This is going to sound like nit picking, but Adam really shouldn't keep saying "I'm not a game developer and I don't know what I'm talking about, but...". Adam, you play video games, you know what's fun and what isn't, you have an opinion, it's okay man. You don't need to be a game developer to say that something is good or bad, mate. You have my permission as somebody who has done game development in some way or another, it's okay.

I know what you mean. I think it is a byproduct of being a spokesperson on the internet. Spending years having strangers on the internet saying 'well actually' to everything you say probably makes you unconsciously pad everything you say in an effort to curb the crowds.

I don't think the game is bad it looks great visually. I just find it insulting that they are charging full price for an "early access" title. With promises to "add things later" is ridiculous. We as consumers are letting them get away with this. It has since sold a ton of copies. All companies care about the money a game is making. If they see its selling tons, then they won't see selling a hollow game with no content is a bad thing. To me that's why it deserves the hate it's getting. I will not be that person defending this shitty practice because it's a "good foundation." Its out now! We're spending full price now! Sorry rant over.

Sea of Thieves seems like it should have been more of a physics-based romp with an emphasis on players making their own experiences. Like, a head-scratcher for me is why gold gets absorbed and becomes a simple number -- surely, in a game about thievery, money and goods should always be a physical thing that someone can give or take. That alone is a bit of a red flag to me, that the devs aren't making a game where people get to play out their pirate fantasies, they're making a game where players can repeat pirate-themed quest loops. Nevermind that they took the act of lawless sea-stealing and, in a great irony, systemized it.
That's probably the biggest problem, right? That this is a game that turns an inherently unruly, unstable lifestyle into a consistent, safe experience. The romance of piracy is the danger and haphazard roughness to it, rewarding cunning and cutthroat decision-making. If Sea of Thieves doesn't foster that, it's in a poor place.

Funhaus and all the media hyped No Man's Sky to the infinite before it launched and that game was pure garbage. It's completely different with Sea of Thieves, I don't even remember Funhaus talking about it before. SoT is amazing, with beautiful stunning graphics and the best ocean in the history of games. And in fact it is a multiplayer coop game, something that No Man's Sky (SONY) promised and didn't delivered.

Filipe Herbert As it happens, NMS eventually did deliver on pretty much everything they said they would. I'm playing it right now. It's genuinely fun, or at least the kind of game I like. Probably not for everyone though. It's a slow burn. But I also didn't buy it until recently, so I wasn't one of the people disappointed by it at launch.

What Adam said , "I never felt that I was promised anything", is the most sane and adult point of view I've seen.
Gamers get hyped and make up all these weird things in their mind and complain when their crazy ideas, which were never promised, are not fulfilled. We live in an age of hype, which births erroneous speculation which in turn births disappointment. That is totally on us gamers not the developers.

Altered Beast NO, this is not the gamers, what are you talking about. The problem isn't the game not making all the promises , its a severe lack of content. Microsoft constantly featured this as one of their big games at E3 presentations over the year and Rare's director say it was their most ambitious game ever.
Comments like yours are why games like Sea of Thieves come out the way they are because people are such enablers. Its on them not us.

    • @eggheadchristian
      @eggheadchristian 6 лет назад

I've been saying the same thing since the whole NMS debacle. When I got it and played it for the first time it was EXACTLY what I was expecting it to be. :/ The devs said repeatedly that it WASN'T going to be another Star Citizen, but instead it's focus would be more on just walking around and looking at planets and shit. Just real simple. But people STILL were expecting some crazy fucking genre revolutionizing RPG shit.
I knew a guy who would literally be like "Dude, we HAVE to play this together when it comes out. We're gonna be fucking space pirates and attack people and build a huge base on a planet and be the most infamous players and have our own space station and build a zoo with all the unique animals, and did you know the game is literally infinite and everything in it is totally unique??"
And my response was usually just "What the fuck are you talking about?"
He watched like half a trailer and read some online hype and COMPLETELY misunderstood what the game was, and I feel like that's probably exactly what 90% of the people who hated that game did.

