Steve, I say this with appreciation for what you do. You weren't in the right headspace for this one. Go back and look at your 46&2 video. That energy you had to be curious, to ride the spiral to the end, you need that if you're going to go into the Lateralus album and beyond. You can do it, you were so exciting to watch in the 46&2 video because you were invested, researched and interested. Bring that shit back man, you're quality.
The band had been in a long legal battle after aenima. When coming back together after a long time apart they had to learn to work together again, this learning to communicate. How many bands have broken up after becoming famous and not being able to find that spark that made them famous? The time apart had crates a schism between them.
"a cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion." I take that verse as if someone is going through something and their way of dealing with it is in "cold silence" and the observers compassion may fade or atrophie
Could be. But I think moreso it's saying if two people refuse to communicate (whether we're talking two lovers, or even a parent/child), eventually they will lose compassion for each other - because that silence creates a barrier and wall that prevents communication, understanding, empathy for other's view, and compassion for the issues they're struggling with.
After watching this video for 20 years I realize this video is basically just a surreal illustration of the lyrics. It demonstrates the divide between the male and the female, one manipulating the other, their inability to communicate, making the other listen...it’s all in there.👍
This is why i watch tool reactions. But yours is dead on balls accurate. I've been working on this song, trying to turn it into a winter guard show. And the break down that you did with the lyrics, just gave me a fresh perspective on staging, and choreography ideas. I owe you man.
Schism-a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by differences in opinion or belief. He lost his religion when his mother passed away.
Keep going with Tool. I subscribed over a year ago when you did them. Stay clear from videos and stick to studio tracks and lyrics. It would take a whole college course in art to break down the song and the video separately. The interpretations you have can vary, intentionally. I see this as a when you are in a relationship that was fueled by desire and the fire will always flame out or fall apart if you fail at communicating with one another. She took his ear off to symbolize finally getting his attention and then they joined hands and bodies once again. First, they had to pull out the demons within that were plaguing the mind. That's what I see and I could be wrong. That's what makes it fun. You will enjoy the more you dive in, I promise.
Hell yeah brother. I agree. To me the music video felt like a couple taking acid at home knowing they are going to spend the night breaking each other down to analyze everything about each other and cut out the tumors and cast out the demons. Like emotional surgery on each other, removing the toxicity before it kills them
It’s actually Adam Jones that created the videos. He worked at a place that made masks & creatures & a bunch of artistic stuff. This video is unrelated to the music. It's just showing the things that Jones was involved in.
i think its about a relationship falling apart "i know the pieces fit" like we were meant to be together. but its art you gotta interpret it personally.
🤣 Just know that every Tool fan has gone through the same thing of trying to understand what the lyrics mean. I've loved Tool for about 15 years and I'm still here pulling the same wtf reactions like you have. Just don't steer yourself down the Tool rabbit hole, it's endless. Or do. It's wonderful.
The religious interpretation is a pretty safe bet, considering the name. You might want to look up the Great Schism of 1054 between the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. The impact this event had on the secular world is momumental. The cultural and political echoes can still be felt to this very day.
The meaning is about deeper connections people have on a soul level that go into separation and must reunite despite the lack of clarity. Anyone whom has experienced it understands it clearly. You were there all along inside of me is the key. The metaphor of this can be used to understand other phenomena. There are many concepts if you see them. There are lots of tool clowns out there so be cautious of projection. In truth just feel the music. Thats the point. Learn to feel again.
if you want to see his views on religion, he has a crazy story told through the song Judith in his other band "A Perfect Circle". People are talking about recommendations but this is the one.
Ive always thought of this song as sort of a modern parable about the tower of bable . Everyone speaks the same language and is UNDERSTOOD then the tower falls and our communication is fractured and separated and so are we. I may be way the F off
For me this songs always been about the battle inside myself and my demons. And how I act, and the projection on my wife or girlfriend. It's a hard reality of acts effect others
Is those little guys the rot that comes from our minds? Before everything seemed like everything fits, but then the bad ideas emerge and try to stick. No idea :)
I LOVE that you are choosing to broaden your music catalogue. It takes a lot to remove yourself from your comfort zone when it comes to genres of music you like to listen to. Tool is a perfect "tool" to use to do this.
I had to unfollow about 15 people today because they comment in the good point of the music. Stevie knows when to step in and make a comment. So many people stop it when it’s about to be hype. Nj Stevie
Visuals are so unique because Tool’s guitarist Adam Jones was a special effects artist before the band. He’s created and/or had a hand in all their videos and visuals. Also, I agree with other commenters that have suggested Right in Two. Amazing song. And you’ll enjoy breaking down the lyrics.
I know nothing about art and visuals, but the songs to me feels like a relationship. Two people alien to eachother, trying to understand one another. It starts off great but communication crumbles.
The video that you saw was created by Adam Jones. Tool's guitarist. I believe he was just having fun… messing around? He made a few others for Sober, Stinkfist, more…
