Animus magic being near omnipotent is just too much of a problem for writing for it, too, so often it easily runs into these problems. If I had been the mind to conceive animus magic, then I would restrict it to enchanting objects with supernatural properties, with the effectiveness and complexity of the spell dependent on the brilliance of the user. It would not be able to alter the minds of dragons or any living being, and an animus could only give the power by passing to a dragon willingly. Also, perhaps the number of big or highly complex spells would rely on the depths of the user's stamina. Living beings wouldn't be able to be directly enchanted, only through contact with bewitched objects.

Ok I might be wrong here, but like the icewings SHOULD still have magic by logic, at a point in Darkstalker: legends, Clearsight says something about not killing queen diamond or snowfox, the queen niece and only heir left, and that she was going to have a egg some years later and that she was not likely to continue the war going on then. So animus power is supposed to be still in the royal bloodline. This might be a plot hole though, Tui has likely forgotten about it but that’s ok

A couple years ago, I made up a "solution" for this inconsistency. My answer for this is simply, Snowfox was adopted, probably by one of Diamonds kinder-hearted, more overlooked brothers. If she was adopted by a brother, it would allow her to be a legitimate part of the royal family, without carrying the animus gene.

    • @midnight_creature
      @midnight_creature 3 месяца назад

I don't know if this applies to the Icewings but in the real world many royal family lines are VERY inbred, and inbreeding opens up more chances for "bad" mutations and disabilities, so that could explain the slow dwindling of the magical genes.

I've got a strange animi related question: If animus magic can do anything, why didn't Darkstalker wish to go back to the day that Clearsight put him to sleep? Why not wish for time travel? We know that Darkstalker is really smart, imagining flying to the moon, and enchanting living objects, etc... So if you know you cant bring people back to life, why not try to change the present by going to the past?

I wonder if this is just a situation of "Could I do that?? No - why would that even work?" If I recall, Turtle himself wasn't even sure he could do it, so maybe Diamond had that same line of logic (plus other animi); surely this great power can't just be handed over to someone else? Sure, you can enchant someone to do something, but the concept of giving them the same powers probably didn't really click.
Though animus magic is a huge issue in the story because of how vague it is in how it actually works. I wonder how they originally got the powers to - maybe they could make a legends book about the animus.

I'm just going to say that animus magic should have stayed a minor plot point, lol. Making it the main focus really showed how little Tui had actually thought out the magic system. It was a cool thing in arc I because no one in the main cast or villains had it and the only 2 we knew about were Anemone and Stonemover who had their lives messed up because of it.
Personally, if animus magic was going to become a main stay, then anumus dragons shouldn't be able to make other dragons animus. This would have allowed Turtle to once again blame himself for something he didn't actually do (The egg being destroyed and Anemone becoming an animus). It would have been neat for him to think he was the reason Anemone fell down that dark path when in reality, it was how she was raised in such isolation and having to deal with Whirlpool, letting Turtle be the first dragon to really break her out of that train of thought.

@Dogloverlikesdoge I love wings of fire the characters, not the magic system xD it feels like Tui didn't intend for it to be a main focus until near the end of arc I and she didn't set it up enough for it to not feel poorly designed. To be honest, I don't even care how it was taken out. I just wanted it out of the series xD I much preferred when animus objects were all we really had to work with. Objects made from magic inaccessible to modern dragons so each one is highly precious.

    • @spottedtime
      @spottedtime 3 месяца назад +1

@@Dogloverlikesdogedefinitely, I felt like it was WAY too over powered. I’m not sure Tui actually thought through with the magic system.
You guys are also forgetting that animus magic could enchant anything to do anything. Like how Darkstalker made a bracelet(I think) to be able to bring anything that the dragon draws, to life (which did come in handy, but who knows what could have happened if the wrong dragon got that enchanted item). Another two animus dragon literally built 2 entire castles (an IceWing and a SeaWing). Darkstalker also enchanted a wooden statue to absorb another dragon inside of it. Anemone enchanted bracelets to create a thunderstorm, which almost got out of hand when Qibli had the bracelets.
I wish animus magic was only limited to just moving objects around.

    • @scytherider2
      @scytherider2 2 месяца назад

Turtle literally ruined the entire series.
Tui was having writer's block trying to write Turtle's book. He had one interesting character trait (being an animus main character) and one interesting twist (he made Anemone into an animus). Tui found out the hard way that didn't carry him as a character, and she was having massive trouble trying to write book 9 on a deadline. And that's pretty obvious while reading the book that he's just a dull character, he's defined by his cowardice and inability to do anything, so he just watches from the shadows as other characters do things.
So Turtle being a terrible character is the whole reason why Darkstalker's book got written. Turtle couldn't carry his own book, so Darkstalker had to carry it. And while Darkstalker's book is pretty much the best book in the series, it never should have been written. It took what was supposed to be a 1-dimensional villain and turned him into a 5-dimensional black hole character, made him way too deep and too complex and too sympathetic. It also fleshed out the animus magic system too deeply, as well as throwing out its one limiting factor (Oh, it doesn't actually sap your soul after all! You just naturally become a sociopath if you exercise too much power!)
So in the end you were left with a magic system that was too open-ended and limitless, such that it basically had to be purged from the universe in season 3. All because Tui learned the hard way that you can't make an interesting book out of a boring character.

