Installing a Hidden Kill Switch on a KTM EXC

  • I'm no auto electrician but this is an easy method to wire in a hidden kill switch on your KTM. Here in Australia these bikes don't come standard with keyed ignitions or even ignition switches. A hidden kill switch provides a small measure of security if you want to be able to leave your bike unattended for short periods of time.

    Can't believe there is no keyed ignition. I think this is a great idea for any bike. Not 100% security but better than nothing.

    Great video. If I'm understanding this correctly, you are picking up a ground signal from the brown wire on the 6-pin connector, and using the switch to send this ground signal onto the yellow/blue wire. If that is the case, why not just get the ground signal from any chassis ground bolt and leave the 6-pin connector alone. I.e. connect the black wires from the switch as follows: 1) to any chassis ground bolt, 2) to the yellow blue wire? This way, you don't need to go through the hassle of disassembling the 6pin connector. Let me know if I have misunderstood or if there is some reason why you need the ground signal from that 6-pin connector. Thanks and keep up the great work

      Shit man it's been like 3 years since I did this. I think what you're saying is correct though. I think maybe there wasn't any decent grounding point behind the headlight on this bike, or nothing that seemed suitable anyway. Possibly there is though. Ideally I wanted to disable the starter motor with the same switch but my technical knowledge apparently didn't extend that far. Maybe it's not possible with that type of switch anyway 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for the comment mate

      Forks were out getting lowered, just coincidence. Yeah mate nothing can stop dedicated thieves if they really want your bike but these measures can slow down the opportunistic ones who might see ya bike at the gas station while you're inside paying or whatever. I use my little kill switch a lot, gives me a little peace of mind. Bikes are insured for theft anyway though but still....... :)

    Hey great video! I have a 2004 ktm 450 smr that I just bought a new led lighting kit for. The kit comes with a new light and horn and blinker controller but my old controller has my kill switch. While this new controller in the kit does not have a kill switch. Could I do this method and use the kill switch I install as the one and only kill switch and be able to turn off my bike when riding? Thanks

    • @MVDBR
      @MVDBR  3 года назад +1

      Mate honestly I couldn't tell ya, I'm no expert I only know that what I did in this video worked for me. I pieced together the method from a bunch of dodgy videos and websites and decided to make my own vid hoping to help people looking to do the same thing. In your case mate though it's probably worth giving it a try, in theory it SHOULD work if your bike has the same wiring setup as mine.

    One question. I bought apico kill switch and I want to connect to my dirtbike. I cut my original kill switch behind the mask and I have two black wires, and apico has one black cable and earth wire. How do I connect it? I need help here.

      I'll paste my reply here as well in case it helps anyone.... I'm sorry mate I'm not an electrician or anything I just figured this method in the video from similar things other people have done. But.... generally kill switches just earth the coil circuit so it shouldn't matter which wire goes to which... I would just connect black to black and black to brown and try it. Again I'm no expert on this stuff so do so at your own risk... sorry I can't be of more help. Cheers

    Bro awesome video! My question is .. is there a way to wire it so that the starter won’t even turn? Reason I’m asking is I’m trying to protect my Dirtbike from my alcoholic brother.. the idiot will drain the battery trying to start the thing like that..

    • @MVDBR
      @MVDBR  3 года назад +1

      Sorry mate, ideally I would have liked to do mine that way too and I tried to figure it out but no success. Bit beyond my noob skillset haha. If you have a kickstart at least hopefully the battery would have enough juice left to get it going even if he drained it with the starter.

    • @thisguyeddiex7136
      @thisguyeddiex7136 3 года назад +1

      @@MVDBR no worries dude! I actually just figured out a small fix today.... so if you follow the starter button wire, it runs behind the front plate. There is a small 3 prongs connector. If you unplug it the bike won’t even turn over. I should probably mention this is on a 21 ktm 300xc for thos who want to do same thing as a temporary solution

    • @AussieCharm
      @AussieCharm 2 года назад +1

      You can easily achieve what you are asking using a DPDT 2 position (ON-ON) switch by wiring up one side of the switch like this guy did and wiring up the opposite site to the starter button but in the 'opposite' position, so basically when you flick the switch it turns the kill switch ON and the starter button OFF
