Great reminder about the use of non-toxic
paints, so the birds
will be safe.
No paint is healthy for birds to consume.
Go to a thrift shop. Buy a largish, pretty, shallow ceramic bowl. Use outdoor adhesive to glue it to up turned flower pot. No painting. Safe. Cheaper. Pile some stones in middle to be above water level. Provides a safe perch for bees and other insects that also need water.

Good idea. Paint is toxic to birds. This kind of paint appears to be rather non- permanent, especially when exposed to water after awhile....

@@looploop2634 NO! Plastic slowly degrades in heat, those micro-particles are not good for any animal’s digestive system/health.
As previous poster stated: ceramic bowl.
Water soaks into terra-cotta and will break down the paint, it will chip off. I know from experience.

I learned the hard way too. I made a beautiful terra cotta birdbath and even used Thompson's water seal and several coats of enamel sealant and it still didn't last very long. Broke my heart to throw it away.
Then we have birds ingesting paint chemicals.... great job! LOL
And some paints with even wash off...like acrylics as they are water soluble. These look like acrylics

If you must paint it, paint only the outside. For me, I wouldn't paint it at all.
In my yard I simply put a large TC saucer on the ground under a tree. All sorts of critters visit it to get a drink or take a bath. And it's easy to clean. Every morning I go out and dump any water that might be left, rinse it and fill with fresh water.
The paint is toxic for birds, and it looks tacky anyway. It would look way better just left the natural terra cotta color, and it'd be safe.
I don't think Savvy's answering. So if anyone else has info on the right kinds of paint to use, the right glue for this project and which kind of sealer works and is non toxic, I think all of us readers would appreciate it

I hope people who copy this are making sure that they use non-toxic paint so when the birds are drinking the water it's not killing them. Paint has a tendency to float off after a bit anyway. And paint can be very toxic from cheap stores and even the expensive stores has a lot of heavy metals in it which birds don't tolerate much at all. I know from working at a wildlife clinic but also having a medical background in people and animals. It's very cute but you must look for a line of completely non-toxic paints that you would paint your spoon with and eat your cereal in the morning. You have to trust it that much!

Gomez Addams .... not only what you said about toxicity; that was the first thought I had too, but one hour in the hot sun and this baby is going fall to pieces. Hot glue isn’t meant to support that kind of weight nor stand up to direct sunlight. What is it with ‘do-it-yourselfers’ always wanting to bypass all the important parts of a project, like safety and structural integrity? It could turn out to be a complete death trap, but as long as it’s clever, cute and made with zero effort, it’s a winner!

Dollar Tree sells each pot for $1. The paint is good for more than one item and doesn't cost more than a couple of dollars. Buy outdoor paint. I guess the glue is expensive.

@@livegift not my dollar tree. They have crappy plastic knock offs that isn't BPA free. So not safe for wildlife

I was wondering about the paint, some paint will even break down after it rains on it once.
Everything breaks down in the sun. There are paints that are safe to use with animals.
Sooooo you put paint on something an animal will bathe in because it looks pretty? Was the clay not good enough?

I am cautiously motivated and concerned about how safe this paint is also. How to set up water system? Is this a pumping system? Keeping it fresh.
@@tinagraham1833 birds drink from bodies of water with fish, gator & sea cow shit, they will be fine with an algae bloom or 2 lol.

You should not be using that paint inside the bird bath. I don't know if you do if there is away to safely seal it.
Also if you don't use outdoor acrylics meant for outdoor decor. and etc. The paint will peel and flake. I didn't know it had to be outdoor Paint when I painted my garden decor. After a year it all was flaking off even thought I bought spray I a can that was supposed to have UV protection. I was told to use like a laquer after painting.

Lov a the color choices. Birds will be happy. How well did it hold up in the weather. Rain, sun, hail, wind, etc? Did the glue break down during the season and have to be reglued?

My retrievers and lab loved to tear up the filling from blankets. I stopped leaving that in their area of play. They are so adorable.

Just when I thought contact cement did everything. Here we go with a glue stick gun.
You have to spray a clear coat after painting otherwise the pots will mold and it’ll ruin the paint.
Have seen dollar tree do it yourself videos using glass much better idea than painting and glueing terracotta pots.
Buy a 1:2 size of water lily terracotta tub n fill water .it wont cost much. I have kept in my terrace ..i have seen
