To give some insight on how Japan handled the first year of release, which might help give context?
We had no official events in Set 1 and it feels like Cygames/Bushi wanted the actual community to form first before pushing big competition, and it was the same story as in English - it felt like neither company expected the game to be as popular or successful as it was on launch.
The Grand Prix events in Set 2 format only had a few hundred seats when thousands wanted to play, and they had to quickly inject more and more locations all over Japan with big venue space to try and satisfy this huge demand for competitive play. I think this is key - the companies could SEE the huge demand via social media & Bushi Navi signups at locals (shops with 16 seats would have 100+ applications) and they could quickly form a response to that demand as well. This year it's been much smoother - every GP has close to 2000 players, and Bushi doesn't have to do lottery anymore and it's first come first served on signups. Important to note that just like in English, these are free entry as well.
I really hope that for English we'll get GPs next year as well as their own thing, at least once per region per season in a major location in that continent would be really sweet. It's a lot harder to do than in Japan since the company's resources are scattered, but I can see that just like how Japan took the release months slowly to experiment and gauge interest, the English side is kind of doing the same.
Sorry for the long comment but hope this helps add some context!

Yeah, I 100% recognize this being a position they're taking to have something on the grounds that helps them understand the baselines as they go into a full release cycle next year. I think them establishing early on the monthly championships will is a great initiative to establish communities that will then carry the momentum of competitive play once the system is more robust.
While I have my concerns, I think in terms of where we are halfway into the year, with enough coverage of the events the game will have, and a blow out worlds; we'll be in a perfectly fine spot next year.

I am 100% convinced Bushi had no idea the game was going to do as well as it is over here. Meanwhile the locals I host get 16-20 players every Saturday, and I can't even get a strong confirmation on if we can host a Store Championship or when promos are arriving. Thank goodness the game is as fun as it is

100 per cent agree. They really didn’t expect this reaction, and they didn’t put a lot of effort on organized play.
Also here in Italy we have a small but strong community and it definitely feels like a relatively easy game to grasp for new players if only it was marketed a little bit stronger. The art is nice and the cost of entrance is not super high compared to other tcgs. I wish the best for the game because I enjoy it a lot and I hope they will put their heart in the organized play as well

Thank you so much for explaining it. I was so confused on what the plan for organized play was. I honestly thought and hoped bushiroad would've just added Shadowverse to one of their days for BCS and Springfest tourneys. I think trios would be so fun for shadowverse though

As some one coming from the yugioh scene. Regionals absolutely should be open play they are super fun to look forward too.

Yugioh regionals are a place where casual locals players can feel like they're competing and competitive players can get their fix. My entire shop travels to regionals and it's always an amazing after party. Part of the reason Yugioh has stuck on while the game has become an incomprehensible mess is how well it encourages regionals and locals to become their own teams.

I hope they will slowly introduce another circuit or some big tournaments (like Magic GPs) so even if they are disjointed from the worlds we can play more competitive (and still push sales, so people can buy more)
Potentially winning the regional in September with only set 1 online and then playing the worlds with set 3 out doesn’t make any sense

They’re so rare that I thought events didn’t even start here until I found one by the end of the month like 2 hours away.

Legit the worst competitive play program in the entire INDUSTRY like what was Cygames thinking 😭😭
Here’s hoping year 2 looks a lot better as Dragoborne had much more support in its short time

This game is really fun but playing at a comp level fucking sucks. This game will not last unless they change this structure. Theres hardly any way to play at a higher level.
