Thanks for the Video, changed out my Alternator 2006 E65.. bought it used on eBay for 70.00 removal and installation took 2.5 hours.. was getting 10volts ,now getting 14.5 volts with AC on .👌

Excellent info and the clear institutions. I will give it a go sometime. Yes 11.8 volts does sound too low for a battery in regular use. The voltage while driving is determined by the power module which regulates charge to save fuel. My idrive starts to chatter and spin a bit if my battery gets low. They say only to use an AGM type battery.
With the engine running, the reading you are seeing is that of the alternator, engine off is the battery. Usually with the engine off, batter voltage of 11.8-12.2volts is good to go, especially if you had some interior lights and things on. I'm new to BMWs, but 13.8-14.4 volts with the engine running is usually good generally speaking. It depends on both engine speed and how many electrical components are drawing current. Sitting at 14ish volts under 2k RPM at night (exterior+interior lights alone are significant draw) seems reasonable to me...though I also understand that newer BMWs come with pretty beefy alternators. (I think I read my E90 alt is rated around 150 amps continuous/180 peak, 75%-100% more than my old Nissan). If you run the headlights and the ac on high and are still in the high 13 volts range I would say your charging system is fine.

yes it is the last five numbers added up. The code counter goes to 45. which makes sense as 9*5=45. This would be the largest possible code. Cheers for the video. I am now able to see the water temp on the engine.

Thanks for the awesome info like always. So I took my 745 to get the dreadful alternator gasket fixed and the battery died out on them. Anywho now I got the red air bag light on. I'm wondering if that's what caused it. How do I turn off the air bag light off ? Lmk please. Thanks

AGM's charge at about 14.3v, lead acid batteries are fine at 13.6v ish. My boat has 5 AGM deep charge batteries and my regulator is set for 14.7v which it never gets to due to the load. But its a great video.

Just a quick question, if your voltage is minimum 11.8V like the video (I didn't do my test yet) should be ok? Because I have an AGM battery, looks new but as soon as I leave the car off but key on and radio on it keeps showing please recharge battery. I wonder if it needs to be registered or what happens.

Just one point I imagine your Vin code is 0????
ie when you add your last 4 digits together it's
the same as adding the last 5 digits. For those
whose vin code doesn't have a ZERO as the 5th
from last digit, you must add the last 5 DIGITS to
unlock

Don't forgett you must add all numbers to get the code. In my case they were 5, not only four. It worked. I must see my alternator. It's below 12 volts even with motor running

Hi Chris,I like your video. They are very detailed. You've helped me a lot. I was trying to check the voltage and when I reset trying to reset the code I do exactly as you're saying and my Vin number add up to 10 and I go to 10 and then the screen disappeared. I held down for a few seconds then come back and it still locked. Please help
First, my 03 requires me to add the last 5 numbers in my vin as the code. Second, an AGM battery should not be charged at more than 14.8 volts. I've read that over 14.8 volts you'll fry an AGM and destroy the battery. Third, all that said............I enjoy your series and have benefited from your video's. Thanks bunches.
Dude, thanks for sharing al your knowledge, I have an 03 745i and I'm burning oil, blue smoke after being in idle. Anyway, it's a good idea to check every 2 days my oil level, I can't monitor it like you can via I drive, but, in this video, when are going to access the hidden menu, way before the 10 seconds, it appears a first menu, in that menú is reads something like ENG OIL ... And then some readings? Is that maybe a measurement of oil level? Thanks in advance. @diysavecash

Looks like from the menu, there is a lot we can do. I need to research more for other options.... and I was hoping if the engine coolant temperature can be shown?

Do you which control module would be bad if new battery new alternator and still doing it and when I put tester on keeps coming up with voltage regulator failed??
I have a 06 750i my battery keeps dying after I use the car and park it for a couple of min I have to jump start the car and it work for some days and it would do the same thing again I check the alternator and works good puts out 14.5 running and ones I turn the car off my battery drops to 12.5 but then it would drop to 12.3 and like I say it would drain my battery please help...

I'd like to know if there is way that I could upgrade my system,radio,settings etc as some of the options doesn't work when I click on them.
And I have one more question regarding my radio...My radio is working but when I look for stations it doesn't find any,only if I look manually. What is annoying is that radio plays fine while I'm not moving but when I do , sound is going up and down like someone would play with volume control up and down ,up and down constantly.. Any ideas? Can I reset it all?!

+DIY I'm having trouble with my I drive screen it just shows BMW. Every now and then the screen boots up but nothing responds when I click my knob. I get no chime,radio or cd player not responding either can you help me please I have a 2003 BMW 745I sport!

You should be have minimal 14 mv car is working fine if not then start problems with your dynamic driver and gearbox

I guess this comment is too late to really be useful. But for the record, a lead acid battery should never exceed 14.4 volts... Generally while charging 14.2 - 14.4 volts are considered the fully charged voltage. I'm not a battery or BMW expert. But I have worked a lot with cars and to me your battery voltage looks perfectly acceptable.

After doing some research folks are on the fence about AGM battery's some folks say only get AGM battery's and others say Walmart type battery's are fine as long as the cold cranking amps etc are the same, and it looks the same with the same size, to be honest I'm going to buy a walmart battery and give it a try, if you plan to keep your car for 10 years you might want to buy a AGM battery, there probably longer lasting. I'll make a video when I buy one.
DIYsavecash The charging system may over charge a lead acid battery the charging sequence for AGM is different than lead acid, keep a close eye on the water level.. it will boil off. The alternator is 180 amps, thats huge for a car most are around 100 amps.
Smart charging systems (pretty sure the E65 has one) have a millivolt shunt to measure the amount of charge going into and out of a battery to keep the charge level at a maximum.

