I realize that the video was made in early 2013. Now, everyone should know that the X1 competes head-to-head with Audi's Q3, Mercedes GLA, and Infiniti EX35, EX37.
It was a toss-up between the X3 and the X1 but after watching your video and some more in-depth research, I settled on the X1. You're right, it's such a fun car to drive and I thank you for the great video.
I don't know about spending 48k on this. I did price out the turbo 4 with all wheel drive and fewer options and you can get away with it in the mid 30s so I wonder if that would make more sense.
The mere thought of Nathan wearing "short shorts" while sitting on a BMW X1's backseat will cause me to have nightmares for weeks to come! Other than that, another excellent review gentlemen!! I appreciate your knowledgeable discussions and your comparisons of the 'review' vehicles to others in the same category/class. Thanks guys!
I have the first X1 2.8xi with the 3lt engine and 258hp It's amazing car. It is not the best in quality but it's the best in driving. It's simple the best at that category.
About that 6 speed, I am amazed none of them noticed how slow the gears change. That transmission is soooo slow it makes me want to sell it and buy an X3 35i just to get that sweet 8-speed. Oh, and Nathan, this is not an opinion, I actually own one but I got mine with the 19" wheels option and cold weather pkg. Everything that you said about this bimmer is spot on.... except for the bitter sweet ultra slow tranny. Can't wait for VR Tuning to do a re-flash and make mine do 50% faster shifts! Other than the tranny? This is an awesome super fun fast paced ultra cool decent sized SAV! If you got the money for the extra power... DO IT! It'll be worth your money and give you lots of Smiles Per Gallon! Guys, thanks for such a great detailed review in THIS model in particular. There's very very few reviews on the X-Drive35i and I think it deserves a little more attention and a little more respect. Keep up the good work and looking forward in hearing more about BMW product reviews from TFalcars.
Hi Gary, I would get Evoque over the X1 as it is better equipped for snow, off road drives and you get more for the money. Roman likes the GLK. Both of us feel that the X1 is too pricey. Thanks for watching!
Infiniti Invented this segment with their EX35. Got to love how editors used to complain about the size of the EX how it was too small and now almost every brand has a similar car. A lot people don't want suv's or large crossovers. A lot people want an entry level Car size maneuverability with ground clearance and higer seating position. That's exactly why this segment is popular. My wife loves this segment. Perfect fit for her. X1 Q3 qx50 GLA NX200t And more to come. This segment is strong.
Hi Giorgio! Yes, the ground clearance is moderately usable. The problem is, the nose is too long and the approach angle is too shallow. I scrape leaving steep driveways - so rocks over five inches would get caught. Our off road trail needs at least another inch of ground clearance. Thanks for watching!
Last time I checked BMW's website, the xdrive35i X1 costs about 38.5k; that's a huge jump from your claims about the X1 being 49k as tested. Is that just because the one in the video includes a lot of packages?
The X1 that has the Turbo I-4 that's in the X3, 328i, even the 528i, is called the X1 28i (with rear or all-wheel drive). What's with the numbering, BMW? Why is it 28i when it's a 2.0L engine, 35i for the 3.0 I-6 engine, and 50i for the 4.4L V-8. Come on, BMW get with the times.
Yeah i would go with the Volvo XC60 T6AWD !! More stylish, more roomy, a little bit more powerful, the BMW is a 3.5L and the Volvo is a 3.0L but they're both Turbo charged, Twin Scroll engines, 300BHP for the BMW and 304 for the Volvo or 325 if you go for the R-DESIGN model :) Am i right ?
It depends on the video and vehicle. We write out all of the technical information, block each scene and occasionally script dialogue and movement. It truly depends on the circumstances. Thanks for watching!
I'll assume the interior parts bin items that carried over from the e90 3 series helped keep the cost down, e.g. the gauges, stereo, hvac controls, steering wheel, etc.
