Do you know how to connect an optical cable to a tv and use an old system to play surround such as where to connect
Great Scott: HDMI will give you both picture and sound in the HIGHEST quality available you do not need to use optical fiber cable ( the wire with the red light on each end ) all you need is one HDMI cable for each component cable box, game console, DVD, etc...
Mario Lets say you have a projector and you wanted to connect all these hdmi devices to to it, you can't because there is just 1 or2 hdmi ports on the projector. So it's just better to connect everything into the receiver and have 1 hdmi out to the projector. TVs may not also have enough hdmi's to connect all of your components. Lastly one remote is just needed to switch between sources for efficiency.
@Mario it depends on the tv itself. a lot of samsung tv's will not send 5.1 when you hook HDMI to the tv then optical to the receiver. it's a weird thing, but you will find cheap receivers on ebay that have the hdmi pass through.
I have an old Sony Receiver STR-DE635 that does not have an HMDI. I can only use color-coded pins, an Optical audio cable, and a Coaxial digital chord. Is there a solution that I can still use my old receiver to hook up my DVD player and my 6 Bose speakers with my new TV that only has HDMI? Please help. Thanks. By the way, what is the Model number of the Sony receiver used in the demonstration?
If you have a new TV that has only hdmi, it should still have optical audio out. The easiest thing to do if you can afford one is upgrade your receiver to one with hdmi and Arc or eArc(newer ones with eArc should be both i.e eArc and Arc"backward compatible"). eArc does same thing as ARC but also supports over 5.1,Dolby Atmos, DTS-X for larger speaker numbers highest sound bandwidth, etc buy ARC (audio return channel via hdmi) is sufficient for 5.1 surround sound most home theater systems. If you don't want to spend money on new receiver right now, yes you probably can set up your DVD player to run on your old receiver as long as the DVD player has hdmi out and should have an optical audio out as well like the tv. If your DVD player is so old it doesn't have hdmi, get a new one, get a blu-ray player which plays blu-ray, DVD, and CDS! They are very affordable and have what you need. Connect the DVD hdmi out to a TV hdmi in, connect the DVD optical out to one of the stereo receiver optical inputs. Setup menu in the blu-ray/ DVD player will allow you to set the audio output to optical instead of hdmi. Thus wat the video goes to the tv via hdmi and the audio goes to the receiver via optical, then on the TV, select your hdmi input source for the DVD, and on the receiver set the source to the corresponding optical input. I used to have this type setup with an old Technics receiver that didn't have hdmi and it worked great.
Thanks for the wonderful tutor explanation video but I like to ask you if you can help me to add the dual wireless mic to use in the same 5.1 home theatre setup for karaoke purpose. What kind of cable/s or other components do I need and where should I connect to which in the back of the ARV Receiver. Please help. Thanks again.
When placing bluray with dolby true hd or dts hd Sony recognizes the signal but there is no gain in audio quality. It looks like it continues on the basic dolby or dts 5.1 Is this normal on this device? Does the reset solve? Any idea? Congratulations on the video.

