A lot of people answered most of your question but I did not see anyone explaining why there is a lot of smoke on the MV. Metaphorically, the song also tackles the fine dust/air pollution in south korea. They want to breathe and set free from the fine dust. Thats also why at the end part of the mv, they jumped over a fence, youngmin got out of the plastic cage and they are dancing freely while raining. And yes, Daehwi and Woojin are part of Wanna One, Donghyun and Youngmin are from MxM and YDPP (They are all from P101s2). All of them are quite famous and it is (at least my) most awaited debut this year. ^^

I wasn't a big fan of their predebut song Hollywood(not really my style), but Breathe I liked a lot better! I think that pre-chorus part you were talking about reminded me strongly of GWSN because of that house music sound. Sorta makes me want a GWSN cover to this now!
Because it wasn't really a pre-debut, it was a present for fans of PD101 and Wanna One because it was the song Brand New trainees sang on the first evaluation. Daehwi wrote it and he himself admitted apparently that he's not really pleased with this song now since he feels like he improved and can make better songs.

All 5 members were highly anticipated. As you know from other comments, Youngmin, Donghyun, Woojin, and Daehwi auditioned together as 4 on produce 101. Woojin and Daehwi made it to Wanna One, and Youngmin and Donghyun debut as a duo called MXM. Jeonwoong was an ex JYP trainee and trained together with Bang Chan, Yugyeom, and DAEHWI back in the day. He then went to YG and appeared on the show "Stray Kids" where the public found out he was friends with Bang Chan. Jeonwoong garnered attention for his beautiful voice and was known as a member of the fanmade group, "Silver Boys". Silver Boys consists of 11 ex/current YG trainees and even though they are not debuting together, they have a HUGE fanbase called "Mates". 2 members of Silver Boys will be debuting soon as CIX with Jinyoung from Wanna One too! And the rest are debuting soon as well in Treasure13. Bringing MXM, Wanna One, and Silver Boys into one group is a huge thing. Hence, AB6IX was born.

They came out with a new album and every song is a treat. My favorite is Surreal. It’s my favorite kpop song of the year so far. I have never listened to so many songs from one group in years!

Thank you for the reaction! The smoke is related to the song and its lyrics. One of the things that inspired Daehwi for the song lyrics is the "fine dust" problem in Korea these days. The days there can get very smoggy and the days where people wear a mask when going outside for their health is increasing. He combined that + the other interpretive meanings feeling suffocated and wanting a fresh breathe of air for the song. :)

I've seen/heard a lot of good things about this group, but this song, and Hollywood too, didn't really impress me enough to want to stan them. They are no doubt talented, but i wish them a future of success!

The guy that you said looks familiar is one of the members from Wanna One, he calls Lee Daehwi, and he actually produces this title track even though he is just 18. The first rapper is also from Wanna One, which is Park Woojin, a very talented dancer !!!!! Both members in MXM are also in this group, Lim Youngmin, and Kim Donghyun. All four of them participated in produce 101 and are pretty popular, that's why a lot of people are so excited about their debut. An additional member is added to support their vocal line, Jeon Woong. The smoke I think is used to represent the 미세먼지 situation in Korea, Daehwi said that this song is for people to enjoy and feel relaxed, it is time for them to take a nice breath.

Yeah 4 of then are from produce and 2 made it to debuted in wanna one while 2 got eliminated and went back to brand new music to debut as mxm in the meantime and the 4 of them got back together after wanna one and added 1 new member to make their full debut as a group. The 4 original members are pretty popular especially since 2 of them made it to wanna one which is why they got so much traction.

Since it's titled Breathe, and the lyrics talk about being kind of suffocated by the stresses and worries one may have, and wanting to breathe and be "set free" the smoke could be the visual representation of it.
I would say that the smoke/fog in those scenes represents their pressures/struggles and how the want to escape and breathe the clear air. I think it was something to the effect of; Life suffocates you but I will help you breathe. The smoke represents those suffocating elements of life today, and then they run into fresh air and freedom; I want to breathe.

Silver Boys consists of 11 ex/current YG trainees and even though they are not debuting together, they have a HUGE fanbase called "Mates". 2 members of Silver Boys will be debuting soon as CIX with Jinyoung from Wanna One too! And the rest are debuting soon as well in Treasure13.
Bringing MXM, Wanna One, and Silver Boys into one group is a huge thing.
Hence, AB6IX was born.
Two of the members are former Wanna One members and two are MxM members. The reason for all of the smoke, meaning wise, is that they want to "breathe" or escape the suffocation and stress of society. Daehwi produced the song and Woojin choreographed the dance.

