- Hey!
In this video I, a beginner, go my very first round of disc golf with Tomas Ekström. He shows me what to think about with disc and shot selections. Hope you´ll enjoy the video :)

how about the worst thing (in my opinion) to tell a new player..."just go straight" ...lol 3 years and i still can't get the darn thing to just go straight.

@@Latitude64 seen that y'all make some really good videos
I'm becoming a big fan of Jonathan. I can totally relate with a lot of the experiences he has. He has a great attitude, and I think he explains what he's trying to do very well. Especially the "ramble" where he talked about having too much force and not enough control. That will balance out the more he plays. It's one thing to do field work, but ultimately one must play the game. BTW very nice camera work (you can tell a good camera was used) and post production (from the edits to the graphics). Lastly, as an American, I appreciate the "feet" being used as well as meters. Keep this beginner video series going, even if it's just Jonathan vlogging his development!
Thank you, Nick. Very nice of you! /Jonathan
when this covid is done we need bobby/robert vs Tomas/Jonathan
@@Latitude64 Jonathan my buddy that just started watches your videos and loves them! keep playing!
This is the most relatable introduction to disc golf I’ve seen. 😂 The guy that’s been playing for a while and the buddy that’s trying out the sport.
I'm glad :) /Jonathan
I just started disc golf my self - this video is gold!
It is right up my alley and I can totally relate with Jonathan. I love your attitude towards getting into it as a beginner, and you are just an awesome voice of us beginners among great teachers! Thank you so much for that - also great camera and post production work, love it!
First time 5 years ago. Addicted ever since. I'm 50. Only sport I ever fell in love with. Wish I would have found it before I was getting old. Like the videos.
I’m in the same situation but I’m 60. Only been playing for 6 months though.
Got my brother hooked too. He'll be 60 this year.
I'm just about to turn 50 and I've just started practicing throwing. Haven't even been on a course yet. ;) I've wanted to play the sport since I first saw those strange baskets at a local park 30 years ago.
What's old? I just started at 65. These guys are funnier than the Smothers Brothers. Oh wait, no one here even knows who they are.
@@MattBogusz Of course I know who the Smothers Brothers are. Tom & Dick. I'm 50, not 20. lol Vive la Yo Yo Man! ;)
I had never heard about Disc Golf before my brother in law invited the entire family out for a round.
We assumed that we would not be good, and would have no clue what we were doing, but we had a great time and got hooked fairly quickly.
Where I live there are not many options for courses within 1 hour drive, and no farmer will be happy with Discs hitting their cows or sheep, so there really are no fields to practice at either.
That first round, we lost count of how many we let play through, but that's to be expected when one is new.
I still let people play through quite frequently, as I am still just a complete newbie and have had very few people to ask for advice. Best advice I ever got so far was "Start to learn to throw a midrange and a putter. Wait with drivers" (Guess I should not have bought the drivers when I did, they see more use now though.)
Hole 8:

Tomas: Please don't hit me...
😂😂 I've been in both positions. This was a great video to see how things are progressing...and what still needs to be worked on. Excellent content. 😊
Nice par Jonathan...that had to feel good...if you weren't hooked yet you should be now!
Thank you :)
Loving this series with a new player!!! Great content all around!
*edit* loving the Scandinavian humor, lol!!!
Haha thank you :) /Jonathan
Agreed! These are SO good!!
Man, I love the humor of these videos :)
😅👍
First experience was a few weeks ago. Watched one RUclips video on driving and shot every shot with a backhand drive, including putts approaches. Was +55 After 18 holes, Birch Point Park in Thunder Bay, Canada. I looked up how to putt afterwards. Really improved my game.
Love the professional commentary on 10:20
"I have no idea what to do here!"

