  • I've cycled past Snape Castle (near Bedale, North Yorkshire) on loads of occasions, but I've never been inside - or, rather, the bit the public can visit which is the Chapel of St Mary, via the old, overgrown castle ruins. (The other part of the castle was restored at some point, although many windows are bricked up.)
castlesfortsbattles.co.uk says: "Upgraded from a Manor House into a more substantial structure in the fifteenth century, Snape Castle was owned by the powerful Neville family. The castle was used as a residence by Cecily Neville, mother of Edward IV and Richard III, and later by Catherine Parr who went on to marry Henry VIII. It was briefly occupied during the Pilgrimage of Grace."
I stopped off on a bike ride around the area to visit Snape Castle Chapel for the first time - and it is so creepy! Definitely has an atmosphere! It was built by the Nevilles in the 15th century but at some later point in its history served as a grain store.
