This holiday season, restaurants will be working super hard. Your server will likely be tired, and exhausted from working all day. Please consider tipping them! :)
As someone whose family worked extensively in the service industry, this video meant a lot to me so I hope you guys enjoy it!

I always tip around 20% regardless if service is good or bad… it’s pretty much mandatory at this point in America.. wish tipping culture in America would go away… we are the only place in the world with it… restaurants should just charge more and get rid of tipping culture all together.
To give a tip is not usually in many European countries. Mostly the staff has higher income as in America. Just 10% is in my opinion to less... If I eat outside and the service is well, I give around 15-20% top and on top, if the food is excellent, I request the chef to inform in person and give 10€. Not only during last 2 years since covid19 pandemic is worldwide, most of the restaurants struggle. Bless that it's going now up and the situation is better as 2019!!!

This video just shows you the kindness, modesty and humility of servers at Chinese restaurants. If you left $50-100+ tip at a Western restaurant, they'll be grateful sure, but they won't chase you outside the restaurant to see that it's a mistake or ask you why you left so much. It's also sad to see this because it also means that Chinese restaurant servers almost never get tipped well, and certainly never in an amount that would seem generous, which is why they all assumed these tips were a mistake. Kudos to the last guy, he legit asked Sheldon, whom he thought was just a random student and not knowing they're together, to go find Mike and Edward, as if that'll be somehow possible.

I am white, and I honestly can’t believe people would even consider tipping less at a Chinese restaurant. Chinese restaurant employees are some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met. At Chinese/Asian restaurants, I tip the same as anywhere else, if not more, because they’re always so kind and polite.

Appreciate you tipping according to the service you received! I used to work at a Chinese restaurant in Alabama, and my white coworkers would tell us how many of the regulars in our restaurant tip more at other restaurants that they work/worked at (same price range). I also saw how customers tipped differently, depending on the race of the server, instead of service (white servers tipped the most, Asians the least). Mind blowing.

Finally someone's talking about this mess tip payment. Chinese people do not have the tip-culture so they won't ask you for tipping yet still provides their best services. While you are visiting China, you can just pay for what you eat, which is totally fine 'cause they get paid from their boss. In america, however, tips is the major part of their salaries. So, plz, remember to tip, fairly, even though they don't comprehend this culture.
you are exactly right, why people think Chinese restaurant tips less cuz of their culture like you said in china or any Asia country, they got pay more of what they work for and not rely on tips, but here in America Chinese restaurant servers are are just like all other America/japan restaurant, their salary are base of tips too.. so be fair, just tips base of their services but not what type of restaurant :))))

@@angrycheese42 if you cant speak the language then you cant interact well and form a bond and understanding on what the customer wants is what I'm trying to say. there's nothing wrong with the service but its just that service. 9 times out of 10 your not going to get friendly service at a chinese resturant compared to a westernized restaurant. unless ofcourse you speak the language(chinese) or they can speak english slightly.

The fact that the uncle said that his customers don’t make money so easily really reflects back to how Asians are such sympathetic people… you can tell he doesn’t treat his customers as strangers but neighbours under his care… I’m currently a waiter at a Thai restaurant… my boss said his workers are his family and he calls me son, it’s the little things which make Asian restaurants so warm… I’ve eaten at some western restaurants although the service is good aswell it’s not the same feeling… the relationship I get from them is more business like rather than friends sharing one building
Thanks for bringing awareness to this. I used to do the 10% standard tip at Chinese restaurants, simply because that's what I was taught to do by my parents and relatives. I used to think you have to tip more in a Western restaurant because their "service" was supposedly better but now reflecting on it, Chinese Restaurants actually have pretty stellar customer service. Sure, you don't get the small talk and the "how are you enjoying your food" check up like you would at a Western restaurant but man when you ask for a refill on your beverage/tea or ask them to follow up with the kitchen on your order, they actually go do it immediately. In a Chinese Restaurant, the whole staff is attentive to your requests when you flag them down with your hand (even the manager or owner). Whereas in a Western Restaurant, you have to wait for your specific server. If anything, my experience with Western restaurants have been hit & misses. There are actually many instances where I would encounter entitled servers at a Western restaurant who provide little/no service and feel like they deserve a 18-20% tip.
Some of these western restaurants are rather annoying when server comes by every ten minutes asking how I am doing. Just once during the meal is enough. Now if they voluntarily offer more bread and such sure I'll tip them more...
But I don't get it, is tipping 10% that low? I thought it was the standard for every single restaurant regardless of if it's Chinese, Italian, or some other.
@@arcturus4762 for us servers, pur wages are basically ass.. we got our money of tips, seeing a $2 tips are usually heartbreaking for me. Some don’t even tip, most of the time I wanted to go after them and says, “Was my service that bad that you don’t even tip? Do you think I work for free?” But y’know.. there’s nothing to be done.
@@Ultearss sometimes tipping badly is also due to the quality of the food. If the food is bad, and you continue to work there, well lets just say neither you nor the kitchen staff or the owner will stay in business long. I know restaurant biz has lots of competition, and profit margins are low. but people have many choices. People sometimes will keep going to a place, simply for sentimental value, even if the food and service sucks, but those are rare customers.
@@Ultearss Personally, I've heard some people say we should tip 15% or even 20% of the bill, which I don't understand. The prices of everything rises, but then the percentage also goes up? If I'm expected to tip 20%, I'd just rather not go to that place, and cook myself.
In Sydney our Chinatown has been very hard hit as a result of Australia’s border closures and lockdowns during covid. Even restaurants that have been there for 30 years have closed due to the financial hardship. Good on you guys! These old Asian aunties and uncles need tips too. 😭

