Cats do that not to ask for belly rubs they do it to show that they really trust you and love you. Cats are very exposed when showing their belly, so when they are exposing themselves they trust you won’t attack them, so rubbing their bellies would be considered an attack to them

I have an EXTREMELY friendly cat who loves being petted almost anywhere.. his name's Ginger and he is an angel.. he doesn't mind cuddling.. just call him and he'll plop right down next to you and you can stroke him for as long as you like.. I love him with a burning passion.
I always break contact before he gets annoyed when I pet my cat...I think their are several types of petting, when hes tired and going to sleep soon, it's a slow methodic petting session. When he's happy and running around, it's a quicker massage type sessions.... My cats a rescue cat, and for some reason his belly is off limits!!! And that's OK...

Some cats don't like long full body strokes. I would recommend stretching out your hand to them and letting them sniff you and rub your hand with their cheeks. Then you can pet them gently on the head, but not aggressive long body strokes :) I have a cat and it loves rubbing and sniffing my hands

A lot of cats rub their cheeks against you if they want to claim you. Scent glands are in their cheeks. If you look at a cat and keep eye contact, blinking slowly, they will know that you love them.

there are so many kittens in shelters because cats aren't spayed/neutered. getting your cat spayed/neutered can really help decrease the numbers of kittens in shelters.

I have two cats, both female, sisters in fact which were raised by me since two weeks old cause the mother was run over. Even though they were raised similarly they have very different preferences with nearly anything. While one likes to be full on cuddled and held in my arms the other prefers long strokes over the back where she can get away any time and freely choose the amount of attention she wants.
So there is no absolute right or wrong it's just about getting to know your cat.

My girl loves a pat but I call her belly “the trap”. She stretches way out on her back, enticingly exposing her fluffy little tum but SNAPs up with teeth and back legs catching my hand to kick and give love bites lol. She keeps doing it and I keep falling for it 😁

My yellow tom likes to be gently patted on the back. He likes to be scratched around the head and neck. If very relaxed, he obviously indicates it's ok to pet his belly. You just have to tune in to his behavior cues. Especially the subtle indicator called biting and scratching the crap outta me....
My neighbour's foster kitten never cares where you pet her. Although petting her in her belly was difficult because that would often initiate playfighting. Then again, just moving anything in front of that little kitty could initiate playfighting. She'd often come to our back door just to see if I was there for a play session. I miss her. Just the way her innocent little face would peek inside just to check if I was there.
You should've adopted the cat then, seeing how much you enjoyed its company.

I think this is some excellent advice. Especially, practicing love, respect, and patience. My Lucy come from an abusive home. When I first got her, she would for no reason, bite my face. Some times drawing blood! I would absolutely not do anything, but say loudly say NO! Then walk away. It took awhile for the biting to stop. But it did. The worst thing she does now is paw slap me. She takes her paw, claws in, and brushes my cheek. If I am being a total idiot? Lucy takes a little bit of my hair in mouth, and gently tugs. Far cry from the cat that was dumped off at door with a litter box and half a bag of cat food. Then hid from me for 2 months.

Actually i searched this because from many days a cat is roaming around our house and she is crying so much i don't know what happened to her maybe she is hungry or she is cold. I even gave her food a week ago and since that she has recoginised me like she has observed me and even i named her MOMO♡ but now i wanna really pet her in my house! Our cat loves to have the bridge of her nose scratched up and down. I make a point of finishing with a downward scratch or pet to leave the nose fur as it was, going with the grain.

I have found that when you reach to pet from above, it can often seem threatening. Whether you are dealing with an old friend or a new acquaintance to put your hand below the chin line and allow them to rub against you like they would a box or wall eases the stress of being mauled by the great big human. 🐈
Good point about not coming in from above. One of my cats used to be very nervous when humans would loom over her. Fortunately, we humans noticed, and quit looming

All cats are different, my Babycakes for example loves rather hard pats on her bottom near the tail and soft ear massages. She gets bored with long strokes and totally hates scratches on her back or bottom. My sister's tabby on the other hand loves long strokes, scratches behind the ears and soft pats on his bottom. He also likes when resting to be petted on his belly with long soft strokes, he purrs really loud while sleeping. With my baby we do have to be very careful not to over excite her or she bites, not too hard but she does... Or becomes "crazy" wanting to play and run around. When I want to start her motor for playing I do it a little and she loves it. Sometimes she has bitten my hand when I don't pat her strong enough

I rescued a cat that was about 7 weeks old the other day. Yesterday he let me pet him, but todat when I pet him his body language says that he likes it, but he takes his claws and puts him arm in the air as if reaching for the stars, his claws are also out when he's on my lap, which doesn't usually happen. My boy has known and trusted me long enough that he doesn't mind gentle belly rubs, a bit of gentle squeezing, petting the tail, heavy pats on the body, and petting against the fur (I always end by petting with the fur when I'm done). Is my cat weird? There have been times I've noticed the irritated body language but he's never intentionally hurt me. He might have nipped at me or accidentally scratched me at times but the most he's done was walk away. He practically forces his way onto my lap half the time so I might be doing something right lol

Alright so I don't know if this is a bug or what , but I got a reply update in my inbox but when I checked to reply it didn't appear, but nonetheless, her name is ninja because the first day we found her, she leaped into our arms and started purring, so we had to take her to a party because the party owner knew how to take care of a cat.