Yes in tv and amplifier is have to be hdmi ARC and yet is must be good hdmi then ARC will works, no problem, like i use it with my Yamaha av amplifier, ARC may not work with bad hdmi
Exactly right man, if tv support hdmi ARC and amplifier too, no need optical at all, i use it, both is is must support it and yet is must be good hdmi in between, it will works, with bad hdmi may not work
if your receiver is a 5.1 receiver, you won't be able to add 2 more to make it a 7.1. tho if you want to jimmy it it's simple. just splice your rear or front cable to another front set, then get another speaker cable, and connect it to the receiver. tho i think when you do that, it eats some of the wattage.
Good thing I got a receiver without thousands of hdmi's . I only need the 5.2 setup for the surround sound and my TV. Seen other people connecting their xbox, ps 4, blu ray player, cd player and whatnot. Damn they got a lot of things to connect. I keep it simple.
@@briangraham9646 Sorry bro, I'm pc master race :D I got them hooked up to my PC and only using the receiver when using the TV, otherwise just monitor and headphones. Im still debating why people are still using blu rays when they're not even using them. Certainly, its better quality and you'll keep the dvd's 4ever, but marginal for a lot of expense. Netflix or Prime or if you know the free stuff, its all good. You still get the surround effects. Now, a playstation/xbox will actually be better than a blu ray since you're getting way more things, so I see why people have that.
i am going to say it is probably for if you are getting an aerial signal. aerial to the tv, then optical to the receiver, that being said. if you are using an aerial in 2019, you seriously need to question yourself.
@@ronsonroll you don't need to put it in the sat/cable port, all hdmi ports on these receivers are neutral. they accept same signal from each. it's just labeled that way so idiots won't forget.
the digital audio is if you don't have an arc connection on the back of your TV. like if you were to use the in app smart tv apps. such as youtube or netflix. arc is a two way format, so if you have arc on your tv, and don't use a device. but just watch netflix on your smart TV. you can use either arc which sends sound to your receiver, or an optical digital cable if your tv doesn't have arc.
@@demonpride1975 My old receiver doesn't have arc but does have digital audio. However, when I connect this receiver to my tv using only digital audio (toslink) I don't get any sound when using spotify or local movies. Are you saying this is supposed to work?
@@Heinous303 if you are connecting the toslink from your tv to the receiver, that should send audio to it. i would recommend making sure the cable isn't cracked, as these toslink cables are delicate.
optical allows for higher quality of audio to be sent to the receiver, because it doesn't have to convert from digital to analog in the HDMI cables and then back to digital for the speakers
I have had 4 home theater systems throughout the years and will say they were all terrible. Much of the time you have to have it up so loud to hear the talking then something happens it is so loud, you reach for the volume to turn it down. Seemed to me you would do better with a volume joystick than remote. I will say I spent a lot of money on audio equipment and had nice systems, still do. I always seemed to go back to stereo mode because it sounded best without all the echoing. Do yourself a favor and buy a good sound bar and sub woofer for TV. Spend the good money on a stereo receiver and speakers. Music sounds better in stereo mode also. BTW, my last theater system was a Sony. It had a lot of options in theater mode but none sounded better than stereo mode. And yes, I set it up with the microphone in different locations. Finally went back to Yamaha system and love it.
We have the same experience with ours - can barely hear the voices or Dialogue in movies so you ramp the volume up, but then an explosion or action scene takes place and the volume is deafening. Movies become unwatchable because there’s no sound clarity with the dialogue.
Agreed, it can be a hassle ! Still enjoy the old 5.1 surround... something very cool about hearing the distinct sound of front to back, left to right and center speaker separation... with a 300W sub. making the walls rattle Lol...✌
Why would you plug a optical cable if your sound is coming out of the stereo and not the tv? If everything is connected to the stereo you don't need sound coming out of the tv. There's nothing connected to the tv
King_ Yodeep I thought the same thing. There's no need for the optical cable if you're running the signal from the ps3 to the receiver. The receiver is processing the audio while routing the video to the TV. Also, optical cables can only send 6 channels (5.1). If you want to do more than 5.1 you're going to need a hdmi cable. The only reason I run an optical cable from my TV to my receiver is for when I'm using built in apps on my TV, such as Netflix or Spotify. It's all about signal routing. Source to destination.
My rear surround speakers crackle and sound like bass is trying to go through them during bass parts of movie...i have two subs also hooked up and bass comes from them as well but sounds as it should...shouldn't sound only come through my rears during surround parts not bass parts of a movie? Im using the sony 7.2
i am a bit confused, why are you using optical to go back to the receiver, when you are already using the receivers HDMI pass through. the whole point to the pass through, is so the receiver gets the audio from the HDMI, and then you send the tv signal to the TV through the HDMI out port on the back of the receiver, you do not need an optical cable to go back to the receiver.
Exactly I just watched it and laughed you see this type of video with wrong information can cost people extra money out of pocket unnecessary. To funny my gold plated 4k Ultra HDMI cable is arriving today from AMAZON YUP ONE CABLE FOR BEST PICTURE AND "SOUND"
I found a old str dg510 but it has only 3 HDMI slots and 1 digital optical video (not audio) slot. And does it have a remote? I want to make a little home theater setup🙂
The back of mine looks like mission control at NASA. Doesn't look like this one. I just need to know to where the speakers hook up. I hope it's not those that require speaker jacks to plug in. My speakers require spring clips or something like them.
If your receiver is much older it may not have hdmi audio return, or if it is newer, you may need to enable it on both the receiver and the tv. Varies by receiver and manufacturer but if the hdmi monitor out has ARC, you don't necessarily have to have the optical. Look up your receiver brand/model/year and see if it supports ARC. Lots of videos on RUclips about ARC.
What kind of cable do I need for the subwoofer? Is it RCA on both ends, or is it y-cable with two RCA in on end with "headphone connector on the other end?
I'm using the STR-DN1050 and I'm running Wharfedale diamond 220's all around with the front set bi-wired and a wharfedale 150 sub, the sound quality and power of this set up is unbelievable, make sure you use good quality speaker cable. Hope this helps.
no the receiver is just that a receiver, hdmi is a neutral signal, the receiver doesn't know if it's just sony, but that it is an hdmi signal. that's why receivers can be bought by themselves. and you can using any speakers, unless of course the speakers that sony has designed come with special features for said receiver.
But how can I connect my microphone to my Sony home theater to my Samsung tu7000 series model 2020? If I used Bluetooth to make videoke why my microphone don't have sound? But if I removed the Bluetooth the mic have sound,