@@MegaHuichen We do. But usually only where there is good service, and not the 20% in US. It’s because in Australia there is a minimum wage required. The hospitality minimum wage is now about $19.49 per hour.

Tipping isn’t compulsory in australia because we already factor in tax and generally it’s not expected. At super fancy restaurants I will tip.

As a mainland Chinese we never tip restaurants as a matter of fact no one knows what the concept of tipping is so they would think you left the money on accident

因为工作关系接触到好几个华人小餐厅老板，而且也比较清楚他们的经营状况。那些中年唐餐老板们大多英文都不太行，每次我有去到帮他们填表，或者是政府寄了什么信帮他们解释一下，他们都是连声道谢的那种。有一家餐厅因为离公司很近所以有什么事我都直接过去问老板，老板每次都送可乐，然后有时候说给个打包盒你去厨房想吃什么自己装，都是刚做好的。虽然我也只是在正常工作时间做我自己份内的事情，但是可能对他们来说，有个讲中文的人愿意帮助他们就是让他们觉得非常满足的事情。虽然我来加拿大也不久，英文也还很烂，但是在加拿大这个小地方作为少之又少的华人之一，我的工作能帮助到华人们在这里生存，也是我觉得能为我的community做点事情的机会吧。

So true. I'm Korean and my mom is a nail tech. I worked at her store and I got to experience the low to no tips from customers. It's sad because the labor that goes in to doing someone's feet, hands, wax, etc. I really enjoyed this video. It's so nice to see such compassion and love 💖

I'll be honest, I'm not a very good tipper, and seeing this video, I really wish I could go back to all the times where I've left less than stellar tips and just give more. You guys should do some sort of fundraiser where we can go to donate money and you guys can take the sum and spread it across restaurants, I'd be glad to donate.

I think you should just tip what you can afford. Not everyone is rich and everyone deserve a nice meal. I can never afford the 20% since everything so expensive in CA. I just tip $2-$5 depending on how much stuff I buy. Like 2 tray =$2, 2 tray plus drink = $3 regardless of the price total. It not like I am ordering 10 tray of food and tipping $2. I usually just get 1-2 item and my order is simple. Unless you have some crazy order, just tip what you can.

Yfrumes, thanks for your conscious awareness. I think to not overwhelm a lot of people, a 10% tip at every restaurant would be acceptable. If everyone eating paid 10% no matter what, the workers will win out in the end and the customers will not be overwhelmed or nervous about tipping
This also kinda brings another sad point, at least in my experience of working in a Vietnamese or Chinese restaurant in Sydney. They usually pay their own people $10/hr, which is half the legal minimum wage in Australia. On top of that, the employees are usually forced to do multiple things at once, such as washing dishes, kitchen prep, kitchen hand, spend extra hours for busy nights or help renovate the shop at the end of a shift.
And if the employers are in need of staff, they will hire a non-Asian person, and immediately pay them more than the experienced workers, and have them only do customer service. Its really depressing that international students here in Sydney are taken advantage of like that, despite success of the business.
This is what isn't mentioned this happens in the US as well they pay their employees what they want.

