Logan would NEVER give an ultimatum like this, especially when he was so understanding throughout their whole relationship (he was also adamant on factoring each other in). I think the writers had it in their head that at the end of the show, Rory should be portrayed as having every door in her a life wide open, and they made up this poor scene to achieve that. It was from this point that the writers of Gilmore girls seem to lose their touch, heavily seen in "A year in the life".

And ofc Rory didn't say yes, but I don't think that's a reflection of her love for him. She just graduated. She was excited for the future. Obviously she didn't want to get married right away, it's very understandable.

Actually after season six the original writers got fired and new writers were hired for season 7. A year in the life had the original writers once again, which makes the terrible writing even more confusing.

    • @layasusan924
      @layasusan924 Год назад

@Veril Bijou Ah it makes sense now. Season 7 was the worst of the original seasons, but ofc it was cuz i think it's a near impossible task to have new writers come in and continue a 6 season show.
But wow, if 'A year in the life' was written by the original writers, they could've done so much better!! They showed such talent in the first 6 seasons.

I am late to the party but I was in the very same situation as Rory when I was 20 and at that moment it was just impossible to think to be so far away from everyone I know, from the usual things, to be somewhat depended and financially rather insecure, and he was way older than me… So I turned the proposal down. I still have the ring 10 years later and yes it breaks my heart to this day because I have loved that person for all this time. So, I would kind of recommend to people to at least try unless you are financially really vulnerable (like I have been but I think it would have been okay)… In this show though Logan was the one who had more options than her, New York has many businesses to choose from for what he was doing, big Newspapers on the other hand are rare. Also he said earlier he would perhaps move to her and put her in his equation, giving an ultimatum to marriage is not, let alone doing this on your graduation day.

Logan was always there for Rory. When Richard was in the hospital he was there, when Rory wanted to steal a boat he was there, when Pairs threw her out he was there etc. He practically paid for her rent when he went away. Logan would never ask Rory to give up her dreams and goals so I don't see why she didn't say yes. She seemed like she was warming up to saying yes but I think Lorelia got in her head. She didn't tell her what to do but you could read her face and see that she didn't want Rory to get married.Rory was ready to get married.

I see people commenting here that Rory made a mistake, Logan was perfect and everything, but what you don't want to accept is that a person can be amazing for you, but still you have some doubts. Marriage it's a huge important step, if you're not at least 98% sure you shouldn't say yes just because it feels like the right choice, just because the guy it's incredible for you, it's selfish if you're not completely into that decision and accepts only because the other person wants you to.
And about A Year in a Life, I love that the writers created a mess in Rory's life, because it's so authentic and real, people are not perfect, you can be totally lost in your 20's, 30's, 40's, make bad decisions, feel like an outcast. Sometimes we just don't know what to do and unfortunatelly there's no manual that we can follow, specially when everyone around you looks successful and happy. She is changed and she is trying.

I also liked the revival. I'm reading the comments and I just can't believe people defending Rory should have married Logan to be a successful journalist (WTF?) People, in the revival the Rory's problem is not lack of talent. Rory is entitled and acts like a spoiled brat. Journalism is in crisis since 2008 and her beloved NY Times is laying people off for years. What Rory did with Sandee Says is probably the reason she is struggling. She thinks small newsrooms are beneath her (UGH!!!). This is a capital sin in the field. I'm a jornalist myself and cringed at that scene. So, no, getting married here is not the answer to her problems. She needs a reality check and to grow up. The revival is screaming this message. Especially when she finally said goodbye to The Life and Death Brigade.

A friend broke off an engagement at Rory's age because she was convinced it was too early to get married. He said he didn't want to wait another two years until she finishes her MA, so she gave him the ring back. It happens, even if people thought they loved each other.
BUT, being one of her best friends, I saw them slowly drifting apart over the last months, lowkey fighting about the whole wedding thing, the conversations getting gloomier and gloomier, the tension between them, and finally the fight and a teary break-up, like, almost a whole weekend of her non-stop crying, despite being the one who made the decision. And they hadn't even moved in together, just two years of dating and getting to know each other.
As for Rory and Logan, I just didn't see it coming. It was so sudden and out of character for them both. I don't know what the writers were trying to achieve but irl people do not break up as easily as declining another serving of a meal. Especially after three years together, including one and a half in one apartament. I would believe it if it was fully fleshed-out, if there was something else except that job (which was shitty comparing to what she would've have on her hands if she'd become one of THE Huntzbergers).

