I've had an X1 for about 3 months now. I'm very happy with it. My only real complaint is that I find the breaks a little unresponsive but part of that is due to the low friction tires that come standard. Keep in mind also that the sDrive28i is rear wheel, not front wheel, drive. All in all, it's a good little car for the price point if you want a well equipped BMW at a budget price.
Mistake: No front wheel drive in this vehicle - it's rear wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Also, the gap in the engine department is to make room for the optional 6 cylinder engine. Must be a weak driver on the heavy steering. The steering is fantastic. So much whining in this review, but not a lot of delivery on the driving experience. I've had my X1 for about 3 months now, it's by far the best car I have ever owned. What a fantastic vehicle. If you want something that is a sports car, a hatch back to haul gear, a luxury car, and an economy car (good on gas mileage), this is a great choice!
+Dan Sivertson They redid the X1 for this year (and made it a much better car), I think you have one of those, every review I've seen of the old one wasn't very good.
I've got a 2015 X1 xdrive28i. It's the bomb. I love it! My only diss on the car so far is the gas mileage is poorer than expected. I drive mostly city driving and I am aggressive. When the turbo kicks in, the engine sucks gas very quickly. However, it is a good quick car. Very few vehicles will put you in your place on the freeway. The 2015 X1 is great for dominating urban freeways and mountain freeways. It's also practical for toting gear and taking friends skiing. It's a very solid hatchback that has BMW prestige at a reasonable price.
Am I the only one here got impressed by X1? It's a decent package offered by BMW. For $33K you get AWD, 240hp, a BMW badge, and 22/33mpg. Can't really ask more. The long bonnet looks a little stretched, but it's not that bad. Regardless of what you all say, I expect this car to sell really well in the US.
It's kinda funny that this is one of the better video reviews, and its on the 3rd page of a "x1 xdrive28i" search, and the 7th page of a "bmw x1" search.
Alex K. CNET does these videos for people who wanna see the head unit's functionality. Other car reviewers skip over it, but that's 50% of your experience owning a car.
The space in front of the engine is there not because they "wanted to get the proportions right", it's there to house an i6 engine. Also, the further back the engine is, the better the weight distribution and handling. Brian is obviously a tech journalist, not a car one.
The steering is heavy because most don't come with the Servotronic $250 option which is a speed sensitive power steering. I think this is an error on BMW's part, i think it should be standard, hell even raise the price $250 dollar if you have to, to keep the BMW drive quality.
So You think that an i6 engine need not sit further back to increase the weight distribution. The reason for higher space in the front is just cost cutting. BMW doesn't want to change the many components, just for putting in a smaller engine. This is the case with all automakers. This is just being pointed out.
His comment about the space in front of the engine have to do with proportions is wrong. The in-line four cylinder longitudinally mounted in this X1 is not the only engine option. The in-line six will fill up that space.
I would like someone to dino some of these 4 cylinders that claim 240 hp.. There's no way that those numbers are right if a 3700 lb car can accelerate that quickly. Similar story for the 3 series turbo 4 as well.
This car may not make a lot of sense in sunny Cali, but believe me if you live in a 4 season area where its snowy and muddy half of the year, and the roads are crappy crossovers like this are the perfect choice. All you need to do is a ECU reflash to get few extra ponies from that engine, and a set of good all season tires. And in the real world this little bugger will beat a lot of more powerfull cars. And NO there is no FWD X1, get your facts straight.
Audi RS3 costs 50k, but it wins Maserati in a race. Of course the bigger Audi's cost more, but Audi is a really reliable luxury car. Even my dad's Audi A4 has wood finishing!
I don't think the engine being that far back is just to get the proportions right .. BMW likes sitting their engines as far behind the front wheels as they can manage. See the F30 3 Series for another example.
Nothing to do with that. It is all about BMW's classic weight distribution. The front axel is placed in front of the engine block to centralise the weight. You need room at the front to do that. 1, 3,5,6,7 series...they are all the same.
+B.J. Johnston I'm pretty sure he misspoke. It is rear wheel and you can add all wheel drive. I have a 2013 and that was what I was told were the options.
and i guess you're perfect at everything you do ? have a look at his other videos and it's evident he has a lot of experience in automotive journalism.
@Michael Leibowitz Yes, I would have the 1 series because there was room for a sub 3 series coupe, and the 1 series M is badass. But, honestly the X1 is the answer to a question no one asked.
karel Gevaert ok, that's splitting hairs. if we want to be jerks about it, then i'll tell you that even an xDrive is RWD. it is a RWD platform and the AWD version, while it can send power to the front wheels will inherently run the read wheels. also, the xDrive system cannot send all of the power to the front wheels...again, it is essentially RWD.
My friend..,if you are looking for a refinement, reliability, details build with atention...my advice as a person who is in the car buisness from 22 years is to take Infiniti or Lexus:) BMW is a brand famous with seductive design and unmatched handling, but the price you pay for it is constant problems with electronics,ECU,steering locks and all these assistents...the list is long:) As a BOSCH mechanic i would say that KIA is faar more reliable of making cars than BMW!!
LOL! cup holder LOL! Europeans are still not getting how important a cup holder is for Americans. What would you expect from those who rely on public transportation to commute and live in pocket size countries.
Where the fuck did I say the i6 version doesn't need not sit further back to benefit the weight distribution? WHERE? It's deemed by BMW to be good enough with the i6, it just happens to be better with the i4 for packaging reasons. I don't need you to re-explain what I've just said clearly. So, don't please.
that awkward moment when audis are the same price as bmw..... and i have a bmw and i don't scream: HEY! Look at my expensive car! btw its a $75,000 2013 x5 lola
Android is dumbest in 2013? - bumbest statement i ever heard, stay in automobile buddy, dnt make statement about softwares , coz u r insulting urself:) bdw nice video!
Has anyone else noticed the title it doesn't say what crossover
+Stephen Pearson and the X1 vs X3 length comparisons show the same number

