Could you make cEDH tribal decks? I play Angels and struggle with it.
This list should've been done by someone who actually enjoys playing tribal decks.
Hakbal being in D tier is laughable because it is easily A tier. The synergy of the tribe with the commander is what makes it a really good commander. Plus exploring is such a strong mechanic and the fact it triggers for free without having to do anything is insane and since so many merfolk in Ixalan have explore trigger benefits I'm dumbfounded with it being a D tier. When have you not gone against him and go I need to kill him on sight right now.
I totaly agree! I have a Hakbal Merfolk Tribal deck that I would consider very casual and it is able to amass lethal damage quickly from those Explore triggers. Throw in Hardened Scales, Ozolith or any other counter synergy and Hakbal snowballs quickly 😉
Hakbal casually giving all my creatures +1/+1 counters every combat is obviously D tier, like, what am I even going to do with all that power? Attack my opponents? WHO DOES THAT?
Yeah he’s good, but not kill on sight. I play it and have a friend in my pod that optimized it to higher power. It’s strong don’t get me wrong, but at a table with scarier commanders it is most certainly not KOS.
Still b or a tier imo tho
I highly agree on this, hakbal is simic which is also a good color against all tribal decks.
Not even 3 minutes in…Giada in D tier is CRAZY. She’s cheap, makes mana, buffs your angels, and mono white really isn’t that big of a downside. Especially when you factor in Stax pieces, which white, and angels, have plenty of.
yeah, not to mention silence, mana tithe, a bunch of new ramp cards (arachneomancer's map, etc.)
Agreed. Yes, you’re going to spend some money to make a good deck, but between removal, protection, and clue tokens for draw, mono white is very strong. Draw was definitely a problem in the past. Plenty of options now.
Atraxa is not a tribal commander. She has incidental Phyrexian synergy with infect and oil counters. But plenty of Phyrexians do nothing with her. She's mechanical, not tribal.
I agree. Didn’t understand how you can include it in tribal.
My giada deck took down a pod of five (facing eldrazi, stax deck, slivers, dragons) in about 10 minutes and it wasn’t even close. Not sure how this dude has been able to keep this channel going this long.
who uses Gishath for Dinosaurs nowadays when you can get free spells with Pantlaza and Discover?
Take this man’s MTG license away this list is awful 😂
Exactly what i was thinking...horrible list...
The only thing NOT wrong is putting First Sliver at S tier..... But also Sliver Overlord is a much better commander than First Sliver for tribal
@@silentj0y Depends on how the deck is made. First Sliver is definately more auto-pilot than Overlord.
@@johnpratts2856with all due respect but hard disagree. You cast sliver overlord, use it to tutor sliver hivelord, manaweft, sliver queen, and then sliver legion. You end up with indestructible, self propagating slivers that get exponentially bigger and that are also mana dorks
@@Thatbiddyboi Well, yeah. 😂 We can do lots of Sliver combos! It's the choice of either tutoring everything or just go brrrrrrrrrrr!
Mitch, I have never disagreed with you more. Hakbal should be much higher. You picked the weaker Admiral Brass. Atraxa isn't tribal. Sidar Jabari should be a little higher. You're missing several tribes I think would be fit for this list and have better support than say spirits. Ie squirrels, horrors, rats, and with Assassins creed assassins have some decent options.
Edgar Markov is definitely S tier, I just played my first game with his deck last night and I won without even casting him. Getting a 1/1 Vampire doesn’t seem super OP until you actually play the deck. Not to mention other vampire staples are really good.
I appreciate the epicness of Edgar. But I'm happy he's at A. In comparison to Slivers, (Which I have both decks), Edgar does lack a bit. But the plus side is that you can make Edgar decks in a couple of different ways like aristocrat or beat down. 😊
Ban that dude lol
@@johnpratts2856honestly if you find Edgar lacking it’s because of how you built the deck. If budget isn’t an issue and you fine tune him with all the best cmc creatures and other spells he’s literally a menace and deserves to be at S TIER.
@@Captmorgann Right now, the only budget issues I have for Edgar is getting tutors lol But other than that, we can easily Moxfield Edgar decks and see the ways he can be made. I'm doing a +1/+1 version. Yeah, I can go super cheap Vamps turn sideaways or aristocrats. But even those versions can only do so much when facing off against Dragons or Slivers or higher up decks. I'm not downplaying the KING. I'm just stating facts and experiences. :)
My Edgar deck is nothing but filth 🤣 It used to be my first Stephan Precon when I got into Magic. First match I won against a pod of six. Everyone was surprised 😂. I found out about Edgar this year and bought the judge promo. Of course my friends thought I was nuts. I love the artwork and will probably hold better value then the first printing
Red is definitely the least powerful color now . The only thing red has is treasures . They have the worst card draw, worst removal, worst ramp , worst recursion and only few tutors .
Absolutely
Red by itself yes, not very strong. But red with black, red with white, red with green. All very powerful!
says the man with a mono red card profile pic
NGL I feel like chatterfang shoulda been on this list
Sorry, but strongly disagree with Giada being in D tier. To me, it is the best Angel Commander out there, and being in Mono White favors the gameplan that Angels have, basically having big beaters on the field and deffending them efficiently, while removing enemy flyers.