idk why people are so upset about Rory saying no. She has the right, no matter what. Logan didn't discuss this with her before asking, he didn't really ask for what she wanted, or needed. When he proposed, he talked about how she can work near him. He already planned out her life for her. It's what his family does. If Rory had married Logan, she would become like Emily, a rich housewife. And even if she advance her career, it'll always be his family who is attached to her. She said no here because she clearly is not ready. Her mom raised her to be herself and make her own life. She can make mistakes and regrets them but it will still be her life. She did later on still see Logan. But she herself seem free. Free from Logan's family and their expectations. She clearly loves him still, but ultimately he and her are not right for each other. If they were, Logan wouldn't have engaged and married someone else. His goal is to make his family happy. Him marrying Rory would not make her happy. It probably would have ruined their love. Rory's best love is herself. And now, she'll love her child. and it is what Lorelai has decided for herself before as well. One day, Rory would meet someone who just feels right. And even if Logan was her soulmate, he ultimately is just not right for her.

He initially wanted her to make up her mind about her career and do what she wanted, with him following her. I hate to say it, but here it goes. Seeing how she struggled with the job hunt and all that she had gone through while he was acting lazy and irresponsible, I think she should have ignored Logan and took the Providence position while she had the opportunity. She instead ended up in Iowa, in the middle of nowhere, far away from her family.

I understand why a lot of people are really sad about Rory’s decision. I’m team Jess and even I can admit that Logan was probably Rory’s best boyfriend. However, I don’t really look at the breakup scene as completely devastating. Instead, I kind of see it as bitter sweet. Because while it is kind of sad to see Rory let Logan go it’s also good to see her make her dreams a priority as well. We also have to remember that she was only 22 years old. She was a 22-year-old who was fresh out of college and was just about to start working the first professional job of her career. She even had to admit that the possibilities for the life she could create seemed intimidating at first but they were also exciting. Marriage would have limited all of those possibilities. I know Logan was probably thinking with his heart and he thought that she can work anywhere so why not get married now. But it’s not always that simple. When you’re married you no longer make decisions just for yourself you make decisions for yourself and your spouse. And a lot of those decisions require sacrifice and compromise. Going straight from being a college student to a wife is a huge leap that she just wasn’t ready. Overall, I think she made the right choice. I know she made some bad choices in the revival series lol but all that aside I think given where she was in her life at that point I think she made the right choice. It may not have been a super romantic cheesy ending to the series but it was still satisfying to me at least.

The hesitation part of Rory to Logan's proposal says something about Rory's feelings for Logan. She loves him but not enough to take that jump with him, so to speak. It's strange, but there it is. I think it was hinted a couple of times in the show of how different they are at times, though it wasn't emphasized enough like when she poked fun at rich kids in her article. That came from her heart without thinking. She may say she doesn't mean it, but why put thought into it and write it out that way? It calls to mind Jess' words to her how she's not being her true self since when they were teens they used to make fun of the rich. Also, it seems Rory really wants her mom to approve of him first. Her opinion really means the world to her still.

Liz17 ... she´s 22 vor heavens sake ... most people can´t commit to a town or city they wanna live in let alone getting married ... Logan´s been a selfish idiot to put that amount of presure on her, if he´d talked about things and let her make this decision in her own time the result may have been different! Which only points out again that both of them were not ready to get married ...!

docstef MD I agree..but there are some who got married younger than that, are mature, and are still together and still in love ..not all cases, of course, but there are exceptions..independence and freedom are other factors that Rory was considering too ..I'm not saying she didn't love him ..she clearly did, or does in canon, but her love for him isn't strong enough to overcome her fears whatever they may be...in the Revival, that's ample time for them to be decisive about their love & commitment to each other..but its not the case for either.

