    Thanks so much for very clear instructions.
    I purchased a Sony Bravia tv and was attempting to hook up a dvr and avr with what I now know were obsolete hdmi cables. Having wasted hours trying a host of different connections and either getting audio, no video or the other way around I was seriously thinking of chucking the avr out!
    Your explanation of the optical cord option solved my issue in 2 minutes (after finding the correct input settings on the Pioneer avr).
    I was contemplating shelling out a few hundred for a sound bar. So glad I found your video!

    I watched about seven or eight videos on the same subject and they were so poorly done that I had to turn them off prematurely. Then I watched this instructional video. What a difference! Truly excellent. Professionally done. Clear explanations. Showed all of the options and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of each option. Also pointed out the importance of the right cable for each option. That's the trouble with RUclips, one will obtain a super high quality instructional videos such as this one followed by six or seven really bad ones. Thank you for a professionally done, most excellent instructional video on how to connect up a smart TV to an AVR.

    Thank you for this helpful video! I was like 5 steps from wits end trying to connect my LGTV to my Receiver using ARC. Didn't realize that the TV has a specific ARC port. I thought all of them were the same. One quick change and setup later and now I can control my receiver with my Magic Remote. Appreciate the tutorial!

    • @Blackdog4818
      @Blackdog4818 3 года назад +2

      Me too. I have a new LG C1 and I can't make it work on ARC for my Sony receiver's speakers to work. Brand new cord. What was the solution Jeff? Did you buy a specific "ARC" cord? I'm using a new high speed cord. This TV has no white/red connections.

    • @Blackdog4818
      @Blackdog4818 3 года назад +1

      In a Sony DH-950 receiver, there's standard setting, which is where my old Sony Bravia was set to automatically, and then "enhanced" which is the 4k mode. You must switch it, or you won't get sound on the new TV's with an ARC connection.

    • @JeffJSays
      @JeffJSays 3 года назад +2

      @@Blackdog4818 Hey! I used a regular HDMI cord and connected it to the ARC ports on the receiver and the HDMI. Then ran the sound setup on the LG. On my Yamaha, I set the ARC audio to "Audio 1". That solved a lot of problems. It will disconnect from time to time but if I switch back to audio 1, Im straight

    • @Blackdog4818
      @Blackdog4818 3 года назад +2

      Yeah, that's probably the 4k mode. You might want to read the instructions like I should have. You can usually find them online with a search. I found my Sony DH-590 full manual, and found that there were 2 settings, and only one works with 4k. Could be the same way with the Yamaha Amp as well.

    • @Blackdog4818
      @Blackdog4818 3 года назад +2

      And then if you figure out the right ARC connection, you have to make sure you're not on surround sound, or you'll get the music and background audio but no dialog. I had to switch my 2 stand speakers (not a sound bar) to "2 channel" vs. "5.1 surround". If I accidentally touch surround sound on my receiver, it cuts out the dialog. LOL.

    Great video! I have struggled for years to connect my old (vintage) HK AVR to our Samsung "SmartTV." So, now I can actually hear FM radio (I made a simple antenna that works!), connect to my DVD, use AirPlay (with RocketFish adapter) to connect iPhone/iPad to receiver and watch on TV. I did not watch the entire video, so I don't know if you covered how to set-up so that the AirPlay sound comes out my speakers, rather than the TV speakers.

    Old but gold 👍 I wish you have explained that you loose surround sound with toslink. Most TVs also today only provide PCM2.0 signal (stereo) and then it is up to the AVR reciever to transcode the signal over to surround.
    Some TVs do provide pass thru, but not many.
    This is why it is best to use HDMI with ARC.
    Please also be aware that not all apps installed on smart TVs output surround. So check that too, if you have issues 🙂

What would be the signal flow between the three of them, and the connections I would make. (I’ll be adding in a Xfinity box and a DVD player a ways down the road.)
    Edit: I also wanted to add that the signal is coming into the tv from it being connected to the WiFi in the house.

    Good video. I have an receiver where I just want to play music or radio through a sound bar ( not as a home theatre) . I don’t have hdmi on the back of the receiver but do have optical outlets . I hooked up the receiver via optical cable ( out) to back of sound bar ( in) but no luck . Is this even a possibility for it to work? If so, I’m thinking it may be some channel that I have to figure out by trial and error. Thanks for your video

I was thinking to connect a mixer in between TV optical out and A/V receiver. Will be possible? So when watching movies I choose HDMI port and when singing karaoke I choose optical sound input from the mixer?

    Excellent video for connecting samsung TV with arc hdmi to my yamaha receiver but I have a probably silly question but I'll ask it anyway. I currently have a regular hdmi cable hdmi2 between my yamaha receiver and my TV with all my peripheral devices connected to the receiver on other hdmi ports. Currently I have no sound from the smart TV apps to my receiver and from what I can ascertain it's because I need to use the arc hdmi with a high speed hdmi cable or an optical cable to get the sound. If I use arc hmdi does that mean I don't need the hdmi2 setup for video or is the arc hdmi strictly for audio?