I’ve been listening to them half my life and I’m just starting to understand some of their songs. You nailed it on your first try on some of your other Tool analysis.
Priceless reaction. Tool is different. They are very different and artistically genius. They’re one of the greatest rock bands of our time all will come to know this in the end.
"WTF this about? Religion, politics, Race, personal relationships?" Yes. ✌️😎🌀 schism /ˈs(k)izəm/ noun a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by differences in opinion or belief.
Dang! You caught on to what might be one of the meanings right away. Want some more good and challenging lyrics? Check out The Mars Volta Roulette Dares.
My interpretation is that the title and the lyrics evoke the Great Schism of the Church in 1054, but also how two people who love each other can be driven apart by their convictions and failure to communicate and reconcile their differences. "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers."
Tool - Right in Two!!!! You will dig it! One of my absolute favorite of theirs! I got turned on to them in 1994 and haven't looked back! Their videos have always been out there, just watch a lyrics video on the first listen.
I always viewed it as the artist's vagueness. If an artist is vague enough, some things can apply to several things at the same time while speaking to several people all together.
he video, which has a lot of variants of interpretation, has a psychedelic feel and full of various concepts like the alchemical concept commonly known as “squaring the circle,” male and female interacting at a subhuman level, symbols of purification human mind and body, and the union of the opposites.
Bruh you feel exactly like most of us felt the first time we saw or listened to this 😂🤘🏼🙏🏼 If you need a little video guide to explore this generations most artistic and genuine band I can help I bet
The music videos have very little, if anything, to do with the content of the lyrics. The guitarist creates the music videos - he has a background in special effects and makeup, and he even shows up in the credits of the original Jurassic Park movie. They're definitely an acquired taste, and I don't think many in the Tool fandom would disagree with me when I say you're probably better off looking for lyric videos or just official audio.
completely disagree. interpretively, these two beings are the protagonists of the mentioned schism, and the course of the video illustrates them trying to find the part/piece that is the source of the infection/problem - like a parasitic leech. Find the source of the schism within oneself, isolate and remove it. This is universally true in nearly every relationship collapse. Once removed, they rejoin to the repeated phrase "I remember the pieces fit"
Steve I have always took this as a relationship song. You and your wife “ fit” the spark , passion brought you together . Over time both grow and change. If communication is not maintained , things will fester and fall apart , crumble . The video, at first I believed was filler . Now I see it as religious interpretation of a man and woman relationship. Two separate beings coming together become one . To become whole , perfect. I feel this song should be played to EVERY couple seeking divorce. What happened ?? The pieces fit , you know , because you watched them fall apart , fall away , the tower tumble 😥
They have another video of Schism, with war and geopolitical divisions being explored. But per usual, Tool songs are multi-layered and the premise can be applied to many different concepts. This song, to me, is about the Human Condition, overall. #TOOLARMY 🤘
This song is actually about how his band split apart and then got back together. They are some of the highest i.q. people we know in one band and they ALL just butted heads and couldn't agree
Tool is a band where it makes you think.. makes you delve into the lyrics and use your brain. like Eminem. I've always said that Eminem and Tool were the only 2 that do this to people.
For a change of pace... please consider doing some Volbeat (they're a Danish rock band formed in Copenhagen). Consider Doc Holiday, Still Counting, Shotgun Blues, or A Warrior's Call .... so good!!
@StevieKnight Right in Two best Tool song at least my fav. It's so true with humans in history. "monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground, silly monkeys, give them thumbs, they make a club and beat their brothers down"
@stevieknight STEVIE MY BROTHER IN-CHRIST & EVERYONE TOOL AND SLIPKNOT IS DEFINITELY INTO SATAN WORSHIP THEY HAVE BOTH STATED IT IN INTERVIEWS THEY ARE NOT SHY OF IT AND THEY DEFINITELY DO NOT HIDE IT AND IT IS VERY SAD TOO BECAUSE BOTH GROUPS HAVE GREAT VOICES….
Its about an extremely toxic but extremely passionate relationship that burned down by its own flames. One partner is SCREAMING, trying to put the pieces back together, trying to convince his partner to "strengthen our communication" and warns of the dangers of "cold silence" and how it can diminish compassion between "supposed lovers"
I take this song as meaning a failing relationship or a big argument... two lovers and a lack of communication. I take the two aliens as representing the lovers. I'm not quite sure what the tiny person with just a mouth represents. you are right about the division part though, that's literally what schism means. this is one of tool's best songs imo.
the video is just wild. The guitarist Adam Jones did the special effects for a bunch of movies. It's kind of his style and often doesn't really tie into the song so much. Probably a bunch of drugs back in the day. lmao.
Love your lyrical analysis, and especially the bravery it takes to do that analysis on the fly, willing to be wrong, test your theory, and keep delving for that deeper meaning. Much appreciated. Also, I think your initial analysis about it being about society at large is valid, but I also think the song gets into individual relationships, and how those break down from lack of communication just as religion, politics, and general society does the same.
Dude I LOVE tool. My recommendation is not to watch their actual videos, but instead do lyric videos. At least for the first listen.
Seconds this… enjoy the music
This
This is wisdom
I can't stand when people pay too much attention to the music videos. The music is the main medium here

