  • In this video install a new Whale gusher 30 manual bilge pump into my sailboat. My old manual bilge pump is old, unserviceable and whoever installed it last, installed it backwards! i also test all three of my sailboat bilge pumps and see how fast my Whale gusher 30 is at emptying the bilge and how sustainable it is if you needed to use the manual bilge pump long term
    Enjoy!!

Cheers Tom. Hows your boat life coming along? did you do your electric motor?

Best practice is to attach the handle with a lanyard / line leading back to the pump. Murphy's law says if you need to use the pump in a hurry the handle will have fallen out of the holder and be inaccessible in the bottom of the lazarette.

I am surprised the gusher 25 was not serviceable. Did they stop making parts for them? The gusher 30 is a beast of a pump.

I tried sanding the corroded aluminium flat where the valves rest so they could make the proper seal, but the aluminium was too far gone

I am curious how you guys learn all the things you do on the boat. When my financials are calculated i kind of wanna start a similar project but i am scared of starting because i dont have any crafting skills.

So this is something i really try to reflect accurately in my videos but i obviously need to do better. I think of diy projects in two categories. 1, that takes a large amount of repetition to get an acceptable finish (ie welding or applying large stickers/vinyl) and 2, that just takes the knowledge, Patience and perseverance (ie plumbing a boat or reinstalling manual bilge pump). If in category 2 i will almost always do it myself. Before almost all my projects i really don't feel like i know what im doing. The key is to do all your research, learn what you can, ask experts what you don't know (usually if you ask someone for some knowledge they are more than happy to dispense), And then start (procrastinating starting via too much research is also a thing of mine). Try not to focus on the whole job because that becomes overwhelming. instead focus on the next thing you have to do and figure out how to do that one thing then move on to the next.
If you ever do get truely stuck, get a professional in to do that one little bit and get them to teach you as much you can get out of them whilst they are there (in my motorhome build, i got an electrician to help me put together the business end of the electronics whereas now i feel like i basically have a Trade certificate qualification in electrical engineering).
Before you know it, that task will be complete, You'll have learned a little, or a lot, you'll have a sense of accomplishment and repeat with the next task. Over time you'll tackle harder and harder projects and soon you realise that almost everything is put together by people like you or me, there is no reason why you can't do it and you truely feel you can do anything.
i hope that helps. Let me know when you get your boat!! 👍😀
