I have a similar set up as you.. however, I am getting output a different way. I have an HDMI ARC 2.0 cable from my Onkyo receiver to my 2018 LG HDMI ARC port. I simply then have my Xbox into a different HDMI port on my tv.
I notice the surround sound when using this set up. Is there something I am missing?

ARC is wonky with surround. It's wonky in general. I'm currently experiencing the same issue. I have to choose 5.1 or 4k. Apparently, an optical cable is the way to go. That way, you can have the Xbox plugged directly into the TV and still get 5.1.

@ All About Home Electronics - I have a question, but first I want to thank you for the really thorough explanation. It's been a decade since my last purchase of a new home av receiver, and wow, I'm I finding this challenging. I am trying to get Dolby Atmos, and I bought all the equipment (7.1.2 speakers, Yamaha 683 receiver, etc.), set it up, and then learned that my 2 yr old Samsung 4k TV doesn't process Dolby Atmos or DTS. So, I did some research and found that the XBox One S would process those surround decoders (thought I could use the XBox as my BluRay/streaming platform). I watched this video and tried to hook it up last night with no luck. I used an ARC enabled HDMI cable for the connection between the television and the receiver, but used an ordinary HDMI cable (1080) for the connection between XBox and receiver. It began to work, the receiver recognized the XBox, but it began to do a color correction and then the set up showed that I needed to check the source or make sure the source was connected. To make a very long story short, is this because of the substandard HDMI cable?

Hi, I'm hoping you can assist me regarding your video, I also have a similar setup as you, the only difference is that my Yamaha receiver isn't 4k compatible and that's where my problem is. I have connected my Xbox s to a HDMI splitter(1x2) and then to my 4k TV. The other output connection goes to the amp but once I do that the TV does not display 4k content. On the Xbox settings it says that the tv isn't 4k.But when I connect directly to the tv without using the splitter the settings come up saying the tv is now 4k.How can I enjoy 4k content and at the same time utilizing my Yamaha on screen capabilities? Thanking you in advance for any help you can offer.

Just bought the Xbox series S holiday deal tried to run it thru my pioneer sc-71 receiver older model upscales to 4k I'm not too concerned about picture quality. My issue is I can set it to pass through and shut it off then the sound cuts in and out on the TV I've went thru just about every setting I can go through changed the HDMI cable for a 4K one and even hooked it directly to my tv to make sure it wasn't in general the Xbox the only time I can get it to play sound from the TV running thru the receiver is if the receiver is turned on once I shut it off sound constantly cuts in and out. If it's turned off it automatically assumes it's 2Ch stereo on the TV but even messing with the Samsung tv settings it only works with the receiver on. So I guess unless I buy a new receiver or somehow find the issue playing around with it that's my only solution. If anyone else has had similar issues or knows something specifically on pioneer receivers I can check please reply I'd love to learn more I normally don't play these video games but little guy does I just like to use my receiver because it's easier to access for maintenance or switching cables out when one goes bad.

I have HDMI chord going from receiver to Tv ( ARC) connection. Now I have my Xbox one X HDMI chord going from the X box to the TV. Now I get surround sound working with the Xbox watching movie or gaming , but they say I am not getting the full affect. Do I need a second HDMI chord going from Xbox one X to receiver as well as the optical cable from receiver to Xbox to ensure I am getting best quality sound ? I feel like it should be louder with 7 speakers hooked up

So if I’m understanding this the trade off is that using the Arc input on HDMI one between the tv and receiver sacrifices HDR10 viewing in the XBox One S. If you want the HDR10 gaming experience you would need to connect the Xbox to HDMI 1 Arc>go to settings>Expert Viewing>turn on HDR in HDMI 1, right? Is there a way around this?
