  • The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.4!
    In this tutorial, we look at where inspiration to build can come from, the importance of research, and how to turn reference material like concept art, urban photography, or illustrations into a Minecraft build!
    My next Survival Guide build will be a floating island based on this illustration by Greg Fromenteau: www.inprnt.com/gallery/gregfr...
    Having stumbled onto this image via instagram, I explore how inspiration can strike in a number of ways - and discuss whether AI art has a place in inspiring Minecraft builders. We also look at straightforward ways to search for art if you have a concept but have trouble visualising it yourself.
    Then we go into a creative flatworld to begin the process of drafting the build - starting by choosing a block palette, a couple of small build tests, identifying the key elements of the build, and building the ship on top of the island.

    Welcome back. I have a personal rule about Minecraft: It's your game, your time, your fun. You do what you do. There is no cheating as long as you are honest about what you do to make your world. There are so many ways to play and alter the game play as needed or desired. Things change a bit if you are competing or playing with other people, but there is still a lot of room for personal choice when you are off the game and deciding how to make your build look the way you want.

      Thanks for this. I always use the teleport and keep inventory cheat in my survival world because I'm not the best at fighting hostile mobs and scare easily when I hear their sounds. Reading this has helped me overcome the lie that I'm not a real Minecraft player just because I can't play without those two cheats.

    Some inspiration on the subject of prismarine: even if one were not going to try replicating the rock hue used in the reference art, a few streaks/blobs of prismarine in the underside of the island could look nice as a visual reason the island is floating. That being, "this color-shifting mineral is doing weird gravity things".
    But, as stated in the video, floating land masses are not uncommon in Minecraft natural world generation anyway, so not everyone will feel the need or want for such a detail.

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  4 месяца назад +33

      I'm actually considering revisiting the prismarine idea for the rock formations on top of the island. Could be kinda cool to build with prismarine / diorite / calcite around the hull, as though the ship is breaching a rocky wave. Something else to test before I commit to it!

      Yep! Sometimes you get lucky and it works out - but if you aren't enjoying the process, there's no reason to set such extreme boundaries. I also feel like the gatekeeping around Survival Minecraft is unreasonable - this is a sandbox game, you can take whatever approach you want as long as you're enjoying it.

      @@Pixlriffs At 29:42 the horizontal part you are making is called "spritsail yard" and you should rotate it 90 degrees so its perpendicular to the rest of the ship.
      Also if you want a middle solution for the ship's masts size you can add trapdoors instead of the "plus shape" you made.
      In another note, the ropes you first added from oak fences in real ships are called "standing rigging" and they are covered by tar so they are protected from the salty environment. you should replace the oak fences either with dark oak or nether brick fences. in the other hand the ropes you added with the grindstone is called "running rigging" because its used from the crew to control the ship so the ropes were constantly sliding (running), you should make them from oak or birch.
      One last thing, the mizzen mast should me the smallest of all, in the screen seems like its equal with the fore mast

    The color shifting of prismarine always reminds me of the shadows of passing ☁️ clouds on a sunny, breezy day. I actually enjoy it.
    Lichen would add a green tint to the rocks during the day, and enough light during night to stop mob spawns. Personally, I think a combination of both would give you a richer palette to work with.

    A word on color, the illustration is keying the green/blue on the sky color. When you go to paint a picture, you integrate the color scheme "all over." What this means is to preserve the spirit of the inspiration piece it’s better to consider the color keys in the biome you are in. It’s kind of like transposing the key in music. The original may be written in a certain key, but you can preserve the original while altering it to suit your situation by transposing the key.
    If you want to maintain the misty watercolor feel of the original, you would consider your biome color scheme and lighten the tone of the colors (hues.) Or if you are more interested in the structure, you can recreate the art in richer colors from the palette of your biome.
    It’s always more satisfying to be inspired by the work of another person rather than copying. Copying can be frustrating and downright boring, whereas being inspired is uplifting and lets you grow. The word "inspire" means ‘to breathe in" and is a good place to begin… breathing in the image and internalizing it before you begin, then seeing the space you are actually in and how the breathe and the reality can come together to realize your own personal vision.
    (Yeah, I’ve been an artist for 50+ years…)

    • @emryspaperart
      @emryspaperart 4 месяца назад +2

      this is a good breakdown! unfortunately, i don't think we have the vanilla biome colours OR the block colours needed to faithfully recreate the original art's colour palette, but in a heavily modded save it'd be fascinating to see the choices that could be made.