The thing is ASP, the Gilmore Girls creator (from the grapevine, anyway), didn't even watch season 7 since it wasn't her "creation". Basically, it's as if the storyline in s.7 was never there. No proposal, no San Francisco gig for Logan at all. He lives in London doing the family business while Rory is still trying to be a journalist and we all know is a tough business to get in. They are seeing other people 'cause they are in different continents, not just East coast/West coast. The fact is they do love each other deeply so if the "gods" will allow, they will be endgame💕

@@Lucel18 In the revival, people are romanticizing their relationship but I think Logan was just a escape for Rory. She never asks him to leave Odette. She gets mad when Odette moved in because she lost the place she used to go to hide from the problems of her life. For me, Rory knew her plans were crashing and Logan cushioned the fall. Of course they have history and care for each other. But there was something odd in the whole thing. This is why it was so important when she told him "every ride has to end". It was time to grow up and face the real life and all the mess in her life.

After seeing these videos for too many times I've finally seen Rory's logic and I kind of understand her now. I mean, I'm a very devoted Team Logan fan and I think he is great in general and Rory's best boyfriend in particular, but she said no, because she had her own career dreams and yes, she loved him and she probably knew he was the one, but at the age when all doors are open and you can choose your own future, everyone wants to see their chances on successful fulfilment of their dreams. Usually I don't get it in movies, but maybe they should have really met later in life, when everything is somehow figured out. Now I just really would like to see what happened to Rory during these 7 years that her life became soo fucked up! Hope they could be with Logan now, when they have this baby (I'm sure it's his, because he is the one for her and fate just gave them a second chance:)

    • @hannesmonsees9101
      @hannesmonsees9101 5 лет назад +22

See, that's the point that I really don't get. Yes, all the doors in her life are open, but she's acting like marrying Logan would shut those doors forever. That's simply not the case. She even applied to the SF Chronicle before Logan proposed. Why did she never pursue that? I think she had two main reasons for turning him down both of which are equally stupid. 1: She picked her career over her boyfriend and 2: She is generally afraid of commitment.
Career is important, yes. And being without a job and living a life like Emily sucks. But she acts like there are no jobs in SF and wherever Logan and her would and could have lived. At some point Logan will take over the family business, after all he is still heir to Mitchum (or however his name is spelled). And when that happens they are most likely gonna live in NYC and she could have worked at the Times (which would than be owned by her husband). Rory did not understand that choosing her boyfriend would not mean an end to her career. On the contrary, again he is heir to one of the biggest media empires in the States which could come in quite handy when looking for a job in the media industry. Instead she chose her career over her boyfriend and - as we later learn - ends up with neither of them, quite bittersweet. To be honest I would have enjoyed seing somebody make that stupid decision if I wasn't invested in this person so much because I spent seven seasons watching her grow up. This was probably one of the biggest mistakes that Rory made so far in her life and most likely in her entire life.

@@hannesmonsees9101 she's always torn with the choices she makes... Dean or Jess? Harvard or Yale? Jumping off the ledge and dating Logan was risky. She wants the Providence job, but then it's not good enough. Lorelai was wrong when she said Rory's not a gambler... she takes risks in her personal life by making risky choices. Jess was a bad, risky choice, Yale was a presumably good choice, Dating Logan worked pretty well for 3 years despite their ups and downs, not taking Providence was a bad choice.... But then, she's just entitled enough, or perhaps sheltered enough, to think that her choices will all work out if she picks it. She thought if she PICKS career-chasing in New York, it will happen. She passes the good opportunities in front of her that can lead to better opportunities later in the hope of something better NOW. But the thing is it's fine when you're picking between schools or jobs or even figuring out which boyfriend to date in highschool. But when you love someone and the only thing keeping you from marriage is a specific, but non-existent, prospect in a career field that you could that you could have pursued any way? She wasn't willing to make some smaller sacrifices. She wasn't willing to see that she wasn't the most important college grad. She gambled and made the wrong choice. But you don't gamble with someone's heart when you love them.

At that stage I thought that the right guy for her was no guy, and she was only 22 years old - who cares if a 22 year old is single and is prioritising their career when they’re just out of college. I think people forget that a few episodes ago, logan told her not to factor him in when she made a decision about her job and that they would make it work no matter where she landed. Then he turns around and doesn't just propose marriage but lumps moving to California and limiting her job options in with it. She wouldn't just be agreeing to marriage. She would be sacrificing all of her prospects to accommodate him, when he offered her zero flexibility about his job and made the final decision without even consulting her. He made his job a non-negotiable definite while making moving across the country a condition to them staying together. That's not exactly a great start to a marriage and I understand why she said no. The fact that she made a lot of mistakes in her life after is irrelevant because a) she didn't know that would happen when she made her decision and b) at least she got to CHOOSE.