    If I buy a dolby atmos 4K but not 8K compatible avr, and in the future upgrade to a 8K tv, could i then connect the devices to the TVs HDMI (e.g. a 8K blue ray player) and then use ARC to connect the tv to the receiver and still get dolby atmos from blue ray player sent to avr?
    If I were to connect it to the avr, i would lose 8K video, but not if connect to the tv (assuming 8K tv hdmi's ports are 8K compatible) Hope that makes sense

But for channel for my blue ray player connected with HDMI is fine I did also connected the hdmi arc in order to play blue ray to tv. Is this correct ? Instead of optic to bring the audio signal to AVR , I don’t prefer to use HDMI so that I only use the AVR for certain tv programmes. Is the sound normal to come out from part of speakers only in the system!

    This Video was helpful but I have a problem regarding streaming. The house we bought in 2014 had a pretty involved entertainment system. It had a remote AV system (Marantz 5009) in a small closet in our frog along with the router and modem. As long as we were using cable, the 5.1 and the TV in the living room worked well but after many years of the rising prices of services, we went over to a Roku. At that point, we lost the 5.1 and only had the TV speakers. (Samsung vintage 2014 and couldn't add apps) Quality was not the same. Started reading up on HDMI transmitter/ receivers and purchased one with extended range. ( TV to AV and receiver was over 40' and 2 walls.) The AV had a CBL/Sat input and a monitor output to TV. Plugged the receiver into the CBL/Sat input on the AV with 5v power cord. I plugged the transmitter directly into the Roku and plugged both 5V power cords off the Roku and transmitter into the 2 USB ports in the back of the TV. I set the TV sound to Audio out and made some adjustments on AV remote and amazingly, It all worked!!! We now can enjoy both great tv movie and music sound.

    Just connect your TV to receiver by digital audio out, and everything else plugged into hdmi on your tv. It works with no muss or fuss. Even you PC sound will work in multi-channel (Dolby, DTS, etc) sound. Most people can't tell the difference in sound quality. You'll even get multi-Channel sound from RUclips. Even though they only broadcast in stereo. Your receiver or TV will change it into surround sound.

    This Is a good video, but I have a question. Is the ARC hdmi plug in the back of the receiver by-directional. Thinking the main reason for the setup is if the tv is streaming by wifi, you still want to send the audio from the tv over to the receiver. This makes good sense, but here comes my question when hooking up a dvd player. If I plug the DVD player into separate hdmi port on the receiver, will the same hdmi cable attached to the tv also send over the dvd video (to the TV?). In newer houses they have a ton of mill work around the fireplace. I'm not sure If I need to run 2 hdmi's from the receiver to the tv or just 1? Also I know I would need to run 1 hdmi from dvd player to the receiver, but I guess you could run hdmi from the dvd player to hdmi 1 on the tv, and it would back feed the audio to receiver on the ARC connection. Would be nice to have another video with dvd player in the mix

Problem, after connecting, my video flutters on and and off. My sound does the same as in no signal. At times, the video will run for awhile, but the sound turns off pc msg speakers disconnected.
    Just setting up all channel stereo. I also tried running cable from my audio output jacks on the pc labeled Rear L/R surround port, front L/R surround port. I don't use the 3'rd port labeled Center/Subwoofer LFE surround port. What approach would you recommend? PS, I just subscribed to your channel after watching this video. Would appreciate any advice you have. Thank you, Bill St. Amour

    You should show a regular analog dolby surround setup, some people still have those and you can get surround through that. The down is that its just Dolby Pro Logic Surround. Now I think that is a good option if you have a bigger old Dolby Surround Pro Logic AVR. Many of those AVR's have sound fields and options that you just don't see on the simple AVRs of today. Also the new ones are cannot use a tape deck, only play but not for recording. Some of us still have older stuff. This is why I am going to keep with just dolby pro logic surround, it's way simpler and connects to the most components.

You didn't state it this way, but what I believe I need to do is, connect both my Cable TV box and Blue Ray Player to my Onkyo "Receiver" via HDMI. Then using a "high speed" HDMI cable, connect the HDMI ARC "OUT" from the receiver to the HDMI ARC "IN" on the LG TV.
    The Cable TV and Blue Ray would NOT be directly connected to the LG TV. Is this correct ?

      That is an optimal connection method (all devices direct to Onkyo), yes. It’s not the only method but it’s an optimal method. Use high speed HDMI in every connection

    I enjoyed your video very much and realize that I need a high speed HDMI. How is your Demo tv connected to the cable box? How would the cable info come to the receiver?

      Its just a regular HDMI connection. The 4K TV will upconvert the HD signal to 4K, with possibly a slightly better looking picture hopefully.

    I picked up an older Yamaha receiver (2) that had hdmi ports (thinking I would upgrade my old Yamaha receiver (1) (sans hdmi). After watching this I found I have no hdmi arc on this receiver 2. I’m running digital optical on receiver 1. Am I better to just stay with what I had (receiver 1 with digital optical)?

