Welcome to my neck of the woods, pleased to here you enjoyed the Cumbria coast line. May I recommend Ravenglass, for the Ratty Arms pub and the La'al Ratty.
I've just realised, I know I've BEEN to Ravenglass, on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, and Muncaster Castle . . . But I have absolutely no memory of actually being there or when it was.
I'm only 47.
I'm going to end up being a vegetable, aren't I? 😭😭😭
Great pub.
There were two other stations in Workington.
Workington Bridge, which closed on the 1st of January in 1951
And Workington Central, which closed on the 26th September in 1965
Also Workington North, which opened in November 2009 and closed in October 2010- which was opened to allow residents from the north side of a bridge which was damaged by floods, to access the town centre.
Nice! Thanks!
We had the joy of a train trip from Aberystwyth to Carlisle on a charter train, then it got better as it came back down the Cumbrian coast line to get back to where we started, a beautiful journey
"don't sink, don't sink"
Missed opportunity to do the infamous "woop woop don't sink" that airplanes do when they don't like how low they're flying..
Lol my parents hate flying I did that on the plane under my breath and they were 😮
brilliant vlog the Cumbrian coastline def looks like a beautiful line to ride & looks beautiful in the sunshine & the stations look like lovely stations
Last time did Cumbrian Coast Line, was with proper loco hauled trains, when the 37’s with MK2’s did the line.did 3 day rover to do these trains, was brilliant the thrash, wouldnt like doing on noisy draughty 156’s,but its lovely line, great video
Point to point idea: St. Bees to Beeston
via Honeybourne?
@@Eric_Hunt194 why not it makes sense!
Braystones to Bray (Dublin)? 🙈
Workington to Idle.
Bridge Strike on the Cumbrian Coast Line. Someone’s Forehead!
What, Drigg to Brigg, might be a bit difficult....
You had much better weather! I did a bit of the Cumbria Coast yesterday including walking from Braystones to Nethertown and it didn't stop raining and was very windy 😅
The North West England rail rover is also valid between Lockerbie and Carlisle without any time-restriction. Useful for me, living in Scotland!
Regarding Sellafield - one can also walk/cycle round the perimeter of Hunterston Power Station in Ayrshire, feeling like a total Imposter!
1:32 Roblox SCR
The Cumbrian Coast is massively underrated as a scenic route (even though it's known as one) - mostly because it's about 3.5 hours around the whole thing. Also yes, only 156s on that route these days. Now imagine doing it on a Pacer (142)!
I travel on the line once on loco hauled trains with Class 68s but rarely got off at the stations, great video
The bridge "It's so Shore-t" 😉
Did part of the Cumbrian Coast in 2016, back when the Northern 37s were running.
I think those ‘what on earth’ trains at Sellafield might have been nuclear flask trains. They are special trains which take nuclear waste from power stations to Sellafield for processing.
This section of track is featured in the Neil Gaiman short story "Shoggaths Old Peculiar" about an American Tourist doing a walking tour of the coastline.
What a shame that the train operating companies have never got round to modern observation cars.
Get them on Settle Carlisle as well, Fort William to Mallaig, Inverness to Kyle etc
Loco hauled with observation cars, what a treat that would be.
Running 156s is the cheapest option presumably. Why always go for cheap, go for best ....
sadly, not much north of about manchester gets any attention from the government or the railway companies, such a shame
Workington had 3 stations "Workington (main)" (existing station), "Workington Central" (car park & church next to the bridge on Oxford Street), and "Workington Bridge" (roundabout Northside Road/Calva Brow).
Drigg - next to the LLNWR (Low Level Nuclear Waste Repository) aka - a nuclear waste dump, but the sand dunes have natterjack toads and adders.
Seascale - no mention fo the sets of steps needed to get onto the trains, as no hump. The cannon near the station are alledgedly ones which were at Whitehaven and were spiked by John Paul Jones during the US Revolutionary War (War of Independence). Whitehaven being the only part of the British Mainland attacked by US forces during the war.
SIlecroft - fatnastic beach, also some standing stones near the village.
Ravenglass - the station building has been converted into a nice pub, and the village is a rare "double" UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park, a World Heritage site, but also part of the "Frontiers of the Roman Empire" World Heritage site as it has a roman fort, bath house and was a roman port.
A ticketing oddity was that it used to be cheaper to get the train from Ulverston to Drigg, than Barrow-in-Furness to Ravenglass - worked out about £3 cheaper, but you needed to tell the guard as Drigg was a request stop so you needed to tell them you weren't getting off there (just tell him you were meeting friends at the pub in Ravenglass).
Should also make a mention of the 2009 floods, when Workington's Northside Bridge was destroyed (RIP Bill Barker). But within weeks Network Rail built a temporary station "Workington North" which allowed people to bypass the huge detour to the next working road bridge as the rail bridge was the only usable crossing for miles.
Also, back in the late 1800s, Barrow (Barrow Hematite Steel Company Limited) was the largest producer of steel rail in the world - shipping their steel rail around the world to places like the US (building the likes of the Santa Fe line in the west and Mexico), Sweden, Australia, and South America. A number of railroad museums have exhibits and pieces of "Barrow Steel" rail.
