I’ve done many cross country roads trips in my Mach E. For me what works best is 35 minute charging stops for meals, and 20 minute stops otherwise. When stopping for meals I get to the charger at 10% SOC and leave at 80%. For other stops I arrive at 20% and leave at 70%

I am getting one, I DO wish the charging was a bit faster... like 20 or 25 minutes for the meal stops and 10 to 15 for the other. but that is just my preference.

wait - I am reading online that you need to stop for hours each time and that charging costs more than gasoline. Are they wrong? :)

@@KaiPontecommercial D/C fast chargers charge anywhere from 40 to 60 cents per KWh so it cost me about 20 cents per mile. It costs about half as much when I charge at home.

Do you have the extended range battery? We have the standard battery with AWD and it's 230 miles @100%, of course we don't fast charge to that on the road. But we don't really have the luxury of leaving with 70%, I rarely leave until 80%.

Oh yay! That's with our new 360 camera! We really wanted to be able to fully capture all the awesomeness outside the vehicle so this was our first time getting to test it out. We've used it a TON since then so we can't wait to crank through that footage and see how it all turns out! - Liv

My wife and I are definitely a slow stoppers. We made regular Goodyear, Az to Oceanside trips when we lived in Arizona, and now I make trips to Goodyear from Oceanside to visit my brother. We have a RAV4 that can make the trip on a full tank, but we have never done that trip without stopping at least once, and many times we’ve made more than one stop.
As a result of looking at our *actual* trips, I knew that most EVs would work well for our road trips. I ended up buying a Tesla Plaid to replace my Z06 Corvette and I love my Tesla. Yeah, the acceleration is fun, but what I love about it are all the little things like:
    1) built in route planning
    2) turning on the AC or heat/defrost remotely
    3) entertainment apps when road tripping, or just to kill time if I’m early to an appointment
    4) no routine trips to a gas station
    5) no routine maintenance of oil, oil filter and air filter

That's awesome! EV's make great road trippers! So you're our neighbor in Oceanside! Are you coming to EV Fest in Irvine? mustangmacheclub.org/event/ev-fest-irvine-2024/ - Liv

Hi Liv, yes, we’re neighbors of sorts. We live north of the Oceanside Airport. I’ve seen you and Patrick at Pollo Maria, but I didn’t want to intrude.
Thanks for the link to EVFest, and I might go, depending on my schedule.

I always planned a half hour stop every 3 hours or so on a road trip.
My Rally will have me stopping a bit more often, but that is fine.
That canyon our of Utah is the first place I had a car report over 100 F, and that was well after dark.

8:00 Slow stopper when I'm alone. I take walks at the Rest Stops, stay in hotels, etc. With my husband, he wants to do like 12 hours a day and hardly stops at all except to charge the minimum. The last long trip he let us stop and take a walk at a nice trail at a Chamber of Commerce because he know I was super mad and uncomfortable.

Very true about charging. Gas stops are usually not just for gas, but after snack and bathroom it is 15-20 minutes.
I’m the long stop person. My wife just wants to get there, but still doesn’t mind the charging stops because of autopilot and fun of an EV.

YAY! Callooh, Callay! Great views that I've seen sooo many times on my EV journeys. That was very kind of you to insert me and Moxie into this leg of your trip. ::blush:: It was really great to meet you and I hope we'll do so again before too long. Moxie is always absolutely delighted to make new friends -as you could tell from her effervescent personality. Speaking of Superchargers, I can tell you that I now have an A2Z Typhoon Pro adapter, but… who knows when I'll ever be able to use it, given E'loon's petulant delays? NOT holding my breath. If any of your many EV friends are interested to know about my 13+ years driving on electricity, they could google "casteyanqui." I can tell you that hardly anybody drives the posted speed limit through the Virgin River Gorge -and it's dangerous! That's why I always take Old Highway 91 to reach Littlefield when I drive to Las Vegas. The traffic jam that you saw on the other side of I-15 is always piled up, due to construction in the Gorge. It's horrible! Damn jerks cutting those charging cables! I used to think they were thieves, but the copper is only worth $15. I now suspect that they're pe'trolls, hating on EVs because of all the anti-EV petrolganda that the fossil fools have been spreading lately.

Just so you know, when you enter Nevada, that is the town of Mesquite. There is a Tesla charging station at the Eureka Casino...which is the first exit right after you enter Nevada going south on the 15. There are 8 hookups.

I find that our MME does not learn range from previous driving habits and conditions. It's disappointing to see a given range in the morning, have my wife make here 50 miles commute to work only to find that the total range has dropped 70 miles. Any other EV range indicator, GOM or guesometer I've had would change that estimate in the morning and reflect a 50 mile trip having reduced the range shown by 50 miles. How do you personally work around this? Having watched several of your videos now, it just as though you can only take one charging stop at a time for a couple hours or so and then recalculate? Thanks.