Spiral out!
Keep on with the TOOL journey!!! 🔥
The great schism of 1054 split the orthodox and catholic. Orthodox means original
Ortho- proper/true; doxa- faith
The band had been in a long legal battle after aenima. When coming back together after a long time apart they had to learn to work together again, this learning to communicate. How many bands have broken up after becoming famous and not being able to find that spark that made them famous? The time apart had crates a schism between them.
Couldn't had said better myself. That's exactly right.
"a cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion." I take that verse as if someone is going through something and their way of dealing with it is in "cold silence" and the observers compassion may fade or atrophie

@@Frostrazor I think that's what I was trying to say.
But then he says between supposed lovers
Fun fact Stevie Maynard Keenan the lead singer graduated from West point, and has an IQ of 200 beast mode!!!💯🔥
Schisim is about the #1 killer of ANY relationship: lack of proper communication. That's all he's talking about here.
This is the true currency of humanity!
After watching this video for 20 years I realize this video is basically just a surreal illustration of the lyrics. It demonstrates the divide between the male and the female, one manipulating the other, their inability to communicate, making the other listen...it’s all in there.👍
YES! Also, Once they rid themselves of the parasite(s) within themselves they became one.
The Pot is probably my favorite TOOL song. Would love to see that reaction for sure!
Yes please.
I think Stevie would enjoy this one a lot.
This is why i watch tool reactions. But yours is dead on balls accurate. I've been working on this song, trying to turn it into a winter guard show. And the break down that you did with the lyrics, just gave me a fresh perspective on staging, and choreography ideas. I owe you man.
I definitely recommend Aenima. I think you will love it.

“You gone zoom in on the blood cell in the alien’s head and shit?” - Stevie 2022
I appreciate you really trying to understand this man. Well done.