My fav line is the Esk Valley in the East coast, from Middlesborough to Whitby. It’s really good you should try it!
I've used all Bootle stations for work. I worked at SEllefield and at Hugh Baird College. But never did the point to point. Maybe I should have done Barrow to Carlisle and then to Liverpool and then Southport. I worked at Barrow too. BAE systems and Seimenns .
Heh you'll only get 156's on that line given 150's, 158's and 195's are all banned from the Maryport-Carlisle section. Back in the day you had some variety with 142 Pacers and 153's, either on their own, in pairs or with a 142 or 156 (not to mention the loco-hauled period)
You were on my line and I didn't even know! I work that line! What day did you both travel along the line?
We were in Ravenglass and used the train to go for dinner at Drigg one evening. Lovely station and quite atmospheric in the late summer evening.
The lifeboat inn sound like a great pub to visit
Great video 👍. The official coast path leaves the beach about half way between Braystones and Nethertown and crosses some fields then takes you through Nethertown village then continues along the top of the cliff to St Bees. The route that you took is far more fun but only possible when the tide is out! The headland that you mention is called The Green and my home sits on top of it! A lot of the bungalows that you walked past are full time residences and not holiday homes.
Matlock Bath was (up to 2022 i think?) another station, where disused platform was accesible because public trail was there,
but, Cromford (on same line) is still accesible.
If You count Matlock Town (Heritage line) platform - it is another one.
BTW. 156's on this Cumbrian line are for tight clearance beyond Maryport.
There's a holiday cottage (the old station building) on the disused platform at Cromford, we've stayed there twice, it's amazing.
Sellafield a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant not a power plant. It takes nuclear waste in special wagons from all the UK’s nuclear power stations. Drigg has a waste tip for low level nuclear wars.
Amazing, fun, lovely video as always you two
I think railcards/travelcards work a bit differently down South when going to or through London...
Most of them have a caveat that states something along the lines of "Not valid for services that arrive at London Terminals before 9am or 10am"
Looks like you came back glowing with enjoyment...
Nethertown was not really twin track station. It was a passing place in the single line section Whitehaven to Sellafield. Like St Bees is a passing place.
I definitely would like to ride on the Cumbrian line as I never been to Cumbria apart from Carlisle that I only went past Carlisle.
Sellafield: The only train station and place in the UK to be mentioned in the Kraftwerk song, "Radioactivity" (1991 version). Apparently, there is a very rare 12-inch that mentions a driver of a Class 142 who had his egg sandwiches stolen at Whitehaven station.
Point to point idea: mill hill (london) mills hill (greater manchester)- mill hill (blackburn)
Another fantastic vlog from Nick and loved your enthusiasm & always great to see Natt and loved her T Shirt
Didn't you fancy stopping at St Bees? Views look great.
Brilliant video Nick, this is a line that I'd love to travel down someday, it looks amazing. Walking on some of those beaches, there is some rather dodgy terrain on them indeed lol.
Feck sake, I live in Workington, and didn't know you would be up here. I hope you enjoyed your time up this way.
I would have gone and met up with you. I love your content, keep up the good work.
I mean northern don’t do great railway journeys but this… is pretty good 👍
Never heard of the Settle-Carlisle line?
The Cumbrian Coast line is a time capsule with just about every type of signalling except retb. Catch it quickly though, as some of the manual crossings are being taken out..... modernisation is sneaking in.
Always nice to see footage of one of my local lines, don't have any myself, despite living there 😂
Great video as usual Nick! I think you might be turning into Jen with liking the views by the station! Also did Natt have to duck for that tunnel?
That line is on my list to visit still.
Have you explored the Cambrian Coast line up to Porthmadog, thags a stunningly scenic line too.
Workington has that interesting south facing bay platform which is unnumbered and appears to be just used by empty stock.Wigton has a tracked bay too probably no longer used and I think that Sellafield maybe has one too .
Did you pay full price for the ticket or save up tokens to get it for £10? I’ve done that line a few times in the past. Back in the day it used to be 153’s that worked it and for a short time it went loco hauled with 37’s. You need to read up about Sellafield/Windscale nuclear fuel reprocessing plant, a classic case of rebranding when something goes wrong! I has/did have a good visitors centre and cheap food, but then it would already be warmed up!! 😂
Great video Nat and Nick. All the best from an Australian rail fan.
3:35 this side you've got the sea. I wouldn't go too near the sea. Given the closeness to the Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Plant. Which is why Sellafield has it's own internal railway.
Bootle has a ticket machine!! Can Northern teach GWR to install some.
Not a Nuclear Power Plant - a former Plutonium production plant and granted there was a nuclear power station (the first in the country) but it closed in 2006.
The site is still processing nuclear waste to this day.
10:58 I visited the IOM for the first week of August. It’s strange in the way that it’s between the UK and Northern Ireland where you’re not charged roaming fees, but on IOM you are!
At one point whilst riding from Ramsey on the Manx Electric Railway, I got a message from my network provider welcoming me home. Whilst I was still on holiday. Proper weird. Probably happened on that bit of land you can see, I estimated it close to Barrow so it makes sense!
