Here are my first impressions of the new DZOFILM Pictor 12-25mm (& 20-55mm)
Do you use cine zooms?
Cheers,
Flo
Another question: Did you check with DZOFILM if they consider the minimal focus change of the 12-25 while zooming in spec?
(Defects can always happen)
I’m gunna be buying a cine lens but I think I’ll wait till Black Friday. DZOFILM are definitely on my radar though.
absolutely love your content! hello from australia!
Hey mate, Thanks so much!!
Loving the snow footage! xx
Thanks :) !! xx
great video! love the shots you got from this lens. seems like a great choice for a zoom lens with prime quality. Also, the energy of your explaining throughout the whole video was spot on. Great work!
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Great presentation. The wide shots looked amazing! Spot on reference to the revenant too. That was one a heck of a quick drawing from your wife!
Thanks!! And yes, she's pretty talented :)
I really admire your work sir. I have learned many things from you
Thanks for the kind words :) !!
Was actually researching these lens for the past month. Looking forward to your future reviews on these as I’m considering getting at least one!
Me too man, been looking at them for so long! Very keen to start using them properly :)
The WS looked amazing. Good shots!
Thank you!!
You footage always looks amazing. Great video!
Thanks so much man! This was just some quick test footage but currently editing some shots I took at sunset and it looks pretty nice :). Can’t wait to share them!
Man these lenses are exciting, thanks for the showcase Flo! Might pick these up in the long term. I know for Doco work, they can be extremely helpful having the versatility, but I know you love Roger Deakins and he sticks to primes, it’s a hard choice!
They really are!! Haha, Sir Deakins can have his own custom made primes and the team and time to create the most amazing images out there, I am just shooting short docos as a solo shooter :)
Wonderful vid! I had just put the DZO parfocal on my list of things I'm going to get. I got the Meike 35mm after watching your vid along with a couple of other RUclipsrs, a little while a go and have really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I'm a hobbyist so I may have to wait 😕. A Hasselblad is next 🤭. This year fingers crossed. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!! I love the Meikes too, great value and beautiful look.
I still intend to use both brands since one is primes and one zooms for me.
Hasselblad sounds pretty good :)
I was close to get the DZO 14-30mm but this new 12-25mm is very interesting, looking forward for your full review of it, the footage you showed in this video looks very good to me. Subscribed
Thank you :)
which one did you get?
Would LOVE TO SEE a direct comparison between these and the meike s35 primes as I am currently deciding between the two options for my Blackmagic 6k
Had a feeling you'd go in this direction. :)
Great review, they do look awesome, and give you the ability to zoom but on the same quality (or better) as the Meike prime cine lenses. I did weight up between the DZO 10 -24 MFT and 3 x Meike primes (12, 16 and 25) for my setup and went for the primes on the basis that if one was broken, I have 2 others to use. Whereas if the DZO got damaged i would be game over. And that the primes are T2.2 rather than 2.8 (all the more important on an MFT...).
Onwards and upwards sir :)
Thanks!! And yes, I had been thinking about cine zooms for a very long time and especially since these came out.
Totally understand your reasoning as well!
Definitely looking to add the 12-25mm to the collection
It’s a pretty solid option when it comes to wide focal lengths and quite useful as part of a kit!
Hey! Thanks for the Test. Did you test the 12-25 on a Gimbal yet?
Hi there!
Have you done any further test to see if these lenses are color matched to the 20-55 ? In the video you mention they intercut easily, but I still see some warmer tendency in the 12-25. Have you noticed anything more after using them?
Hey Flo, great video, was just gonna ask for the handheld shot did you / do you use the follow focus I have the same one and while I use the ZCam so may be different felt the weight on my wrist on my right hand a lot, I stopped using it with the 18-35 as it would slip and the teeth were a bit shoddy and as the range is super short I just went to the classic left hand under the barre, though now I have my samyang set I thought i'd test it out! l Just wondered your thoughts on this? Also for the lens review seeing how they will compare against your photo lenses would be nice and the primes. Also tried to send as many DZO BMD and docu shooters your way, so hopefully you have picked up a few subs along the way. Any way Great content. my personal thought on Cine Zooms is exactly what you said. I think they advantage to someone like yourself or event / wedding shooters is being parfocal. you loose a bit of performance in the edges but having that range in one go and to maintain focus is just ideal. some of these lenses end up being insane too recently had a play with the Arri 65-300, While I was working at BSC expo. Just insane lens.