Please more videos like this. It was super informative, but also had me laughing which really made me absorb more info. 😄 great work by the guy teaching and guiding the other guy through the shots. It was an absolute pleasure to watch.
That´s very nice of you. We will be making more of these videos. Is there something specific you´d like to see? /Jonathan
You guys made me feel less alone. You're also very funny. Love the duo's dynamic. Good job!
Thank you, Kevin :)
I played for the first time the other day and really enjoyed it! These are some of the best tutorial vids I’ve ever seen, and hopefully soon I’ll be able to at least keep up with my friends!
Hey, Raymond. Glad you like the videos :). Have a nice day and good luck keeping up with the friends. /Jonathan
Please more of these. I don't know how I got into disc golf, but I know that you guys at Lat 64 are teaching me and inspiring me to go out more! Let me know if there is anything I can do to support these videos.
I love the edited transitions (ex. 10:52), there were a couple in one of the most recent videos too. The editing is great, Tomas and Jonathan are great together. Really opening my eyes to some new molds I haven't tested before. Keep up the great work.
I stopped and rewound that twice cause I agree! Sweet footage AND post!
5 years ago I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't have any putter. My family bought Innova discs. My drive was 15m with a fast katana. Soon I had my first Latitude discs (easy to use) and my drives were succesfully longer. I have to thank videos I found from RUclips and I got my first goldline River andI still have it in my corebag.
My first time playing was after I had watched a couple of short videos some friends had posted on Facebook. I wasn't certain that I wanted to sink any money into the game yet. Being VERY ignorant, I bought a dog frisbee and played several rounds with it. I decided I liked the game well enough and bought a starter set. (Innova as it was the only thing available in my area). Once I had real golf discs, I fell in love with the sport and even managed to get my wife hooked. I'm 53 now and started when I was roughly 49. I wish I had discovered it earlier in my life.
haha I love these! I can relate to Jonathan
Haha the struggle is real :) /Jonathan
My first experience on a disc golf course went something like this.
I grew up playing all kinds of sports, but I never really cared for contact sports. I didn’t feel like I ever truly fit into mainstream sports. I loved throwing a frisbee, and kicking around a hacky sack with friends. I was 16 years old and I heard some guys at my high school talking about playing disc golf. I had no clue what it was, but I saw them in our school newspaper (which I thought was pretty cool) and understood golf and frisbees. The concept seemed very simple, but I didn’t know anything about the discs.
I went to a store that sold boomerangs, kites, discs, and really any object that flew. I bought an Innova DX Cheetah, and went to the closest park to my house that had baskets. This park is where I grew up playing baseball every summer. The park has long open rolling hills with large old trees sprinkled throughout these rolling fields. Even though this newer course was on a mostly open field with large hills and a few trees here and there, the course was long and challenging for a beginner.
I found my way to hole one and threw my first drive. This disc was not like anything I have played catch with. The Cheetah is a fairway driver making the profile slim and the rim sharper then any beach frisbee I have thrown. I released my first drive and was baffled as to why it went high and faded left fast. An old man with a long white beard and shaggy white hair, a little heavy set, wearing a tie dye shirt approached me. He introduced himself as Hippy Santa hahaha. He asked if I had ever played before. I told him no and that I heard about it and figured I would come give it a shot. He invited me to play a round with him, and proceeded to show me all of the proper ways to grip the disc and the different angles you can release them. He showed me the “X step” and his driving technique “the lawnmower pull”.
In just a few holes I instantly gained twice the distance, but my shots were going all over the place, zigzagging back and forth across each hole. The more I practiced the more I understood the flight characteristics of this disc and worked on my release angles. I remember instantly falling in love with the sport and encouraged my friends to join me all of the time. I have now been playing recreational disc golf for 21 years. I’ve enjoyed contributing to the sport by educating individuals, couples, and families on how to play and understanding proper etiquette on the course.
I’ve put on a few pounds since my teenage years and my beard is starting to turn white now, so maybe the torch has been passed on to me haha. I hope whoever reads this has enjoyed my journey from my first round on. Stay safe out there. Throw long, throw pure, and have fun!
Rain, Sleet, Shine, Or Snow...Gotta Throw!
This is great. You've become my favorite disc golf ⛳ channel.
Gotta pause the video and say that the filming/editing is brilliant on the past few videos I've watched. Someone at Latitude 64 follows Mr. Peter McKinnon ;)
Love the effort, no one else is really bringing a higher filmaking/editing aspect to disc golf videos.
Hey recent watcher of a lot of your videos. I play twice weekly (or more if I have time) and actually only started a couple of months ago. I shot +16 that time, I was definitely ripping the disc too much and had issues with form. I started watching your videos to help with some issues, and on Tuesday this week I went out and shot -3 on the same course. Just wanted to say I'm really grateful for your videos and its nice to see you playing on your first course and having similar issues I did/do. Im sure nowadays you're probably doing a lot better, so I cant wait to watch those videos as well!
Hey Jonathan (if you even read comments on videos as old as this),
So, I'm posting a comment only because you encouraged beginners to do so and I actually shot my first round of disc golf yesterday. I bought some discs last week and basically learned how to throw from watching these Latitude 64 videos. I had a blast and am super pleased with how well I threw (mostly bogeys, a couple pars, and even one birdie!), and I owe it all to these videos. Between Jonathan's self-deprecating but passionate approach and the sage-like mastery of Tomas, the videos on this channel are extremely helpful and accessible to anyone looking to get into or just get better at this all-too-fun sport. So anyway, not to ramble, but thanks and keep up the good work!
Hey, Blair. I do yes :). Great job with the birdie! This made me really happy. Thank you!
I love these videos, you guys! I've been playing for a few years but never sought out instruction. I am learning so much! Your chemistry together is very entertaining as well! Thank You!
Great video! Started in April and been hooked since. Professional gridlocker and disc shanker. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Your videos are funny and useful. I'm catching up and trying to watch all of them. Thanks for all the great tips and entertainment.
Not my first experience playing a round but just played in my first tournament in a long time. I ‘‘twas held during the rain (torrential downpour) which I usually avoid as a casual player. It was two rounds of 18 over 2 courses and it was either raining or jungle like humidity when the sun came out. I had grip issues on drives lead to second guessing and bad form and my usual good short game was not answering my calls to bail me out. I think I started rounding more by turning too sideways to my target/line instead of pointing my chest towards it and right hip up. Midway through the second round when I thought I was out of it and just started to throw relaxed shots down the fairway I was all of a sudden shooting Par instead of +1 to +3 per hole. Love your positivity during the entire experience
My husband played when he was younger and now we have started playing as a family. He's pretty good imo but me and the kiddo are really new. We decided to go check out Northwood in Illinois where the World Championships were played since it was only an hour from us. That place is beautiful! Had a whole lot of fun playing pinball but we managed to not loose anything....yet. Getting hooked and these videos are helping me and the kid out a lot.
Glad you and the kid are helped by the videos :) /Jonathan
Tomas did a great job hiring Jonathan! Awesome marketing with these videos. Definitely keeping me laughing with the comments between the two of you , and really enjoying the editing. The first round I ever played I threw nothing but high loft shots that faded hard and went barely 100 feet. LOL