I think a lot of the time it has to do with cultural humility, like in chinese houses we rarely ever explicitly say "I love you" and if I have a good day i'll generally say the translation of it went ok rather than actually saying it went really well, and it's kinda been established in the culture to be humble and not accept all the gifts you get when you first get them and some foreigners may misinterpret that as them not wanting the tips because they don't understand the cultural norms

Yea same thing in a lot of middle eastern country's like the one I'm from we don't have a word for love we just say I like you instead we also generally don't accept gifts unless you are insanely persistent.

people said that chinese people wouldnt appreciate a normal tip, but this video proves that they appreciate it so much more. servers at american restaurants always feel entitled to a big tip, no matter the final bill. because of stereotypes and stigmas, chinese restaurants never have had to feel that way; so much so that they will chase after you to give back the extra money that was left.

People need to realize that working for most Asian restaurants which have below minimum wage, no vacation date, no health benefit, and no holiday pay. So, you need to be more generous on Asian waiters cuz, they actually really depend on your tips. The worst part is, sometime the owner also keep the tips.

It breaks my heart that these poor Chinese restaurants are getting less than the standard 15% tip compared to American restaurants. That's awful and so unfair!!! We usually do the standard 15% and if their service is great, hubby and I give 20%.

Being a native Korean, having experience living in the US, seeing things that will bring unity as well as easy accessible and except able is so wonderful and makes helps build a better understanding of Chinese living in the North American region.
I would like to make 2 requests if possible.
1. Please find ways to reach out to the Chinese that are in Asia especially to the ones who don’t speak English too.
2.One of the biggest obstacles in Eastern Asia is that there is not so many things that do the role of a bridge to unite neighboring cultures like China, Japan and Korea. But, more and more people are trying different things to build friendships among people in close regions.
Just want to say again that you guys are great! Your family and friends have wonderful vibes!

Guys this is incredible, you are such great ambassadors for Chinese Canadians. I went to UTSG and lived near dt for 8 years so I hang around Spadina Chinatown a lot back in the day. New Ho King, House of Gourmet, Rol San, 富来小厨 and countless others are absolute top notch establishments. In 2021 I went back to visit and spadina Chinatown looked really sad, wish the best for all the hard working restaurants and servers. I will be tipping 20% from now on 💶

I tip more at Chinese restaurants. they are less expensive, but the waiter works as hard. the same percentage as higher prices restaurants isn't fair. I also wish tipping could be replaced with regular wages. tipping is degrading.
What a beautiful video! I didn't know that there's a difference in tipping culture depending on what restaurant you're eating in (because in Germany we don't have a tipping culture in this amount at all - mostly you just round up your bill to a nice amount, but that's the same for every place not only european or western restaurants) I got really really emotional because all of the waiters and waitresses immediately wanted to give back the money - really, thank you for doing this!
Yeah, it looks like this video is in Canada but I'm from the US and servers can be paid as low as $2.13 per hour. They’re expected to make up the wage through tips. Personally I think this is a terrible system because it often leaves them severely underpaid. That’s what makes it especially bad that servers at Asian restaurants get tipped less. How can they make up a higher wage then? But this is why tipping is such a big deal here... they basically rely on it to get by.
EDIT: I googled it quickly and learned that Canadian servers recently got updated to have equal minimum wage now, which is great! But it's still unfair that Asian restaurants would be tipped less ofc, so they're doing good out there. Also made me realize that holy shit, America is even worse than I thought...

I'm from the US and I've never ever heard of anyone tipping them differently. Most people here do tip generously and many waitresses are actually paid much more with tips than they would be other wise.
The tipping situation in the US will always be extremely weird to me .. Idk how it's legal to make 50 % of their wage tip based.. in Europe tips are just extra it's not part of your wage and that's how it should be in my opinion .

For me....someone that has worked in restaurants for longer than I care to say......I did not realize that tipping is normally a lot less at a Chinese restaurant because as a longtime restaurant worker for years, I typically tip at least 20% or more but it is so wonderful that you guys identified this and addressed it. And yes it really is appreciated. Thank you guys 😊
The idea of good service is just different in Chinese restaurants. Servers are not assigned to a table, so customers tip based on the average service. And outlier tip would almost always be a mistake. This also means that the service is much more consistent, as a customer can call on any wait staff for help. (note this is for traditional Chinese restaurants.)

Once my parents tipped $100 for a $10 haircut. We became the place’s ‘best customer’, and every time we went back to that place we were welcomed.
In Australia, tipping is such a foreign concept, let alone in Asian restaurants. I don't know if in America, restaurants don't have a pay per hour system and the workers rely on tips, but in Australia, no one actually tips. Some places have donation boxes but those are for charities, and if you do leave a tip, a large majority of workers will try to give it back or humbly take it.