Roman and Nathan, wouldn't you say it competes more directly with the new Audi Allroad? They both came out within a few months of one another and they both have the ute qualities that young, small families might find attractive (big trunk, AWD, decent ground clearance etc). I know the powertrains aren't as similar but I think it has always been that way. i.e. when you look at the A4 and hold it next to the 3 series, yes they compete directly but BMW offers 4 engine choices whereas the Audi still only offers the same turbo 4. I have had mixed feelings about these videos but after almost a year of consistent watching I am pleased with the reviews and think that you both are doing a very good thing. As a 'car guy' and aspiring auto-journalist I found these videos to be somewhat basic as far as the information I received from watching. This is a good thing because not everyone is a car guy, in fact many people are very interested in automobiles but do not know much about them, that's where you guys step in by providing light hearted, funny and helpful reviews for a wider variety of people. Thanks for the great videos and best of luck!
Thanks for this review! I live in Germany and we don't get the X1 with the 35i engine, which I am very sad about. So I like it, if those who get it, do appreciate it.
Hi Sir, you been the best in reviews!! Which should be the besy buy from X1 vs 4 door Evoque vs GLS (dsl/gas) vs LR2 and why shoul i consider x3 being expensive. my height is 5 feet 9 inch. wife height 5 feet 2 inch, no kids, age 31 want to spend and own for 5 to 7 years. so far Evoque has impressed me the most, i like stylish. fullly loaded.
they probably dont want to say they compete bc one is fwd with 140hp and the other is rwd with 300hp but i would take the buick for less money and more standard equipment
I would probably go for the BMW, but to be honest I would rather buy a used X5 or X3 because I don't see much point in the X1 besides having basically a 3 series wagon with more head room
48k price is with a bunch of options that most people prolly wont get or dont need cause the Base price of a 35xdrive is 38k. I think most people that will get a X1 will prolly get the 2L turbo with the 8speed auto and 33 hwy mpg for people who want more performance the turbo 6 is there for them.
Hey Liam, thanks for that info. I've never owned a Beamer or Mercedes, but thanks for acknowledging how BMW and even a few Mercedes comes up with their models and numbers. I know the 63 means their 6.2L BiTurbo V8 in their C-Class high performance vehicle. The odd one is C250, which uses a 1.8L Turbo I-4. I'm used to the way uses Lexus and Infiniti on how their model names with their vehicles, and they match number with liter displacement (Lexus LS 460, Infiniti G37, etc),
Even with the Benz 250, consider the Lexus IS250 with their crappy V6, the power of the 4 banger+turbo 1.8 is equal (actually its more powerful) than a 2.5l 6 cylinder.
I am about to purchase a pre-owned and certified X1 xDrive35i with 6,500+ miles on the odometer. $35,500 out of door before taxes and fees with xLine, Ultimate Package, Lighting Package, Harman Kardon surround sound and upgraded interior leather and wood trim package. Only missing Cold Weather Package.
You mean you re-rest your case ;) You never mentioned anything about the X1's interior materials although I will agree with you that they do look a bit on the cheap side. I still don't get how the X1, X3 or X5 is underpowered though with the N54/N55 as that motor has a ton of torque and transmission is very well geared. Mercedes Benz vehicles are even bigger and heavier and they move quickly. Don't worry the Germans always make amazing things.
First review ive seen from you guys. have to say was terrific to watch :) you work great together and my brother is thinking of the Q3 or x1 so was nice to watch. sub'd (Y)
I agree that a CPO X5 would be the way to go but you said the X1 was underpowered which doesn't make any sense. 300HP isn't underpowered plus that exact same motor is used in the X5 35i. All BMWs drive good but in this case the X5 would make more sense. I still don't understand how the X1 is underpowered.
I agree -- the 2.5L V6 seems to be really anemic. In fact, Infiniti dumped it. (No G25). Toyota, and for that matter, Lexus believes in the philosophy about their powertrains is -- if it ain't broke don't fix it. I haven't seen Toyota put a turbo charger or supercharger in their engines in at least a decade. I don't think there is a turbocharged engine in their lineup. Correct me if I'm not accurate.
