Hey, just wanna say I really respect how you post videos about failures too. Mistakes and particularly learning from them is such a big part of the hobby, and it's really nice that you let us learn from yours as opposed to trying to save face. Thanks for that :)
Yes ty for this vid I learnt something I truly needed to know bout which jars to use n which not to. Also ty braedon too.
Mason jars are only hermetically closed if something hot (water, jam or whatever hot) is poured into it, because thats how the lid is designed. Obviously you will not make a boling ecosphere haha so thats a big NO for mason jars. I sugges you try FIDO jars, they are 100% sealed when the lid is closed. I did recently a project on my channel and the ecosphere is thriving with life and after 2 months water is crystal clear.
I just watched your video, it was really good. subscribed my man. looking forward to seeing more

I don’t even wanna find out what’s in freshwater here. It’s so polluted that alone is frightening. >
Tre Rubinsy I was thinking the same thing! It’s illegal to transport live animals away from the lake near my house because they might be carrying VHS (a disease that causes internal bleeding in fish). The thought of that getting into my tanks is enough to scare me away from collecting any local plants, rocks or anything.
Drew Knoll-Owen I live near philly. Any water way right near here is likely to have something growing extra appendages or be invasive. >

ive kept many enclosed ecospheres before, and in my experience you have to allow a decent amount of space for air at the top! if its all or mostly water it seems to go anaerobic pretty quick and you end up with a jar of sludge, lol
We're do u get the jars? Lol
@@zizzycompilations9729 u can reuse or get from a variety store
@@zizzycompilations9729 or dollar store
@@cathrynsison5357 ok!
I have also learned that making ecospheres, wish I knew it when I Started. Even though my first Terrarium/ecosphere was an ecosphere and I did leave a bit of air on the top. It's thriving to this day, but I did do it to many other ecospheres and learned not to that way. And now I think an air pocket at the top makes it look a bit better too.
People: How much Minecraft do you want?
Chris: *yes*
As someone that does canning, the type of jar/lid you use does not cause fermentation or pickling, that is caused by the contents you put in and processing of the jar. The one way air vacuum is only done when you do the heat treating process, and only if you finger tighten the ring so that when boiled, there is enough resistance to cause a seal, but let the steam out of the jar, then once cooled the vacuum starts, you may hear the lid pop, and you can then finish tightening the ring if you wish, or remove it all together. If you fully tighten the ring prior to cooking the jars, you will cut off all air and risk the jar actually exploding, but the coating itself is not an oxygen absorption/filtering material, else that would be kinda scary to boil your food with :|
Fermentation can also cause jars to explode when the ring is tightened too much, and so most people that practice mason jar fermentation use special air-lock lids or kits, so air exchange/leaking was not your problem.
The only reason I can imagine mason jars cause failed ecospheres is if the metal lid could be copper lined, but any namebrand canning lids should be coated with a non reactive material because what people mostly jar is acidic foods (you generally need a minimum amount of acid for proper food safety anyway when canning,) and they react poorly with copper and aluminum. And in your case, it could either have been a cheap lid, or the fact you pointed out about not enough light. I'm betting on a cheap lid by how discolored the saltwater turned out, reacting with the copper, which I have seen first hand as I too live near the ocean and collected salt water in the past to have it go black like that.
Your latch style mason uses a silicone/rubber seal, which obviously has no metal involved for the internal contents, it is also a much larger vessal, which we all know is better when it comes to aquatic life in all situations. Hope little Sven is doing well! (I also take it none of her eggs survived as your last update did not state an explosion of shrimplits.)
Them snails are soooooo cutte!!! And that crab filter feeding is also strangely adorable
Sometimes I imagine that we are all inside some sort of ecosphere and there’s some enormous being talking about what went wrong with the environment. “I may have let the capitalism run wild, check back next week to see what happens!” Humans for thought.
You just gave me my tenth existential crisis for today

I can not wait to see your open ecosphere. i set up mine 10 weeks ago ande eeryone is stillliving and happy. i do small water changes once a week and feed them every second day because there is enough algea growing and ther plant material inside to feed the snails :)

Also hows your shrimp sealed ecosphere goin
Is going okay will update later on!