I can't recall my first round from sometime back in the 80's. I'm sure I had fun though as I still play a few times a week. Love the videos! Thanks!

@@Latitude64 backhand has been my biggest struggle up until last week. It's finally getting better. I also need to invest in a basket to practice putting as well. Overall though I have had so much fun playing disc golf and look forward to playing for years to come.

I'm 53 and played for the first time about 5 years ago. Joined a local outdoor club. Second round ever I aced a hole, first time the club had done that in about 5 years. So, of course I was hooked!
Thats great, Don :) /Jonathan
Great and funny duo. These kind of guys sums up the disc-golfers! And yes, to much force and less control is a good point. I also play squash and coach people in squash and it's the same. You can get so much more power and control by just doing less force. Try and relax and make it feel natural.
Good video, all beginners have this struggle. Keep going you will see the improvement.
Its nice to see videos of players at my level for a change!
Glad you like it 😀
Great video. The two of you make it both informative and fun.
First time last weekend - never heard of disc golf and never played before. I’m hooked and I’m watching videos trying to learn. I used to play golf so some of the experience on the course transfers but the ranges are really new and of course the flight. Love the videos and the channel.
That's great. What are some areas that you would want to learn more of? /Jonathan
@@Latitude64 now that you’ve played and you’ve got a lot more experience and knowledge. Let’s see you revisit the discs. You tried 25 of them 7 months ago. Maybe split it up into several videos with Tomas where you go out and see how you’d choose a set at the end. I’m still in the phase of learning to be consistent in the throw and looking at how each disc performs but I know over time that maybe my bag will change a few times. I’m also curious to see how your picks and Tomas’ picks for you compare.
Yeah I'm thinking I'll be going back to this for sure :). Thank you for the input and ideas
Ok first time on a course was Milo McIver, West. A very challenging course, especially for a beginner. Hole one is over 950 feet (Philo's Albatross hole), and not recommended for a beginner, kinda demoralizing, but I was with some great people and it was so fun. I was hooked, and four years later, I'm still working on form and technique. These videos have been very helpful, so than you gentlemen. 👍
Haha wow that´s super far. How did it go on that hole? /Jonathan
Ummm...I finished with a double par. 😁 I just got back from playing that same course today, and worked on some techniques you and Tomas talked about in other videos. I need to work on a few things but I did see immediate results with my putting. Thank you again for your tips! I look forward to future videos. 😊👍
@@jasondavidson1707 That´s awesome!!!
My first experience playing a round was great. I almost aced hole 9a at my local. I'm still chasing my first ace, now a year in.
Bought my first two discs and played my first round on June 1st (had tried a few times before that), and a few days ago I almost won attending my first ever local tournament (I shot -2 under PAR). This sport is amazing! And, I love your videos :) From one Swede to another
Tack för det :). Vad kul med första tävlingen! /Jonathan

