Northern Homestead
In 2020 we decided to finally take the big leap and sold everything in order to follow our dream to self sufficiency. We started living in a caravan where we had our first daughter and then moved to the north of Sweden in 2021. After 1 year of living here we bought a piece of land in the middle of nowhere where we moved to after having our second daughter in 2023. Follow us on our channel and watch work hard towards our goal of growing our food, raising animals and being self sufficient as much as we possibly can. We're on a search for freedom and independence!
Snowy Walk Around The Homestead
Join Vince on a snowy walk around our homestead as he talks about the current ongoing homesteading projects. There's updates on the sheep, chickens, septic tank and one at the end that we're very excited about! We hope you'll all have a wonderful Christmas (or holidays if you don't celebrate Christmas) and we'll see you at the next vlog!

Blizzards | Water Troubles | Sheep Barn Upgrade | Sick Sheep Care - Vlog 11
This week started with major issues when our septic line from our septic tank got blocked, after which we moved on to a more fun task upgrading our sheep barn and swiftly had to deal with the aftermath of a couple of freezing blizzards. Our sick sheep are slowly recovering in the meantime, but we're not out of the woods yet literally and figuratively. If you wonder how they got sick, you can se...
Tour Of Our $27k House In The North Of Sweden
The time has come to finally take a tour of our wonderfully cozy Swedish house all the way up in Lapland. It came with 1,2 acres/0,5 hectares of land, a huge barn and a garage which we already converted to a chicken coop. We've lived here for one and a half years and are partially off-grid with plans to be completely off-grid. If we missed anything that you want to know, drop us a comment!
Insulating Sheep Barn | Sheep Care | Christmas Beef Stew - Vlog 10

Join us for our tenth vlog where we are taking care of our sick sheep (if you missed why they are ill, watch vlog 9). And since we're due some very cold and snowy days, we're working on insulating the sheep barn more to keep the healthy sheep as cozy as possible, for as little money as possible, so we have to get creative. Furthermore Vince cooks up a French classic "Boeuf Bourguignon" with a S...
The Northernmost Chicken Breed in Sweden
In this video Vince tells the story of how the Bjurholms chickens were discovered and what their qualities are. It's a very special breed that is not only easy to keep up north, but keeps surprising us all the time with how hardy they are! We thought it was one of the fewer breeds that eats snow, but it seems that there's more out there. Let us know if your chickens eat snow too in the comments!

Making hand-made hay bales in the north
Hi Vince, the Thumbnail photo on this video was really beautiful with the Northern Lights in the background. On clear nights in the Winter months you probably see the Northern lights quite a bit. With the amount of Snow and Cold temperatures you face each year these 10 Essentials are more important than ever.
Nice 😍👍🏻
Hi Vince, enjoyed this video of things you will do differently in 2025. Can't imagine cutting your Hay by hand with a Hand Sickle. Glad that you are considering getting a Baler to help make things more efficient. One good thing with Asparagus is that once you go through all of the work to plant it, they regrow from year to year, without much work.
Thank you! I'll be doing the scything again next summer and will get some more footage (unless i find gold in the ground and then I might reconsider buying machines). I look forward to nice homegrown fresh asparagus!
Hi Vince and family. Great video to remember cutting down your Christmas tree and setting it up as a family. With the abundance of Evergreen trees there, you have a wide variety to choose from. Love the design of that Snow Master trailer. Great design to have that high hatch to open and lots of storage to transport things easily. It sure held a nice load of the wood to heat your house. The fresh coat of Ice on the trees looked really amazing with the Sun shining down on them. As destructive as Ice can be it sure makes for a beautiful scenery for the video. How far is your nearest neighbor and also how far are you from town to get supplies for living? Looks like you and your wife got plenty of exercise with you climbing the ladder to mount the long boards and your wife carrying all of those bundles of wood. You have a beautiful family and really enjoy your videos.