    • @Yzyxdolorza
      @Yzyxdolorza 4 месяца назад +4

      @@emryspaperart yes, but what I mean is (and probably didn’t say very well) is that, for example, the sky in the original matches the bare rocks. The sky in MC is very blue. The grass is greener, the rocks grayer. But they can complement each other in similar ways to the original. As if you recapture the original in black and white (and gray) then re-colorized it in MC colors. Integrating it into the whole of the world instead of creating a vignette.
      I’m not criticizing Pixlriff’s work, it’s just something his tutorial inspired me to think and write about: how would I approach this project?

    People who say that you have to do things in survival-only are wrong on multiple levels. *They* may find it more fun/challenging, but to everyone else it's likely not a beneficial approach. I wouldn't even try doing any kind of decorative building at a larger scale, if it wasn't for tests in a creative copy of the world I play on. Figuring out the general shape and the overall material choices means I know what kind of farms I need or which manually-harvested resources I need to concentrate my efforts on.
    Thanks to Creative mode I found a crater-like area in this world, where I decided to put the Nali castle from the old Unreal intro/menu sequence. I hope to eventually make a ReplayMod recreation of that flight sequence in Minecraft, but mostly that's where my storage lives. (And it took some tools to figure out scaling and alignment of all the parts.)

      Agreed! I'm building a fairly huge world for some friends right now and if I had to do it in survival I'd have given up months ago. I've used nearly 2 million oak logs and leaves alone building the custom trees and it's taken me 10 months to finish the main build. When I decide to go play a survival world that'll be different, but I am firmly of the belief that creative mode is a blessing to people who are not good at freehanding.

    Glad to have you back Pix! Hope you had a nice break. At the beginning of the video, you mentioned artists using references & just wanted to add another, perhaps even more relevant example. It's extremely common for Architects to us precedents when starting out on a new project.
    I also wanted to say that the inspiration image is really cool & your build is looking great! One piece of constructive criticism though as you move from creative to survival - I would consider sharpening the taper at the bow of the boat. I understand that it is a conscious decision to remove a lot of the vertical angle as it isn't actually in water & to give the impression of bracing on the underside, but when combined with the relatively "dull" angle from the sides, the bow is looking quite stub-nosed. I would recommend starting the side-to-side taper one section earlier and (maybe two?) and keep it sharper at the very tip. Obviously, I'm just going off of the video and might be off base here as I don't have the benefit of flying around viewing it from multiple angles. Just my two cents. Either way, I'm excited to see the end result!

    The reference image is so different from what I imagined it to be when it was mentioned on the Spawn Chunks. It looks like it could've come from a 19th century novel.
    One note about AI images: I found a really cool image of a medieval street on Google, but when zoomed in everything was kinda vague and felt "off". Turned out to be AI. I'd say AI is good at capturing a "vibe" but when it comes to precision and detail it's nowhere near a human artist.
    Edit: if you're on Windows 10 and only have 1 screen, the default gallery app can be locked so it's always on top, which is really useful if you want a reference image to be open without having to alt+f4

      On the other hand, there are also artists who legit plagiarize other works and calling it as an inspiration in order to escape public anger.

    Since caves and cliffs, I started to love floating isles. My whole base is a collection of floating isles above the ocean. For me there are three main advantages:
    1. Having the lowest surface of the isle 128 blocks above the ground or sea, helps spawning rules.
    2. Less surface to light, so easy to spawn proof. Other isles within 128 blocks can be used for spawning, because:
    3. The inside of the isle can be hollow, slabbed off and also used to house about all the farms.