And he still didn’t go insane, aside from becoming a little bit mean or something? I don’t think it’s very clear what happened to him, or maybe i just don’t remember very well.
So considering those two things, why wouldn’t they have Stonemover make the volcano a better place to live? He could have done that in an instant. And it wouldn’t have costed much of his soul as we’ve seen before.

    • @cathygrandstaff1957
      @cathygrandstaff1957 3 месяца назад +1

Maybe because anything they did would only have been a temporary fix. The core problem was the volcano was becoming active and was going to erupt sooner or later. Maybe Stonemover could have made it go dormant but the geological forces would still be moving it towards erupting.
The thing I wonder is why the nightwings gave up their abilities by intentionally avoiding hatching their eggs under the moonlight. It doesn’t make much sense to give up their tribe’s greatest gifts, especially since the foresight seems like it would be useful for finding out if Darkstalker was returning. Between that and the rainwing venom (widely known hazard in Darkstalker’s time, completely forgotten outside the rainwing tribe by the present) I seriously wonder if the dragons just do not record anything.

I wonder what exactly happened that led to the Icewings creating their 'one spell only' law. It had to be something pretty bad to not only warrant it being made in the first place, but more so for it to be kept presumably thousands of years later... at least officially. Like, so ingrained into their culture that not even Queen Diamond would dare admit to casting several more spells. Similarly, what happened in the Sky Kingdom for them to forego any possible advantage magic might give them and instead enforce a 'kill on sight' law? They had this even before the Albatross massacre.
Presumably these sorts of horror stories would be why nobody thought to use their animus magic to make more animus dragons, or if they did they quickly thought of something else instead.

Animus magic itself is a massive plot hole. As much as I love this series, Tui Sutherland did a a poor job with her magic system. Specifically, there are no meta rules in place to define how magic works and how it limits their abilities. I originally liked the "it corrupts your soul" angle that seemed to be the limiter: The more you use it, or the stronger the spell, the more your soul is corrupted until your soul is completely rotted. But that doesn't seem to be the case now. They can do anything with no penalty or consequence. So are animus dragons just literal gods?

This is just my interpretation, but I believe Animus magic being OP is why Turtle is barely allowed to do anything narrativly.
My evidence: in Book 6 he is the Winglet member Moon interacts with the least, as she can't even read his thoughts and they have only one or two actual conversations that isn't small talk.
In Book 7 literally the first thing Winter does is tell Turtle to return to the Academy (essentially "go home") and he concedes without a fight, effectively writing him out of the book entirely.
In Book 8 Peril becomes friends with him (mostly because Clay told her to) and this is the first time we the readers actually start learning about who he is as a character, though he's still being pretty mysterious. The minute it's revealed Turtle has powers Peril runs off to sulk and this is where Chameleon finds her and takes her to Scarlet. Then after Scarlet dies the rest of the cast showes up again and Turtle basically snaps his fingers and Chameleon is taken care of.
Book 9, Turtle's POV, has him hiding from Darkstalker so he can't use his powers unless it's absolutely necessary, which means he spends his book hiding under an invisibility cloak so to speak and doing almost nothing to effect the plot until the very end, afterwards Darkstalker strips his magic away anyway.
His last appearance is in Book 10, where he spends most the story locked up and even after he's freed and his powers restored it's Anemone who ends up doing most of the spell casting.
TL;DR the way I've interpreted it, it seems like Tui thought "Oh it'd be cool to make one of my new protagonists an animus" and then realized as she was writing the story how many hoops she had to jump through just so Turtle couldn't snap his fingers and resolve the conflict immediately (kinda like he does in Book 8). Despite his potential, Turtle not being allowed to do much is why he feels kinda basic when compared to the series's other protagonists.

this isn't really a Plothole...why WOULD Diamond create other dragons that could potentially be a threat to her?
Diamond WANTS to be the only one with power, and have control over those with power, as shown with Arctic.
so why would she go out of her way to create more beings that are just as powerful as she is, that maybe someday think: hey, we could totally overthrow her!
I mean in general Tui didn't handle Animus magic that well... sure the Characterconflict it caused was amazing, and that's what tui is good at, Writing characters, but the actual magic itself....
You CANT just say : "oh yeah this magic can just do anything" in your story. you NEED rules and limitations in your magicsystem, otherwise you just write yourself into a corner, and Tui did exactly that with Darkstalker.
obviously the focus of the magic IS to create conflict in a Character, that's WHY its designed the way it is, but the second you start focusing on the magic as a major Plot point, and not just as a character trait, you NEED those rules in place to tell the reader what the stakes are.

