The original was supposed to be sad so it seems to be more of personal taste whether it's supposed to be upbeat or not. I wouldn't say it's better because it shifts the emotion of the song; it's just more suitable for upbeat situations, like at a club, as opposed to the original which is more suitable for something like, say, crying in the corner.