Super fun just playing around and setting your first score on each new course. Me and a friends just went to Skellefte and played 3 rounds 54 holes. yellow and red course is super fun and blue more challenging.

Love these vids!, great stuff guys!
I'd love a season of this on netflix or something.
Haha. Thank you. And Netflix, if you´re watching. Can we work something out? 😂. Have a nice day. /Jonathan
My first experience was a ludicrously tame course and I got many many shots over par, but man is it fun! I was also sore for the whole week!😅
Wow, this course looks so gorgeous
They really are nice. So many more holes to try as well :) /Jonathan
I can relate too that power was the only thing in my mind the first time on a course.. my shoulders and elbow did hurt afterwards
Found today that my first round was similar to yours. A lot of trees and trying to find the best angles. After watching the anhyzer video, I will definitely give that a try.
I played at a par 3 (classic with clubs) golf course that also had disc golf baskets as my first time last year. But today I played the first time with more trees and more twists and bends in the course. I got some Lat64 discs for Christmas and it was useful hearing “could use the Fuse” since I got a Fuse and Saint and got to try them today. I hope to learn a bit more, maybe join some locals (Facebook group plays around the area and meets up) and have some fun. Two pars in 18 holes and a few triple bogeys as well!
Just started really playing about four months ago and have become addicted. I’ve seen major improvements but still have soooo far to go 😂 but I’m learning the less serious I take it and less I focus on scores/improvements on previous rounds, and just focus on falter straighter basic type throws, I tend to do better. Typically for me the follow hole goes horribly wrong but everyday I’m learning something new. Playing with better disc golfers has helped me a ton as well! Diggin the videos. Shout out to latitude 64 for my favorite skull print pure putter! Had to get three more after I lost my first one from my starter set 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Yeah I´ve noticed the same thing. When I really try hard the disc goes "Sorry buddy, not today" and goes of on it´s own little adventure. Glad you like the videos. Have a nice day! /Jonathan
Latitude 64 Jonathan you are the man! If you want to hire a caddy/beginner disc golfer to roam around with, my family would understand completely given the new obsession I have with disc golf 😂 keep the videos coming!!
@@CiscoKid-22 Haha that´d be great 😂
“That’d be great” sounds like a position offer and I accept, send me the details at your convenience 😂 😆
Nice video keep it up! My first disc golf experience was a one disc round with some friends and i realized I could throw it farther than all of them which started the addition of trying to throw farther
How´s it going with the throwing far? I need to get into that as well, haha :) /Jonathan
@@Latitude64 after a year im up to almost 400ft on good days with both backhand and forehand! Accuracy is another story haha

