  • Team GB's Max Whitlock retained his Olympic title on the pommel horse Sunday (1 August), besting rival LEE Chih-kai of Chinese Taipei, 15.583 to 15.400. Japan's KAYA Kazuma was the bronze medallist, scoring 14.900. Whitlock is the first man in 41 years to repeat as Olympic champion on the event, after Zoltan Magyar won in 1976 and 1980.
Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan, the 2019 world bronze medallist, was seeking a historic medal in the final but slipped off the horse early in his routine. He finished seventh.
For Whitlock, the win completes a five-year period of domination on the event. Since Rio, he has picked up two world titles (2017, 2019) and a silver medal in 2018. He was European champion in 2019. _____________________________________________________

The fact I was bricking it for Max the whole way was quite the thing! I was like "Rhys is so good, oh gosh he could beat Max" I admittedly was heartbroken for Rhys but I thought "that's such a shame, I don't think he'll get enough of a score to beat Max" I kept going completely slightly hyperventilating every time a new opponent came on. The delight I had when it was confirmed I was so happy for Max!!!!

Interesting debate on Max vs Lee Chih Kai - pretty certain spindles (flairs) have been downgraded in their difficulty from when they first appeared on the scene. Last Sunday at the 2024 Baku World Cup Stephen Nedoroscik matched Lee in both D and E but their styles looked very different. They both hit their respective sets for 15.4 and both awarded gold medals.

@@francischo8891 he would have got the deduction for that anyway. The difficulty is why max won here. In qualification and team finals max got 14.9 and that was without full difficulty. In terms of keeping his legs together max did well in this. The 2nd place guy did very well but his difficulty wasn’t as high as flairs are impressive but it doesn’t necessarily mean you will get a higher difficulty. If max and the 2nd place gymnast got the same score then max would be in second because the tie break goes by who has the highest execution