Do you feel like you're driving an suv? It looks too close to the ground.

And it is also there because BMW designs usually have long hoods to make it feel more dynamic.

Driving a car isn't about the apps included. It's about DRIVING and just driving not looking at Facebook.
jbooggie6 I'm just noticing how much driving in general has changed.
Alex K. CNET does these videos for people who wanna see the head unit's functionality. Other car reviewers skip over it, but that's 50% of your experience owning a car.
Love this vehicle.
The space in front of the engine is there not because they "wanted to get the proportions right", it's there to house an i6 engine. Also, the further back the engine is, the better the weight distribution and handling.
Brian is obviously a tech journalist, not a car one.
the reason for the engine set so far back is for better weight distribution
plus in can accommodate the 6 cylinder engine
As well, I don't think the X1 comes in FRONT wheel drive, the other option is the sDrive model which is REAR wheel drive....
Yep.. he definitely got that point wrong.
No on the BMW website itself it says that the sDrive28i is rear wheel drive
the space in the engine compartment is for the i6
Add in the title- "X1". Xdrive28i just tells engine and drivetrain.
I believe BMW calls it an SAV. Sports Activity Vehicle
I think it is somthing like the Audi "Allroad" a kinda OfRoad-ish wagon for when you have to drive on the grass around the traffic jam :D
The steering is heavy because most don't come with the Servotronic $250 option which is a speed sensitive power steering. I think this is an error on BMW's part, i think it should be standard, hell even raise the price $250 dollar if you have to, to keep the BMW drive quality.
suv or wagon? what about Swagon?

@Briancooley How are you so damn good doing this?
He probably mis-spoke. BMWs are RWD and Brian is perfectly aware of that fact given past videos.
His comment about the space in front of the engine have to do with proportions is wrong. The in-line four cylinder longitudinally mounted in this X1 is not the only engine option. The in-line six will fill up that space.
Yes! Cooley's back!
Are your lengths (175.5 vs 175.5) right?
another misspoke lol
X1s are rear wheel drive or all wheel driver, NOT front wheel drive.
0:50 8" shorter?
I would like someone to dino some of these 4 cylinders that claim 240 hp.. There's no way that those numbers are right if a 3700 lb car can accelerate that quickly. Similar story for the 3 series turbo 4 as well.
Not everyone wants a wagon as big as the X3 or X5.
This car may not make a lot of sense in sunny Cali, but believe me if you live in a 4 season area where its snowy and muddy half of the year, and the roads are crappy crossovers like this are the perfect choice. I'd like to see a comparison between this an the new a4 based Allroad.
I don't think the engine being that far back is just to get the proportions right .. BMW likes sitting their engines as far behind the front wheels as they can manage. See the F30 3 Series for another example.