Very happy to hear you enjoy our videos and thanks for the compliments! Those trailers are very handy. It took us two years before we bought one and once we had, we couldn't believe we waited that long. It's so handy. They're actually snowmobile trailers, but of course, you can transport whatever you like in them. Our nearest neighbour is almost 3km away. There are some summer houses in between, but those people only come for about 2-3 months of the year. They are 1,5km away. You can also go the other direction on our dirt road and then you have the next neighbour 19km away. So you can say we're nicely secluded. Town is about a 30min drive, so really not that far, which is quite nice for dropping off the girls at school. We are getting very fit out here indeed! I lost many kilos this first summer...
You have done a great job with this tour!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it ☺
Hi Vince and family. The footage of Amber collecting wood with you in her own Purple Wheelbarrow was so cute. Glad that both of the lambs are now doing better but that had to be scary with their body temperature going so low. They do make warming boxes for calves born out in the cold to warm up and they come back pretty quickly. They would probably work great for any of your lambs when needed. Must say those Chocolate Chip muffins looked amazing. I'm sure they are a great snack when coming in from the cold doing chores.
She's really at that age now where she wants to help with everything, so thankfully they've got all these outdoor tools for children up here. We even got little snow shovels for her. She loves it! It was real scare with the lambs, cause they just can't tell you what's wrong with them and we've got no experience. So it felt really good to see them get betters slowly. Those warming boxes sound like a really good idea. It would be easier than to transfer them from the sheep barn to our growing room each time. I also hate to separate them from the flock. Caroline is getting better and better at baking, which is a nice skill to have out here and a nice little boost indeed to have in between the chores!
Hi Vince, thanks for sharing this interesting story of the lady and The Northernmost Chicken Breed in Sweden. Must say the colors are really amazing. I like the lighter Gray colored ones the best. Glad that the gentlemen that she sold her Roosters to was willing to work with her and so could keep her flock going by returning a Rooster to get fertilized eggs to hatch.
Yeah, it's a lovely story, especially because it came so close to not happening like you say! We also had a rooster from the original flock that was really golden. I had never seen anything like it. Sadly he died quite early on due to an injury he must've gotten from the move to our place.
Hi Vince and family. That Hay makes good insulation but it made me a little nervous to see the Hay so close to the hot light bulb in the ceiling. It would be a disaster for that to catch fire from the lightbulb. That male black lamb looks so weak on this older episode so it is great to know that he is now doing better and standing. Going backward now to catch up on some of your previous videos. The Beef stew looked amazing. I never tried putting diced Bacon in my stew so will have to give that a try. Notice that you cook your potatoes separate. I usually cut up my potatoes and cook them along with the Meat and carrots. The Red wine looked like a nice addition for flavor as well. Always nice to see the majestic Evergreen trees surrounding your homestead and the colorful Sunrise and Sunsets on the videos.
That's a really good point you make about the hot light bulb, but I think the hay bales might look closer on camera than what they actually are. I had another look, but there's no way for them to hit the bulb, should they fall. But I'm glad you said it and I'm going to go through the sheep barn and make sure no such accident is possible in any other way. The bacon certainly adds a nice layer of flavour and usually I would add herbs, but this Swedish Glögg is like a Christmas wine and has a bunch of spices in it already. It's actually the first time that I cook the potatoes separately and I must say that it was quite nice, but when you cook them in the stew they do get that extra flavour. Happy you like the scenery! I'll certainly keep it in each vlog.
All those mirrors are also reflecting light. Before you decide to remove them, cover them for a while first and check your light level!
That's a really good point! Hadn't even thought about that. I'll certainly give your suggestion a go to experience the difference. Thank you!
I see that you have chemtrails way up there too! Central Indiana usa too...sad!
Yes, it's a real shame. It's not much in winter, but last summer there were many blue skies that were turned into hazy ones...
Now i know about the predators
Plenty of those around!