Hello, thanks for the review. As you have used the 12-25mm for awhile now, how do you think it compares to other dzofilm primes such as the vespid 16mm t2.8? Considering the Vespids are full frame…do you think the image quality of the Pictors are as good as the vespid primes on the BMPCC6K pro?
Looking forward to your reviews on these lenses. I’m seriously considering their Vespid Primes.
Thanks!! The Vespid Primes look amazing, only ever saw great content from them.
I would use the 20-55mm as my first zoom. but the wide shot reminded me on revenant too. best Dominik
I am the same, that is the reason I was interested in DZO in the first place :)
Thanks for the video Flo. Really helpful!
I’m considering getting these lenses and was just wondering if they worked well with gyro stabilization in davinci?
Thanks for watching!!
I haven't been able to use them with the Gyro yet but I don't see why they wouldn't :)
what if any is the difference between a temperature of the picture between 12-25 and 14-30mm? Ive seen the video that 14-30 changes the temperature of the picture comparing to bigger zooms from Dzofilm
Great review. I own DZO Pictor Zoom 20-55 and 50-125 I was interested about the 14-30 wide until I saw test footage and reviews. DZO had quality issues on that lens that they have confirmed. Image was clearly warmer than the 20-55 and 50-125. I hope they have managed to fix this problem with this 12-25 if yes, I believe it's a must get lens for me then :)
I like image out of these zooms a lot. so much that I've been hardly considering about selling out my other prime set and invest all-in to DZO Vespids as well. These zooms are really good for the "everyday work" but still I much prefer to use primes on more 'cinematic' projects like shorts, musicvideos, etc. Projects that need more planning and crew but on the other side they give you more control how and why you choose something over another.
Thanks!! The Vespids look amazing, every time I see footage shot on them I really love the image. And yes primes are always better when you have control and can plan things ahead. For doco work the zooms should be super handy!
@@OfTwoLands Yeah these Pictors are really good for doco work and why not a good option to shoot shortfilms or musicvideos as well! I am sure you will like them. But be warned after some time with real cinema style lenses, you don't want to go back on any photolenses anymore. These will spoil you but in a good way :D
which one would you go for 14-30 or 12-25. after seeing few reviews i think 12-25 seems to be a better choice.... whats your take on this ?
Great video! It inspired me to pick up the 12-25mm. Quick question, did you have any issues swapping the PL mount for the EF mount? The EF bayonet seems to be too small to fit after taking off the PL mount on my set.
Thank you!! They came with EF installed so I only removed the mounts for the shims not swap from PL. However I did it with the Vespids and was a super quick and easy process.
Did you end up solving this? Same issue here with the 12-25 EF adapter not fitting the lens. We needed it for a shoot so we ended up removing the inner black piece on the EF bayonet that was preventing it from fitting. Hoping that's just a temporary fix.
DZO lenses have intrigued me for some time - they look like they pair nicely with the P6K pro. I love the look of my current lenses (Zeiss Milvus's) - they're also really fast but having a zoom would be really handy sometimes. Nice review Flo °¬)
Thanks man! Very keen to keep using these, best of both worlds for me :)
What type of lens would you recommend for the blackmagic pocket 4k, specifically for real estate photography? Interior and exterior?
With the BMPCC4K I always loved using the Lumix 12-25, very versatile. Otherwise if you need wider and faster then the Laowa primes are pretty good!
I wonder why they release a 12-25 when they already have an existing 14-30 that just recently came out.
That being said it might be the better addition in term of focal lengths since the 20-55 has the wider range covered.
Those Pictor zooms seem to be a pretty great kit for most purposes.
Enjoy your stay in Australia mate 🙋🏼♂️
Thanks mate!!
I think as you said when you have the 12-25 and the 20-55 you really cover a wide range with just two lenses without too much overlap.
Very excited for these :)
What about iso. 3500 iso in bmpcc 6k pro will be noise on it?. And also indoor filming
ISO 3200 and 1250 work well for low light and indoor filming :)
Good Morning, to use on Blackmagic 6K you have to install the EF conversion kit, right ?
Hey, yes you do need to change the mount :)
I love them. I own the FX30, but I don't see the lenses with a native E-Mount. Do you think I should get an adapter? I've heard bad things about adapters, and I don't want to ruin brand new lenses. Is there anything you could please recommend me?
You can get the Catta Zoom I think in E mount :)
Personally I always prefer to avoid adapters when possible especially with heavy lenses.
@Of Two Lands Yeah. The thing is I want the actual mm on the Pictor ones. 50mm on my FX30 is a little too tight. Thank you, though!
