I have to comment on something here. Your swages are too tight, especially your 1-1/8" swage which is close to being a press-fit. According to Harris, the recommended clearance for Stay-Silv 15 is .002"-.006". Even at .002" the mating tube should slip in the swaged tube freely, and you should be able to very slightly wiggle it from side to side. With the tight fit you show the braze material won't adequately flow down into the joint.
I saw that you rotate the swaging tool about halfway through the swage, and this is the correct method to avoid a potential split tube. However, when you have swaged the tube out until the dies are against the stops, you need to rotate the tool again to the initial position and run it to the stops one final time. The reason for this is because the space between the six die segments will be flatter than the areas that the die segments contact. Those flat-sided areas in the copper are a few thousandths smaller than the radiused areas, which makes the fit tight. By running the dies out one final time in the original position you will get a fully round swage and the proper fit that the tool is designed to give.
Hope that helps!
I couldn't find the right size tubing for my hvac without buying hard acr tubing. It won't expand without splitting and that will make it practically impossible to do where I need to without internal oxidation.
Great demonstration Craig in the usage of this tool. Great tip about rotating the tubing half-way in the process. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Stuzman!
Love that tool, easy to use and simple to make the correct swedge all the time.
Thanks a lot Ray Ray!
I never thought about using a unibit as a reaming tool and I've never liked the big round style as it is very clunky.
I mostly use a plumber's pipe reaming tool but now I'll have to give it a try.
Thanks Craig!
That unibit was a cheap one but the smaller the steps, the better job the step bit will do, thanks Tomon8tor!
Love My Hilmor Swaging set ! Very fast , no cracking on 5/16 or 3/8 like lever benders . Ya just have to keep fresh Hyd / oil in these tools or it will go crazy when ya really need it .
Good info passed along Craig ... Next generation ...
Thanks Eddy!
i love the hilmor tool. worth every penny
Thanks Oscarbm1234!
100% Agreed! I do refrigeration, so I got the 5/16" and 1/4" dies as well. Still need to get the 1-3/8" and 1-5/8" dies to complete my kit, but in the 4 years I've had the Hilmor I haven't needed either of those sizes. I'm sure I will at one point though.
Wow, i never thought about using a multi or uni bit to reaming the pipe. Brillant :)
Absolutely, save some time. When I do plumbing, I cut the wire brush and put the rod into the second drill too, thanks
I can now complete my spaceship. Thanks
Thanks! Cool tool!)))
Thanks Tapch!
Thanks for the video Craig. I would like to ask you a general question. When you have to braze 2 pipes vertically, do you swage the one looking up or down?
Nice tool it make job easy
Hi. I was wondering if this tool would be good enough to swedge about 20 to maybe 200 wedges or run. I make copper kits for refrigeration systems and seeding by hand gets old. Please let me know
I have a different brand hydraulic swagger, goes up to 1-5/8”, and it is very valuable when you need it. Nothing like using that instead of a coupler and having one more joint to braze.
Oh yeah, for sure, thanks TCPHVAC/R!
how do you expand a piece of metal tube where the depth in about depth of a washer 1/16th with out the tool your using slips off the very shallow rim edge? thats the issue i find my self in
Nice tools
thanks, partner for sharing!!!!!
Thanks jimbola77!
Please have video about ductwork installation
I want this!
I wonder if these heads would fir the Milwaukee pex expansion tool?
Thata nice.. however I like the yellow jacket one. Yes this is more compact but the down falls is the hydraulic fluid. The yellow jacket is is pure muscle with one squeeze. Not much to make the swedge. So ultimately less parts to break or in cold climates seals to go bad.
Thanks I did another video on the manual swager too and I explain how i use that thanks
do you sweat the swaged connection afterwards?
Can we use this as a gun barrel plz reply bro
Good Video. I was wondering when or where you might use a 1 1/8" swage? A 5 Ton system?
Yes 5 ton systems and larger commercial systems
Nice video thank you. Question does the dies from the manual tool fit the hydraulic tool?
Hey Ron, You would have to use the same manufacturers dies and for instance, these dies won't fit onto my other manufacturers manual swaging tool because the manual dies are threaded. This is not, thanks
Question. Is it bad to install 90deg bent on refrigerant lines to make it look pretty clean installation? I wonder if this causes any restrictions or loose pressure?
My line size is
3/8 and 7/8 copper
You can use long turn 90, not short turn like what is used in water piping. However, the less the better. Sometimes we need to and we swage and bend line set to reduce the amount of field brazed joints, thanks!
Has tried doing this for water lines?
Does it work for PEX A?
Hello, can you swage soft copper?
Where to buy the tools.... There are available in asian market..?
Dewalt should do a Battery operated tool like this!!
I noticed there is not a fitting to do 1/4 pipe, what is the best way to swage 1/4 pipe?
I use this tool for tubing larger than 3/8" even though it has a 3/8" die. 1/4" would be too small to make a die for this tool. You would use the standard flare block and block swage or the block and hammer swage- - amzn.to/2T55jyn - - amzn.to/2T3Cx1b - - amzn.to/2CzWMMU
Or sleeve with 3/8 :)
Most of the leaks I fix are on expanded joints, better job using fittings.
This is a tool is my requirement what is this price where to your home delivery
Where did you pick up that step Rheemer at?
Here is a link to the stick reamer- amzn.to/2Di4WKc
Here is a link to a milwaukee step bit used for reaming- amzn.to/2t8rVTn
My swage tool isn't working like it's not building pressure any advice
Did you check to see if it still has fluid inside? What brand is it?
Is there a similar tool to reduce the diameter of pipe?
Not that I am aware of, thanks!
How about 3/8? I was told that would crack the copper
Price Bai g
Sir, what is the cost ₹ for this?
Price this tools
I’ve been in jobs where guys keep cracking the pipe any idea why it does ?
That is because they are not turning the tool half way through the swage to move the seam between the expander portions or the copper is not factory annealed enough. Also I don't use the tool on 3/8" tubing but just the bigger tubes because it could crack the 3/8" if the copper is not annealed enough. For 3/8", I just use a hammer swage with flare block usually, thanks
They aren't reading the instructions. Don't got all the way, don't keep it in the same rotation the whole way. These tools will ALWAYS push the size farther than they need. Attention needs to be paid to when to stop. Never go all the way.
Sir how much cost???
What is the price for that tool
Hey Markooooni, I have the tool linked in the comment and description section, thanks
Every try it to expand pex pipe?
I usually just use the crimp on fittings, thanks
👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks Argenis!
I thought this method was stop along time ago.
Price the tool
I have that linked at www.acservicetech.com/tools thanks!
Have you tried the Swaging drill bit tool set? Whats a better investment?
Yes I have and I will likely do video at some point. I do not like them compared to hammer swages, or manual or hydraulic expanders. It creates a fine dust as it scrapes the inside and you have to have the speed and force pushing in on the pipe at a certain rate or it does not seem to work well. You are also relying on a drill battery and the space to have a drill in the location. Some people love them but I don't really, thanks!
Helo sir want this video used Singh tools please contact me
Oh yes that is so much faster than my manual expander that needs a whole press of the handle to work, NOT!
I want to do a video on the manual swager and hammer swages too. I do like the manual swaging tool for 5/8 through 7/8 and I just use the hammer swages or swaging block/handle for 3/8". I use the hydraulic for tight spaces,1 1/8", and sometimes for other tube sizes, thanks

Why do you call it a swedge and not a swage... Oh you're Canadian, right?
Too tight and capillary action wont take place.
How much for that tool
Too much
