- This video shows how paint can be DESTROYED by an amateur with a rotary buffer. Well, almost destroyed. In this video, I show you step by step how to remove the buffer trails -- or holograms -- on black paint.

Interesting, that you get Koch Chemie in the US. Very good products for professionals here in Germany. Nice job! Didn't think the Dodge RAM would have enough clearcoat to be rescued. Generally american and japanese cars use very little paint which makes reviving destroyed paints sometimes near impossible.
Can tell someone likes cleaning cars when after you polish you walk around it like a guerilla looking it up and down checking for any missed spots, great video 👍🏻

Not to bust your chops , great video by the way. usually when you add water to the surface while polish is still on the pad and the surface. The water increases the cut, learned that from a Rupes advanced paint correction course.

Im in L.A. ppl that deatail dont like trying new products like Koch chemi specially bcus its expensive, BUT I absolutely L♡VE using it . I didn't get all dusty easy to use and results are on point. It's worth buying

So basically what it comes down to is extremely low arm speed on speed 5, yeah? I think if you do THAT--the defects will disappear ... not sure if I answered your question lol
I think Chromatic is asking about doing a smaller test spot. Because the test spot is for testing pad/product combo. Hopefully the technique/arm speed is already there ;)
Slow as you go, it must take you all day to do one vehicle.. I’ve been detailing vehicles 30 years.
Hawk - Did you try polishing those buffer trails before going in with cutting with a microfiber pad? I only ask because who ever cut the truck 1st with a rotary could have removed a significant amount clearcoat. Would have been interested to see what removal you could have achieved with a good polish ( w/pad choice ). Did you measure everything out before cutting? Nothing wrong with low and slow brother! Great video!
You got a point , i would also try first polish with different then cutting pad , Also as you mention some1 could remove significant amount of clear , in my own opinion he’s also may be taking much off clear coat as he spends quite time on 1 spot and doing too many trails ?

nice work iam curious how much something like that cost on truck that size.
A body shop put holograms all up in my paint, then comp'd me a ceramic coating, which was a nice gesture, but they "sealed" in the damage...how can I correct through the ceramic? Do I have to do a three stage (first stage remove ceramic, second stage compound, third stage polish)? Also, what was the light you used in the beginning to see the holograms? I can only see them in the sun, I can't see them with my film set lights I use to see swirl marks.

Why didn’t use the onr/polish/protect system ? Would hyper seal work for this type of work
I am having this exact problem. I just bought a new to me 2017 Silverado black, without seeing it in sunlight. It was raining the day I bought it. Now that I’ve seen it in sunlight, it’s full of these buffer trails. How much should I expect to spend to have this corrected?
Is it black? Not sure but probably 800-1,000 to do it right...they might even throw in in ceramic which might put you closer to 1,500. If you're not super picky and just want those gone someone might do it for 400 but you get what you pay for
Optimum Hyper Polish is the best finishing polish I’ve ever used on black paint(especially soft). Oberk Polish is very good too. Optimum Hyper Compound is horrible. Truck looks GREAT!!!
My man! Hyper compound hazes like crazy but it levels paint fast. Any tips or tricks for hyper polish? I really like it but cant get a perfect finish on black paint....
Hawk Pro Detailing I use hyper polish at speed 3-4(really slow arm speed is not beneficial to finish) and light pressure. This all could vary depending on paint hardness, but for the most part, this works for me.

Yes it does. Many veterans of the industry preach this, while young guns try to get the showroom shine by spending way too many hours behind the polisher....not being profitable ....and removing too much clear 😂 I'm learning more every day but sometimes a customer wants that shine

When onr is on the surface I see the dirt in the bubbles but they won’t fall down. Can I use opti seal to buff them out or still use onr to push them down ?

Great vid man. I just started a detailing business out in SC and was wondering the benefits of having a garage like that vs being mobile. I like the idea of having a garage but don’t want to break the bank. Is rent cheap for a space that size?
Start mobile first.See if you enjoy it and build your clientele. Then decide if you want a shop. A shop is more professional. Sets you apart from the mobile guys which are a dime a dozen. It helps with branding and people enjoy a place they can go to and drop off. You can eventually hire employees that will do the work for you while you collect the $. That's if they can detail to your standards

Man i am using koch chemie too it is great , but lately ive been polishing a black car and after i put it in the sun , i found out buffing trails , i tried to remove it using micro cut polish and a soft pad , it didn't work as it should , any suggestion ??
Use purple pad and m3. Use the 3 inch pad and work 1 foot by 1 foot sections. Try medium pressure and speed 3. But technique might need adjusting. Wipe off...no need to work the polish until it gets clear you are polishing for results not for standard operating procedure. Then use ipa or panel prep and inspect carefully. Adjust technique as necessary
At that pace it would take a month to do the whole truck!