Wonderful city car. The steering is one of the best racks on a modern BMW (awd only). I love the base AWD car. No nav leather. It is a 34k car. This is a car. It is just a one 4 door with AWD. The 8 speed auto and the 4 cylinder are tons fast and lighter than the 6. With better fuel economy also. If I were to get one that is the way I would go. For those that are not stuck on BMW I would try the all new 15 WRX before you by an X1.
300HP isn't under-powered especially when that same motor is very torquey as well. BTW this is the same motor in a X5 35i so I'm puzzled as to why you'd knock an X1 but not the X5...
Even after all these years, I still think this is the best small SUV, followed by the new XC40, and the new X1’s distant brother, the Countryman. Definitely wanting one of these X1 xDrive35i cars now, but CPOs are quickly disappearing, so I gotta be quick!
I love your videos! i was wandering Who not going of road, it's Just 7 mm less in ground clearance than the x3(18 vs 25 cm), which si more than the Audi allroad..
for the X3: 300hp for 4222lbs is a lot of fat to haul around. True, the same engine is used in the less expensive X5 V6, but my argument was not about comparing power. My argument was about the quality of fit and finish between X3 and X5. Yes, I did say that the X3 is underpower, but for itself, not for comparing with the X5. the X5 V6 is even more underpower since it has more fat to haul around. I rest my case.
How can u guys name all the cars that is a direction competition to the car and forget the ex37/qx50??!! The infiniti is in my opinion the perfect competition for the x1! In fact would love to see a mash up of the 2! Both has about the same torque n hp...
i dont really understand why they introduved this car. its nice but as a CUV the back is pretty small and the fact its over 40K and the windows dont come tinted is pretty cheap. its japanese competetetors like infiniti and acura make use of 48K WAY nicer.
328i just means it's got the power of a comparable 2.8l engine. With the turbos it does make sense, and the market would much rather have a "328" than a "320" even if nothing is altered....it's all perception of size.
When you compare brands at the end of your test to buy/lease/forget, please remember you are naming non German cars as in Mustang, WRX and Volvo. German cars are like German beer. Give me a regular brewed German beer over the most fancy American/domestic beer you can market. You can fool people with marketing but bottom line is BMW is the ultimate driving machine. And you drive cars. Case closed.
Because the X5 is built with better quality. Better fit and finish. Most important, it's bigger that 5 adults can actually fit. With the price of the X1 and X5 pretty much the same, it would make way more sense to get the X5 since it will have a better resale value. I rest my case.
Cars that maybe comparable are the Range Rover évoque, Audi A3, Infiniti EX37/ QX50, Acura RDX, GLK. $48k is a lot of cash there's so much that you can get for that kind of money
You obviously haven't driven one. I have. The 2.0t is very quick with a 0-60 of 6.2, and the 3.0t is a rocket at just a tick over 5 seconds to 60. How much faster do you need to go?............or as we say in 'Merica.....C'Mon Man!
I love Bmw but i mean how you guys can say that it as a nice interior i mean theres nothing look at the panel of this car lol but ! i got to say it is pretty nice under the hood anyways its just my opinion not judging or anything anyways you guys do realy good car reviews continue ! :)
One of the reviewers prefers the antiquated 6-speed just because of the shift lever? They lost me at that point. I guess their education level isn't high enough to figure out the 8-speed lever. BTW, the 8-speed comes with the 28i.
The X1 xDrive35i does exist! i dont know where you live but we get 3 versiont here, the 28i sDrive and xDrive and the top of the line 35i xDrive... go to the bmw site if you dont belive me.
I like the x1. Not much more than the base car. The 240 Hp rwd base x1 with just a few options is a good deal for a young family. With no real competition in the low 30's rang. For me a lovely 328 x3 well equipped for 42k is a better choice.
