Yeah, “attacking” is right. Stevie had to attack the strings due to his predilection for THICC strings and really high action. You’d swear he was fighting with his guitar to make it sound the way he could make it sound.
2:28 Regarding upstrokes: do you think he doing upstokes because SRV's idol and the model for his playing was Albert King who famously played with his guitar strung backwards with the high E string on the top of the guitar and the low e on the bottom. Thus, King had a unique sound since his down strums hit the high E first. Maybe SRV is trying to get his idol's sound with the upstrokes with the high E first?
Yes!!!!! Trying to finish writing my cd (85% done) before I demo it, and this week I was wondering why NO ONE talks about the nuances a mini-bend can give a note!!! You are the guy!!!!
This is sooo helpful- really has helped me sound better when playing this already. I still have a long way to go but this gets me some much needed momentum.
Wow! Such a great lesson! And you are such an amazing guitarist! Every time I watch one of your lessons(many over the years), I am very impressed with how you articulate them. I always look forward to your lessons...and your playing! Rock on! 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻
so mike started playing. i liked the video. he made his first point, it was super insightful so naturally i went to hit the like button, which i realized id already pressed. he made his second, third, and fourth point. and each and every single time i scrolled down to give this video a like just to re-realize id already liked it at the beginning based of the strength of mike's playing alone. ahahaha. they need to allow us to do star ratings or something so each time i scroll down i can give mike the extra points he deserves.
AOG, can you do some Robin Trower? Early material had that 70s psychedelic rock sound, then that progressed thru time, and is now very much a return to his blues roots! Like the tasty "Up and Gone"
Always love your videos, it is so informative and it helps, this particular video helped me understand what not to do with Stevie Ray's songs, I thought I was doing it good but clearly not :)
You nailed it. I was surprised how hard I had to crank that bar to get any play. I'm torn though because loosening them may mean some future tuning instability. I think I'll keep it this way and use the bar more until it relaxes over time.
I hesitate because it's embarrassing. For the Gilmour vid I used my pedalboard through my 1979 Fender Deluxe Reverb. People seemed to like it. But for this I used a plug in. A UAD Marshall Plexi plug in which is pretty decent but the guitar is most responsible for the tone. I could probably plug this thing in direct and it would sound great. Waiting 10 years for this guitar has paid off. hehe. :)
Damn it, I just noticed I spelled "Aggressive" wrong at the end. So whatever "Aggressinve" is, let's just go with it. haha.
Must’ve been typing pretty aggressinvely
Hey I'm a beginner, would you recommend learning to not look at the fret board or not looking at your picking hand to improve faster, thanks
1 way to ruin your video
@@nickg2717 sorry for the year late reply, but i would just recommend you do whatever makes you the most comfortable
This series is awesome. If you aren't sweating playing SRV, then you aren't playing SRV.
Having me play it is definitely a way of ruining any solo
Felt this
That’s what I was thinking :(
I realised I’ve been doing a Ruin this solo series all my life
That is freaking hilarious!

Probably the easiest way to ruin a SRV solo is to let me play the solo
I could beat you at a "ruin this solo contest."
Well boys I’m world champion at it so you can come and challenge me if you like
i love your profile picture, let's gonna be friends
Yes!!!!! Trying to finish writing my cd (85% done) before I demo it, and this week I was wondering why NO ONE talks about the nuances a mini-bend can give a note!!! You are the guy!!!!
Damn you can play every style, Mike. Nice work.
SRV without vibrato is absolutely criminal! Still sounds better than I could play it though
Love the 2340 running next to you there. Needles never bounced tho'. It must be a new reel of 456 right?
Hey please do how to ruin brian may's solo
YES!
This is sooo helpful- really has helped me sound better when playing this already. I still have a long way to go but this gets me some much needed momentum.

Making the most of your time off !! These video’s are very entertaining!!
Time off? I've never been busier in my whole life. hehe.

