+Matthew Herzog I like to golf mainly to relax and get out doors and hang out with my friends. But yeah there are plenty of people who use it as a status symbol. lol Some people use there disposable income in different ways.

  • @LeoSkyro

Yes, to play golf amateurly you dont need an athlete body, if we talk pro right now theres so much competition that you have to anyway. But what it lacks in physical preparation it has times and times more in mental development. I played golf for ten years from my childhood into my teens and I can say it changed me, it showed me how life works, how to succeed in it. Something I dont see in my friends that played soccer, basket, rugby...my mind is seriously so much older than all my same-aged friends. I dont know how to explain, sorry english is not my first language.
Bill was funny as always but not that much because he just ranted on something he doesnt know and like, hes truly funny when he talks about stuff he knows, like women. Probably he'll never truly discover golf

I agree with what you said. I kept waiting for you to mention the mental aspects of football, with it's strategies as well as the mental fortitude to handle the giant monsters trying to crush you. It's like chess if you were to occasionally get sucker-punched while you're thinking or moving a piece. Martial Arts is definitely mental/psychological with the research you need to do to find out what moves are available, you gotta read the Tao Te Ching, The Art of War, The Teachings of Buddha and Sun Tzu's Art of War. Unless you're in MMA, then you just gotta take a weekend of kickboxing, learn to use your knees and elbow (the n tell people you learned Muy Thai) and learn to wrestle (which is the bulk of the action) and you're done. The only mental/psychological aspects of golf is plotting your course (which will typically be obvious) and not psych yourself into knocking it into a hazard. Love your stuff Bill; plus, now that I live in the Midwest, it's nice to hear an east coast accent from time to time.

Some really nice old guys like golf, my uncle loves meeting up with his friends and spending the day, sometimes the whole weekend down at the most beautiful course, gorgeous clubhouse, it’s a great way to live. Personally I don’t play it because for one I’m on the dole, so I’m nowhere near a Mercedes, and a lot of snobby fucks like golfing and so there’s that. But Adam Sandler likes golfing, Bill Murray, Alice Cooper, Christopher Lee liked golf. It’s a strange thing, some places are riddled with snobs, others are just rich but good guys enjoying themselves. I think it’s probably the most enjoyable game in the world, out in the fresh air, great clubhouse, delicious food, trees and plants and ponds everywhere, good atmosphere to the place. it’s a game, not a sport.

As one of what we called The Dogs of Golf, I feel obligated to put in my 2 cent's worth. First, one must use one of the golf bag compartments to hold Golf Fluid, consisting of a pint of one's favorite whiskey. Next, one must drive the golf cart as it's meant to be driven, leaping over rises, etc. One must also avoid losing the grip on the club, to avoid ending up with the club hung up in a tree. The score? Who cares? Most importantly, one must hone the skills for finding lost balls, to replace all of the ones you've bought used, and lost in the woods. All in all, knowing one sucks at golf, just have fun, aim at the gophers, not the hole, at least in the first five whacks. This concludes the ways of the Dogs of Golf.

Much as I love Bill, this applies to the sports he loves as well. Football? That shit is the most fucking boring, mind numbing garbage where 99 percent of the positions require zero talent or athletic ability. The quarter back needs to have a decent amount of arm strength, and that's pretty much it. The only ones who need a good amount of athleticism are the receivers and MAYBE the running backs. That's fucking it. Everyone else all you need to do is be big and lift weights. You can be fucking fat and be a great football player. How many fat Olympic wrestlers or MMA fighters do you see?

Bill I love you mang! I have played Basketball, Football and Baseball. Walked on to my D1 team in college. While I agree you don't need to be an athlete to play golf it is to me the most humbling sport I have ever played. I tore my ACL MCL and Meniscus playing ball in college. That injury ended my career in contact sports. I picked up golf at 29 to scratch that itch of competition.
I can say honestly and humbly that golf is without the most difficult thing revolving sports I have ever done. The fact that the ball is still is why it is so incredibly difficult. Come play with me and I can show you what an athletic individual can do with those sticks!

Doing things that require coordination [hit a golf ball] and the ability to repeat a motion is athleticism. Regardless of the fact that it does not require good cardio or low body fat. See: "Baseball players."

rollotwomassey So by that measure, pool or billiards is a sport. Feh.

Matthew Herzog Take 10 guys who've never played either golf or pool. Have them try and hit a pool ball with a cue ball. Then ask them try and hit a golf ball with a golf club. The results will be instructive.

Imo stuff like ping pong, darts, bowling, pool and golf (not what the the average joe might think of as 'athletic endeavours') are sports whereas stuff like bodybuilding, gymnastics, ice-skating and ballet aren't. I think of the latter category as art. The former is judged objectively (i.e. get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible) whereas the latter is judged subjectively and is purely opinion based.

rollotwomassey So you're saying golf is harder? I'd guess you're right. I mainly don't like golf because it's a sport favored by corporate suits and working class people who have come into a little money and want to make sure everyone knows it. It's a status thing for most people.

I'm neither and I like golf :-) Not that I'm good at it...

I don't hate golf as much as I hate the people who play it.

It's certainly more psychologically demanding and mentally engaging to fight in a cage or a ring.
