Ha, ha! This was definitely before I had any real idea of what I was doing when it came to mixing drums, and so it was just fun to go for maximum boomage! I still hold a soft spot in my heart for how massive this one sounds!

Ha, ha! Well, the steering wheel kit is the most unforgiving of all the drums! You're not kidding about this song being a beast, though. I absolutely love playing this one! It feels like everything great about Bonham all wrapped up into one song! Great sense of creativity in his composition, great groove, great recording of the drums, and overall, leading to a great sense of personality that makes the song shine even brighter!

Arran Graham Hypnotic is a great word for it! I feel the same way about most of Bonham's drum parts. There is a quality about them that lours me in more than almost any other drummer. The only other drummer that has the same effect on me is Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews Band. He has the same musical quality and sense of groove that Bonham had, even if the styles of music are very different. I think Bonham and Beauford are cut from the same cloth...
@@KickItLikeBonham you are very welcomed.. i'm a singer and have been dying to sing this song for years, so desperate in fact that i found a half decent backing track here on you tube where the guitar is ok i guess but i can tell that the drum track is off in the background somewhere w/ zero umff. so i brought it into to pro tools to line it up w/ midi (superior drummer).. and what a mess i had to sort out but i got it sounding ok enough to sing to but its not sounding as zeppish as i would love it to be but i suppose it will have to do for now. thanx so much for your speedy response and plz keep kicking like Bonham and i\ll be sure to stay tuned.
This is bad ass. One suggestion would be to have multiple cameras? There's a Bernard Purdie video I like to watch, an educational vid before a class and the camera changes. He has one above him to the left. It might mean more editing for you, but it would be a cool perspective.

That bass drum is INSANE. The whole kit for that matter is ridiculous. One of the best sounding kits. Theres a clip of Abe Labourial j.r using that bass drum mike on his toms and they sound amazing. Maybe give it a try and youll see a difference. Just an idea on maybe improving on an already ungodly drum sound. Oh yeah, youre playing is amazing.

@@KickItLikeBonham I honestly don't think I could part with it. Its an '08 one off Alan Gilby/Richmo Drums kit. Built to Bonhams Ludwig specs and finished in abalone a la Buddy Rich. All the lugs etc are custom made and it is (was) a joy to play. I've just lost my mojo a bit,but hoping it will come back lol.
Thanks! I've had a blast messing around with the recording equipment. I don't have a mic on the batter side of the kick. I just put the mic on the resonant side about 8-10" away from the head, and that seems to focus the sound so that you're not just picking up a bunch of resonance.

I think out of all the kits the SS late 70's kit sounds the most focused and cutting.

Aye! When I play with Led Zepagain, we'll throw the D112 on the 18" floor tom sometimes, and it really is a great mic for that, too! You're right!