The chinese people I met are amongst the best people I know... Sometimes, language is a barrier, especially with the Chinese languages that are soooo far from the western tongues. But if you take the time to understand each other, you will discover amazing people

Chinese were not used to the culture of tipping when they first came to the west, and then they were taken advantage of, eventually after so many years they became the “the weirdos that do not deserve tips” and people give funny reasons like “they do not appreciate the kindness from customers”. I hate tipping culture so much. It’s basically like hey you just paid for this meal, but not for the service so you decide whether or not the guy who serves you eats tonight. I’m very glad tipping culture doesn’t exist in Australia and servers are able to get fair pay.

This shit is why I hate tipping. You get lousy service at an expensive restaurant, and you're expected to tip $20 dollars. The waitress did jack shit except serve you the amazing food the chef made. I'm not here for her, I'm here for the chef's expertise. But then go to an Ethiopian or Thai place, get incredible service, and you're only expected to tip $5.

Usually in chinese restaurants, the tips are so low and understand appreciated that... Workers feel weird being tipped...
Honestly it really depens, I am not American but when I go to Chinese restaurants they usually talk to you really loud and with an accent that I can't really understand (Chinese speaking Italian). I'm pretty scared of them also hahahaha, but still they hard working and I really appreciate that

I've literally never heard anyone say that before about tipping certain ethnicities. Tipping all together should be abolished and they should just pay them a little bit more.

Just because you haven't heard it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You've now seen a video, and you've gotten several accounts from actual servers. Note that this is in Canada, though. You may be from somewhere else. In America, I think the big tip difference in the Chinese food conversation is buffet versus normal dining.
I don't think tipping should be abolished but yeah they should pay a lot more to the people that work for them.
me neither, but tipping at a buffet is a little different because you're getting yourself the food. sort of half way between fast food and full service dining. any more I get buffet to go, it works out cheaper that way and I give myself the tips for "delivery" 🤣

My mom only ever gives 10% and I literally have to fight her to give more when we go out to eat. She gets mad and says that it's adequate pay but it's really not and I wish I could help her understand just how underpaid a lot of these staff are.

They are not not appreciating, they just be straight and honest. They believe the business owner should pay the employees, but not the customers. The customers pay their bills, that's all they are obliged to pay.
In Asia, we don't normally tip because the staff actually get paid. We expect our bill to be the actual amount of money we pay. I don't understand why a culture of underpaying staff and extorting customers of hidden fees should be considered ideal.

Thank you for sharing this video. As someone from mainland China, my parents aren’t very generous tippers since Chinese people are pretty stingy with money. I’ve always had a heart a give now that I have some income, but my old tipping habits remain the way they were when my parents taught me to tip around 10% instead of 15%, especially at Chinese restaurants. Especially with the pandemic, I think it’s taught me to be more generous and kind to others, even to put other’s needs above my own. I’ll be tipping much more generously at all restaurants, especially at Chinese ones in the future. I hope you continue to find success in your videos, they are really meaningful. 谢谢🙏
My former in-laws were Chinese and were very stingy with tips. I used to put a good tip (an estimated 20-25%) under the plate when they were paying. I was felt so good doing it, it was the best money I ever spent.
Maybe they are a bit stingy but mainly I guess they are just not used to tipping since there's no tipping culture in China. I suppose people just felt imposed to give more money thus are reluctant

i tipped 18% at a dim sum restaurant and they were so thankful. This was precovid and 18% is pretty standard... they gave me a VIP card. This definitely opened my eyes.

They gave you a VIP card becuse guess what? 80% of their customer base do not tip. You were a special one.
This is why I propose a 10% enforceable tipping system. It’s not high enough to hurt customer wallet and balanced enough that customers continue to return thereby workers getting more tips in the long run

I think the problem is some owners don’t give the tip to servers at Chinese restaurants.
In America we have to pay our servers and the restaurant. Tipping is supposed to be based on "service" but American restaurants like to pay 1.25 an hour to servers so they HAVE to live off tips. We should be giving tips because we want to, not HAVE to.

6:19 - 6:41 This minute gives me flashbacks to back in China with all of our relatives and friends when we finishd eating in a resturant, and my grandma always insisted to be the one to take the check, and then each and everyone argues and tries to take it instead, and it leads to an argument about not wanting to trouble the other out of politeness😂
Or when she insisted to pay for the gas when her son-in-law's father gave us a ride
Or when a relative gave me a red envelope of money when I was a kid, and my Ma insisted for them to take it back

For me it was my grandpa. He always paid the bill, and my uncles rarely got into the traditional polite bill fights with him because he laid down the law early: the only time someone else can pay the bill is when he's dead.
