  • Welcome back to the finest county of them all, ESSEX! I'm joined by Dawn for a medium long distance walk following the River Colne from Colchester to Brightlingsea. We passed through an area of Essex that I have never actually explored and it was truly amazing! We met up and camped with Andrew and Kelly from The Gr8 Outdoors 2022 channel who very kindly gave me some birthday presents, it being my 35th in a few days time since filming this. We found a cracking spot beside the river near Arlesford Creek, where the Colne heads out to the estuary and where it meets the sea at our final destination of Brightlingsea.

I filmed the whole thing on my new GoPro Hero 9 Black camera, having purchased a few new bits of kit to go with it such as a HUGE tripod, Joby Gorilla tripod, GoPro Media Mod with built in microphone and extra batteries! I am absolutely loving this new set up, it's making filming and even editing fun again, not to mention increasing the quality of videos I put out! If you would like to know what the set up is etc, I will consider making a short video detailing it.
Hope you enjoy joining us on this cracking little adventure, thanks for watching and supporting the channel. If you haven't subscribed already, it'd be awesome if you could, it helps get the channel promoted more on here and gets me closer to that elusive 10000 subs milestone! A like of the video and a nice comment wouldn't go amiss either! Enough of that. Cheers!

It’s amazing Tom when you force your way out your front door in the cold wet January what you can find. Well done on getting out there again

Fantastic video. So many good memories packed into this video for me. I was bought up in Brightlingsea and I spent many happy days wild camping along the estuary. My first ever girlfriend lived in wivenhoe and I lived at the Hythe in Colchester for several years. Thanks for sharing this 😊😊😊😊

I walked this in the 1980's. Great area! According to my map there was a footpath going across Arlesford Creek! Of course, I discovered there isn't! But I took a rowing boat ferry from Brightlinsea so I could continue on to St. Osyth. One dramatic moment was when I rescued a seagull caught in a thorn bush. I got a bloody hand and no thanks from the bird! There's still a bloody mark on my map.
    Yes - poor old Ron!

Another great video, Tom. Lovely walk and history (which I love) along the way. Like the new setup and you can tell the difference in your recent content. This time of year can be great - if it’s not raining. Poor Ron.

Glad you enjoyed it mate. It's probably due to the fact that I am always trying to find a spot where the photos and footage will look better rather than the sensible sheltered spot! The two rarely go hand in hand!

Great vid :), Don't chuck your old hexagon stove away, the bend in the metal can be easily sorted with a blow torch and a but of elbow grease to straighten it, Fix it and pass it on now you have two :) Cheers

Thanks for the tip! I'll see if I know a friend who has a blowtorch, I'm not to be trusted with tools!

Many happy returns for your 35th. As a lifelong Colchester resident, I rather enjoyed this vlog. During the first 2020 lock down, I did a series of walks along the estuary including the route you took, so the vlogs scenery looked very familiar. It's quite exposed along the whole route, so I'm glad I did it in summer. As you pointed out, the route mostly uses the old 'Crab and winkle' railway line from Wivenhoe to Brighlingsea which was a victim of the Beeching cuts in the 60s.

It's a groundsheet to protect the bottom of a shelter and also bounce some body heat back up during winter. A guy called wild skye gear on ebay sells all different sizes.

If its the one I think you mean, it's a new zip up hooded fleece from OEX. It's quite chunky and bulky but so warm and comfy. Good zips and pockets, deep hood.

why did the soldiers paint their pill boxes bright colours ? The Germans would have spotted them from miles away.