I feel like these guys always have more rear-seat legroom issues than other reviewers - are they really tall? (I'm not good at gauging height via video) Perhaps it's also because I'm Asian and I never carry anyone over 5'8" haha
All I see is an old 3 series wagon raised couple of inches and given a little more headroom. PLUS, this generation has been out in europe for a while...why buy one now when it should have a make over in the next year or 2? Plus I rather get a Buick Encore, not as sporty but its a ground up new car, not sumin thats been out just not here kind of deal and just about the same space in a shorter car...
then your losing stuff that others give for standard. germany's pricing in general but i shouldent have to pay an extra thousand on a Q5 just to get bluetooth. i shouldent be spending 50K on an X5 and the windows still not being tinted. mini cooper has the same problem. they make the best driving cars but they take advantage with that by the price sticker and i believe BMW has lost their way a little. the new 3 series is nothing like my aunt's classic to drive...
Least expensive BMW??????? You have to be kidding me! I paid almost 50,000 for a BMW X1 35i M sport with technology package, Premium package and heated seats. Add to that the 2,500 for M sport, 550 for paint color, shipping cost of arount 895, tax etc., etc.
Just bought one of these bad boys with 62k miles. Thanks for the video. It helped with the decision making ✌️
How has it been since
@@alexrojo2496 love it. Only needed regular maintenence and it's fun to drive. I got a 2015 btw.

I love Bmw but i mean how you guys can say that it as a nice interior i mean theres nothing look at the panel of this car lol but ! i got to say it is pretty nice under the hood anyways its just my opinion not judging or anything anyways you guys do realy good car reviews continue ! :)
Nobody wanted to see the X1 loaded up to 48k. People wanted to see the X1 at the 31k price point. Come on..
One of the reviewers prefers the antiquated 6-speed just because of the shift lever? They lost me at that point. I guess their education level isn't high enough to figure out the 8-speed lever. BTW, the 8-speed comes with the 28i.
Oh it is ? :) Ok well Even better for the Volvo then, i guess :) Which one would you pick ?
The X1 xDrive35i does exist! i dont know where you live but we get 3 versiont here, the 28i sDrive and xDrive and the top of the line 35i xDrive... go to the bmw site if you dont belive me.
Credit and lease. Back in 2010 over 60% BMW's in USA were leased!
A car of this size with a big engine must be insanely fast
I like the x1. Not much more than the base car. The 240 Hp rwd base x1 with just a few options is a good deal for a young family. With no real competition in the low 30's rang. For me a lovely 328 x3 well equipped for 42k is a better choice.
If you hate it so much then why did you get it?
И почему нас не продавался такой мотор с X1 .... Эх...
i thought it was ugly in media but in person I really like it
You bring good points.
I'd buy it, spend a bit more cash and have a 400hp, 400lb-fb small car. Would do 0-60 in the 4 seconds range.
It competes with the Audi All-Road. and the Mercedes GLK to some extent
i think it needs dual exhaust
YES! this car looks like the infinity suv, shiet.. but better looking. (the X1)
2:40 - Dear lord, please never wear short-shorts....
lmao
The BMW is a 3.0L as well
then your losing stuff that others give for standard. germany's pricing in general but i shouldent have to pay an extra thousand on a Q5 just to get bluetooth. i shouldent be spending 50K on an X5 and the windows still not being tinted. mini cooper has the same problem. they make the best driving cars but they take advantage with that by the price sticker and i believe BMW has lost their way a little. the new 3 series is nothing like my aunt's classic to drive...
I would get the ford edge sport
Least expensive BMW??????? You have to be kidding me! I paid almost 50,000 for a BMW X1 35i M sport with technology package, Premium package and heated seats. Add to that the 2,500 for M sport, 550 for paint color, shipping cost of arount 895, tax etc., etc.
I'm not sure what the point of this car is. Not good off-road, no space in the back and a pretty small boot. Makes no sense to me really :/