    My connection rules go like this: Any device where the audio is at or below the capabilities of ARC (5.1) gets connected directly to the television. For me that’s a Gen2 Apple TV, a VHS VCR, and an old DVD player/recorder. My cable box gets connected to the AVR unit, so its 7.1 (and beyond) audio capabilities can be best utilized. With the Apple TV and the DVD and VCR, I also have direct digital audio to the AVR. This is for instances where those devices might be used for audio-only, and not need anything onscreen. With OTA of course I lose 7.1, but all those channels are available via cable anyway. But sometimes I use OTA anyway, because the lack of compression artifacts makes the viewing experience more enjoyable.

      when you say watching direct, do you mean DirecTV? the reason for the question is, if you are using an external source from a service provider, probably the sound is connected directly to the AVR, and that's why you get sound from it. but when you change to an internal TV app, say, RUclips, Pandora, or Netflix, these are internal functions of the TV, but your tv is connected as an output, not as a source, that's why you don't get sound from those apps. So, what do we do? check the back of the tv and see if you see the word ARC next to any of the HDMI inputs, normally only one of them is ARC, and not necessarily is HDMI1, on my LGtv is HDMI2. next, check if the "HDMI out" of your AVR is marked with "ARC" , if both of them are marked ARC, it means that you should connect those two together and watch everything through that particular input on your TV (you'll also have to make sure that you go to the TV settings and choose ARC or Digital out from the tv) If only one, or none of your your devices have ARC, the next thing to check for is, if the tv has a "optical output" if so, connect yout tv to the AVR, with and optical cable in addition to the HDMI, then, whenever you want to watch youtube videos with your stereo system all you do is change the input on your AVR to match where you connected the optical cord. this cords are cheaper on amazon, than at your local Best Buy.

      @@antoniocuautle7742 why do you plug both hdmi and optical? Wouldn't optical by itself be sufficient? Is there a benefit such as audio lag?

    Just a note, if your old receiver has analog RCA input, and the TV has opto output, for about 15 bucks for a converter, opto in analog out. Cheap dirty , and works

    Hello! I have been trying for about 4 years to connect my Philips HTS3544/37 DVD home theater system to my LG smart TV to no avail. The receiver does not have an optical option but has HDMI (arc) and coaxial inputs/outputs. I also have a cable box and wireless box connected. I get surround sound with my cable programs but not with my TV/wireless Apps such as Hulu and Netflix. I tried the HDMI arc connection option, but I am still not getting sound output when watching the Apps. Could you please help and tell me what I am doing wrong? It's a great sound system and I don't want to throw it out. Thanks!

    So if I have a 2009 Sony Home Theater DVD player, I would use and HDMI cable for video and then a Toslink for audio, correct? I just bought a 2018 Samsung Smart TV NU6900. It ONLY has HDMI and Toslink, no old RCA jacks like the Sony surround. The Sony surround does have an HDMI jack (NOT ARC like on the TV though) and a Toslink. Can you advise?

    I’m wondering where to hook up or to connect my 3.5mm jack stereo speaker with subwoofer to the back of avr

  • @theeverythingelectronicsst3897

    Hello, my AVR is almost identical, I have a Yamaha RX V573.. I have Radio, Bluray but no audio for cable, my TV is a Sharp Aquous LCD.. The HDMI ports on the back of the tv are numbered 4-7. I have an HDMI Cable going from HDMi out on the receiver to an HDMI port on my tv, an HDMI cable running from Bluray to the AVR.. I tried moving things around, but my Bluray was showing up twice on the HDMI input list on my tv, one input was the bluray video playing no sound, and the other was the audio for the bluray no video lol, so I out everything back lol but still can't resolve the issue with my cable box..Great video and thanks a bunch :)

    I hook the speakers up plug my audio optical cable in but did not hook up a HDMI cable from the TV to the AVR. I guess I need to hook the audio optical cable from the TV into the TV input on the AVR and get a high speed HDMI cable to go in my HDMI port and then go to the AVR should that do it?

    Dumb question so please excuse me.
    i not sure if i get it yet.
    If i where to buy for instance the Onkyo TX-NR676 (or something similar), and Use a 5.1.2 setup.
    If i connect my TV to the Receiver using HDMI ARC (tv supports it to)
    If i then connect my PC, Playstion and Xbox ONLY to my TV using HDMI, will i then still get the sound via the Reciever??
    Or do i still need to connect the individually to the receiver and tv?

    I connected my Yamaha RX-680A receiver to my recently purchased Samsung QN90A television using a high-speed HDMI cable. Despite running it from the ARC output of the receiver into the ARC input of the TV, I'm still getting no sound out of my stereo system. I tried all the input settings on the receiver, but none of them worked. I also checked the settings on the TV to make sure ARC was enabled (it was). I may try an optical audio cable, but I'm worried that the audio and video may not be in sync. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hey again, i have a denon 2300w receiver and a panasonic 820 4k player and a samsung 900b. What is the best way to connect all three to get lossless audio through my speakers and 4k to my tv, i know the 820 has two hdmi outputs one is audio and one is video , would i connect hdmi audio out to receiver and the hdmi video out straight to tv or would i use the passthough on the receiver with one hdmi cable to receiver, or is there another way. Any help would be great. Thanks again...Phil