You were able to show us the middle part of building that I always feel is missing from some "mega builds" within the Minecraft community. Usually we only get to see the beginning, maybe a little bit of the inspiration and some trial and error clips, but then there's a huge mental(?) gap between that and the finished product. It's refreshing and enjoyable to see your thought process and I wish more people went into details like the palette of blocks they will work with and how revelations (ex. you using grindstones between the rigging) come to be. I think one of the things people often forget with age of sail large ships is that the main body of the ship actually gets wider as it goes down from the top deck. Then after it reaches a certain chubbiness it pretty sharply cuts in and forms the keel. Also metal. The bottoms of boats features copper fairly prominently. AND folks back in the day likes pretty things so the wood was frequently painted too.

    love the video - as an architectural designer, I just want to emphasize that architects do this all the time. visual inspiration is a huge aspect of creative design. for those feeling overwhelmed or unmotivated bc it feels like you are copying someone else’s idea, just remember that even professionals utilize other’s work to inspire their process, that’s why we publish and share work, it’s a huge part of understanding how to design. I even have utilized ideas from minecraft when working on projects bc being creative goes a very long way. being creative doesn’t mean you have to always have original idea, it’s meant to be a process. recreating something can open up so many new ideas, and the best way to prevent creative blocks is to just start, even if it’s “copying”. you’ll generate your own ideas as you go through it. also remember to have fun and enjoy, it’s easy to get lost in the process.

    • @aBenY-lh1xx
      @aBenY-lh1xx 4 месяца назад

      also - artists constantly will sketch existing things to better understand what it is they are working on; objects, scenery, buildings, people, etc are great examples of things that inspire us. even in minecraft, building something that isn’t an original idea will go a long way to making you a better builder/designer!

This is why the flying Dutchman ship in potc is not actually a Dutchman 😅 but it looks a lot less cool if you have the helmsman below the ship, and not very dramatically steering on top of it 🙈

    just cool! I like it. You don't just make survival and kill mobs etc... You also show us how to build such things.

    This has barely any relevance, but once my brother discovered a floating shipwreck in Minecraft on a shared survival world. But only half of it was floating a hundred blocks in the air- the other half generated normally in the sand. we should’ve made a cool build out of that…

    One feature i think would be a cool feature Mojang could add would be the ability to add dye to Cut blocks using the stonecutter. I think that would add the right or at least close to the right shade to the blue in the build.

    The ship could also be a pirate ship from the end! Those are floating as well, it could’ve somehow made its way through a portal and into the over world!

    To be honest, those who claim not to build off of inspiration but rather their own creativity are not truly reflecting on where that creativity stems from. While the sources of a person's creativity may not be apparent, potentially even to themselves, they are all built upon prior understandings and experiences and considerations.
    Using creative mode allows for the refinement and visualisation of concepts, aiding in the expression of your imagination and creative process. You are no more or less imaginative, or creative, or "legit" by utilising the tools available to you: creative mode; in order to achieve the finished product - that claim is simply an attempt to place their means of creative expression above another. In truth these different approaches coexist without one being inherently superior to the other.

    Honestly I play in peaceful. I dislike that creepers no longer have tip taps allowing you to move them away from your chest monster and after one too many times of having mine explodificating into bits, I started playing in peaceful. I get a lot of shade for it but I have expanded more in Minecraft because I don't fear losing progress to a ninja creeper. Everyone plays differently. Some break world records, some use world edit and some of us tackle insane projects in survival with 2 stone masons and a 10 plus stack of terracotta for the next step lol. Can't wait to see how this project goes as I catch up on the MCSG :D

    To me some of my the best builds come from creative first.

    • @kordellcurl7559

      Especially when it is as big as decked out. A lot of the red stone and mob testing were in creative. So yes creative is always apart of the process of building. Even in real life a lot of buildings are from blueprints and never freehand built and cities require blueprints to even get the permits.

      In science, "theory" is the highest praise a claim/explanation attempt of a phenomenon can get. If you're proposing a new way to explain something, it starts out as "hypothesis".