Hole 7 transition was mint
Hello Sir Jonathan 👋
First of all, great editing work 👍
A few months ago my dad and half brother took me to a disc golf course, and I was sure that I would win 🙈 I went straight home for studying the meaning of the terms of this game.
Then I went to practice 💪 and my second game with my father and stepbrother I did totally win 😊
(good for me)😂
I have seen all of your videos and have learned much from Thomas and Johannes 😉 thanks a lot 👌
I do from time to time visit Sweden, and I do intend to someday challenge you for a round 👉
Wish you well
I played my first game, and then really learned how to throw a disc several months later. The game is sooo much more fun for me now that a lot of my discs are actually following a flight path that resembles what is marked on the disc.
I can relate to the trying too hard to throw fast. I used to do a fast run up, but switched to just a controlled walk up and was seeing pretty much the same distance with -generally- more accuracy.
Nice to watch a progression video. Kinda looked like Jonathan was improving there at the end. Should be fun to watch more of these in the future.
I understand. Was there something that sort of clicked when you started to learn after a couple of months? The grip or the stand etc.? When the throwing got better I mean.
@@Latitude64 honestly, I think the thing that helped the most, was watching myself play and compairing my throwing motion to the pros and trying to correct little things I saw. For example, I noticed that while I was reaching back, I wasn't really turning my hips and shoulders, so I wasn't getting as much speed as I could be so I worked on correcting that.
Recording and watching in slow motion is also a good way to look at your timing and footwork and see if you need to work on that.
Grip and stance should basically just come with time. Just every time you get ready to throw, check your grip and eventually both the grip and the stance will feel more natural/comfortable.
I've only been playing for about a year and a half, but I have hit 400(121 meters) feet a couple time on flat ground.
@@jprince85 That´s awesome. Yeah I think slomo is a great way of seeing the "flaws". Good job with the 400!! I´ll try some distance shots in the future for sure.
@@Latitude64 thank you. Congrats on your par in your first round. (assuming this is Jonathan 😁)
@@jprince85 Thank you. Maybe it´s not much but it felt really good :) /Jonathan
“I’m playing... like...a game of pinball.” I’m doing over here 🤣🤣🤣
Found disc golf aged 47.
Someone invited me to tag along. Played one round on a newbie 9 course and was in love at #2.
Immediately bought a starter pack and played as much as possible. Played alone or with other noobs, so I never got any corrections or advice. Spent a long time unlearning bad habits as a result.
I still had fun of course, a lot of fun, but if you want to get straight into good habits, ask around AND check out the rest of the videos on this channel.
And please, if you get the chance/ Do yourself the favour and visit Skellefteå and spend some days at the courses. Trust me! You’ll love it.
Sweden's forests are beautiful, tranquil...to walk in, but so maddening to play disc golf in.
😂
My first (two) rounds yesterday. First in the morning was on the "easy" course: scored +10 par 54. I'm clearly a natural with 8 par holes, right? Second round on "harder" course: scored +28 par 54. I got one par. Ate a big serving of humble pie in the afternoon but I didn't lose a disc! So that's something, right? Today my shoulder's is sore. Can't wait to get back, especially after watching a few videos.
First of many my friend! Keep slinging..
Thats badass you have an awesome mentor helping you start. Take advantage! Haha.
Haha I will :)
Enjoying this and the last video with the teaching.
Hey :) . I´m glad you like it!
Course is beautiful!
It really is 😀
I first started playing in 2011 and got my PDGA # the following year. I had a friend who played and he kept bugging me to come out so we went to a course called Grand Woods, which is not a forgiving beginner course. I remember the trepidation of teeing off of hole 1 with people nearby and not much disc instruction. My Beast flew high into the air and hyzered out to the right (I'm left handed). After the round he left his bag in my car and I went to a soccer field and started practicing. I would like to think I have learned a lot in the past 9 years but I am still very much a student of the game.
It seems like we had the same experience. Besides me being a righty and having the disc go left :). Is there a specific area you´re focusing on after 9 years in? /Jonathan
@@Latitude64 These days the mental game is the final frontier for me. I am pretty good at putting in my backyard or during casual rounds, but I struggle in competitive settings. Hoping to crack the code soon but I'm in it for the long haul!

Hey! Great video and content! I just started with the series, and I hope you will have the budget to upgrade the camera, then the videos would be even better I think! Also, are you guys Swedish? Where do you play? I started during corona at Kärsön in Stockholm.

My first time was worse than this effort. Glad you had fun (it's hard to tell with you Finnish guys). Keep at it. Maybe get a basket and practice some putting at home every night? Knowing how to confidently sink every putt within circle one would have improved that round probably by 7-8 shots.
Okey. Has your experience gotten betten since? :). I´ve been thinking about that excact thing. Hopefully in a not so distant future :) /Jonathan
lol when tomas missed the birdie on his nemesis hole I felt bad but I also luaghed real hard
😂
You and I are so alike but totally opposite! You have all the power and no form, I have some form and no power! I absolutely love the videos. Thomas, you are the shiz-nit. Much love and respect sir. Hole 6 at my local course is my “ nemesis”...... that look you gave when you chained-out....f-ing classic! ☮️🥏⛳️
Thank you (from the both of us). Glad you like the videos🤘😀 .
And yeah the balance between the form and the power is very important (I´m beginning to understand). Have a good one! /Jonathan
Please guys come in Finland and even organize paid courses of beginners where you teache the techniques for us.😂 In Finland we have a lot of good rounds. Tho these videos are great and helpfull too and i can totally identify with Jonathan😂