So how would holograms happen? And they are different from the haze left behind after compound
Holograms happen with a rotary buffer, so holograms have everything to do with that one direction (circular) movement of the rotary. Whereas "haze left behind after compound" is likely what we call "DA haze." da, or dual action polishers, do leave behind a kind of haze when you use a microfiber pad and compound. It, too, needs to be refined but has a different look than what you would call "holograms."

I am almost sold to forced rotation as it will not keep stopping at curves and edges of some crazy toyota cars :)
The only point holding me back from going forced rotation is absence of knowledge if forced rotation machine will always finnish very well with one step compound leaving no holograms as well on black paints. At Least on German cars.
Scholl s20 one step compound and medium cutting pad / blue spider pad combo for example to remove moderate to heavy swirls to 85-95% perfection = 85-95 % defects correced while super lttle haze and 0 holograms left after 2 passes= left to right and up snd down = 1 cross

I am shocked how black paint is so easily mistreated. I love black luxury vehicles but its the most pain in the neck to keep nice. Im taking my brand new Audi A8 to the detail shop for this treatment and ceramic coating asap. I imagine the dealer has a bad detail shop when the car was delivered to them. I didnt notice it until I got it the sun came out two days after. By that time my trade was sold and there is nothing the dealer is willing to do for me, and frankly I dont want their detail shop touching this car again!

If all you wanted to remove was the buffer trails, why not just a 1-pass with the polishing compound?

Rotary swirls or "holograms" are simply a sign that a job is unfinished. In this case there were holograms and other issues like deeper scratcher so I compounded first. But really holograms only need to be refined or polished with a foam pad and polish in most cases. There has just been a gap in time between when the holograms were inflicted and when the car was brought to me

One step takes me 12 + hours in BMW X5 black , meaning one and a half day :(

How do I speed up to 8-10 hours ?
I see some people get it done in 4 hours with da .

Once you get confident...and this is not endorsed by everybody...you can go speed 6 lots of pressure really fast arm movement. You'll need to blow out pad more often and monitor paint for heat. You can also go slow, speed6, pressure, for lots of cut but really be careful on heat. Don't blame me if you burn paint and be cautious with this...hundreds of hours on paint can't happen unless you get experience so be kind to yourself and keep learning. You will figure out hacks but it just takes the reps

At the moment it seems like there is nothing to improve
I am cutting with da on max speed 7500 orbits but it does slow down a lot when you press hard on it , with dead slow passes and lots of pressure with Scholl S20 one step and blue spider pads from Scholl
It takes 2 criss cross passes to get 70%
Takes 7 passes to get 95% perfect on Mercedes a d BMW
Many passes and dead slow speed ..... What's there to improve :(
Even with just 2 criss cross passes it takes 1.5 day :(

Doing it outside in full sun though with waterless prewash LOL
I always get German black cars for waxing and now for polishing f... CK me ! :(

Shops here charge 100$ for a 2 step Correction plus interior detail. And customers def realize the quality they get. Buy nice or buy twice! Reason why I charge 250$ inside and out plus 2 step Correction not 100$
Yeah I'm just trying to stay in my own lane as far as what others charge but I definitely dont want to be known as the cheap guy. That gets you busy and also can burn you out IMHO

Wait.. what? You're saying a 2 step correction on an *entire* vehicle is only $100 all in?!? That can't be right.. 😲😲
That is *easily* an all day job, or multiple days, to do it correctly. After you factor in materials and operating costs, you're looking at what $50 for the day??! I don't know *why* or *how* anyone could be a professional detailer and earn a comfortable living at anything remotely close to those rates.
To wash, decon, and two step a vehicle I charge around $1000, and that doesn't include protection.. Around $2000 for a complete inside and out detail, correction and coatings on multiple surfaces.. and I absolutely feel like I earn every dollar. So do my clients, I dont even market or advertise, I'm 100% referral based and I have all the work I can handle..
Rates that low almost offends me on a personal level.. I question the quality of work being done. Either way it sets a bad precedent for professionals. High end detailing is not easy, it takes time, hard work, and talent.. that's why it's expensive.. you have to know your value..

@@jdisdetermined My exact reaction unless we are talking about Mexico city or something. At best in the States you'd get a quick buzz with a cleaner wax that has good filling. Even that would be a lot for $100. Shoot, a decent tunnel car wash charges $20!