It's also what kind of happened with Turtle, since if you look at his character as a whole he's not really allowed to do all that much by the narrative. Turtle's powers have like three or four moments in the limelight, and the rest of the time there's some arbitrary plot reason why he can't just snap his fingers and solve the current problem. Heck, Book 7 just up and writes him out of it entirely in the first three pages.

She wanted Arctic, even when she knew of his rebellious nature. As selfish as Diamond was, she was still focused on the future of the tribe, and the power the IceWings would hold. Family and prestige were important to them, so I doubt she wanted to be known as the queen who fumbled the tribe losing their powers. Knowing all that she did, she likely would have enchanted a dragon (who she gave animus powers) into obeying her forever after that

There are two reasons I can think of for this scenario:
    1. Nobody believed it could work. For the whole time, it was believed that animus dragons enchanted things by placing a sliver of their soul to whatever object to "animate" it. When it came to other living things, animus magic can me more thought of "hacking" into the creature's soul. And since animi can't raise the dead, it means that each soul is unique and cannot be replicated. So would an artificial animus still have the same power as an original? I guess Turtle just went with the idea and it happened to work.
    2. Control. As useful as having more animus dragons is, it's also a danger to the queen's power. They can do virtually anything, so what would stop them from overthrowing the kingdom?

Okay yes Albatros said that the only thing that a animas can do anything but bring back the dead but he was greedy and wanted only him to be the last animas, he could have lied to the rest of the tribes like darkstalker said and he might have believed it. At that the only 2 had done it and they were in hiding, and the tribes might have believed it was only attainable through genetics.

2). An young outcast who abandoned his tribe for a girl he just met
3). A queen who had only used their powers a single time (at least to the knowledge of others)
While Albatross before the massacre was
      - Old (Presumably Wiser)

      - Loyal
      - A dragon who could/would bring up entire palaces from nothing

In Legends: Darkstalker, Darkstalker notes how Arctic used a necklace instead of enchanting Whiteout herself because he had never thought of it. This, along with how other Animi acted, makes it seem like Darkstalker was the first animus to consider enchanting another dragon (I know Jerboa did this, but I still don’t think this was public knowledge at the time). This explains why Diamond never considered enchanting another dragon to become an animus. She could have used a piece of jewelry, yes, but it seems like Turtle was the first to discover that Animi could even give other dragons animus powers. And who knows if the affected dragon could even pass on said animus gift to the next generation. Anemone could very well be unable to have Animi dragonets (She of course can because she’s related to Albatross. I’m saying if she could pass it on through her artificial animus abilities.)

While Turtle was watching Dark Stalker he could have enchanted extra things while he still had his animus magic and that way he could have escaped with Anemone instead of giving all his stuff to her, and losing all his magic.
During the beach fight, why did Anemone try to kill Turtle? He was just telling her the truth, and Anemone wouldn’t accept it, like I would have guessed. But kill him? Why did she attempt to kill her brother?
Queen Wasp, why was she evil? Did she choose to do it? Was she abused as a dragonet? Or was it simply the stinger she had and she realised she had a great power, especially when she found the other mind and its plants (I forgot the name😂) also why did she turn out evil when her sisters turned out differently? Did she have a dedication as a dragonet to become the main hive Queen?
Librarian. The librarian was chosen to guard the books for many years, we know that, yes. But I have questions, did she sleep, eat, drink? Was she isolated or guarded? Did she think for herself or was she in full control of wasp? These are questions you don’t often think about when you read the books.
What about Sundew? What made her hate her mother so much? Why is bumblebee so attached to her? Will Willow and Sundew have eggs? (If it’s possible in the dragon world) And why does the book describe Willows face as CRINKLY!
Extra Questions: why does nearly every dragon in Arc 3 love each other? Cricket x Blue, Sundew x Willow, Swordtail x Luna. Okay they all love each other.
Will bumblebee become friends with Luna and Swordtails dragonet (if they have one.) and will Cricket and Blue have a real dragonet together (maybe once bumblebee is older)
Will Snowfall end up having dragonets and what will be their names and who with? (She kinda has to)