Appreciate [yet another] diligent presentation. Leave me with just one question; how to shim the lenses or a lens (any lens in need of shimming). Anyway thank you.
Thank you!! It is just a matter of adding / removing shims between the body and the mount. The only actual action to do is to unscrew the 8/9 screws in the mount and repeat that a few times until it is right. You can find and watch tutorials online, which is what I did. It seems hard at first but it really isn't :)
@@OfTwoLands I have a tendency to over-think. I will take you word for it. Has been working so fare 🙂
Great stuff as always! Funny you mentioned the matching look, to me these two lenses do not match at all haha. Okay I am being a little dramatic with the "at all" but the wide looks so much warmer on the left. Look at the paper, the difference is quite there.
Thanks!! I was filming with the sun setting coming through the window so the light changed a bit over the time I was recording and I also graded these very quickly since it was just test footage. I think seeing more of the wood table makes also the image warmer as a whole.
@@OfTwoLands Hah! Maybe a client buys the wooden table excuse...😁 but of course changing lighting conditions do make a point. On its own it looked great outside.
Great Video!
Im considering getting DZO lenses but have A Zcam With MFT mount And Blackmagic 6K with EF mount. If i would go for the DZO Linglung series for the Zcam i cant use them on Blackmagic 6K... I have an EF mount for Zcam but think then it will vignette since there is a speedbooster that also vignette my Meike S35 lens i got🙃🙂 maybe gonna try The EF mount without Speedbooster
Thank you!! I guess you will have to make a decision between the two. Personally I would invest in the DZO S35 zooms since you already also have the Meike Primes to go with in the same mount.
My next lens purchase will definitely be a Cine Zoom variant, what other manufacturers can be recommended in this field?
This is my first one so I can't really recommend others but I know Sigma, Tokina, Canon and many more brands offer them :)
Amateur question: Is there an automatic motorized “two channel” LiDAR autofocus system for non-parfocal lenses to kind of make them parfocal?
I have no idea, and not sure if it is possible, maybe someone in the comments can answer that?
how do you like the dzo compared to your contax ziess?
They are too different to be compared to be honest. Vintage prime stills lenses vs Modern Cine Zooms. I love them both!
« I ask my wife to draw something quiclky. »
The drawing 🤯🤯🤯
Haha, yeah she is very talented!
Do you know if you could use these lenses in combination with the pocket 4k and a speedbooster?
Edit:love the vid!
Not too sure to be honest, maybe someone in the comments could answer?
I know they make a couple of MFT zooms though.
@@OfTwoLands thanks for the reply! I’ve used those a couple of times but I hate the MFT mount especially with the not so solid mount on the pocket. Speedboosters attached to a cage are pretty much the only way to go as I’ve seen so many pockets with loose lens mounts with rentals. 😅
These can't be used on BMPCC4K with SpeedBooster. DZO Pictor Zooms extrude from the back when EF-mount is attached. It would hit Speedbooster glass and possibly scratch both lens and SpeedBooster. Not recommended to try.
@@vinovinkkeli thanks for the explanation and crushing my hopes for the perfect lens combination ;)
Are you French/Australian? Great review, fascinating accent!
Haha yes and thank you! Born and grew up in France but moved to Australia aged 21 and spent 10 years there.
My wife is Australian as well and I have dual citizenship, so bit of a mixed I guess :)
Looks like these lenses fit your work! The images the lenses produce are great for docu or narrative work but I would definitely not use them for commercial or corporate work. Chromatic aberration at the sides is noticeable especially at high contrast areas. I have edited footage with these lenses and a 6K pro and the chromatic aberration is there at the sides. They're so bad that I can't event call them a "character" feature of the lens. Still a good lens set but not for jobs that require super clean images.
Thanks for your input, I'll be sure to check this out! I rarely need a super clean image but that is good to know!
Amazing imagery. I don't know if this is the lens, the camera or the cinematographer
Thanks !! Hopefully all ☺️
Is that a new intro?😍
Yes, I have had this one since the first video of 2023 :)
@@OfTwoLands I missed a few, just saw it today! I just finished the video, I can see you're very excited about the lenses. Can't wait to see the review!
@@kunsunrethy Thanks man!
Will we see your shots from Fujinon 18-55?
I do not currently own that lens.
@@OfTwoLands perhaps you were planning to take it for a test?
@@user-pz1vi2bg7s the Fujinon 18-55 isn't available on the EF (or PL) mount. Only E-mount and MFT.
Is it to me or have your French/Aussie accent returned more again?
Haha, you mean more French or more Aussie? Maybe it’s the slightly different camera angle and sound 😂
