  • CABLE TIES TESTED: Thomas & Betts, Panduit, Gardner Bender, ACT, Store House (Harbor Freight) and Strong Ties. Stainless Steel cable ties tested: HYCC, Gardner Bender and Store House (Harbor Freight). I purchased the cable ties tested over a year ago and split up the cable ties into 2 groups. Group 1 did not experience sunlight (ultraviolet). Group 2 did experience sunlight for the past year. UV exposure did have a big impact on the cable ties. To add some fun to the testing, the zip ties along with JB Weld were used to hold a cylinder head onto an engine without using cylinder head bolts to see how long the engine would run. Also, the strongest stainless steel cable tie was tested to see if just 1 cable tie would support the weight of a small pickup truck. Thanks again and best regards, Todd

    Great follow-up. Just one note on your results: If you look at 7:31, the failure mode suggests that the stainless ties would have held even more weight if they were wrapped tightly around something... the bottoms would not have folded out, and the mechanisms would therefore have held on longer. I think that could be a valuable lesson for those who use stainless ties!

      There are five characteristics of a material. Strength,Hardness, Brittleness, Ductility, and Toughness. Radiation from the sun causes materials to become brittle at the same time the are Harder and Stronger however when Brittle Fracture occurs it is more violent. Ductility and Toughness are inversely proportional so mode of failure can also change. Hope this helps.

      @Fix_It_Again_Tony 4 года назад +1

      @@hicaltv4648 I was thinking along the same lines. It's like steel. You can make carbon steel very hard and it's strength will increase, but at some point it becomes so brittle it is no longer useful.

      I would find it useful to know how the 1 year UV exposure was applied. Were they laid outside on some kind of surface, such as metal or wood. Bunched in the original bag or individually separated. In Arizona or Illinois. Also, what kind of oxidizer was used on the stainless steel tests. Chlorine bleach e.g. "straight", 2 cups/gal.H20, or some other oxidizer.

      The UV can't penetrate at least the black zip ties, so it does a sort of case hardening where the skin of the ziptie is hard but the core is still mostly its original pliable plastic. Eventually air would get to the inside of the plastic as well and damage it, but it'll get stronger before failing completely.

I had a bag of zip ties which would fail when you tied them, the latch would break. I added a bit of water to the bag and tried them again a month later. No more breaking! I now add a bit of water to my plastic container of tie wraps.

      I learned the same thing and boy does it make a difference. I bet the moisture content has more to do with the strength of these ties than the UV exposure.
      Ties in the middle of winter are always more brittle due to the dry air. Summer humidity strengthened some of these.

      Picking up the truck from the back end's probably lighter than trying to lift it from the front since what's where the bulk of the weight is likely to be due to the engine and everything else. Still, if you had a tractor handy, some chains, and a steel tie but no car jacks, I suppose it'd be a valid way to change your back tires?

      @@ProjectFarmIts very rare for me to think of making any changes to your testing. More often you go above and beyond. However, I would love to see the stainless installed with the locking mechanism bearing up against a surface. The locking mechanism failed because it was allowed to spread open. The lifting of the truck showed that even through it has additional loops it confirms "my" suspicion.
      The failure of the uv exposed black ties was interesting. Never would have guess that.
      I would be interesting to see the the load capability with the zip tie in different positions. It may not make a big difference with the plastic but it should make a substantial difference with the stainless. Anyway, love you work.

    I’ve been using “rugged- perfect for winter” plastic ties on my sailboat winter cover for four years. It secures a skeleton of plastic electrical conduit to the boat, with a fitted fabric cover over it. It sits beside the shore of Lake Ontario, covered in snow, and exposed to howling icy winds all winter. Every year, I’d come back, find broken pipes and broken zip ties. The snow would fill in the depression and start to collapse the cover. I’d check it every week and make several repairs every winter, which was a huge pain. I always wondered if it was the zip ties or pipes that were failing. After seeing Project Farm, this year I switched to the metal zip ties he tested. The result? As of yesterday, no breaks, no damage, zero issues. I taped over each metal tie to keep the razor edges from slicing through the cover. Thank you Project Farm! After seeing this, I decided to support you on Patreon - you put a lot of time, money, and effort into your videos. Lance in Canada

      @@goldeneaglearbor614 I did read once that if you go LED headlights and if bulbs share a capsule then you need to replace both bulbs as the LED bulb isn't made to last through the heat of a Halogen fixture. Also, read that this isn't good if you live in a state with snow. LED apparently won't melt ice like how regular bulbs do.

      In my experience the brighter more expensive bulbs blow out WAY faster than the standard bulbs recommend by your vehicles manufacturer. I bought a really nice and bright pair of bulbs a few years back, the brightness standard bulbs you can buy and they both blew out within a year, and my brother had the same experience.

      I can help answer the cold question... every brand I have used for long haul trucking has failed miserably below 20°, and I spend a lot of time in the U P of Michigan, northern Ohio, Indiana during the winter. Many break at the locking mechanism teeth in extreme cold. I only use the 250lb rated ties from CabletiesPlus now, but they are pricey at 4.84 each but they keep our snap binder handles in place much better than a wrapped bungee cord.

      TheRoadhammer379 i have used chain binders that have a ring that slides onto the binder handle when its closed to keep it from opening especially with vibration and shock I used them off shore binding 34” dia pipe onto tanks to tow for building beaches.

    I see you didn't attempt to create a cold environment. That's when they really struggle. In the winter when it's no where near -40 they will fail. The cold is the real test . The metal ties are best but honestly some of the things your installing won't be safe with metal it will cause a grounding issue but that's a different story. Let's see cold weather use this Winter so people can see how big of a pain in the ass these things can be. But that said they are a good send to anyone needing a quick fix!

    I wonder if the increase in load seen with some of the UV exposed ones was due to a change in moisture content and not from UV itself. Nylon is known to vary in strength significantly with it's moisture content so if they spent that year in a very dry area that could have lead to the change

    • @John_Ridley
      @John_Ridley 4 года назад +1

      Radiation exposure can cause cross linking in plastics, making them stronger. PEX tubing is exposed to ionizing radiation during manufacture for instance. But prolonged exposure will cause breakdown of the chains so eventually they will become brittle.

    I've used Harbor Freight zip ties for years and always outside. The largest white ones are the ones I use mostly for hanging wired lights from my deck roof. The frame is steel so I can't use nails or staples. Anyway, since I use them outdoors they are exposed to more heat than direct sunlight. I've found that they get brittle and snap after a couple of years and have to be replaced. The cable ties you've tested were exposed to direct sunlight but have you tested them in high heat exposure under load? If not I'd like to see what your results would be. I'm subscribed and watch every one of your videos as they are more informative than any I've ever seen anywhere else. Thank you for being so thorough!