So the signal path is source (PS3) > amp > television > amp? Isn't that redundant? Wouldn't source > television > amp make much more sense, and remove an unnecessary HDMI cable?
If you want audio and video from the ps3, you would go from ps3 to receiver to tv. If you want audio to go to speakers plug them into the receiver as well and you would only send the video to the tv.
the way you do it is simple. source, amp then tv. you don't need a return cable. that's the point to the hdmi pass through. i am betting the return optical is for aerial.
if you have say a set of pc speakers that have an optical port on them, that would work. like say the logitech z5500, they have optical in so you could connect them to the speakers.
i just have an optical cable going from my TV to my receiver, why do i need an hdmi going from reciever to TV, doesnt the optical take care of the sound?? im confused
@Curt ¡s when you don't have any clue what you are talking, please don't talking. This is optical Toslink for digital audio streams. He needed HDMI also because of the video transfer. At the time not every TV had HDMI with ARC functionality (audio return channel)
If your TV have a HDMI port with ARC then you don't need the optical cable. This video is 5 years old. Nowadays you only need HDMI for audio and video. However, both the AV receiver HDMI port and the TV must have the additional HDMI ARC.
if your receiver doesn't have an eq built in, you would have to buy one and plug it in the back. a lot of receivers will have them built in, even more so the ones with pre amps.
My computer Doesn't have Bluetooth ... And I have my PC plugged into HDMI Port one..... And I want to make this Bluetooth , for my Bluetooth headphones. I just purchased a Bluetooth Receiver, And I don't know what port to use .....What input would I plug into?
it's more for smart tv's that don't have an arc hdmi port. if you do you don't need the optical. it's basically for smart tv's that don't have the arc hdmi port, as arc sends sound both ways.
Would having a digital optical cable coming from an Xbox to a receiver be useless or it is strictly from the receiver to the tv ? If anyone know thanks.
See my problem is this and I pray someone can help everything works fine music back ground sound everything except when I put in a blue ray or DVD I can hear everything except the people talking I can hear the action going on but not the dialogue help please
that's why it's call an hdmi pass through. most receivers don't actually completely power off when you turn them off, they go into standby mode. which is more then enough power to send the signal through the pass through. that being said, if you have 5.1 or higher. why wouldn't you be using it, instead of the built in speakers on tv's, they shound like shit now.
The speakers hook ups on the back of the receiver are red and black which we all knownis positive and negative but the red and black plastic piece that sticks outward just turns and turns and you cant hook anything into it. So how do I hook up the speakers? This is why I watched the video and it told me everything except the reason I watched this video. Can't find anywhere that helps me. Anyone? Please?
You need to use COAX cables. They are copper wires with positive and negative sides. You connect them from your receiver to your speakers. They won't have anything on the end of them, they just look like little wires covered in plastic, you'll have to put them in to the little hole in the twisting plastic bit, and twist them rightwards until the COAX cables are secure.
David Brown I asked a professional that same question not to long ago. Typically optical cables don't work as well for newer generation stuff like on 4k uhd TVs which is why only HDMI is requested for all the new stuff that's out there
Can anyone answer me this question with facts please. I have ps4 . Smart Tv. & kind of an old school stero sound system with good speakers. Mind you, it has an optical input for the speaker system. Any info details as to simple ways I can have these sources work together. Without needing to buy the extra fancy stuff. Thanks much!:)
if your using a smart tv. it should have an optical out port on the back, if your receiver has an optical on the back, it is going to be optical in. so just get an optical cable to go from tv to the receiver.

