  • I am guessing that the first segment here is very close to, if not the routine from the stage show usually listed as "Dai Francis pays tribute to Al Jolson" - note that when the girls come on spinning their spirals, it is the same setup used for the 1969 LP cover of "Those Magnificent Minstrels On The Talking Machine".
The second is presumably the "Doo Dah Dey" finale number.
You can certainly see why the stage show(s) ran and ran and ran, and toured and toured and toured. Mitchell Minstrels and Maids - I salute you!
And I curse the fact that I was born in September '87, when the last stage shows had taken place that summer. Damn, damn and damn.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... in my book, Dai Francis out-Jolsons the original Al by a mile!
Okay, the picture quality is pure fuzz, but the sheer excitement of a live show is there. It certainly sent the usual tingle up my spine! And I'll bet it was the best 12 minutes, 44 seconds of the entire Royal Variety Performance. I will download when time permits as my Internet connection is dodgy and the troupe seem to be gargling as they sing, but hopefully 'it'll be all right on the night'.
I saw the Minstrels from the Grand Circle at His Majesty's Theatre, Aberdeen, when on holiday there with my Aunt Peggy over 50 years ago (sorry, jwf... don't mean to rub your nose in it). Not the usual star trio, but a fantastic night nevertheless. Stan Sennett 'flew' a plane on stage towards a back-projection country lane with a hapless cyclist pedalling like mad to keep ahead of him.
Thanks again, jwf, for presenting yet another episode of the type of music we love... complete with date stamp of 4/11/62.

Thank you so much for posting this part of the 1962 Royal Variety Show, I didn't think I would ever see this again.
You are correct inasmuch as this is the same tribute to Al Jolson that was playing at the Victoria Palace at the time. Dai Francis was without doubt the star of the show although Tony and John were also superb.

It's nice to see this precious footage from this Royal Variety Show, I have an off air Audio recording of what I guess is the 1970 Royal Varierty show on Reel To Reel And I have to say I wish more clips from the shows were available, I don't know whether it' just all locked up in archives or wiped but you don't see much of the older shows.

A lot of the old Minstrel Shows have been wiped but there is still a good amount that are stored in the BBC archives - problem is that they will not release any of the old shows. Great shame.

Jolie1950 The survival statistics are quite surprising, Out of all the pre-colour Top of The Pops episodes there are only two complete episodes left,The Black and White Minstrel show has 80+ episodes left from that same time period (The oldest being from 1959) so it has survived quite well compared to other shows.

What most people don't realize is the while the TV show was a BBC production the stage show was a separate entity produced by BOB LUFF (in association with Bernard Delfont.
Bob Luff also owned the Tiller school of Dancing so naturally a lot of the Mitchell Maids were recruited from there. So a lot of the girls in this clip could often be seen on the Palladium stage on a Sunday Night as well.