Keep plugging along! You're doing great!
Thank you for the support!
Could you please tell us the name brand of the woodstove? Thanks

Are there wild animals there? Love your place! Glad we found your channel
Yes there are. I would say we see foxes the most, but the other day we almost drove into an elk and it's child. We also have bears around us, but haven't seen them yet and I saw some Lynx tracks in the snow last week. Glad you joined our channel!
Hi Vince and Family, whatever the nutrients that Vince put in the water for the lambs seemed to really help the mostly Black lamb stand as he seemed to drink more than the White one. Have to say that it was very perceptive for your daughter Amber to relate the sheep laying down of the sheep to being dead. Even though it wasn't dead it was very weak. The Homestead life can be challenging but what a great environment to raise children. My condolences for having Septic Tank problems. Especially when it is so cold it makes dealing with it all the more difficult. Hope it has been working ok now, since making the video. Enjoy your content. Keep up the great work and videos.
It seems to have helped the white lamb as well, but we found out why she isn't standing (although she does try) and that's because she's got a problem with right hind leg. We'll have more of an update on that in the next vlog hopefully. Amber's a very perceptive girl. She's been like that from when she was a baby, always observing. We're starting to get the flow of homesteading mixed with family life and I think she's feeling that as well and enjoying it more. As one of our subscribers pointed out to me, I was actually quite lucky to be doing it in the cold weather, cause that made the whole ordeal a lot less pungent!! For now it's functional again... Love that you enjoy our content!
Very true statement about the cold weather helping subdue to Septic Tank odor.
Certainly!
Drone footage sounds amazing. Looking forward to the videos in 2025. Must say that Drone footage has absolutely changed and enhanced video production.
It's really going to take it to the next level and hopefully we can catch some cool wildlife as well (I have yet to see a bear!)
Hi Vince, just found your channel through this video. The snow is beautiful but I'm sure so challenging to take care of your animals, staying warm and taking care of your homestead. New Subscriber so looking forward to following your journey in Northern Sweden. Hope your Christmas is as Merry as the amount of snow you have. Wishing you the best in the year 2025.
Great to hear that you're going to follow us! The nature is stunning here and hopefully with each video we're getting better at capturing it. So far we've been lucky with the snow compared to last year. It started in the first week in October and we finally saw the ground again in May. It felt amazing to actually walk on solid ground again after such a long winter! The snow certainly brings it's challenges, but it's the freezing cold that I'm usually most worried about. Things break that you wouldn't think about and I hate to see our animals suffer, so everyday I'm working on improving their situation, so that they are cozy and happy. Merry Christmas to you too and all the best for 2025!
Caroline, I am watching this video for the second time 😊 I thought this kind of video should be watched again, this time even with making some notes 🤩
That's so nice to hear, it was my goal to portray the true reality of homesteading so that it can help others!
@@northernhomestead2024 hum ja hihi, Huisje gekocht in september 2023. Klaar is Kees 😁.
Hele fijne kerstdagen toegewenst!
The house is packed with all the usual family 'stuff' but in a smaller home - and with all the appliances ! - it works because you know where everything is & get used to navigating around it all. Most British homes are smaller than nominal American ones, but when you have to pay a heating bill, no matter how, unless you have access to lots of free wood which you have to cut & lug around, there is no escaping the bills. Solar panels of course these days makes things cheaper - but those have to be installed - hence why I still have not 'gone there' ! A home in a snowy winter still needs a water supply - so a well with no freezing pipes too !! Thanks for the tour - a nice, cozy place with all 'mod cons' & we can see how comfortable it is because the lady of the house had bare arms !!!
A smaller home certainly saves on energy and there's less cleaning, which is probably our favourite advantage! Really happy you enjoyed the tour! It's certainly cozy and that lady of the house is Scottish so that's why she had bare arms as they're used to miserable cold weather 😂
ILMA ON RAIKAS
Yes, we heard that the paint is so cheap because it's a by-product of the copper mines. We're jealous of your sauna! Would love to have one of our own!