Nice,.....I love my Klipsch speakers. I only have Klipsch Pro media 2.1 hooked up to my PC. However I am using an Sound Blaster Audigy 2zs with live drive on my PC for audio which supports 7.1. I have toslink cable hooked up from my PC to my old Yamaha 5.1 receiver and cheap Dayton bookshelf speakers as surrounds. Polk audio subwoofer 10, and 2 cheap jensen center channel speakers with dual 8's each ( I hope to upgrade to Klipsch surrounds someday, I need about $1500 ) However my system sounds pretty good for being a cheap setup. A Behringer UCA-202 USB adapter is also a good inexpensive way to connect a PC/laptop to AV receiver for true 7.1 or atmos surround sound. I use an inexpensive Nvidia GT 610 graphics with 2 HDMI connections to my 60"-TV and the other to my PC monitor display which is a 32-inch TV. works Great for 1080p.
If you have a older av receiver, save your money buy a 4k player with dual hdmi out puts and hook one hdmi to tv the other to the receiver. you still will get dolby tue hd.

If your TV does support ARC then you do not need an optical (tosslink/S PDIF) cable.
right~!
That one kinda threw me off thanks for comment! 👍
Exactly right man, if tv support hdmi ARC and amplifier too, no need optical at all, i use it, both is is must support it and yet is must be good hdmi in between, it will works, with bad hdmi may not work
how do you hook up more speakers can i hook up more amps to do it?
if your receiver is a 5.1 receiver, you won't be able to add 2 more to make it a 7.1. tho if you want to jimmy it it's simple. just splice your rear or front cable to another front set, then get another speaker cable, and connect it to the receiver. tho i think when you do that, it eats some of the wattage.
Good thing I got a receiver without thousands of hdmi's . I only need the 5.2 setup for the surround sound and my TV.
Seen other people connecting their xbox, ps 4, blu ray player, cd player and whatnot. Damn they got a lot of things to connect. I keep it simple.
Your missing out. Playing on a PlayStation to certain games will make you jump.
@@briangraham9646 Sorry bro, I'm pc master race :D
I got them hooked up to my PC and only using the receiver when using the TV, otherwise just monitor and headphones.
Why would you use a optical just use a hdmi cable for digital sound
i am going to say it is probably for if you are getting an aerial signal. aerial to the tv, then optical to the receiver, that being said. if you are using an aerial in 2019, you seriously need to question yourself.
Nice video but still looking to find one that includes a cable box and where those connections go.
Where does my cable box sit in this configuration? That's my problem I think.
Plug the HDMI into the SAT/CAT V input or you'll have to use Component & Optical/Phono connections instead.
@@ronsonroll you don't need to put it in the sat/cable port, all hdmi ports on these receivers are neutral. they accept same signal from each. it's just labeled that way so idiots won't forget.
@@demonpride1975 hahahahhaa good shit. I was about to say that, it's just label for that. But they all work the same xD
Why would you need to connect both HDMI and Digital Audio?
the digital audio is if you don't have an arc connection on the back of your TV. like if you were to use the in app smart tv apps. such as youtube or netflix. arc is a two way format, so if you have arc on your tv, and don't use a device. but just watch netflix on your smart TV. you can use either arc which sends sound to your receiver, or an optical digital cable if your tv doesn't have arc.
Why use optical from tv to the receiver when the HDMI arc sends the signal both ways?
optical allows for higher quality of audio to be sent to the receiver, because it doesn't have to convert from digital to analog in the HDMI cables and then back to digital for the speakers
someone gave me a sony surround 2weeks ago.....hopefully this video helps me out.
Trow em all away. Buy a expensive one💃
Soundbar isn't hifi, it's only for those whos not want hifi or are humble
We have the same experience with ours - can barely hear the voices or
Dialogue in movies so you ramp the volume up, but then an explosion or action scene takes place and the volume is deafening.
Where do i put microphone.when input i still the sound from the tv
i am a bit confused, why are you using optical to go back to the receiver, when you are already using the receivers HDMI pass through. the whole point to the pass through, is so the receiver gets the audio from the HDMI, and then you send the tv signal to the TV through the HDMI out port on the back of the receiver, you do not need an optical cable to go back to the receiver.
Haha me too, really strange you only need the HDMI and no optical ;-)
Exactly I just watched it and laughed you see this type of video with wrong information can cost people extra money out of pocket unnecessary. To funny my gold plated 4k Ultra HDMI cable is arriving today from AMAZON YUP ONE CABLE FOR BEST PICTURE AND "SOUND"