Having all the smoke represents their breath being blocked in a way. At the end when it rains, the smoke clears and they can actually breathe. Hence “I want to breathe to set me free”
Two red-haired are Daehwi and Woojin from Wanna One and the member with black hair and pink hair, Youngmin and Donghyun are from MXM and the blonde member is Jeon Woong who is new and is an ex-YG and ex-JYP trainee

They came out with a new album and every song is a treat. My favorite is Surreal. It’s my favorite kpop song of the year so far. I have never listened to so many songs from one group in years!
Two of the members are from Wanna One (the two with red hair) and two of the other members have debuted before in a group called MXM (the rapper with dark hair and the one with silverish brownish hair), and the platinum blond member was a ex jyp and ex yg trainee, that's why the group has a lot of hype to it right away
their concept was to portray the feeling of being trapped in society and stress and how they want to be free from it
I think the smoke symbolizes them not being able to breathe and then wanting to "breathe, just set me free"

The smoke is related to the song and its lyrics. One of the things that inspired Daehwi for the song lyrics is the "fine dust" problem in Korea these days. The days there can get very smoggy and the days where people wear a mask when going outside for their health is increasing. He combined that + the other interpretive meanings feeling suffocated and wanting a fresh breathe of air for the song. :)

The theme of the song, why they have all the smoke, is that they're suppose to be like a breathe of the fresh air for the fandom
this feels like a similar vibe to VAV (deep voice rapper, airy vocals, club music, mv with dark setting but neon color highlights) so i'll probably check them out and give them a shot. i am enjoying their sound in this debut.

yes, the boy you're talking about is daehwi and he was in w1 with the first rapper woojin.. then you have the duo mxm, donghyun the one with the flowers and youngmin the second rapper. for the 5th member he's an ex yg/jyp trainee and he's new :') his name is Woong¡! AB6IX also has another mv/performance video(?) for their song Hollywood (4 of the members used that song for their p101 audition, they rearranged it adding woong¡!)

I've seen/heard a lot of good things about this group, but this song, and Hollywood too, didn't really impress me enough to want to stan them. They are no doubt talented, but i wish them a future of success!

The guy that you said looks familiar is one of the members from Wanna One, he calls Lee Daehwi, and he actually produces this title track even though he is just 18. The first rapper is also from Wanna One, which is Park Woojin, a very talented dancer !!!!!
Both members in MXM are also in this group, Lim Youngmin, and Kim Donghyun. All four of them participated in produce 101 and are pretty popular, that's why a lot of people are so excited about their debut.
An additional member is added to support their vocal line, Jeon Woong.
The smoke I think is used to represent the 미세먼지 situation in Korea, Daehwi said that this song is for people to enjoy and feel relaxed, it is time for them to take a nice breath.

Yeah 4 of then are from produce and 2 made it to debuted in wanna one while 2 got eliminated and went back to brand new music to debut as mxm in the meantime and the 4 of them got back together after wanna one and added 1 new member to make their full debut as a group. The 4 original members are pretty popular especially since 2 of them made it to wanna one which is why they got so much traction.
Daewhi looks familiar cuz he was a member of wanna one until they disbanded. There’s one more member in AB6IX that’s from Wanna One as well, it’s the rapper that rapped his parts first, Woojin :)
I read that daehwi's inspiration for "breathe" was fine dust situation in korea so overuse of smoke can be allusion to it, since the lyrics say they "wanna breath" but they cant bc of smoke (fine dust)
Thanks for reacting to this PD! Also, one of the reasons there's quite a lot of smoke may be due to the concept of the song itself. Since it's titled Breathe, and the lyrics talk about being kind of suffocated by the stresses and worries one may have, and wanting to breathe and be "set free" the smoke could be the visual representation of it.

I would say that the smoke/fog in those scenes represents their pressures/struggles and how the want to escape and breathe the clear air.
They said that the song is a comfort to the public as there are many things in day to day life which disable us from being able to "breathe" properly.

The smoke (they mentioned this in an interview, though I can't recall where exactly) is in relation to the theme of the song; Breathe. I think it was something to the effect of; Life suffocates you but I will help you breathe. The smoke represents those suffocating elements of life today, and then they run into fresh air and freedom; I want to breathe.