    • @eggheadchristian
      @eggheadchristian 6 лет назад

The sailing aspect is really fun and it's a co-op game where you not only need the other people but you need to communicate and communicate effectively to play successfully or even competently. I have 3 people I played with (before we got bored and dropped it) that I know personally and would get on conference calls with. We all have different jobs and responsibilities. It's the best game I've played in recent memory in that regard of making full use of 2, 3, and 4 player co-op and communication.
It's just criminally close-ended at this point. Every mission sends you like 2 islands away from where you are and there's an outpost every third island. So the idea of going on some long sailing adventure is a lie. You never really create a story for yourself because you sail for 5 seconds, complete 1 of 3 different piss-easy grind missions, then sail 5 seconds back for your pathetic reward.
The combat is also absolute garbo and the ship respawn is fine, but the individual respawn is fucking horseshit. All they need do is make it to the bottom of your ship and spawn kill the person who repairs while their guys shoot your hull. There's no reward for doing it unless they have treasure. There's no reward for killing the kraken. There is no progression in abilities, equipment, or difficulty. You play to grind gold to buy cosmetic updates for all the same tools you already have. There are no better ships, no better weapons, nothing that gives you an edge in combat regardless of your dedication to the grind. There's not enough variety to grinding, not enough of a reward for doing it, and not enough of a meaningful end goal to justify it.
I'm still in simply because its barebones nature is more or less a promise that more is to come. I'm probably going to pick this game back up once the first update drops just to see the scale of the things they are changing. My hope is that that stripped down nature of the game is strategic and done to preserve game stability while they work on the inevitable teething issues that MMOs experience. What they need is a MASSIVE update that addresses most or all of these issues in some way. I'm not expecting perfection, but I am expecting a concerted effort to expand on the beautiful framework they've laid out. My apprehension is not knowing the breadth and depth of the updates because pretty much everything but the sailing needs either fixing or expanding upon.

That way not only are you changing up the formula every once in a while, but also incintevizing other crews to work together to defeat them.

I think one thing everyone is forgetting is that Rare while they have been a know developer they are not a big company, they haven't had enough employees. Sooo the lack of content is really not that surprising because it takes a lot of time to develop games when it comes to modeling and scripting. To be-honest they actually add a whole lot of stuff to it for them having such a small team.

I have had amazing experiences with SoT so far. To address what Adam said, I have encountered Galleons where I have communicated in game with emotes and in game chat that I am friendly. I have even gotten onto others ships and set sail with them, attacked skull forts, fought the kraken, done voyages and just explore. This game is not a lead you by the hand game. I would say this game is more like minecraft rather than destiny. You aren't hear to "beat the game", you are on the Sea of Thieves for the shared experiences you have along the way.

Major_Lag It's basic human nature, people tend to become the people they surround themselves with, which unintentionally creates an echo chamber because everyone in the group most likely thinks the same on most things and shares the same opinion on a majority of things. I'm here for Bruce's wheezy laughter which is sadly non-existent in this podcast but that's what the backlog is for. There are podcasts where they do disagree with each other but like I said similar friends who are always with each other become more similar and therefore tend to have the same opinion and shared perspective on things. If it was a topic in which they truly wanted to have a full open all sides discussion they should have a guest on that is not from the group with not strictly an opposing side but not the same group think that comes from always being with each other and seeing how much already of things from the same perspective. I love the podcasts because they are long and I have no life but what I really enjoy is watching my buff Huskies and my queen get down on some games, drop some fucked up jokes and have a really good time while Bruce has a Wheezy asthma attack of laughter which inevitably ends in him farting in which James asks for matches.

That's fine and while I do agree with you, I personally think it makes for very boring content.