Hi
The video won't update as your on it so it'll stay like that until you go on another video were as the comment will update
Just so you know, I've been binge watching your videos ever since I stumbled upon them; I got a beta recently, and even if I tried to prepare a nice tank for him (10 liters and dechlo water) I've realised that many things were wrong (no filter, no plants, no led, and your average disgustang blue pebbles).
Today I couldn't bear it any more, and I went to buy a new decent home to my little friend (his name's Pumukli if you're curious enough).
It wasn't easy, but I managed to create a nice little home for him; filter, led, substrate, plants, stones,... now I just have to wait for it to cycle properly.
Can't wait to move my fish in here, he's gonna love it.
That’s great! How’s he doing now? Assuming he’s alive o.o
Ughhh Chris you'll hit 100K in like a week give my tank some time to grow out!! I can't just send some unfinished tank for a review 😣😣. Btw I NEED FRIDAY FIX !!!
I need my tank to grow out too
@@ummjayden3632 it's pretty fun to see the plants grow in slowly isn't it ??
Sunay Mukherjee Yeah it’s really fun, I have shrimp in my tank and I just sit there waiting for them to pop out of the plants
The problem with Mason jars is you can't seal them properly without going through the canning process, which involves a large pot of boiling water that you have to soak them in. ^^
"Mistakes are important" really hit different today. Thanks!
Exactly what I needed to start my Friday : )
3:50 obvious case of corona
I like this Minecraft chill music, it fits very well
chris: "I'm not gonna eat it, I'm not that crazy"
also chirs: *eats bloodworm toast for 20k special*
I've watched a number of vids on closed ecospheres. I believe they would all work better if there were simply more air and less water. The success of any system depends on its creating an equilibrium. More air, maybe as much as 1/4 to 1/3 of the volume, just might do the trick.
Betta when they haven’t had a water change since god knows when: Where’d the other half of my house go?
Their “caretaker”: Gone, reduced to atoms
The red worm looks like something that you're fish would love to eat .
This one was hella soothing to watch lol, loved it. Sad they both failed, but hey, now we all got to learn something!!!
Getting some real nice Life in Jars vibes here.

I just saw a snail etc on the glass alive in saltwater, when he tilted the jar, at end of vid.. so hopefully he dumped these jars full back where collected.
6:28, yes you are special... but in a fantastic way, you are always smiling, always positive, and all around a very pleasant person to watch on youtube, and with everything going on and how angry people are in the world, having the attitude you have does make you special, and that is why I am subscribed and my facility and I watch your videos.
And yes, very interested in your closed shrimp ecosphere! I wanna start growing aquatic plants to go with my land plants :^) and would LOVE to have something successful to do with all my flippy-lid, rubber-rimmed jars (whatever they're called; they look like your shrimp jar)
3:49 Leaked coronavirus sigma variant
Legend has it Chris is going to chug both jars at 100k subs, let's keep up the pace people!
Does it need more plants too, perhaps? I wonder what the ratio is for everything to be in balance?
Yeey finally early.. that poor crab 😅 well as we go we learn 🙂
He said “pickleing” and my immediate reaction was to laugh and say “this man pickled the ocean”
Oh wow. I thought I was a dummy for not knowing how to close mason jars. Now I know the air leaks out. Thanks for the info!!
hello! i was wondering where you kept your jars? what was the room temp at all times? did you give the jars natural window sunlight or use a lamp? did you move the jars from room to room? if you used a lamp, was there a special bulb you used and timing for it? please help me, thank you!
That was really neat. Lets do it again!
This calmed my soul.🌊
It's not quite an ecosphere but I have a large jar that I put all the hitchhiker snails from plants before I treat themand I was also inspired to put a shrimp in it by the video and it doing great
I love the mine craft music in every video!!! Fits the vibe so well 👍💛
Hey, Chris.. Of course u r special 😊👍
You can buy plastic lids for mason jars that don't let air out. ON another note, I bought one of those 'BioSphere's in 2013 that had 4 shrimp, now almost 8 years later, 1 is still alive, he's been the sole survivor for 4-5 years. I sometimes feel bad that the poor guy is all by himself, do shrimp get lonely!?
By the time I finish this vie o it will be right before my first zoom lessom of the day. Works for me
I bet those are gonna smell great when you open them 😵
I've been waiting for this update!
*I love how he used Minecraft music-*
I made a ecosphere of a stream in my backyard and there are cyclops, a hydra and a mystery worm in it the hydra is rly cool but it eats the cyclops so hopefully there’s enough plant matter and hiding places for the cyclops to keep reproducing and keep the hydras fed
AHHH the crab is SO CUTE
Nice aquascapes my guy
Killer Jar. Fun fact: The main presenter from top gear is related to the chap who invented that jar.
I made two ecospheres out of 1.5litre glass bottles. They had elodea densa plants and snails
Getting notified by your channel is one of the highlights of my day.

