    Here is my tutorial for calling California/Valley Quail and Gambels Quail using my calls that I make. This instructional will be the same for other calls you may have as they all should be of similar style designs.
    Additionally I explain how to tune and maintain the calls so you may keep using them for years to come.

    Hey man... I just received the calls today and I LOVE IT! I have a few pet Gambel's and Scale quails in the back yard, I tried both calls, and my quails responded. This proved that the calls work and I hope they will bring me success on my next hunt. Thanks again!

      Glad to hear that. I've not heard scaled quail enough to of known if the calls would also work with that species of not. From what I heard I thought they might but was not familiar enough with their calls to know. Cool to know they can do scaled as well. I also haven't a clue what some of the different Mexican species sound like either.

      @Bilbo Faggins With having to use steel shot I'd use either an improved cylinder, light mod, or mod choke. The brush density is going to dictate the range at which most birds will flush at. Creosote is sparse and the birds can see you from farther out and will flush at longer range. Go with a mod choke probably. In denser juniper or rabbitbrush the birds will feel more comfortable trying to hide and may wait till you are right on them before they flush. An IC choke is better in those situations. Ultimately you'll want to pattern and experiment with different chokes, shells, etc to figure out what works best for you, your gun, your area, etc. What is your optimal setup is something that will come over time.
      As a noob just starting out my advice is to not overthink it and just get out there and get time in the field using the choke or shot size you have or can get. The experience and practice is much more important than shot size and choke constriction. I used a Remington 1100 shotgun that was a fixed mod choke barrel for years and have downed hundreds if not thousands of birds behind that gun. When compared to the Franchi or Benelli I have have now that shotgun is objectively a piece of shit... still got the job done though.
      Shot size I like #6 for quail having to use steel in CA. However reality is trying to find the brand, shot size, etc in steel that is in stock near you at a price that doesn't violate your soul probably not going to happen. Use what can be gotten. 6 or 7. Whatever there is.

      @Bilbo Faggins I go by what I feel like doing. If it's hot I'll get food or take a nap in a nice shady spot. The birds will be looking to do the same thing and often I'll wake to the sound of quail or chukar that have surrounded me. And they didn't know I was there cause I was quiet sleeping.

    Over here in Kingman, Arizona we have several coveys of Gambel quail in the acreage next to our house. We feed during the spring and summer, but they still show up in separate groups morning and evening. It would be fun to see if they respond to your call. Everything looks to be sold out. When might you be selling calls again ?

  • @ShadySide123

    What do you think about a 2 toned call? I would assume you are using some sort of Forster bit to cut out the chamber, would it be effective to cut out the chamber at a 1% bevel (or so)? One side would have a more throaty and deeper pitch then the other side? Thanks for the great vids, introduction the the nevada water development map and the quick shipping on your calls. A few of those guzzlers are just above the grocery store I shop at outside Reno. Now I just love grocery shopping. Cheers.. Daniel

      I've not experimented with tilting the chamber to see if it makes a difference. Could probably just do one on the 3d printer to experiment with. The 2 tone calls that have 2 reeds for each valley and gambels quail I think are a gimmick. It's just a call with 2 different pitched quails. The quails have different tone voices between individuals anyways. I don't find enough pitch difference between the two different types that would be needed. Have a mountain quail whistle integrated is nice but I can also just do that call with my mouth pretty good.

    Where can a quail caller for cotournix quail be purchased?

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  7 месяцев назад

      Are those similar to bob white? I don't know. The quail on the west over here are valley gambels and scaled which this call can be used for. And Mountain Quail which I use the cheap 6 in 1 duck whistle calls for.