    • @OddJames
      @OddJames 6 лет назад

Major_Lag yes I agree hearing people agree all the time does get boring what it's way better than those childish blood Sports everyone wants drama and arguments but like you said in your original post and which I agree with they just need more of a diverse conversation with somebody who isn't going to just with them because they are from the same group or have the same perspective because it does turn into a circle jerk instead of questioning each other it's like you said mainly just agreeing and then moving on rather than explain to all sides. Plus it's a format that they are still working on they are working on now to talk about political topics without being too bias and one sided but it's hard one like I said they all hang out together probably think alike and are in California, so by Cali state law they have to hate and fear Trump or get banished from the land of giving yourself Awards self-congratulatory disconnect from the rest of humanity. Lmao. I'm not even a trump supporter I just find it hilarious and sad that people hate and fear Him because they are told to by the media and other leftist libs, most of them don't even have a reason they believe he said something you never said or did something he never did in which Hillary Clinton has done almost everything they claim him of doing by silencing victims of her husband, being a Goldwater girl and calling black youth super predators in the 90s while not accepting gay marriage until she realized she could get votes, not to mention the fact that her in the DNC colluded against Bernie Sanders another Democratic candidate in order to give her the nomination which is fucking illegal and she still walking around talking about how she lost because if everyone else instead of the real reason, HER. Now she's back opening her mouth and everyone's telling her to shut up cuz they're sick of her same old bullshit disrespecting and trying to separate half the nation just cuz they didn't fall for her and then calling the news media that are sick and tired of her bullshit sexiest cuz they don't want to hear her spread more hatred and bigoted statements like half of America are sexist racist which in reality Hillary's been that way her whole life and needs a fucking mirror but vampires don't have Reflections in mirrors. Lmao. It's quite pathetic how quick people are willing to forget that she literally committed multiple felonies well running her campaign and then and other headlines we have one woman being arrested for 5 years for voter fraud which is excessive but we all know who she voted for... the one to set voter fraud doesn't exist, who like Europe soon will want to give non-citizens the right to vote and make political changes in a country that they are not a legal citizen of which is fucking pathetic! Life's crazy and too many people are one-sided instead of researching all sides before coming to a conclusion or the just start told what to do and how to feel and do so.

If anyone else played Pirates of the Caribbean Online, that had:
    - Fleets of NPC ships for player ships to attack together.
    - Raid-like events where a bunch of undead pirates would attack an island and people had to sail to the island and protect the beach.
Other features I can't think of but I feel like Sea of Thieves could use some of those ideas to bring that direction.

In the game there is a giant skull cloud that floats in the air which indicates a raid island, to get the loot on that island you have to team up with another pirate crew in order to survive.

What's going on at the studios/publishers or whoever handles a game like that?
Not one person can say: "hey guys this game is looking good for a demo but not for a full game if we're gonna charge so much"
... seriously not a single person that worked on that thought something was off?
If someone noticed and actually said something and was ignored, that means they be GREEDY, and they should be publicly pointed at and made fun of so this can stop...
    (I didn't buy this)

The fact that this was intended to be on gamepass from the get go pretty much nailed in the fact that this being developed as a more “games service” kind of game that evolves over time. The fact that the game is very polished in its current “early access” state gives me hope about rare and what they plan to add to this game later on. That’s why I got this on my gamepass trial and it’s a total blast this way.
Won’t renew it but will do so once the game has enough content later down the linez

This is definitely one of those games where it’s much more fun playing with friends. If you’re solo dolo you’re at a massive disadvantage. I think adding servers where there are only sloops or only galleons would help the matchmaking problem they were discussing. That being said, I do however think the game is much more rewarding and interesting when playing with a crew. With this being such a casual open world game( if you will) it doesn’t really cater to the casual player.

17:35 yes you go out there to interact with other players but as Adam said he can't do anything with them. The only interaction between him and the other players is killing each other or downing their ship.
Also for a game which relies on the multiplayer format to only have 24 ships on a map of this scale is just plain stupid because the player interaction gets limited and that leaves you with just going to an island and killing a skeleton or getting a chest.

So I think you guys need to play a little more to see some of the other features involved simply because I don't think you've been exposed to them. The skulls in the sky are raids taking place that have this wave of enemies feel to earn massive amounts of loot and I think the cooperation you were talking about around 33:00 is present there. I have rolled up with other ships where we agreed to work together and split the loot and at the same time fought off many ships at once while protecting the loot for myself (and my crew) it's been actually quite fun trying to wheel and deal with people and knowing when you have the power to be cutthroat and try to take everything. I think you guys are summing up the game before it shows you everything, which admittedly you wouldn't know because there is a lack of explanation to what you can do. I think they had a minecraft approach to how you learned but they didn't realize minecraft released after millions were already familiar with the gameplay and mechanics. Either way, I think you guys should keep playing because I think you'll enjoy it as you learn more about it.

