      Steve Largent is probably the most underrated player. Yes he made the Hall of Fame, but he is still relatively unknown. Led the NFL in receiving yards until Jerry Rice beat him. Was the reason Rice wanted number #80 Had arguably the greatest hands of all time. When Largent retired, he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). He was also in possession of a then-record streak of 177 consecutive regular-season games with a reception. He also holds the distinction as the first receiver in NFL history to achieve 100 touchdown receptions in his career.

    Greg Townsend got all those sacks because of Howie Long being double team and sometimes triple team it freed up Townsend to rush the passer but Greg Townsend was a great defensive end make no mistake about it with Howie Long being the Wildman and then throw in Lyle Alzado aggression with a short temper and you got one hell of a group on the defensive line

    The difference between Howie Long and other great Raiders is that he was as tough as any of them but he wasn't a head case. Howie always had class. Something that was blatantly lacking in other Raiders and fans as well. Case in point, the guy in this video with the Raider shield on his melon.

      There's a belief (untrue) you have to be a psycho to be a Raider. Not so. Long, Jim Plunkett, Art Shell, Mike Haynes, Daryl LaMonica, Tom Flores (probably others) were 'eagle scouts' Others like Matt Millen, Skip Thomas, Cliff Branch, Ken Stabler, Reggie Kinlaw, they were what's known as 'characters...with character.' Then there were the psychos, too numerous to mention. What I mean is the Raiders just wanted you to be yourself (WHATEVER that was) and then play your guts out on Sunday.

    • @imaginationworker9144

    Looking on his highlight i realize that Howie Long is a smart player, he utilize his arm to "throw" offensive linemen and Quarterback like in Judo or Jujitsu instead of "colliding" his body to his opponent in order to bring them down, no wonder he is one of the few players from the 80's who is the healthiest

In my family, he made my grandma a fan of the team (long before their move to Vegas, the area my grandparents live now; back then, they lived in New York) in his heyday not just because he was a great player, but because she had a crush on him, too!

    • @SuedeStonn
      @SuedeStonn 7 лет назад +2

      Old Man Willie played the majority of his days as a RAIDER so basically he was a RAIDER through and through. Mike Haynes played half his career with the Patriots and the second half with the RAIDERS so you could go either way. A last example would be Jerry Rice, he would be considered as a 49er despite his 3 or so years as a RAIDER (3 excellent years, but he wasn't a 'long time' RAIDER that you would compare with other 'long time' RAIDERS).

    I'm probably in the minority but I'd call Howie Long the #1 RAIDER player in team history. From his rookie season to his final game Long was a beast, and everyone knew it. He was relentless, a pass rushing DL that could play NT and the run with the best of them. IMO only a handful of guys, like Joe Greene and Reggie White, are ahead of Long... and not by much.

      into a power house. He led them to a 13-1 record and a Super Bowl berth in 1967, a 12-2 record in 1968 ( lost to Jets
      in the Playoffs, and went 12-1-1 in 1969 losing to K.C. in the Playoffs. That 36-4-1 W/L mark is still the best 3 year

    In '85, after his game against the Bears, while walking to their cars he confessed to Lyle Alzado that he hadn't been SO beat-up in a game...since grade school. That's the very contest were, out of frustration, he began to cry...in the 3 rd. quarter.