Vraagje.
You live and you learn...
Wonderful little dream home!
It really is!
???! Not sure what you want to say. Off grid means you don’t rely on power, water, heat from companies. You are independent. Internet and phone access don’t makes you dependent. It’s a personal choice.
Caroline agrees with you. You can see in the video that she thinks I'm crazy lol! But hear me out. I think that the definition of the grid is changing. Like you say, internet and phone access don't make you dependent as it's a choice, but that's changing and in some countries quicker than you think. Take Sweden for example. They've been pushing for a cashless society for a long time here, which is happening in more and more countries, but Sweden is one of the front runners. For now you can still pay with cash in some places, but not many and you can of course pay with your card as well (for now). But to gain access to your bank account you need an app (here the app is called BankID). You don't only need this app to access your bank, but also to file taxes, get government allowances, get your child into pre-school etc. It's still possible to do these things by avoiding the internet (we did in the beginning), but it's getting harder and harder and soon, if you want to be off-grid, you'll also have to be self-sufficient, cause if you don't have internet, you won't have access to anything. So for now I agree with you, in most countries you can still be off-grid and have internet, but I think we're more dependent on the internet than we think and soon, it'll no longer be a choice...
My favorite part of the house is the awesome old wood stove.
It quickly became mine as well when we moved in!
It was great to see all the creatutes big and small in a daylight 😊
Yeah, we have to be quick to catch that daylight right now!
We burn white oak in our wood stove, but I used to struggle to determine when this hardwood was ready to burn. To prevent creosote buildup, my wood stove manufacturer strongly recommended burning hardwood with a moisture content of 20% or less. As a result, I decided to purchase a wood moisture meter from Amazon. It works exceptionally well and eliminates the guesswork, making it easy to know when the wood is safe to burn.
A wood moisture meter is actually a really useful thing we should have. Not only for the firewood, but also for the lumber we have. Thanks for the tip! I had to look up what creosote is. It's probably best to have as little as possible of that building up in your chimney...
@@northernhomestead2024 You may want to run a chimney brush down your chimney yearly. I run a chimney brush down my chimney yearly just for safety. The last thing any of us want is a chimney fire.
We actually got the professional chimney sweep to come and do it this year, so that he could let us know if there was anything wrong. So much soot came out of that chimney! According to his opinion it had never been cleaned before and he could tell us some more useful things we needed to know about it, so we can do some necessary repairs this coming summer (add that to the list of projects). I did "inherit" a chimney brush from my dad, so with 2 fires on the go all winter, I might give it two sweeps (is that the correct use of the word?) each year.
Merry Christmas, I hope all your projects go well! 🌹
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you too!
I'm afraid those guys in the sheep barn are eating the insulation! 😁
They're loving it! What's better than edible walls?
Caroline, you have such a sweet smile. It was great to "meet" you 😊
Thanks, that's kind of you to say so! I'm still getting used to being on the camera 😁, Caroline
Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching!
Please don't paint the brick wall, together with the fireplace in front it looks amazing. The mirror wall was trendy in the late 80s/early 90s. Most people had some variation of it.
I think you're right. Painting it would probably make the wall look more modern and clash with the old fireplace. That's funny to know about the mirror! It would actually be a shame to get rid of it, because our daughters love playing in front of it and seeing themselves. However, they'll probably get bored of it as they get older...
@@northernhomestead2024 I always paint internal brick walls - prefer the nubbly look to bare brick - it always upsets some people. Just different taste that's all !
@@veronicaroach3667 If I would paint it then I think a darker colour would work there, like a dark red. We'd really only be able to decide once I've cleaned the mortar off and see what we're left with...