Hi it's not the battery problem you have a problem with alternator I have same situation like you and I change my Battery and everything was the same I driving BMW garage and then testing alternated and told me your alternators done make enough electricity you have problem you alternator from BMW cost about £500 I buy from Euro parts I return my old one and get hundred pound cheaper so it's cost me £300
Swapped my module today with a new abs unit, all lights finally gone..disconnected battery before swapping

I bought a new module from Ebay by the seller "euroasiaparts" and it was $476 free shipping, to swap it out all i did was disconnect the battery, take out two screws holding the coolant tank in place, and to pull it out all you do is lift it up and there's a coolant sensor to remove by twisting off, then i set it aside on top of the engine bay, pop the clip holding the 30 pin connector in place with a flathead, remove the 6 torx screws holding the module in place, replace with the new one, put everything back together then reconnect the battery everything works perfectly fine...i have a little write up on bimmerfest just search "genc50"

Usually your supposed to recode the abs module at a dealer or indy but I think i didn't need recoding because I removed the battery so when the new module went in, the DME recoded the module for me (y)

I have replaced my alternator( with used) that gave me 10.x volts. Now all volts are 13.8v and all int lights are full brightly lit and car really feels powerful...but after driving 45 mins voltage slowly started dipping untill it reached 11.x.
The indie then replaced the voltage regulator and now it sits at 13.872 (13.9) with no load and 13.370 with all load i.e ac + full fan + headlights + front fog + rear fog lamps + interior lights on (door open).
IS THIS OK?
vehicle does not seem to be lacking voltage visibly...i.e no flickering...dimming etc.
How you getting on now 3 weeks later? When you say indie replaced voltage regulator ... Do you mean the Power Control Module in the boot under the fuses?
I have similar problem that two garages have failed to fix....
Previous owner must have had a problem, put a Lion battery (lead Acid) in. He obviously never registered the new battery and a few months down the line it is so confusing as to what is at fault.... Alternator? - pronounced good. PCM? - replaced. Battery - changed for BMW AGM and registered. But it died on me 3 days out of the indy.
So is it not charging? Or still not getting to the battery or is there some module draining the battery when I park it?

By Voltage Regulator i meant the one that contains the 2 carbon bushes touching the alternator copper rings. The VR is replaceable and is found directly on top of the alternator held by 3 nuts/bolts. BTW all good untill now..getting 3.9x v at idle at no load. With load 3.7x. Also i never registered my cheap KOREAN battery that i installed before 365+ days.🤓
Glad to hear you're sorted. Mine is an 06 E66 so must have AGM that must be registered, has a PCU but no IBS. It drove out of the repair shop on the new AGM but it can't have been charging while I drove as it died. I tried charging via jump terminals under the hood but after 40 hours CTEK MXS5.0 hadn't been able to push past stage 3 (bulk to 80%) [The charger is fine as the day before it had charged 07 e61 which had been left in sub-zero with the charger stuck for a month in the boot of the e66 in the repair shop].
Now, I have disconnected the AGM and after 4 hours it's into stage 4 absorption. Progress!
So, I am suspecting there is still something wrong with the PCU 9 132 581.
I will check the on-charge voltage when it gets to 100% and when taken off charge. ((Hopefully, 14.4 & 13.#ish))
I will load test the battery straight after to make sure it is good.
I will reconnect and go for a test drive measuring the voltage across the battery terminals, at a cigarette lighter and across the engine +/- terminals. ((Again hopefully 14.4 ish))
This may help me to figure out what is wrong.
Diy how you fix the traction controll ? I have problem With this.... IT was abs sensor ? Or ? Have you some idea ? Somethink more ? Battery voltage ? Abs modul ? Or ?
Pawel Mosakowski in my case it's the ABS module which is causing those 3 yellow lights to come on. I'm going to send mine away to get repaired by a pro, they are very complex to fix I wouldn't recommend it, this way you'll repair your same module and then put it back in so you don't have to re-program your car to a new module. I'm hopefully making a video of this soon.

Pawel Mosakowski i dont recommend buying a new one because they are all rebuilt its better getting one from the junk yard thats what i did. any other issue with this car i can inform you whats the problem and how to fix it

In my case its only tractioncontrol coming up in dashboard one Day i drove and just Come this shit i dont think at it is ABS modul becouse its working but if i put a max acceleration so i have wheelspinn... What du you think first? Sensor? Battery? And when i want to look for woltage i cant... Last 4 nummers in my LIA750 is 6091 but 16 doesnt work...

Its only the triangle with the arrow around, idrive till me : destabilization in acceleration and curves drive moderately bla bla bla... After 17.30PM Swedish time i can sent the Picture If u want but its only triangle nothing more its happend when i drove in sunday morning and then comes up. I have big problem with this in BMW dealer says if i can leave the car but i know when i leave the car only check cost me 300-400 USD... Reparation mayby doubble... mayby its not a big deal. ABS working i think mayby preassure sensor in ABS or some sensor, battery? I wana ask som have MORE expirience like You
yes if you see in the video I have the same thing top left yellow symbol. my ABS is also working fine it's just the module thats gone bad somehow.