Much love from the Philippines 🤘
I challenge you to do 10 different Iron Maiden riffs with one guitar. Loved the vid to 😁🤟🏻
How to ruin Angus young solo would be a great one
Always love your videos, it is so informative and it helps, this particular video helped me understand what not to do with Stevie Ray's songs, I thought I was doing it good but clearly not :)
Stevie would feel honored, but he'd tell you to find and play your *own* style.
Its not like he didn't jock Hendrixs' steez
Such a excellent video lesson 👏🏼
Nice breakdown. And who in rock isn't a fan of SRV. Thank you for this video.
Do Angus Young next! Most wouldn't know it, but he uses some really interesting techniques. Let There Be Rock is probably the best example of this
yeah true. he tends to use different positions and bends the 22nd fret b string instead of many others that would use the 15th fret
I nvr knew that micro bending was a thing. I do that all the time.
Excellent lesson
Hey, nice Video. Can you a Video about hendrix' Solos, please. Maybe about the purple haze solo
Always been a fan of SRV! Good video!!
Great tight sound.
Mike, do you agree with the theory that Strats sound better tuned down half a step...
whats with the reel to reel? tape delay
Lol sounds like your trem springs are a little tight. I was afraid you were about to snap the bar off at the end before the bridge would even move.
You nailed it. I was surprised how hard I had to crank that bar to get any play. I'm torn though because loosening them may mean some future tuning instability. I think I'll keep it this way and use the bar more until it relaxes over time.
That’s up to you man but I think the hardening of that bar is going to soften up before the springs! It’s just a couple screws...
Kirk hammet or Marty Friedman?
You got da tone bro !!
Thom yorkes top guitar techniques 👍🏻
Weird chords, odd times, strange pretty melodies, and no solos. Double that on Jonny
Yes!! That would be awesome
You should probably add "not making a bend face" to the list ;) But TBH, in this solo underbending was way less detracting than in the Gilmour solo.
do a video where you "improve" a kurt cobain solo
☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
Great video Mike, could you share some insight on how you got this tone?
I hesitate because it's embarrassing. For the Gilmour vid I used my pedalboard through my 1979 Fender Deluxe Reverb. People seemed to like it. But for this I used a plug in. @@TheArtofGuitar Haha, that guitar sure sounds fat and dirty!
Nice
Make 'The only way to ruin a Kirk Hammet Solo' and don't use a wah pedal. An easy one :))
Ways to ruin a Clapton solo would be amazing!!
The bad version sounds out of tune. The good version makes me want to do a couple of shots.
Besides oversimplifying the outro of that song when playing, I'm only making half of these mistakes...
Where did you get that shirt? I want it....
Stevie is just a beast... those heavy strings of his, developed strong hands to do those things on guitar and tone that's hard to get right
The hand problems in the future ain't worth it
Please do dimebag Darrell next!
How to ruin a Dimebag solo video would be awesome!
9. Not breaking a string
10. Not playing the guitar behind you back
Great sound great
What amp are you using??
Mike! Please do a slipknot artist series!
Nice tone
Do Slash!
Can you do a how to ruin a jack white solo
Do how to ruin the solo from Ruin by lamb of god
Hi man I am a beginner and can I have a lesson on how to play guitar who don't even know to touch one
I'd be very curious to see what a "8 Ways to RUIN a Kurt Cobain Solo!" video would entail!
Dimebag Darrell. How does one go about ruining one of his solos? Show us, Mike!
cool
I hear a lot of David Gilmore in SRV. Just sped up
Sounds more aggressive cause you switched to the neck from the 4th position lol.
Ways to ruin an Angus Young, Eagles, Slash, Jimmy Page solo
Do one for Jimmy Page solos
This series of ruining songs 😜 is awesome!
Probably gonna get destroyed for this...but what SRV song is this from?
Pride and Joy, outro solo.
Ruin jimmy page solo next would be nice

Get me to play it.
"How to play SRV solo like Lil Vayne"
A "good thumb plucking" and "really going nuts on your whammy bar". Sounds like I need to report this video...
🙏🏻👍🏼🇫🇷🍒
I can’t even hear you over that stuff in the background
What 'stuff'? What are you talking about?
Play a Les Paul
8 ways to ruin a paul gilbert solo!
How to ruin a Mark Knopfler solo