I don't think that this was an oversight, rather the Queens being doubtful that they could. Diamond could have tried, but not worded it correctly or overthought about it, by wondering if it would be suspicious for another random dragon to gain powers. Albatross likely thought of it too, but convinced Queen Lagoon that it would be impossible.
I also want to talk about another IceWing inconsistently that split the fandom apart, which is "What about Snowfox? If she was part of the royal family, presumably the only one, why didn't her decedents have animus magic?"
My solution for this is simply, Snowfox was adopted, probably by one of Diamonds kinder-hearted, more overlooked brothers. If she was adopted by a brother, it would allow her to be a legitimate part of the royal family, without carrying the animus gene.
(Sorry for that rambling, I just like theorising about animus magic)

since the current icewing royal family is.. well, royal, aren't they still related to royal icewing animus ancestors??
surely the death of the "LAST" icewing animus couldn't have wiped out their magic forever- there had to be at least one other royal who carried the gene and passed it on somehow, continuing the royal family AND ANIMUS ICEWINGS
the *only* way i see it could have been possible for their magic to totally disappear is if the current royal family were descended from commoners

Wait your right- wouldn't the gene pop up again later on? I mean, Gill and Queen Coral weren't animus dragons, yet Orca and Turtle, their kids, were, because they were all still related to the animus ancestors. I don't see a reason why that can't happen to IceWings, unless maybe Snowfox became queen, and then her family became royal or something- I'm not sure how to word it but now that i'm saying it, it still doesn't make much sense.

    • @Swirl_of_StarFire
      @Swirl_of_StarFire 3 месяца назад +1

No, it's totally possible. They could have lost the animus gene the same way the current British Royal line lost their hemophilia gene. Animus magic is rare, and an animus parent doesn't guarantee an animus child, therefore it has to be a recessive trait, same as hemophilia.
Queen Victoria had one copy of the faulty gene that causes hemophilia, but she also had a healthy one that was dominant over the faulty, so she herself didn't have hemophilia (she was a carrier). She ended up passing down the faulty copy to some of her children, who then spread it across all the royal houses of Europe causing some major problems for succession later down the line. The British line got lucky because enough of them passed down the healthy copy that the faulty copy eventually disappeared from the family, and now they are hemophilia-free. They are still related to Queen Victoria, but they don't have any copies of the faulty gene because chance was on their side.
It would be the same for the Icewing Royals: Eventually, enough of them didn't pass the animus gene down that there were no more copies of it left in the family, once again due to chance.

this may be a long comment)
Back in Dakrstalkers time we know how icewings had “lost” their Animus’s. However when looking at DarkStalkers family we can see how Darkstalker had Animus powers and whiteout didn’t. In the present day when Darkstalker is reawakened he makes a comment on how he had no children, and that Sunny was his great great great great (not typing all the great’s) granddaughter. This meant whiteout had children and knowing how Sunny’s father is an animus we can see that whiteout did indeed have animus children. This means Animus powers are genetic and not gained directly.
    Part two of my theory:
Because we know Queen Diamond must have had more children because there had to be another successor for the icewing throne, this means that genetically there should have at least been one animus icewing dragon through the 2000 years when Darkstalker was put to sleep. And reading the Guide to a dragon World we know there were other icewing animus’s, so if they had really lost ALL of their animus’s that wouldn’t be true. Also I don’t understand why Queen Diamond couldn’t just have more children, or make more children with animus powers. I get how the Icewings made a rule saying how an Animus can’t use their power more than once but we know Queen Diamond already broke this rule with summoning FoeSlayer to her, so I believe Queen Diamond would use her powers again to make more Animus dragons.
In conclusion I believe that the point of how a tribe has lost Animus’s is just simply for lore and it’s also false because of genetic makeup and how Queen Diamond could have done more to have Animus’s again. (This was very long I’m sorry)

One time I made a story with familiars. Instead of souls getting used up, it's energy. And like animus magic, the bigger the spell, the more energy you use. But there's also how long you use the spell and how much experience you have. If a young familiar uses a small spell for a short while, not much energy is used. If he uses small spell for a while, he'll become tired. If he uses a larger spell with more time, he'll soon pass out from energy loss. If he were uses a HUGE legendary spell, he can't, it would destroy him. However, compare that to a much older familiar with years of experience, he might be able to pull huge spell off(and lose a good chunk of energy). Long story short, use too much energy, you grow tired, then dizzy, then your out.

It's important to remember that if the IceWings made more animus dragons, everyone else would catch on and make more too. Of course, they could place in an override, but what if somebody found a way around that. They'd have much preferred a normal war to a magic war which would send them spiraling into a situation that they were ill prepared for. Perhaps they could have planned, but the spell would have eventually been overrided anyways, leaving them to the mercy of the rest of the world. Sort of like why nobody launches nuclear bombs. When one launches one, the others view it fine to launch one in turn. But that, of course, would end up quite possibly being an end-of-the-world scenario, and the IceWings, infamous for their paranoia over this kind of magic over the time, would definitely be the first if not among the first to realize this. Just getting Arctic back might have been their best bet.

I’ve always wanted this to be true because it makes for great lore, is one of the better explanations for this and would be great to base another Legends book on, who wouldn’t want to see what it was like in the OLD times, with the villain of the book being some evil animus IceWing, child of an aristocrat and a commoner.

