    Definition of backbeat
    : a steady pronounced rhythm stressing the second and fourth beats of a four-beat measure

    • @chipsnegativeharmonyrips7187
      @chipsnegativeharmonyrips7187 3 года назад

      That's right, backbeat just doesn't mean snare drum, it's specifically the beat that emphasized the second and fourth beats in four time

    Great video! As a disco drummer, I am definitely guilty of putting over 90% of my backbeats on the 2 and 4 ;) This is a fun way of loosening up that creativity!
    One thing that felt a bit iffy to me, though, is that you very clearly play your hihats with accents on the notes. This definitely adds to the overall feeling of a groove, so it might help newer drummers more if it is also indicated in the notation you give at the bottom of the video.

    I always thought it was important to let the music dictate the "beat" and not just change it up for the sake of changing it up. Additionally, some of the simple backbeat on 2 & 4 comes from the days of playing club gigs where keeping a dance floor packed all night was the goal..... nothing keeps a crowd dancing like a strong backbeat on 2 & 4. Being able to musically syncopate a rhythm is a great skill set, but there are times when other factors dictate a different approach!

    • @srichards1711
      @srichards1711 3 года назад +1

      The most talented drummers can keep the dance floor hopping while playing interesting, rhythms. Great drummers allow the music to dictate “exceptionally stimulating” beats. I hope to improve to that level. Jeff and other excellent RUclips drummers guide me to become more than just a 2 & 4 back beat player.
