- After nearly 2000 years since Hindus first arrived, Bali is now the last Hindu stronghold of Indonesia. Hindu temples and Hindu practice are different in Bali and India. This video looks at how the Balinese temples are organised and also the main theological difference of Indonesia Hinduism.
The second half of the video is concerned with the Sendratari Ramayana and shows it performed with Kechak at sunset at the Uluwatu temple in Southern Bali. The ballet depicts the ancient Indian epic of Lord Rama who, with heroic Hanuman the monkey, wages war on the Rakshasas of Lanka in order to rescue Sita. It is a very Indo-European myth, and I loved seeing it depicted in dance!

I've been to Bali twice, Balinese Hinduism is very interesting. They are usually happy for you to attend their ceremonies if you ask and wear the right clothing. I recommend a book called Bali - Sekala and Niskala, for reading on the subject

This is the thing about my religion is that we don't suppress culture. We let people do their own thing. Tribal communities of North East India identify as hindu though they have their own tribal rituals way way different from Hindus of rest of India. In Bali they have a different ramayan but nobody ever criticized the difference between indian and Indonesian ramayan. Very proud of my culture.

It's performed every year in India on the occasion of Navratri (going on right now) culminating into day of Dusshera when Ram kills Ravana, it's called as Ram leela (Ram's play)
Most of the heroic myths of europe are made up.

Wow. Thanks for making this great video. As an Indian I am so happy to see the hindu culture so well preserved in Bali. One small correction is that the Eagle that helps Sita is Jatayu, Not Garuda. Garuda is actually considered undefeatable and Ravana would have been no match for Garuda.
Plus the fact that Jatayu was a vulture and not an eagle
BTW Hanuman might not be a monkey, Hanuman and his people were called as Vānar which means men of the forest because they lived in the forests, he was a learned person with knowledge of Yogic powers and other Sanskritic knowledge, he might have been a Neantherthal as he looked different than us

Really fascinating seeing the mix of Indo-European and Austronesian religious traditions in Balinese Hinduism. The offering of lime and betel nut is incredibly widespread across many different Austronesian traditions. A group of anthropologists also did research in the Balinese highlands and Balinese ancestor worship has clear parallels with Polynesian beliefs, syncretised with Vedic Hindu ideas of the Pitṛs.
Shame. It's Austro-asiatic origin. The original inhabitants that took on these ideals were the ancestors of the Malay, Javanese, Cham, Khmer, Mon, Balinese, Sundanese and the list goes on.
The original inhabitants of Sundaland were Negritos and Austroasiatics. And genetics prove that.
These different "Austronesian traditions" are no more than adopted when they encountered the austorasiatics practicing the culture already.

Polythiesm is the correct religion, monotheism is a counter-religious heresy and an act of blasphemy against by extension of logic. The world has been plunged into a fire of destruction as a consequence of this blasphemy. The course of history bears this out.

Yes I realise that from one perspective all Hinduism is monotheist in the sense that all deities are manifestations of the One, but this view actually exists in nearly all pagan religions too, which means there is no such things as polytheism at all, however i feel this is a semantic and not a theological problem, since the distinction of polytheism from monotheism was not concerned with this level of theology and in fact the earliest uses of "polytheism" are to describe Greek beliefs that were no more polytheistic than Hinduism. In this case we should say Monotheism is not merely a religion which recognises the One and the oneness of divinity, but rather, one which obsessively bans the diverse manifestations and representations of the One which are proper to it.
That is a reaction to the encroachment of some counter religion which , in order to be differentiated, denies all deities . For example, sikh religion had to frame itself as a monotheism since it was polythiestic hindus facing the onslaught of islam , also the egyptians had to rebrand themselves as some kind of monotheism after Akhenaten's iconoclatic frenzy .
This reaction sustains and propagates down to this day just like any other meme , doesn't mean it has any innate truth to it any more than the thing it was born as a response to. IMO saying there is some form of monotheism underlining all polythiesm is giving into the enemy's frame , as islam claims it is the purest monotheism and the first and oldest religion was a monotheism.

Hinduism is better thought as Pantheism than Monotheism. It might seem a semantic difference but it really is a distinction that stems from a worldview utterly different to that commonly found in actual "monotheistic" religions. Monotheism emphasizes God's singular-ness and His distinction from the world itself. Suffice it to say Hinduism as it is actually practiced is about as far from monotheism as you can get. Having a "highest One-ness" at the top of a divine hierarchy does not preclude its Polytheistic nature.
