do NOT have to pay for parking 'everywhere' in China. I live in Foshan, not too far from Shenzhen (actually just south of Guangzhou) and apart from basement style paid car-parks below apartment blocks, my town of Shunde has only just opened it's first paid parking area! The large Jusco/Aeon shopping mall is FREE. Parking at Tesco and Walmart supermarkets is FREE. Apart from the new paid parking area, locals will park ANYWHERE......and I mean ANYWHERE. They wont care of they completely block the pavement/sidewalk. They won't care if they double park. They wont care if they park on the corner of junctions. They won't care if they park over a pedestrian crossing. If they can fit their car (even nose first), then they'll park there.
I started off this video thinking "man that sucks" but at 3:59 it changed to "man i wish america had $7 hand washes AND vacuum by a team of young boys who will also change your dead tail lights" The lights alone in america will run you $30 at the mechanic shop

I am never bored by yours and i hope you maintain the same quality as you continue making them. Thank you so much. You are very much appreciated and refreshing.
Moral of the story....... don't park next to any one from China (or California) unless you want at least 45% of your vehicle covered in dents and scratches from a$$holes.
sam Anderson Chinese from Beijing now lived in Texas for 5 years here, I've never had any trouble with the popo and had helped enough murican ppl and ppl from other countries to do parallel parking in narrow downtown spaces /wo back cam, the most common reason they gave me is they couldn't do it in a rental with no cam. All I'm saying is don't judge driving skills on race. One of my female friends who drives pretty ok would even voluntarily put on a "Caution, female Asian driver" bumper sticker just because she thought as an Asian female, she's supposedly a bad driver, I find that ridiculous.

wolfi e I live in one of the boroughs of NYC. I have my own garage, driveway etc. I have a hose if I want to wash my car. My block has numerous free open spots. That car he is driving is a death trap. I doubt it would pass inspection in Europe or the US.
Serpentza Do you have to buy liability car insurance in order to drive in China like you do in the states? Or risk facing a ticket if you get pulled over without it?
H3xdump In China the mandatory insurance is $120 a year and provide very minimum coverage, however, with a ok driving record and a new Camry and stuffs, the premium you are looking at is us$800 a year, collision and 50K usd liability. Which is muuuuuch cheaper than that in the states.
Mystic Virgo well, they make a killing in eastern europe, don't see why they wouldn't be successful there, tho i guess with the small labour costs it would probably be an alternative to these car washes as the cost would probably be the same
As long as people are paid so low amounts such a big investment wouldn't pay off. especially considering how shared goods are treated by a large number of Chinese you would have to put a lot of money in repairing etc
Mystic Virgo Labor is cheap there, but real estate is not. It'll cost you a lot more to have a large self serve facility than to have a small garage washing place with bunch of workers.
Too bad in China a foreigner can only own one location in one city max for businesses and homes. There are a lot of things that would make a killing in China but the government literally won't let you bring it there without a Chinese person being in charge.
iooi Nope. that conditions are only applied if u were Chinaman lol. BUT, Chinese women is very easy if you're a expat from developed country. No need to be rich, give something etc. Just stay awesome because most china gals fancy you.
My parents got free car wash roughly twice a month (with their bank account or something) and that includes interior cleaning, and the place is literally just outside their place. I do miss that cheap service whenever I go to brown bear car wash and spend 5 bucks and do a crappy job myself.... Edit: self service car wash is now becoming a thing in some big cities, where manual labor is getting more expensive.
That's interesting. Great video SZA. Here in Australia, there are times you're not allowed to was your car here either, though that has more to do with drought, and when the drought passes, you can wash your car again