  • @Godzillawolf1
    @Godzillawolf1 3 месяца назад

My take on it is that some dragons were aware it were possible, but either thought the risk was too high or for one reason or another didn't want people to know it was possible.
One thing about Turtle is his personal belief on Animus magic differs from most of the world. He doesn't believe in the 'animus magic corrupts the soul just by having it' thing, so him being willing to make more Animus makes sense. Other dragons believe in the 'Animus magic corrupts if used', so they likely wouldn't want to take the risk. Plus, you don't really know how a person will react to suddenly given unlimited power, you might easily end up with a Titan from Megamind situation.
Others might not want the world as a whole to know its possible for various reasons. IE, if people know its possible, then they'd all want more Animus dragons and maybe even wage war just to get one they can force to make more.
That said, in Diamond's case, I think the most likely reason was spite and stubborness. She was willing to break the rules solely because she felt personally slighted by Foeslayer 'stealing' Arctic. Diamond was utterly obsessed with revenge on Foeslayer and getting Arctic back, so combined with her being insane and so spiteful, I imagine she either never considered it or viewed it as somehow 'letting them win.'
It's also noteworthy we don't know if Artificial Animus Dragons would pass it on in their bloodline, as there's only one example we know of it happening.
I think the most likely reason is at least some people knew it was possible but it was a taboo and carried a high risk to it. And Diamond being an obsessive, vendictive, petty dragoness.

  • @PileofWolves

There is always the possibility that Turtle never enchanted Anemone. Since they are of the same heritage, they both could have been animus dragons, which means Turtle’s spell failed and it was a coincidence. We would only know this if we ever get to see Boa’s book.
The other option is that Anemone was a baby when she was enchanted, so it was easier to cast or less effort. Maybe they have only tried to enchant adult dragons to disastrous results.

Animus magic just breaks the laws of physics and it's partially why I love it so... However, with that said I have two things I wish to state.
Tui should've made it a certainty that there was a consequence of using animus magic, from the soul. Maybe animus magic was a monkey paw type deal or something. Each spell had a cost. The most basic examples are Stonemover and Jeraboa. A physical, unavoidable cost of using this force of nature.
    Two.
Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason your proposal was never attempted was because at the very least, on a subconscious level, everyone in the setting is terrified of Animi. Or in the Skywings case, openly Terrified over it. Including Animi dragons.
I can see a few example scenarios happening. Power hungry queen orders their animus to create more Animi, and said dragon either refuses, lies, or says they can't/refuse to try in the first place.
    Final Adendum:
Tui admittedly didn't do the best job of this, but if memory serves animus dragons are supposed to be beyond rare. Maybe one every few hundred years at best.

  • @LumiKat117

Personally I suspect that Anemone already had the potential, or even already had, animus magic and Turtle's interference unlocked it. That maybe Animus magic can only be unlocked in those that already have potential for it. And maybe even then, Anemone's magic could be weaker than the average animus? We never get a proper power scale since it's all dependent on a dragon's imagination.
Diamond also could've been blinded with rage and hate and didn't think to make more animus in her tribe because then that would mean that her inter-tribal conflict would have less validity. After all, it would be far more potent of a claim to say "They stole our animus bloodline and now we have none!" Rather than "They stole one of our animus! We still have magic, but we refuse to let anyone else have it!" So she'd get more sympathy from the other tribes.

Diamond being upset and outraged about Arctic being taken - pride and principle. Even if she could use animus magic to create a new dragonet with animus powers, she still spent years upon years grooming and forging Arctic into (what she perceived to be) a placid and complacent son who would create whatever animus gift she demanded of him. Having something stolen from her would have been a matter of pride, principle, and insult - 'how DARE you steal my stuff away from me!' sorta thing. The time investment, along with being entitled, would've fuelled her into her actions regardless of what she could do with her power.
Albatross wouldn't have enchanted another animus dragon for the same reason he was upset about Fathom being an animus - Fathom's appearance would make him obselete, or superfluous. Look how upset he gets about Fathom's discovery at the Talons of Power ceremony. To subject another dragon to his duties would've either meant that another dragon suffered at Coral's demands, or... maybe that animus dragon would've had Albatross killed. There was absolutely some hedging to that dynamic.
These are some more personal character takes on motivation, rather than the logic of what you've mentioned. I hope it helps!

So, I was thinking, since some of Whiteout’s descendants had animus magic, but Whiteout herself didn’t, it must be genetic. Even though Whiteout didn’t have animus magic, she must’ve carried the gene for it. If you look on the WoF Wiki on Arctic’s trivia section it says he had siblings, but none of them had animus magic. I think that similar to Whiteout, Arctic’s siblings could’ve carried the gene for animus magic, and had animus dragonets. So, theoretically, the IceWings should still have animus dragons. I would think that after 2,000 years, the IceWings would’ve had at least a few animus dragons.