I've almost caught up with the videos but I just wanted to say that I've really enjoyed spending my evening watching you go from finance to farmers. You certainly look like you are enjoying it and you are not shy of tackling anything. Seeing you run the mill has made my day, not to mention working the dough lol, the one thing I haven't taken to in the kitchen yet..😂❤
That's really cool to hear that you've enjoyed bingewatching our videos! In this first year here everytime I was struggling with something (which has been a lot!) I would think back to sitting in an office which then gave me the energy to keep going. Some things take me 20 times to get right and some things will take me a lifetime, but one thing's for sure, I'll never give up! This lifestyle is too good for that. Making pizzas is a good example actually. I've made that recipe so many times and the first 20 times it just wasn't good. But now I do it like a robot and it's great everytime and I don't sit here sulking about how I miss pizza (one of my greatest fears 😂)
I watched this video with opened mouth just like a kid. It was touching, as you were honest ( at least I hope so). I loved your sense of ( black 😮) humour. Hope you are not fed up with this comment. Thanks so much, you are both so brave 😊
We love your comments! Please don't stop ☺ Really glad you enjoyed the video. I was definitely being honest. I would love to tell our whole story, but I was afraid of it being a boring video, especially because we are new to RUclips and we don't know yet what people like to watch. I'll certainly do another video like it somewhere down the line. Thanks for your support and lovely messages, we really appreciate it 🥰
It's really good to see the lambs trying to stand. I'll be hoping to get to see them both in the next video. 👍❤
Yeah, it's taking up a lot of our time and effort to care for them, so we're very happy to see their situation improve and it hopefully not all be for nothing.
One of the best solutions for the septic system is to have the water from everything else bypass the tank and only the toilet uses it. The others tend to fill it with soaps and oils from the kitchen.👍
Yeah, Caroline did think that all the grease etc. was not helping the problem. I had thought of doing this when building a future extension in which we'll have the new kitchen, but that could be far away into the future and I think I need to do something sooner rather than later. Either way, it'll have to wait till summer, as the ground is now frozen and harder than concrete. Plenty of time to plan for this solution. Thanks for the great advice!!
I've just found your content and I look forward to catching up on what I've missed. I hope you have some joy with getting the septic going before Christmas dinner. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your beautiful family, nice and warm, filled with love and laughter. Best wishes from Cape Town.❤🎄
Awesome! Very cool to have someone from South Africa watching our channel. Hope you enjoy the other videos. Mind you, there's a noticeable difference between the older videos and the later ones (in my honest opinion 😅) Best wishes to you as well and hope you have great Christmas and an even better start to the New Year!
What a problem to wake up to. Having lived on a holding since 1987 and only having a septic tank system I think that the biggest problem is too much paper and any type of chemicals. It doesn't handle those two things well. Here in South Africa you can also buy enzymes that you start in warm water, then flush and it gives it a bit of a jump start.😂
It was a tough one. I skipped lunch that day. Couldn't stomach it 😅I've now put chicken wire in front of the septic line, so hopefully that catches the paper at least. There's more I can do, but right now I don't want to go back in there! Thanks for the tip about the enzymes. I'll have a look into that!
you sound dutch *)
You would be correct 😁
Love the place! So awesome, and for that money?! Omg ... What a bargain
Thank you! Yeah, bargain is the right word for that!
Lovely home. I’ve never heard of a root cellar. I love the wood and brick down there very cool space. What is the temperature outside and in your living space and what is the temperature in the root cellar do you think?
Thank you! In the winter months (from around October to beginning of May) it stays between 0 and 4 degrees celsius and humidity is around 90%, which are both perfect conditions for a root cellar, so we're really lucky with that. Outside temperatures vary quite drastically in the winters. One day it can be around -5 degrees celsius and the next it can be -25. Usually when temperatures drop down below -20, the root cellar seems to drop below 0 degrees, which is a bit too cold, but all our vegetables are in sand and so it doesn't really get affected, unless the cold persists for weeks on end. But then we can just open the door to the root cellar which increases the temperature back to over 0 a little. In our living space we have the temperature usually above 20 degrees when we have the fireplace nice and hot. But the mornings before we've got the fire going it can be about 12 degrees on the really cold nights!