For all of you coming to China and planning on owning a car : forget about it. It's fucking hassle. It will cost you an arm, a leg and your left testicle, even for a POS like Winston's. It's much better to live in a very central area, close to a subway station. Your rent will be probably a few k's more but in the end, it's really worth it. Plus, driving in China is a fucking nightmare. They simply don't respect any traffic rule. It's not rare to see people driving against traffic.
That looks like an 1157 lightbulb old school, I'm almost positive of it! Also you are backup light is out which would acquire a 1156 lightbulb more than likely, very impressive :-)
Interesting video. I've never used a car wash here in the UK. I think the lads did a good job and the cost was very cheap. Getting a new bulb with a quick fit was great service. Good choice of car for what you need.
In London there's no such thing as free parking either, only if you own a home with a driveway/garage. Most people park their car on the street which actually costs money, but is discounted for local residents. Although lately I think because of the kung flu the traffic wardens haven't been enforcing the rules, it's lovely :)
It’s like that for most big cities around the world, I think the difference in China is it’s like that everywhere. Try just driving in New York and you’ll go crazy, I see so many taxi drivers get into fights with Uber drivers all the time, pretty entertaining honestly
I have to disagree with everything you said. I was in China from 1995 to 2008 and go back every 6 weeks. I never once used one of these car washing places and always did it myself. Both in Beijing and Shanghai. Also thing thing about paying for parking everywhere is also untrue. You just have to know where to look.
One of my sons spent 6monthscin China when he was a high schooler on a mission trip and he told me that the Chinese drove with one hand on the wheel and the other on the horn and there really were no rules of the road there, you videos are very interesting, hopefully the cars they make are better than the things they sell here!!
I guess the dent thing is the same in every country, I live in Australia, when park in shopping centre, aviod parking next to a dirty or old car which the owner never seem to care, he/she will probably just slash your door when opening theirs
I agree with you that hand-washing your own vehicle can be a very satisfying activity. It's akin to brushing your cat or deworming your dog - taking care of your little buddy. Of course, it just can't compare to changing your vehicle's engine oil - that is positively orgasmic!
I was once in a room with four (4) people named Gene. In fact, there were only maybe 12 people in total, so 1/3 of us were Genes. It's one of those names where you tend to be the only one, so whenever someone says "Hey Gene", you answer, because they must mean you, right?
Eugene Polan oh yes! Infact i come from a part of the world where nobody has the name. I have spent my life explaining to every1 how its pronounced. " its a jean with a U"
I don't mind much, just as long as they don't call me late for dinner. I can tell when I became friends with someone by whether they call me "Eug" (sounds like "Yuge"), Eugene, or Gene. When folks greet me with a hearty "Hi Gene!", I sniff my armpit and reply "Hygiene's doin' jess fine thank you".
Any car enthusiast like me would be outraged by this, I detail my own car, if that got taken away from me, I'd rather die. Sounds aggressive, but it's one of the only things I get to look forward to when I'm not working

Especially among China's business clientele and hurt their ability to compete. If China being #1 is still important to them. The internet is going to have to be a part of that equation.

How does a lack of driveways prevent you washing your car? I used to live in a high rise apartment building, and there was a dedicated car wash bay in the parking garage, for residents who wanted to wash their car (or have someone come to wash their car).
I wondered, too. I assumed that he didn't really say that, and that if he was rude, Winston would have told us after he hopped out of the car. :D I love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Look how many views he has....that's why. I live here and can tell you he is full of crap. You can wash your car any where, get a bucket and some gallon jugs. The thing is maybe there are no hoses but also no enforcement of anything, wash your car anywhere, no one will approach you and tell you to stop, he is completely full of it. The only honest part is that maybe space is limited and you must use jugs of water. I really dislike these guys.