You are 100% right he said about how many are destroyed delivered
TOOL ARMY dropping in. Appreciate your reaction.
Stevie….seriously! LOVE watching a beautiful mind at work!!!
It's simply about a breakdown of a relationship.

TOOL is a religion or a way of life haha
PLEASE do TOOL the pot next
And H the song Maynard made for his son.
Two of my absolute favorites
You're going to hear this a lot... NEVER use the TOOL "Music Videos" to react. Lyrics videos work best.
I LOVE that you are choosing to broaden your music catalogue. It takes a lot to remove yourself from your comfort zone when it comes to genres of music you like to listen to. Tool is a perfect "tool" to use to do this.
Stevie, yup, so deep and alluring. Their timing changes and flow switches are sick. Glad you liked this one.

"I don't know what they're talking about but that's heavy though" ... I mean same honestly.
It's about relationships falling apart. The aliens are a couple struggling to reconnect with each other.
12:28 "How the fuck this shit ain't age restricted?" Lmaooo that's that content brain speaking but shit had me dyin 😂
Sober Maynard thinks in ways an LSD user wishes he could.
Between supposed lovers, between supposed brothers

Great honest reaction to this! 💪 Catching them bars! 😎
My first real concert was Tool at SDSU around 2005 / 2006. They are so good live.
Great reaction Stevie, I lol half way through it 😄
I've read that this song dealt with a period of time where there was strife within the band.
Tool - Right in Two!!!! You will dig it! One of my absolute favorite of theirs! I got turned on to them in 1994 and haven't looked back! Their videos have always been out there, just watch a lyrics video on the first listen.

gotta keep the TOOL train rolling man

I thought this for almost my entire life, but re-examining it today after some really bad life experiences, it hit me like a truck.
One of the coolest bass lines ever
Dude, you act like you're missing it, when you're fucking getting it exactly, the first time. I know I sure didn't. I'm super duper impressed!
Tower of Babel and the fall of communication
Steve I have always took this as a relationship song.
You and your wife “ fit” the spark , passion brought you together .
Over time both grow and change. If communication is not maintained , things will fester and fall apart , crumble .
The video, at first I believed was filler .

Great to see you react to Tool.
Would love to see you get into Pearl Jam's first album TEN. Literally a top ten album all genres imo.
That album was fire! Everying about it except Jeremy lol.
Black is one of my favorites. Would love to see Stevie break down those lyrics. Absolutely fire
I think this song is about a failing relationship and the video is about…….
Literally my reaction to the video ! 😂😂
I’m so excited you did this !!! More Tool please !
Wen i hear Maynard sing it puts me in a philosophical head space for days at times
Coveting and conviction are two different things. Schism means a large divide between two distinct sections.
I don't blame you. I tend to listen to Tool for the melodies and zone out on the lyrics lmao.
For a change of pace... please consider doing some Volbeat (they're a Danish rock band formed in Copenhagen). Consider Doc Holiday, Still Counting, Shotgun Blues, or A Warrior's Call .... so good!!

Greatest dis track ever written.
"There be some creepy shit goin on" is the best description I've ever heard of Tool 😆
the video is just wild. The guitarist Adam Jones did the special effects for a bunch of movies. It's kind of his style and often doesn't really tie into the song so much. Probably a bunch of drugs back in the day. lmao.
Tool's videos remind me of the nightmares I've had when I was sick with a high fever.
Control, Death, Rebirth
This is Tool’s version of a breakup song.
"I dont know what the fuck he is talking about, but that was heavy." Listening to tool for the first time in a nutshell.
I’m a total fan of you man but you just won me over with your interest in tool.
Steve you're the best brother. Love your reactions your social critiques I've learned a lot from you listen so thanks
You’re good at this… thanks for the entertainment
Love your review! Beo, everyone does drugs lol we all pick different vices but we all have them.
Top Tier Lyrical Analysis, your reactions got me dying though 😂
Understandable, young man. One does not throw on Tool to just F around. It's always heavy lifting. But look how one develops from all that lifting...
All video laughing, great bro.
My general understanding with Tool's music, a lot of it is metaphysical a lot as well...
