Have you seen him trying to sit still just for 5 minutes during his first RV trip when they went to do meditation? Dude can't stay serious to save his life lol
I absolutely understand how being vocal during meditation makes you feel lighter and better. It's the same thing when you scream out your emotion. But steadily and longer period of time which i'm assuming helps you keep the clear mind state for longer time. Being surrounded by nature helps as well...and that's just a fact that everyone in the world should know about. Get out alone to the forest to think and breath is something that been helping me with my depression and anxiety till i moved to place away from it...and everything came back. I'm glad you've done this to show us a glimpse of what monk life is.

Buddhism has been more akin to a lifestyle than a religion because many do not see Buddha as a deity, but as someone who has, and continues after his passing, to encourage many to reach enlightenment. There is actually a type of Buddhism called Secular Buddhism where it is not based in a deity, but instead basing itself on humanist, skeptical, and agnostic values and valuing pragmatism and oftentimes naturalism, removing beliefs of the supernatural or paranormal. The texts are then taken in a historical and cultural context of the time they were written and read them under a rationalist and evidential views. Not saying you need to follow it, but with your interest in Buddhism as an atheist, this might be the type of Buddhism worth looking into.
My Great-grandmother was Buddhist and I would join her to "pray" infront of the Gohonzon when I was little... When I saw you read the Sutra I got so emotional that tears started rolling down my eyes remembering my abuelita who raised me while my mom worked day in and day out... Thank you for reminding me such beautiful memories! ❤

A fascinating story, however interesting that even when you retreat to a Zen Buddhist Temple, we need the advert for TOKYO TREATS to pay the bills. We all balance the spiritual with the everyday.
I loved this video so much! Though I’m curious.. I heard once that Buddhism is more a philosophy than religion, and that anyone of any religion could also follow it. Is that true? Could you both follow Shinto and Buddhism?
I hope Joey and Garnt get to train as Shaolin monks and learn about Chan Buddhism in the sequel episode. Maybe a Trash Taste special in the Northern Shaolin temple?
So Zen breathing is really cool. You breath through your nose and you fill your belly ( actually 2 inches below your bellybutton ) and then you breathe out through your mouth. You get this sensation of more oxygen than you’ve ever had in your entire life. You’re filling your Dantian❤

Yeah! Hyperventilation followed by numbness - it forces your somatic system into calm mode (breathing from the abdomen). If you've never tried sheshin (spelling), essentially 8-hour breathing meditation, I fully recommend the self-torture session. And I still want that black Chainsaw Man T, so save me a L or XL, please.
Now this is what this channel should be like. It's great to see you do something Japanese instead of eating too much or risking your life in some damn fool stunt which you can do in any country in the world (ok there aren't volcanoes everywhere). I am an atheist but Buddhism is the real deal. Sure, as it manifests in various cultures it accretes various ceremonies and superstitions. But at its core is an upgrade to the human operating system. Buddhist philosophy is an amazingly accurate description of the human condition and the way out of suffering. And it’s not just a bunch of commandments or beliefs, meditation and the mindfulness it cultivates gives you the means to investigate and verify it claims for yourself.

Something to note about religion in Japan is that religion doesn't mean same thing as it does in many other parts of the world. Most people don't see Buddhism, for example, as the only belief system to follow day to day. In fact, most follow both Buddhism and Shintoism simultaneously.