Chinese drivers don't care about any traffic rule. Trust me, I've driven many years in Shanghai, where we got the best drivers in China. If you follow the rules, you will be forever cut off by those idiots. If you are from the US or from Germany, you can't imagine that. I've driven in all 3 countries.
It really depends on where you live. The large cities in China are overcrowded, and the land is extremely expensive. Of course, there aren't many free parking places. If you know the location well, you can still find some. I managed to find some free space in Beijing and Shenzhen last year when I visit China. These are two of the four tier-1 cities in China and I am very familiar with them. In suburban and rural areas, there are plenty of free parking spaces. Actually, the labor is so cheap in China and washing a car costs a fraction of the price in the US. I have never thought of washing my own car when I lived in Shenzhen. When I moved to the US. I noticed the car washing is so expensive and the parking is extremely expensive in downtowns of San Francisco, NYC, Chicago, etc. In suburban US cities, it is easier to find free parking space than most tier-3 cities in China. Still, machine wash here costs more than a manual washing/detailing in China.
Damn bro I'm so envy to you, you can speak chinese fluently, meanwhile I'm asian and I can't speak chinese, my english also not so good, and yeah, that price of the car wash is so cheap and quite same as here in southeast asia. Btw I like your content, and keep it up bro!
no. but there is a camera all over the place, when you croos th red light, you got a ticket, by sms if you own the car (or the owner of the car will got the ticket)
They simply watch the real time camera footage and have people waiting at the roadsides for violent criminals, they'll block the road and stop every car if necessary.
Between the government of the united states, the police state of the united states, policies, etc... american citizens are spied on more than any other group - spied on by their own government. The police and the court system are quite draconian. Any surprise that there are considerably more americans behind bars than in any other country. Even worse considering the population difference between China and america
There's too many cars. . you couldn't have a car chase because it's impossible to get around the cars and speed anywhere. Most likely the guy attempting to run will get run over by a truck at an intersection.
serpentza you should rent a home with a parking space or you can rent a parking space. Less than 30 rmb a day is not expensive if you park in the public parking lot especially in Shenzhen
All cars depreciate..I have a 2017 Luxury vehicle and it's already lost 20% in less than a year.. that's life. It doesn't matter if you buy a cheap Chinese car or an expensive German car...and 150$ for parking is NOT expensive. I parked for 28 days at a Canadian long term parking lot and paid 171$ plus tax...so your expectations are unrealistic as parking is expensive EVERYWHERE. Good informative videos ..just loose the "complain complain" ritual as it just sounds like you are whining. Car wash here in Canada with Vacuum is over 50$..You also get dings and dents in ANY city...North American included..STOP blaming CHINA...from what I See, just being able to replace a blown taillight would cost you 65 $ here in Canada..plus booking the service etc...China actually seems like a great deal to me...!!!
@@StefanArandjelovic yeah I pretty much think the same, those prices sound reasonable to me, but I don't know what's the average salary eheh because with western income, China to us looks cheap, but I guess it's proportioned to the salaries
most luxury vehicles actually depreciate the QUICKEST. nobody wants to be paying for $2000 oil changes at dealerships since nowadays you cant even check your own oil. you busted a shock? thats another big dent in the pocket
Also make sure get your car windows tinted!! In China 98% percent of the cars in China is tinted which gives you privacy and also keeps you car from heating up inside.

Free parking is all space that could be used in a city for a bicycle path or a green strip..
I’m from Manchester uk and have lived in China for six years. I wash my car whenever I like. I rent a flat with my wife and we have an outside tap.
Is your wife Chinese?

LOL, Winston, I can just picture you washing your car in your suit.
carwash in philippines is $3 for a car, $4 if SUV/Van and the light bulb replacement is like 60 cents... up to you if you want to give a tip
hahaha that is bulls**t, most people who own a car in the Philippines drive their own car.
Sapiryan damn a light bulb cost 60 cent!!! I'm pretty sure here in the USA it would cost a lot more I mean my mom's g wagon cost $700 for a extra key
$150 for 40 Days is not bad
$3.75 a day, not bad at all
I wonder though, would his payments on that car actually be less than $150 a month?
there is free place to park your car in shenzhen ,idiot
I’ve never paid to park anywhere in my life and I’m a 45 year old and bought my first car when I was 15.

It's incredible how quickly dust and dirt builds up in China. I was having a conversation the other day about how in the U.K cleaning your floors and dusting etc only needs to be done maybe once a week whereas here if you go more than a day or two without cleaning everything is filthy.
My Sweet and Sour Life it's always like that in big cities.
look at London
taief miah I know that big cities are worse but this is something else and it is merely a byproduct of China's rapid development and the construction methods that they choose.
In the country it's polen from the trees, yellow layer daily. It's sharp and scratches the paint. Comes to the same in the end.

Still? Amazing...
Most places in the USA with employees is called a "Detail Shop" and you will pay a premium price for someone to personally clean all of the nooks.
he is not that rich, even he can afford it, he wont buy an expensive one..he think its not worth it.
Tre Centers no he didn't. You need to watch the video again lol
$140 for over a month of parking is not expensive
Indeed.
Yeah and I live in Germany and pay 20€ for a month. Not expensive.. huh
Wischmopps Its my house holders private parking and I’m renting 2 parking lots, each 25€
He's a tight ass pom
If it's a tenth of the price of the car i will call it expensive.
Try that in a first tier city like Shenzhen ;)
So Foshan doesn't give out tickets for blocking the sidewalk or fire hydrants? That would earn a parking ticket real fast in America.
I don't think many places in the US would get away with charging people for parking at their own apartment.
Maybe I should upload my own video and call it 'China Parking'......It would be sure to raise some interesting comments :-)
That's funny you are comparing parking cost in Shenzhen to "most places from the west". Try Manhattan. Should run you $630 something for 14 days.
damn, that car looks like a plastic toy
every car looks like a plastic toy these days
@@shizhangguo2963 i have bulldozer