@@northernhomestead2024 tell the truth, how hard is it to peel yourself out from underneath those warm layers in your bed to go start that fire when it’s that cold in the house? I’m sure it’s very hard! Love your story thank you for sharing.
@@stonecrestquilt I normally hope that Caroline gets up before me and gets the fire going 😂 If we're lucky we'll have put on some big logs on the fire later on in the evening, which would leave us some hot coals in morning and all we have to do is chuck on some wood and let the draft start the fire. Thank you for watching!
Built in closets is mostly in older houses built before the 60-70's and basements is mostly in houses built before the 80's. I grew up in the Swedish country side and in the winter my mother always cooked on the wood stove in the kitchen as we had the fire burning in it anyway from morning to evening.
Thanks for that interesting piece of information. So basically houses got worse after the 80's! Those sound like wonderful memories. We hope to create those here as well!
Thank you, the story is very touching. The chickens look as if they were more active ( neurotic 😂) than warm climate colleagues. And certainly they are beautiful 🐤🐤🐤
Mmh, that's interesting. I've never had chickens in my life, so I can't compare, but they are certainly energetic and rather good flyers!
I did not realize you were that north 😮 Certainly it must be incredibly hard to manage such weather. Wishing you blessed Christmas 🌲 Thank you ❤
Yes, we really did go far north! The colder climate certainly comes with a lot of challenges, some that we were ready for and a lot that we're learning about as we go. But that's part of the experience that we dreamed of and it sure makes for an exciting experience! We wish you a merry Christmas as well from our cold snowy homestead!
Thanks, will be following your family jorney. Please give my best regards to your wife. Wishing little girls flourish while mum and dad are making their dream life true 🙂😇
@@renata-s5b That's so nice to hear. She sends her regards back! ☺
Keep the brick!!
1-0 for the brick! We do think it looks cozy and all it needs is a clean and some fixing. Cheapest option by far
Excellently done. If you lose electric will your water freeze? How often do you have a power failure? Hey, I really admire your cooper wood ash pan. !! EDIT: Nice work using what you had to put that window in. It's always good to reuse.
Thank you! The water pipes are all deep in the ground below the frost level. About 1.5 metres down, so those should never freeze. The cellar shouldn't get too cold either for that, but we can help and keep it more insulated by shoving snow against the house, which we'll do now that we have plenty of snow to go around! Last year we had a week around -40 degrees Fahrenheit (which is also -40 degrees Celsius) and we had no problems whatsoever with the water freezing. Quite amazing. Power failures come about 3 to 4 times a year so far where we are. Luckily enough they never lasted too long. Not more than half a day. And then there's different types of maintenance, which means it goes down for several hours as well, happens also a few times of times a year. They have been a good motivation and reminder each time to go off-grid. It feels really good to reuse stuff indeed. It's great to have had so much left behind by previous owners!!
Loving the wood stoves. Positively surprised they have been largely sufficient to heat up the entire house given that (1) it’s (almost) winter and (2) you are located all the way up in Sapmi.. Thanks also for showing the interior of the house. I have been considering purchasing a house / cabin in Sapmi as well, and this type of tour is very valuable to show is what can reasonably expected in such a house. 🙇♂👍
It’s been around -15 to -20 the last few days and it’s been heating the house no problem. Quite amazing. I really didn’t expect that when we bought it, because it was the cheapest we could find that came with an oven. In the morning we also light the old woodstove to kickstart the day and get the chill out of the house, but then it quickly gets too hot, so we just have the kitchen woodstove run for the rest of the day by itself which keeps a real nice ambient temperature throughout the house. Really glad you enjoyed the tour and that I could provide you with some valuable information. I hope you also find what you’re looking for. Happy house hunting!!