Here are my personal points as to why she didn't do any of the things you said (some points might have already been brought up, so sorry if anyone is reading what's already been said).
    1. Culture: IceWings are known to be a conservative tribe and are prideful of their customs and beliefs. One said custom is having each animus use their power once to make a gift to the tribe. The IceWings know that Diamond made the gifts of healing and vengeance. The IceWings may have been ok with her breaking this rule publicly once, but making a 3rd gift may have crossed a line for them and think her soul is lost or will corrupt her enough to make her publicly use her magic more. And we all know how stubborn people are with tradition. Superstitions about animus magic and its effects on the soul of an animus would also likely make them wary of her using her magic more.
    2. If she used it in secret to make herself have more eggs guaranteed to hatch animi, the IceWings could have still suffered their terrible luck and not have any more animi in the future. She wouldn't have known about this terrible luck, and since animi can skip many generations, it likely would've been too late to have the enchantment ensure that future animi will be born.
    3. Darkstalker and Clearsight. Clearsight would likely see this in many possible futures and warn the NightWings about it, or receive a prophecy warning them about it, which could make Darkstalker more willing to simply kill Diamond or wipe out the whole IceWing tribe. Heck, Darkstalker could also copy the idea and make more NightWing animi. We saw him taking inspiration from others like Qibli when he made his bone earring make other dragons trust him so easily.
    4. Power and control. We saw Darkstalker offer Qibli a chance to become an animus, though of course Darkstalker intended to ensure that Qibli couldn't harm him with his [Qibli's] magic. If you're going to make others as powerful as you are, you would want to make sure they can't overthrow you or kill you. These other IceWing animi could become more popular than Diamond in time, and we all know how people in power see these kinds of people as threats to their own power. Diamond would have to be more specific in her spell and soend more time trying to word it, which brings to my next point.
    4. It's a war. Wars are very stressful and taxxing. Every choice and decision has to be made quickly and yet also with enough thought put into them to avoid disaster. All in all, extreme caution and precision must be taken. No matter how small a choice may be, they can caste immense consequences - good or bad - beyond what can be conceived. Diamond had lost Arctic and is losing many IceWings in the war. She can't waste too much time. Yes, she had the time to caste some spells like bringing back Foeslayer and making the gift of vengeance. But there might not have been too much time allowed to brainstorm as much or fully plan out such ideas. And with the point on stress, this can all easily slow down her thought processing, along with other higher ups in the IceWing hierarchy, which would make it harder for them to come up with such ideas.
    5. Anything can open up plotholes, and not only just animus magic. Darkstalker could've tried summoning Foeslayer to him even if she was dead to give her a burial or last rites. Clearsight could've seen other futures, like a future of Darkstalker trying to bring Foeslayer to him and it works and find out she isn't dead. Fathom could've tried enchanting himself to not be an animus and maybe also ensure any dragonets he has won't be animi. Deathbringer could have gone back to his mother and hide her better, which could've prevented her capture and death. We all think of what ifs and alternative histories, and ridicule people and governments for making such choices. It reminds me of this RUclips channel I used to watch a lot, where they analyze horror and survival movies . History and real life is full of idiot plots, plot holes, and choices that should seem obvious to be bad or should've been taken but weren't. For example, in hindsight, it was foolish for Japan to attack the U.S. in WW2 when it should be obvious that doing so would force the U.S., an industrial, economic, and military juggernaut to join the war on the side of the Allied Powers, but they were too confident that they [Japan] could still even if that were the case. Such pride and confidence is also seen with the IceWings, so should it be that surprising that they didn't think of these ideas sooner, if at all? And now, to what is likely my final point.
    6. Dragons are like humans in that we are very flawed. It doesn't matter what glorious power or technology someone has, for it shall always have one flaw - the user. No one is all-knowing, even if one were to somehow see many futures or be omniscient. Humans can be inhibited in using such power in many ways, from biases, influence of others, greed, pride, etc. Can we or dragons or other sapient beings handle the power of omniscience to ensure we don't miss out on these ideas or use weapons to their full potential, or somehow be morally good and forego weapons or evil actions altogether? It doesn't matter if its magic, a normal weapon like a sword, or natural weapons like dragon claws or firebreathing. No one can come up with every possibility in how they can be used. No matter how great or poweful a weapon is, the user (or groups of people, an organization, a government, a culture and its teachings, etc.) will determine how and in what ways it can be used or not used. In the end, I think we are being way too critical about this. I very much believe that it is not that farfetched for Diamond to not think of these things and going with them.
Let know what y'all think (I am sorry for making people read these long walls of text. There are also likely many points I missed or didn't expand on or providemuch clarity on, so I'm all ears on any corrections and counter-arguments and rebuttals). I will close this with one of my many favorite quotes that I think highlights what I'm saying with the limitations we or other human-like characters have that can affect how tools, weapons, or power can be used:
"A lightsaber - any weapon - only achieves worth in how it is wielded - in the effort, the struggle of one who holds it. Such a weapon does not make a Jedi or a Sith. And at times, it makes them much, much less than they are." - Kreia
(Edit: Forgot this since Im sleep deprived, but Point 7: The effects on land from too much animus magic being used: We know that Darkstalker abusing his power resulted in the Talon Peninsula shrinking considerably between his time and the present. If Diamond kept on using her magic in secret, or from future IceWing animi using their magic once or more than once if she did enchant others or have eggs with guaranteed animi, the same thing could occur to the Ice Kingdom. It may work in the short term, but it could be disastrous in the long term.)