The back of mine looks like mission control at NASA. Doesn't look like this one. I just need to know to where the speakers hook up. I hope it's not those that require speaker jacks to plug in. My speakers require spring clips or something like them.
Does the coaxial cable go into the amp, rather than the TV?
Which cable to use for subwoofer connection?
Sorry, I do not speak English, I'm from Brazil.
your receiver should have the rca cable slot labeled at the back.
If i use a HDMI Port why have to use a optical cable (tv yo receiver) for to go back the sound to receiver???????????
If your receiver is much older it may not have hdmi audio return, or if it is newer, you may need to enable it on both the receiver and the tv. Varies by receiver and manufacturer but if the hdmi monitor out has ARC, you don't necessarily have to have the optical. Look up your receiver brand/model/year and see if it supports ARC. Lots of videos on RUclips about ARC.
What kind of cable do I need for the subwoofer? Is it RCA on both ends, or is it y-cable with two RCA in on end with "headphone connector on the other end?
If you have a phono port on your sub and a phono port on your A/V then use a single phono cable to connect up the sub. Hope this helps.

you should just need an rca cable, the receiver should have it labeled on the back.

no the receiver is just that a receiver, hdmi is a neutral signal, the receiver doesn't know if it's just sony, but that it is an hdmi signal. that's why receivers can be bought by themselves. and you can using any speakers, unless of course the speakers that sony has designed come with special features for said receiver.
Can you use instead of PS3 Fat, use PS4?
any hdmi device will work. it's just a neutral port, they are not dedicated ports. that's not how HDMI works.

If you mean AV cables (audio/visual), you can use an AV to HDMI adapter. Enko makes a really good one.
What the name of the wire that's put into the black and red
Speaker wire lol
So the signal path is source (PS3) > amp > television > amp?
Isn't that redundant? Wouldn't source > television > amp make much more sense, and remove an unnecessary HDMI cable?
If you want audio and video from the ps3, you would go from ps3 to receiver to tv. If you want audio to go to speakers plug them into the receiver as well and you would only send the video to the tv.
@@Marko-hx7be How is that not still redundant, as the audio coming from the t.v. is already coming through the amp?
the way you do it is simple.
source, amp then tv. you don't need a return cable. that's the point to the hdmi pass through. i am betting the return optical is for aerial.
What if you don’t have a “game” hdmi port on your control center? Where can I hook my ps4 up to?
how can I connect speakers to tv without amplifier?

if you have say a set of pc speakers that have an optical port on them, that would work. like say the logitech z5500, they have optical in so you could connect them to the speakers.

i just have an optical cable going from my TV to my receiver, why do i need an hdmi going from reciever to TV, doesnt the optical take care of the sound??
However, both the AV receiver HDMI port and the TV must have the additional HDMI ARC.

how would i still get picture and audio when the receiver is turn of
that's why it's call an hdmi pass through. most receivers don't actually completely power off when you turn them off, they go into standby mode. which is more then enough power to send the signal through the pass through. that being said, if you have 5.1 or higher. why wouldn't you be using it, instead of the built in speakers on tv's, they shound like shit now.

I was thinking the same thing haha since hdmi works for both audio and video
Yeah, that really didn't make any sense to me either. Does digital optical out provide better audio?
David Brown I asked a professional that same question not to long ago. Typically optical cables don't work as well for newer generation stuff like on 4k uhd TVs which is why only HDMI is requested for all the new stuff that's out there
the optical cable is for if you want to watch cable/antenna tv through the amp
I have a Pioneer Laserdisc player and use the optical out to the optical in to my receiver. Obv it does not have HDMI. Works like a champ.

Mind you, it has an optical input for the speaker system. Any info details as to simple ways I can have these sources work together. Without needing to buy the extra fancy stuff. Thanks much!:)
The stero system however does not have hdmi receiver though.
if your using a smart tv. it should have an optical out port on the back, if your receiver has an optical on the back, it is going to be optical in. so just get an optical cable to go from tv to the receiver.

What about ARC?
