Congrats. Thats a great and unexpected achievement to grow pomegranate to ripeness in NJ. The fruit looks a really good size and the arils have a beautiful colour to them. Well done. 👍🏽🙌🏽
I would say it's more tart than "wonderful" and I've been disappointed by store poms lately. They are underripe, and sometimes bitter. The best store bought pom I've had so far has been "sweetheart" which is a soft seeded variety. Surprisingly it came from walmart. The afganski is good, considering it can grow this far north. Next year if I get fruit sooner, I bet they will ripen more and the flavor will improve (not that it's bad, but I am thinking it will be less tart than sweet when fully ripe).
Hi those are good varieties. The parfianka and the russian should do okay, with the Russian being the most cold hary of the 3. The wonderful unfortunately will not survive most winters here unless you protect it, it's the least hardy of the 3. That one you can grow in a container instead and move it inside for the winter and back out in the spring. Are you also in zone 7? I am assuming you will be planting them in the ground. If you plant them in a pot you will have to bring them indoors
@@raregrowsNJ I’m in zone 6B ,North NJ , I wanted to plant them in ground, if needed probably wrap the trunks for the first 3 years hopefully they survive.
@@raregrowsNJ I’m in zone 6B , was planning to plant all 3 at SW corner by a pvc fence & cover the trunks with burlap & mulch over roots, experiment & hopefully they fruit.
@@hamitfusha710 good idea planting in a sheltered spot, as you can see my main plant is against that retaining wall which adds extra heat. i think you will be fine in 6b with the two russian varieties. the Wonderful is definitely not a zone 7a plant let alone 6b, but maybe with the burlap you can get away with it. keep us updated!
@@raregrowsNJ I'm in central NJ near Rutgers growing one rite now took it out the pot this year had it for about 2 years in the pot. Yours is beautiful I picked mine too early this year inside was white smh 2nd year in a row. Smh
@@CashNYC seeds won't give you the same fruit, I actually have rooted cuttings on my Etsy store from this exact plant. If you want to wait until spring that will be better because if I ship it now the roots might freeze in the mail. My Etsy store is the same name as RUclips. Cheers!

There's a few more hardy types I need to experiment with, as well as soft seeded and early. I'm glad this particular variety lived up to the claims
