I've always seen the fountain as a very stiff middle finger to not just art (whatever that is!) but all culture (social constructs). To me , it's the alpha and omega of a final phase. Diogenes of Sinope would have been proud.
He gave the middle finger to artists who were better than he was, and it was out of spite and jealousy. Nothing to be proud of here.