One possibility is that even though Animus magic can theoretically do anything it’s still limited by the dragon using it. For example perhaps Animus dragons had tried to make other Animus dragons in the past but only certain dragons can make it work, both in terms of only certain casters can give another dragon animus powers and only certain dragons have their minds work in a way that would allow them to use animus magic. This could even be why animus magic can skip generations if for example a dragon inherited the genes for having animus magic but not the genes for using it they wouldn’t be able to use animus magic, while a dragon that had the genes for using animus magic but not the ones for having it would be able to use it if they received animus power from another dragon. Queen Diamond may have just been unlucky.
There’s also that animus power is widely considered a cursed gift so there may be some hesitancy to inflict it on others with Turtle’s willingness to give powers to Anemone ironically showing that he is being corrupted because he was willing to put another dragon in danger to keep himself safe.

SPOILER ALERT: (Book 10, Darkness of Dragons, maybe Book 9 also, and maybe books 11-15 in a tiny way, specifically the poison jungle...)
Darkstalker sorta answers this when he gives other nightwings limited powers, but specifically tells them he can't make them Animus also... Although he can, he knows that this could go bad in several ways.
A: He would possibly create enemy's as powerful as himself!
B: Every dragon in Pyrrhia could end up being an animus and without respect for the power, and limits on it, it would inevitably be total chaos!
C: Darkstalker knows there are dragons smarter than himself, such as Qibli, and even ones he doesn't know, such as Kinkajou! Having access to his powers via the scroll, did ultimately lead to his undoing.
D: As in the case of Jerboa III, she broke animus altogether with a simple spell, neither Diamond nor Darkstalker, or really any other animus specifically wanted this but if they gave other Dragons the power, without really understanding it, they may do something like that, or worse!
E: For all they knew, the dragons who used the power as a dragon who became an animus as a result of someone making them one, wouldn't all use their own souls to cause the power to be, but instead would all sap from the main source of everyone else's power, and perhaps it would end if they died... Since it was a speculative idea.
Taking this into account in Queen Diamond's case, If she did make more animus, it would quickly become well known that it could be done among the Ice Kingdom, and out of fear of these same outcomes, they would have most likely cut the head off the snake before it got out of hand, and done away with all of the Animus, including Diamond!
So Sharing equal power is a bad idea if you happen to be an animus... After all, Queen Diamond already had the power, and perhaps decided that this outcome may be for the best after all...
I would tend to think that when Albatross said they could do anything but raise the dead, he was basically oversimplifying and leaving out all the finer considerations...
Turtle however, didn't think it through, but is very polite!
Animus magic is so open-ended that it's hard to restrict someone else who also has it. (Insert Dumb and Dumber Jinx reference clip here) =P
At least that's my take on it.

I’m pretty sure the queens didn’t do it at the time because they might have thought it wasn’t a possibility, like a limit they hadn’t discovered yet or that the spell would take to much of their animus’s soul that it would turn them evil, or it just never occurred to them that it could happen.
For Diamonds part with dragonets, it was most likely that she was too bent on revenge that having dragnets seemed out of the picture. Another thing to mention is that Diamond is currently fighting a war and having dragonets in the middle of a war seems like a pretty dumb thing to do, in my opinion. Her attention would be divided between the war, her dragonets and revenge. While Diamond did have other heirs, like Snowfox, she probably wouldn’t have wanted to make them animuses because she didn’t trust them with that much power. If Diamond had in fact given Snowfox animus powers, Snowfox probably would have used them to overthrow Diamond and take the throne.

Yo i found another plothole the other day. So we all know that when Peril burned Darkstalker's scroll the magic was returned to him, yet the piece of scroll they used to turn Dark into peace still had magic? And if you wanna go another route then they would have had to destroy all the pieces in order for Dark to get his magic back. Idk thought I might mention it.

It seems like Turtle is just... the onky dragon to create another animus. He did it out of fear, and no other animus dragons were in his position. So, I guess animus dragons didn't think of it, want power all to themselves, or just didn't have a need to make that impulsive decision. Also, Darkstalker didn't have dragonets, but Whiteout passed animus genetics on, even though she wasn't one herself. So why couldn't Snowfox have had animus dragonets- or at least with animus genetics? Did she die too soon, or decide not to have dragonets?