She would have always been the happiest with Logan and by refusing him she set herself up for failure. She could have been a journalist in SF, she could have continued living as selfishly as she wanted, Logan never tied her up and chained her up inside the home. She denied herself clearly the thing she wanted most, especially since she was willing to carry on an affair with him when he was engaged to someone else and she was dating poor Paul. When he says what is the point,,, makes you think where was all that love. the point is that you get to keep the person you love and enjoy being with and you would rather pass that up cause she is not ready to commit but would commit to be with you either way. how sad!!

Everyone is talking about Rory making the wrong decision, but for me Logan was the one that didn't make any sense. The all or nothing approach is ridiculous and it doesn't make sense with their story and with the man Logan was turning out to be. I am Team Logan and hate this scene. (Ps: but I loooove all of your playlist so much)

I'm rewatching from the beginning and knowing this is what comes has cast this cloud over it all. I go from enjoying Rory the most and rooting for this girl to come out of this messy environment to make Emily and Richard proud of their family, their granddaughter, and then daughter for raising this epic cool genius kid. To seeing her bratty and spoiled. And mixed up between two words, that of privilege and that of being judgmental of privilege, she never takes responsibility and never really grows up into the person you imagine her to be when you watch from the start. Logan grew into her perfect partner. He was bratty and spoiled too, but he was there..he wanted to be there. Rory copies lorelai in not sticking with her Christopher, but logan wasn't Christopher and Rory isn't lorelai and it is a disappointing ending. If this had ended with a yes.. You wouldn't have needed the revival. This left so many loose ends.

They gave up so quickly. They were not ready to married because logan got the job but rory hasnt a job. Rory hadn't set it up yet but they were should try to be together. They were should fight for eachother. Then in the 'a year in the life' they screwed up.

I hate that Rory seems to be a taker let people fall in love with her claiming she wants commitment and when they get to the point she turns her attention to someone else or she's not committed. She is selfish and wants what she's not willing to give both her and lorolie are that way, don't want to commit to the guy they have. They always want the guy they don't have when they get that guy they want the one they didn't want or had before. This is irritating.

I despise the last two scenes with Logan because I don't think it's realistic for a couple who spent three years together to end thier relationship so suddenly by talking about it at 1. Her grandparents house in the midst of a party and 2. Public grounds of Yale. It just seemed like they both placed so little weight on finding a reasonable compromise to stay together when they've fought and compromised to stay in a long distance relathionship for the last two years of thier three year relationship.

After saying no there was no way he was gonna take her as serious again (it was all or nothing)... even in the revival the fact they even still communicated shows how much he still loved her... where they were 10 yrs later is actually optimistic tbh.

They could have stayed engaged for a while regarding them being so young, and to be fair as a journalist to be she really could have worked anywhere and it still would have been open and unsure and free if she moved to california. I don't understand it, I mean sure she was surprised but they obviously loved each other and letting go so fast and all of a sudden seems really strange and not fitting at all

They ruined both characters. People go through so much worst in life and still end up together after many years. They turned Rory into a lame millennial and Logan into a lowlife asshole. Come on..

Everyone keeps saying this it’s Lorelei’s fault that she said no, and I totally agree that they have co-dependency issues, but I honestly don’t think Rory was ready either way. This whole series she went from being Lorelei’s daughter, to Richard and Emily’s granddaughter, and then she would’ve been Logan’s wife. Girl needed to find her own identity and learn how to be her own person.
Not saying that Logan wouldn’t have allowed her to do that. I wish they would’ve just agreed to go to Cali together and had a long engagement, or even just go together while still dating

Everyone blames Rory for turning him down, but I can’t be the only one who thinks Logan was foolish for giving her an ultimatum. They were in their early twenties. They could have been together without tying the knot just yet.
Still, I think Rory would be better off with him as her partner/husband.
