We burn white oak in our wood stove, but I used to struggle to determine when this hardwood was ready to burn. To prevent creosote buildup, my wood stove manufacturer strongly recommended burning hardwood with a moisture content of 20% or less. As a result, I decided to purchase a wood moisture meter from Amazon. It works exceptionally well and eliminates the guesswork, making it easy to know when the wood is safe to burn.

A wood moisture meter is actually a really useful thing we should have. Not only for the firewood, but also for the lumber we have. Thanks for the tip! I had to look up what creosote is. It's probably best to have as little as possible of that building up in your chimney...

@@northernhomestead2024 You may want to run a chimney brush down your chimney yearly. I run a chimney brush down my chimney yearly just for safety. The last thing any of us want is a chimney fire.

We actually got the professional chimney sweep to come and do it this year, so that he could let us know if there was anything wrong. So much soot came out of that chimney! According to his opinion it had never been cleaned before and he could tell us some more useful things we needed to know about it, so we can do some necessary repairs this coming summer (add that to the list of projects). I did "inherit" a chimney brush from my dad, so with 2 fires on the go all winter, I might give it two sweeps (is that the correct use of the word?) each year.

Drone footage sounds amazing. Looking forward to the videos in 2025. Must say that Drone footage has absolutely changed and enhanced video production.

It's really going to take it to the next level and hopefully we can catch some cool wildlife as well (I have yet to see a bear!)

Hi Vince, just found your channel through this video. The snow is beautiful but I'm sure so challenging to take care of your animals, staying warm and taking care of your homestead. New Subscriber so looking forward to following your journey in Northern Sweden.
Hope your Christmas is as Merry as the amount of snow you have. Wishing you the best in the year 2025.

Great to hear that you're going to follow us! The nature is stunning here and hopefully with each video we're getting better at capturing it. So far we've been lucky with the snow compared to last year. It started in the first week in October and we finally saw the ground again in May. It felt amazing to actually walk on solid ground again after such a long winter! The snow certainly brings it's challenges, but it's the freezing cold that I'm usually most worried about. Things break that you wouldn't think about and I hate to see our animals suffer, so everyday I'm working on improving their situation, so that they are cozy and happy.
Merry Christmas to you too and all the best for 2025!

Hope you had a Merry Christmas, also wanted to let you know that we will be shouting out your channel on our Livestream on 1/8/2025 at 8pm CST here in Oklahoma USA. I know you are 7 or so hours ahead of us but we hope you can join us. Either way we really enjoy your channel, and we want others to know about you and watch you along your journey.

That's amazing that you want to give us a shout out. Really kind of you! You're right, we're 7 hours ahead of you, so it'd be 3am for us. It's around this time that we usually get woken up by the cat, telling us it's too cold outside for him to do his business, so perhaps I'll (Vince) will join if I can. Otherwise we'll definitely check it out when we wake up.
So glad you enjoy our channel!