Animus magic can sort of raise the dead by creating a copy of someone. Darkstalker tries this very loophole to bring Clearsight back in Book 10 and it actually does work to an extent, the problem was this Clearsight wasn't the idealized version of her he has in his head and he kept trying to "fix" her.

I really wish that turtle’s animus power didn’t work on anemone, but that anemone was already an animus! Maybe queen coral was right and there was a weird feeling from her to show she was an animus! After that, turtle might try to make more animuses and fail, because anemone was a coincidence!

Okay here’s my theory: Icewings easily could have broken the economy. Yeah. With those three holes that you can pull seals out? Easy to trade those seals for treasure and coins and whatnot. Second theory: Animus magic is genetic, it still could have been passed down, the line hasn’t changed blood. Icewings are a little weird.

I wish magic stayed skill based as it supposedly was in the first arc, when Anemone theoretically struggled with it? If it was as easy as in the second arc, she couldn't even pretent that she has skill issues for a Whirlpool and queen to not use her in the war immediately

I don't think the Nightwings completely stole Animus Magic from the Icewings, because Diamond had a sister, who likely had the Animus gene, it just wasn't strong enough for her to use magic, but probably sense it just like Winter and Sunny.

I think that if you are an artificial animus or a product of animus spells you will not be able the continue to have animus magic in your kids or in the rest of your bloodline. So if the icewing were to do that they would have all of their animi (pleural for animus) dragons enchanted their kids to be animi or enchanted themselves to have animus children but I am probably just being dumb

I’m honestly kind of glad they did this because animus magic is my least favorite plotpoint. When it’s set up in book two it’s an interesting concept, but the willy nilly a wizard did it solution for most problems in arc two I don’t like. Kinkajou is paralysed and somewhat borken? Extra hearts for herl life bar. I need people to trust me? Magic. The only good thing they did with it are turtle’s battle with anenomie which was pretty awesome, and the super messed up backstory for the jerboa family. Other than that, get magic out of here which was done in arc three one of the reasons I prefer it. Arc one for plot is still probably the best one, burn and blister and scarlet will never be topped in villainy, but I really prefer arc three to two because of the magic solves everything way the plot goes

It might make sense if making artificial amini were extremely taboo, and just not mentioned? Like how the half-myth of animus magic driving you insane, perhaps part of it was also ‘giving another your powers will drive them mad even quicker’ or something! Just considered very bad luck or just morally reprehensible.

Perhaps an early animus did figure it out an animus could make other animus dragons. I imagine to prevent magic from being given to someone bad, they cast an enchantment that would prevent any animus princess from giving anybody else that kind of power. I say "princess" specifically because Pyrrhia has always had a matriarchal view, all the canon animus dragons in the past were female, and they maybe assumed only females could be animus dragons. The first known males like Albatross, Fathom, and Darkstalker, all probably could have thought of making someone else an Animus, but they all had reasons not to.

Whether it be not knowing or not caring, queen Diamond shouldn't have done what she did. The loss of Arctic and his animus magic wasn't devastating, seeing as most of Pyrrhia has largely gotten on without it, save for a few instances of relics, individuals, etc. scattered here and there.

Especialy with animus magic, there are tons of 'plot holes'; however, I've come to my own conclusions that fill in all of them and answer the questions that are underlying in almost every book about empathy and progress.
In short, I say that the reason behind 'why' they didn't think of it is because they couldn't think of it, they are not human and we are projecting human ideals onto them. Dragons haven't moved past the stone age for 5k years because they never needed too and never thought too, they can't comprehend empathy or other species because they just don't work that way, they have an entirely alien morality system to our own and it's fascinating to see how they see the world. Tusnami murders humans in the first book yet no one talks about it because to them they don't see it as important, its why we have all these different views, to show how everyones slightly different and even in the Dragonslayer novel we never get a true transspecies communication due to Wrens condition.
They never thought about it because their brains dont work on the creative ideas that humans do, any animus could have done LITERALY ANYTHING yet chose to do magic tricks because that was the limit of their minds at the time. I'm not saying dragons are dumb in saying they are different to us and have their own minsets that I find fascinating to explore. Perhpas Tui never intended all this and it can be explained as "its a children's book dont look into it" but what if you were to look into it, to try and elaborate the lore and ideas that may or may not have been intened to not only cover those plot holes but also expand the story into one magnatuedes greater with higher and more complex ideas as we view this alien world though alien eyes and see how another species, one that has never grown thought the same enviromental trials as we have and the concequeces of such. Could also expand this ideal into views of envasive species and out of control empire growth and genocide but thats a story for another time.

Why not use Animus magic to create a separate magic system that doesn't affect souls.
Also it's quite possible that animus magic can only be given to a dragon If they have a direct family member with animus powers. Hence why the seawings/icewings never found out.
