One of the best horns out there. I love a good K5LA, but there's something about the minor tuning on K5Hs that makes them that much cooler. I remember hearing one on a super humid walk just after sunset in 2004 (before I knew much about trains at all) on what I think was an NS B32-8. That minor chord kept playing back in my mind the whole rest of the evening after I got home and I loved it.
@@howlingwolven I figured, no wonder the Canadians even no longer spec specific horns. They just stick K5HL's on all the GEVO's, which those GEVO horns are a pain in the ass to take apart and maintain compared to the tried-and-true Canadian Songstress, the K3L.
This is a true movie train horn! I’ve actually heard the sound on Caillou, which is also Canadian, where he goes on a train actually and this sound effect of this horn I’m mentioning was actually recorded by Sound Ideas, which is also from there as well, in 1997 from an SD40-2W from this railroad. This sound was also used as Diesel’s horn in the CGI era of Thomas & Friends and it’s currently used as Mavis’ and Irving’s on Chuggington and in Trainz.
Great opening to your most excellent videos. Was just thru the region enroute to Whistler with another semi load of galvanized steel components for 2010 games. Unfortunatly no rail action all the way to Lillooet after unloading. Great trip however and great memories!! Keep the K5s coming.
What is so devastating is that these locomotives are still being used for CN freight runs but are having their K5's replaced with other crappy types of horns. CN ruins everything.
Nothing new. Many large conglomerate railriads do it when they take over smaller roads. For example, UP inherited some beautiful sounding Leslie S5ts from the Katy, Nathan M5s from Western Pacific, Nathan K5Hs from the CNW, and guess what they did. They were immediately removed and replaced with Leslie RS3ls, many if which sounded like shit, with only two or even just one bell working.
Stfu jackass. I'm going back to the 80s / early 90s when Leslie rs3ls ruled on the UP.RR, long before anyone saw a Nathan kvof any kind on UP and they embarked on taking over smaller roads like the WP (; primarily M5s( And the Katy, which had Leslie S5Ts on most of their 6:axle power, all of which disappeared after a couple of years.bDid you know that? We're you even born than? I still stand by what I said. Explain where I got it wrong! Why don't you learn some history on the subject before 2004; F##ktwat? I'm not new to this. You are!
wow, CN can be stupid sometimes and this is my biggest reason! replacing the erie, most beautiful, and the most spectacular horn in canadian history. so canadian national is replacing canadian original horns with squeaky, fouled horns?!?! why!?
The Railroad does not look at things the way you do, it's a business, it's all about profit. If the horn works, it's good. If not, they change it out with whatever they have, they don't know the difference between a New Cast P5 and a K5HL, it's just a horn to them, and as long as it works, the engine is good to go.
+Joe Dohn I know I just saw a BNSF And last night I saw a Santa Fe Numbered #777 It was used in the movie Unstoppable it was CN 7777 but they gave it to BNSF who owns ATSF / Santa Fe so they kept the number 777 and made it Santa Fe
+xxMineVSCraftxx Gaming & Railfanning That would be inaccurate. BNSF 777 Was never owned by the CN and infact, never the ATSF. That unit was built for the BNSF around 1997 iirc, 2 years after the merger. The unit's used in unstoppable were not the same units. Those units were CP AC440CW's and have been returned to the CP. 1208 is a W&LE SD40-2 If i recall.

They use K5's on some of the freight trains in my area. Long live BC Rail!
The k5h/k5l is still being sold, and the reason some are fading away is simply old age.
Who else loves that echo through the Canadian Mounties eh?. The crossing bell is a general signal type 1 electronic bell.

Well I'm glad the first BC Unit I caught down in Hammond, LA still had a good K5H.
Why replace those great and good working horns, and sound good?
IKR? It’s a real shame that CN replaced those beautiful horns on the ex-BCR units!
@@TheBCRailfan They get fouled up and damaged and there's no government requirement for a D minor tuned horn chord anymore.

LET THE K5H HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS OF CANADA!!!!!
The Nathan K5 series of horns was by far the best set of horns ever made. Too bad not many railroads use them.
CSX use to the horns in the 80s and 90s the K5H horns
In my opinion the p5a and the rs3l are tied for the best

You might be talking about the C44-9WL
It's really a shame that these BCOL units are nearly extinct. The red white and blue paint scheme is beautiful.
Reminds me of a late summer trip in 1997 north of Prince George listening to these echo off the desolate hills heading towards Pine Pass.
I freaking love K5h horns. Now the k5las are good for Amtrak locomotives but the k5h’s minor tuning makes it sound way better for freight trains.
every 80's movie at night