Yeah I know I was saying that sDrive is rwd not fwd
I can't wait for your review of the new lexus is350.
different between wheelbase and bumper to bumper
I'm confused. X1 was RWD with AWD sDrive was FWD but now they are doing away with the RWD altogether??? Is this as of MY2016 in North America?
+B.J. Johnston I'm pretty sure he misspoke. It is rear wheel and you can add all wheel drive. I have a 2013 and that was what I was told were the options.
i like audis but i have to agree with you. the base a4s have FWD and a CVT! and the quattro models are at least 42k.
and i guess you're perfect at everything you do ?
have a look at his other videos and it's evident he has a lot of experience in automotive journalism.
It's rear wheel drive or all wheel drive... not front wheel drive
Umm the length shows the same @ :50sec.
That's funny looking. I can picture my Auntie driving this
x drive means 4wheel drive, s drive means rwd
I would rather have that Disco at 1:09
It's rear wheel drive... Not front.
@Michael Leibowitz Yes, I would have the 1 series because there was room for a sub 3 series coupe, and the 1 series M is badass. But, honestly the X1 is the answer to a question no one asked.
Sort of looks like the Dodge Magnum if you all remember from 2005 to 2006. Chrysler had to discontinue that vehicle because of poor sales.
I think bmw sold 750,000 of these x1 around the world
There's no way it's its front wheel drive its a BMW!
PLEASE REVIEW THE 2013 TOYOTA VENZA V6!!!!! Its newly refreshed and alottrt better
Yeah I know, that's what I was trying to say.
It’s not front wheel drive in this year. It’s x drive or s drive rear wheel drive buddy
Putting your hand near the fan when the car is running is not a smart idea.
the X1 is RWD.
Yes and no.
You have a xdrive blw x1 and a sdrive.
Xdrive is 4x4 and sdrive is only RWD.
karel Gevaert ok, that's splitting hairs. if we want to be jerks about it, then i'll tell you that even an xDrive is RWD. it is a RWD platform and the AWD version, while it can send power to the front wheels will inherently run the read wheels. also, the xDrive system cannot send all of the power to the front wheels...again, it is essentially RWD.
@@Cameravastleggers the reviewer said fwd when it's isn't in any way

When did BMW start making FWD cars???? I think Cooley got that wrong.
The X1 can provide you some effective forearm workout!
LOL! cup holder LOL! Europeans are still not getting how important a cup holder is for Americans. What would you expect from those who rely on public transportation to commute and live in pocket size countries.
Front wheel drive or All wheel drive? Cooley you're losing your game! Get your drivetrains together! This is a BMW!
fine
Just give us a damn wagon! That thing looks busted.
he missed X1 in the title
I'll keep my challenger thanks....
NO OFF ROADING with this thing
The extra 10" probably has more to do with BMW not wanting to re engineer the crumple zones. Remember, this is a recycled platform.
No it's for weight balance.
looks like a 5 door without the hot hatch look or performance.
the incredibly high fog lights look stupid
nice
I am so confused.
He does NOT have an iPhone
Where the fuck did I say the i6 version doesn't need not sit further back to benefit the weight distribution? WHERE? It's deemed by BMW to be good enough with the i6, it just happens to be better with the i4 for packaging reasons. I don't need you to re-explain what I've just said clearly.
So, don't please.
In the words of Jeremy Clarkson, " BMW X1 isn't just bad, its rubbish".
That is all, now go watch some Harlem Shake videos.
Sport Utility Wagon. Duh.
I don't care much for modern fuel efficiency tricks, if I had the money I'd swap the motor for an old fashioned 3.0lt v8, sadly I don't...
Please can you help me guys about X1 BMW 28
that awkward moment when audis are the same price as bmw..... and i have a bmw and i don't scream: HEY! Look at my expensive car! btw its a $75,000 2013 x5 lola
1:01 Neither....*sunglasses*......it's a swaggon. YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a wagon.
WTF, it has AWD or RWD, not FWD!
AM I paying a lot for nothing...guess i should have watch this video before purchasing this car ugh. mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Small SUV no way in hell a wagon
Wagon
better than the subaru outback that all white people drive
X1...aka. stop gap..
for a 2013 car, this is way too outdated
ITS A SWAGON
Swagon O.o
Swagon
or you could spend less and get a better hatchback, Ford Focus ST, Subaru WRX.
Front Wheel Drive! Are you kidding! In a bmw... yeah right.
Not this X1
i am tired of this damn commercial before every video!
I love this guy!
Swagon.
no
Most of the Audis are slow. All they do is look nice. The fast ones are overpriced for the performance you get.
Android is dumbest in 2013? - bumbest statement i ever heard, stay in automobile buddy, dnt make statement about softwares , coz u r insulting urself:) bdw nice video!
Go drive a 1-Series M, and get back to me. :-)
ra magaria to
I'm getting tired of the same design. Never anything substantially new!
Grudge against Entry level BMWs much?
Thank God, you don't run BMW...because, if you did, we wouldn't have the 1-Series.