Oh by the way, ABSOLUTELY visit the island! It does heritage transport the right way, everything is government subsidised, and it’s entirely possible to buy a weeks travel card and make a profit on the morning of Day 2. Steam trains in the south, electric trams in the north, with the cutest little steam railway at Groudle Glen you’ve ever seen!
Just pick a week when it’ll be sunny, otherwise you’ll get rekt by the Irish Seas rain…
I know the touristy bits well, I need to get to know the Cumbrian coast more before partner and I have to move to London.
Here is a pointless journey for you Nick, Bicester North to Bicester Village. Lets see if you can do it one day if you have any time! (Not forcing you obviously)😂😂😂
That looks pretty boring, change at Haddenham & Thame Parkway or Princes Risborough. The longest part of the journey will be waiting for the train going the other way.
I loved the sound of the rails its so asmr and soo good
I was literally in the middle of typing about it when you mentioned the point to point
Point to Point: Nethertown to Netherfield
There used to be a Workington Central station, located where the Central Car Park is now, and across the road from the Washington Square shopping centre.
Central car park is now closed permanently.
Was it not time for another Point to Point at Bootle?!
Amazing vlog! Have you guys seen the Lake District in Cumbria?
Id like to ride this line someday but im suprised it takes 2 hrs from maryport to barrow!
You should do brigg in Yorkshire to brigg in Switzerland for a 50k special
@@NameReveal-yy7qb okay if nick agrees to that we need to make posters for everyone to sub to him coz that would be cool
Brigg is in North Lincolnshire, and it's Brig in Switzerland.
If you're in Brig, take the train through the Simplon tunnel to Domodossola, and then ride the Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi, known by its initials.😆
13:24 there's one in wales where you can actually go onto the abandoned platform and park where the old tracks used to be
Oooh!
@@NickBadley you will have to find it, I don't know even know it's current name but what I know is it's old name, it used to be the same name as the station other side of the bridge, you should visit there one day
Great video, I love the Cumbrian Line
Should have gone in waiting room om other platform video on loop of history of workington steel works and railway
Point to point : Gilingham ( Dorset ) to Gilingham ( Kent? )
For a home, do what I did. Buy a car that can tow, and get a second hand caravan for around £5000. Live in that and tour the country. I have lived in mine since 2014 and now live in Spain in it.
Try Pevensey and/or Normans Bay in East Sussex
Nat don’t wait for no one! 😂
The reason there's so many 156s on the Cumbrian coast and Furness lines is because the 150, 158 and 195 are too wide
Point to Point idea - Dalston (Cumbria) to Dalston (Kingsland or Junction) (London)
Workington North was another one.
is that the isle of man or is it the island of sodor ??
156 only on that line, apart from the Sellafield goods service
You can donanother point to Point bootle to bootle via bootle new strand
Another great and interesting video
hmmm
wokington to wokingham via woking?
Can you go to Shrewsbury ❤
Hi Nick. Do you plan to visit/stay at Corrour station
Can you go to the isle of whight😅
T has a railway
All the stations when?
Pointless journey idea buckshaw Parkway platform 1to manchester airport then to bucksaw parkway platform 2 but make it interesting
It really is pointless
So how many stations left to visit?
Should have gone to beach at drigg
Would have if we had the time!
My fav train is the loom or hull 🚆
Roughly how long ago did you do this? I was on this line for a short time a few weeks back and I hope I didn't just miss you!
His rover ticket was dated 19 July.
Point to point bradford interchange to bradfordf forster square
Boring, train into Leeds and another back out again. You could probably do it in an hour or so.
Sellafield is unfortunately not a nuclear power station now or a reprocessing site now its more a less now a large decommissioning job and nuclear waste dump waiting for a long term storage site to be decided upon
That nuclear power plant you were at is the site of the fifth worst nuclear disaster ever
Hi, could you do a Point to Point starting or ending in Somerset. Wikepidia said that there is a highbridge in Somerset and Scotland. I looked to see if you could get between the two and you would have to go from Highbridge to Spean Bridge in Scotland and then walk to the Scottish highbridge which looks like a small village.
But did Nat have to duck...?
GLORY!!!'m favoured, $140K every 3weeks! And am retired i can now give back to the locals in my community and also support God's work and the church. God bless America 🇺🇸 ❤️
Hello, how do you achieve such biweekly returns? As a single parent i haven't been able to get my own house due to financial struggles, but my faith in God remains strong.
I'm inspired.
Please spill some sugar about the biweekly stuff you mentioned
I raised 75k and Kate Elizabeth Becherer is to be thanked. I got my self my dream car 🚗 just last weekend, My journey with her started after my best friend came back from New York and saw me suffering in dept then told me about her and how to change my life through her.Kate Elizabeth Becherer is the kind of person one needs in his or her life! I got a home, a good wife, and a beautiful daughter. Note: this is not a promotion but me trying to make a point that no matter what happens, always have faith and keep living!

Miss Kate Elizabeth Becherer is a remarkable individual who has brought immense positivity and inspiration into my life.
You two are like the English version of @milesintransit with Aleena