Honestly from the betas and the fact that Microsoft finally gave Rare some potential to make an actual game again it should have been somewhat more obvious that Microsoft was going to usher Rare into follow it's new found love for the Games as a Service model (see Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass and The Fact MS prefers to track monthly users over console sales). It's much more profitable to have one product and sustain it for as long as you can especially when 3 months down the line it's going to have MTX and it's first "big update". So with these intentions of post-launch support in the open and Rare stating it's an evolving game that will grow before launch it's no surprise it's bare bones.
They both knew this hence the decision to put it on Game Pass, if it's a constantly evolving game might as well have a subscription etc. Should have been obvious to PC gamers more so too every Steam Early Access title says more content on the way you know it's thin on the ground. So sure there was a bamboozle there and they don't make it explicitly clear that it is getting all this support.
But it's clear that Rare put all their chips on the best thing to focus on. Minus a few server side hiccups the game is polished more than the banisters of Buckingham Palace. The technical detail from the shared world experience of sailing a ship with friends/strangers to the water and it's waves and storms, it's extremely robust.
It is a little disheartening for those that played the beta hoping for more sure. The argument of the endgame yet to be discovered keeps people wondering what else could be hidden in the game too but will probably just amount to an outfit and sail will let people down. But it is extremely fun, if you enjoyed the beta and are okay with what was in it, you'll enjoy the main game and all it's shenanigans and how every encounter could be miles different from the last one. If not, you can wait.
I have great faith in Rare and it's hard to say that these days about devs after things like failed kickstarters, crappy Early Access that never gets released, Loot Box overindulgence and just buggy games. But Rare have proved they got the know how to make games, they're an esteemed company and already within just a week they've already communicated more about their game, it's issues and plans with the community 100x more than Bungie has with Destiny 2.
It's not a game for everyone right now because it doesn't have enough content sure, but it'll get there but otherwise if people like fun online engaging experiences with friends and strangers it's worth it.
EDIT: Just watching through now, a note on what James said, they've said all future updates expansions etc will be free, but they will have cosmetic based MTX down the line cause businesses gotta business.

    • @irezz05

Statera Meh, I bought it. I believe that in the end it will absolutely be worth 60. Considering all content from here on out is suppose to be free. Saying you'll never charge for DLC content, then charging for content is a game killer. I don't think this is a toss to the winds type of game for the two companies. They want and need it to be a flagship. I've still yet to come across a game with a more beautiful foundation.

I don't believe the Skull Fort to be a 'common enemy'
I would say it CAN be. But more often than not, people fight over who gets the skull fort. I would like to see some undead pirate legend in a co-op zone where pirates aren't encouraged to fight each other. Whether the encouragement comes from no pvp, or just law enforcers being able to step in against the law breakers, some large group quests that needs a fleet of ships to pull off.

I would love it if you could actually have some sort of progression in Sea of Thieves that reflects the decision you make and the path you decide to take. Like for example if you go around killing lots of people and dominate the seas your ship turned more black pearly, ghost piraty. So if you see a ship with black sails and evil looking crew you know they mean trouble. Or if you are more of a merchant vessel your wealth could be displayed and you could signal that you just want to trade. Maybe you have valuable items that can be unlocked through the merchant path.
That would also work for the emergent story type of feeling they seem to go for. So you could write your own story while interacting with other players but also develope your style while progressing on different gameplay paths.

Sea of Thieves is the latest in what I like to refer to as "Streamer Games" which are essentially games that the developers fully intended to release with a business model that the game is going to be a lot of fun to watch RUclips/Twitch personalities that are charismatic and tell good stories play. People see how much fun it looks like their favorite streamers are having playing it not realising that it's those streamers job/source of income to make games seem as fun as possible/to seem like they're having as much fun as possible playing them and making big stories out of them that the average player will never have a chance to replicate. Those viewers go on to pay full price for the game hoping for/expecting to have the same types of artificial experiences they watched streamers having and since they're not playing in a wholly artificial/mostly staged environment it's almost impossible for them to ever have that type of experience, but it's too late by then since they've already spent the money. It's a fairly scummy business model in my opinoin that largely targets minors and I don't think it will be terribly long before the phenomenon occurs enough for people to take real notice of it and start to understand/fight against it. For now though, tons of easy money to be made off suckers!