I started off this video thinking "man that sucks" but at 3:59 it changed to "man i wish america had $7 hand washes AND vacuum by a team of young boys who will also change your dead tail lights" The lights alone in america will run you $30 at the mechanic shop
Atleast the workers get paid and pay decent tax. And more tax income means better infrastructure too.
You can just change your light bulbs yourself, it's pretty easy lol. Here in Romania one light bulb is 25 cents.
and in Canada triple that
Find a new mechanic...my mechanic charged me $4 for the bulb when they were doing the state inspection and noticed my brake light was burnt out.
"young boys" umm....creepy bro
Every one of your videos is ultra-interesting. I have watched many youtubers fall into the trap of feeling forced to make vids and as a result they produce rubbish. I am never bored by yours and i hope you maintain the same quality as you continue making them. Thank you so much. You are very much appreciated and refreshing.
Only you, Winston, can make a video griping about car wash and get a million views. That's why I am a patron.
lol, great comment! I'm finding his griping endearing and mesmerising....
And that's why I'm a nobody.
One of my female friends who drives pretty ok would even voluntarily put on a "Caution, female Asian driver" bumper sticker just because she thought as an Asian female, she's supposedly a bad driver, I find that ridiculous.
thanks for the great stereotype example in real life.
sam Anderson You won't wanna park next to a New Yorker they're the worst
I would NEVER parallel park. That's a GREAT way to damage your car. I only park on an end spot in the lot, if that isn't available, I leave.
sam Anderson don't park next to a Yankee unless you want dents and scratches.

It looks like the Chinese drive on the proper side of the road.
We in Japan will have to agree to disagree.
Awesome choice of Synthwave genre soundtrack music for the videos.
Excellent Video!!! Cheap Cars are the best kind of cars ---> Because they don't cause a lot of heart ache if they are being "slightly" damaged.
Hmm self wash car washes .. sounds like a business opportunity
They'll probably steal everything at the manual car wash , including the hose sprayers.
Too bad in China a foreigner can only own one location in one city max for businesses and homes. There are a lot of things that would make a killing in China but the government literally won't let you bring it there without a Chinese person being in charge.
Love the captions on this one

Good job Winston. While things like this may seem mundane to you they are actually eye openers for those of us who have never been to China.

It's much better to live in a very central area, close to a subway station. Your rent will be probably a few k's more but in the end, it's really worth it. Plus, driving in China is a fucking nightmare. They simply don't respect any traffic rule. It's not rare to see people driving against traffic.

Interesting video. I've never used a car wash here in the UK. I think the lads did a good job and the cost was very cheap. Getting a new bulb with a quick fit was great service. Good choice of car for what you need.
You can't fill up your car's gas in New Jersey.
In London there's no such thing as free parking either, only if you own a home with a driveway/garage.
Most people park their car on the street which actually costs money, but is discounted for local residents.
Although lately I think because of the kung flu the traffic wardens haven't been enforcing the rules, it's lovely :)
LondonSpade if you know where to look, there's loads of free parking, but the closer you get to central London the harder it gets
You pay for parking on the curve!!!
Keith Perron yeah, he just doesnt know where to look.
It's not everywhere. There are places where people are considerate enough that trying not to scratch other people's cars is standard practice.
Come to Western Australia and you can film while I drive you around :)
It's great hearing how other cultures operate....!!!

I agree with you that hand-washing your own vehicle can be a very satisfying activity. It's akin to brushing your cat or deworming your dog - taking care of your little buddy. Of course, it just can't compare to changing your vehicle's engine oil - that is positively orgasmic!

Eugene Polan hello!! The first time i am actually talking to another Eugene!!!

The Fox If China wants to continue to do business in the country. Which I assume they do. Since it's bringing them in billions of dollars a year. They would be wise not to clamp down on it completely.
I read the article and it does state. That doing so too aggressively may give China a bad image.
Especially among China's business clientele and hurt their ability to compete. If China being #1 is still important to them. The internet is going to have to be a part of that equation.

I like how the BO stench of the car wash guy remains in the car when you leave the car wash and drive off.
Kind of like a farewell gift 🤓!
Do chinese police pull you over for minor things such as a broken tail light? I know american police will do that if they have nothing else to do
no. but there is a camera all over the place, when you croos th red light, you got a ticket, by sms if you own the car (or the owner of the car will got the ticket)
DavidRsaid Chinese traffic police concentrate on traffic accidents and never deal with violent crimes.