Thanks for the upload churs.
Edit: omg that typo was not intentional but I’ll leave that in
I actually thought of trying out an ecosphere from my local lake. Good thing you said it didn't work with that lid 😄
I just found your videos yesterday and I’ve watched all of them.. now I’m early?! Damn, feels good man
Have a great day and keep up the good work 🙂🙃
Thanks for the like 🤗
Other people : I am the best at tank set ups!!!
Chris : hold my mason jars...
I'm with your second theory. Really there are no closed systems...I wonder if they would have "lasted" longer with more air/less water? I have never canned food, but I don't think mason jars force out gas without external heat & pressure. More like, all the oxygen is used up (as with pickles- anaerobic respiration! Mmm, pickles!)
The animals at the park are always free.
5:00 that is the absence of all color Chris does Sithis rule over that jar cuz that is the Void my boy lmao
I got the same translucent bacteria colony when I tried it too.

Random question, when you top off your tanks, do you use distilled water?
Chris remember FTR that had like jar and 6 or 7 goldfish and owner was calling it ecosphere
Yes hahaha that was horrendous
Damn this salt water has the same type of gatorate. Thing in there as those 5 gallon goldfish tanks, NICE
Haven’t even watched the whole thing but I know it’s going to be a good one
That Cyclops water flea do be *speed* tho
I think the tiny white things are anchor worm lava
Ok I know this was two years ago but the ecosystems didn't collapse because you used mason jars, those don't just automatically 'pickle' things by virtue of being commonly used for pickling lmao. They don't selectively expel oxygen like a one-way valve, that's not how those seals work and that's not how pickling works. The problem was that those jars were both sealed with excess amounts of living organic matter (seaweed, plants, etc.) in them relative to their volumes. The seaweed, etc. wasn't going to live forever in an environment that didn't suit it, and when it died, all the nutrients stored in its tissues were released into the water and the system became eutrophic and oxygen was depleted as microbes consumed the organic nutrients. After that, it was only hospitable to bacteria and archaea. Sealed ecospheres will usually stabilize more readily when they're loaded with relatively oligotrophic environments. Just seal them with clear water and some sediment, and let any incidental autotrophs (algae, plants, etc.) build up their populations to suit the environment. If you really want to deliberately include moss, algae, w/e, add the smallest viable pieces possible. Making them oligotrophic will also eliminate the need for a dedicated light, since oversupplying light can cause algae to overpopulate and lead to another crash.

100K subscriber special suggestion, pickled hornwort: will it toast?
Hi chris
@Fish For Thought
I would love to see you do another Saltwater Ecosphere.... but try not to bury any marine algae in the substrate as it causes the automatic rot of the Algae, releasing the Iodine solution in the water giving it a blue or purple apearance
Have you seen Life in Jars, the YT channel? Most of his videos make me wanna barf but he does loads of these enclosed ecospheres with some fun commentary as he observes the life in them. The life in them is what makes me wanna barf, just like the jar critters in this video :^)