Also, the 1W mana cost means that you'll be able to play Giada 3-4 times per game without much of a sweat...
I think the point he’s making is that it’s ONLY white. While white cards are great for the game plan, it would be better to have more options
@@bigtexas517mono white is not as bad as he makes it out to be. Giada cost 2 so she comes out early, has flying and vigilance so you can attack next turn and still use it as a mana dork after. Then she aids angels go wide by making them bigger with counter and not just until end of turn. Give her anointed processions and divine visitation and couple of turns later you will have plenty of angels in the outfield.
Giada being the best angel commander is not up for debate, she is not being compared to other angel commanders, she is being compared to other tribal commanders, so being mono color in a less suported tribe hurts her.
If we are talking specifically 'tribal' angel commanders, then Giada is solid. However, I have an angel deck and the commander for it is Jenara, Asura of War. She is an angel and although she doesn't care about other angels, having the green in her casting cost allows me to ramp easily and get big angels out quicker - and of course the blue allows me to do blue things. Obviously, I run Giada in that deck.
Also, Jenara herself is a threat that needs to be dealt with, therefore people will waste their resources on her trying to avoid commander damage, leaving my other angels alone. I don't have a lot of interaction for other people in this deck because I am most of the time the threat. I can focus on protecting my board and continually building while people are neglecting their boards to keep from dying.
I don't play the deck often, cuz people don't like it. 😄
True since angels are extremely high cost.
I don't know why people still think that mono-white is bad... there is so much catch up ramp and card draw support now that I think it's really only second to green for these capabilities. I would say that mono-red is the worst, followed by blue and black.
Myrel in C tier is wild lol I win so many games because no one can interact with me playing a cathars crusade
white is the weakest colour?! excuse me it'2 2024 and there's stuff like trouble in paris and smothering tithe which are arguably one of the best carddraw and ramp spells for commander
also white has a ton of support for angels so the giada take is a big L
imo she's way better than kaalia cause kaalia brings the fear to the table whereas giada is consistent by "just" being a 2 mana manarock that also buffs your team when they enter which also has god tier support via white being the 2nd best colour for blinking
what would you say is the weakest color then?
@@FernandoGonzalez-hu3id red. it relies on impulse card draw and temporary ramp via treasures or rituals and it's terrible at getting stuff back from the geaveyard so often times any boardwipe is a big issue for a mono red player
but the colours are so close in terms of power that this whole idea of one colour being weaker than the other is a relic of the past imo like red is still very scary casue it's fast
so i won't chill on a slicer, purphoros or krenko deck just because they're red
@@cheeso338 the fact that the 2 most popular mono color commander are Krenko (#7) and Giada (#20) seems to back up your hipotesis that the colors are as close to well balanced as they have ever been
@@FernandoGonzalez-hu3iddepends on the power level green is truly the weakest overall but it gets much better the lower the power goes.
@@FernandoGonzalez-hu3id This is not about a handful of commander but the color as a whole, every other color does everything else better except for direct damage it's not even close. Even mono blue can exile and remove creatures now.
My opinion, I find Miirym a better dragon tribal commander than Ur. Much faster and a sick ability copying dragons. And Edgar is def S tier.
Obviously, Morophon is the best tribal commander. He works for every tribe!
Yep. I have one in my Ur-Dragon deck... strong AF.
@rebratfisch I also have morophon in my Ur-Dragon. If it gets on board, the game is nearly over.
Second best Sliver 😆
Morophon + Jodah 4ever. Legendary Humans are best tribe.
You easily made everyone angry, me included😅 Krenko and Lathril are the golden standard of tribal decks, going wide with the two most supported tribes... They even endure tge power creep, in spite of being a few years old, because how great engines they are for their tribes. I would agree with your placements only if considered in a general, non tribal specific, tier list... Otherwise they are the quintessential tribe commanders to me 😌
Yeah, both of those commanders need to be higher based on principle alone. Yeah, Krenko is very limited on what it can do because it's mono colored, but artifacts can still be used in the deck and just having Sting, the Glittering Dagger on Krenko alone makes the deck go crazy as fuck. I've had one game where in just one rotation where I went from having like 12 goblins being made when I tapped Krenko, to 74 goblin tokens just because of Sting. Lathril out of the box with about 4-5 changes can be really strong too. Add in some tutors and seedborn muse and you're good to go.
Seems like you're ranking the tribe not the commander... A 2 drop commander that ramps in any color for any tribe is great let alone in the color that has the hardest time ramping.
I was thinking the same thing after seeing the rankings he had on some of these. Grixis pirates would be great for what the commander does, because there are a few evasive ways to get your pirates through. However, when he starts listing off non-tribal cards to defend power levels (IE: impact tremors for Krenko), is when this list really starts to fall apart.
Good to see you still have no idea what your talking about all these years later.
The fact that you didn’t use Edward Kenway as the pirate commander shocked me
I found it funny he chose Atraxia for a Phyrexian tribal 😅
Why would he use the reskin from a decade old character from a dead game series for the card instead of the one that's already established.
@@Heliyumbecause Edward might be the best pirate based commander we have gotten
As much as I'd hate to defend the guy, but I'm pretty positive this list was made going by the top tribal types and then the most popular commanders for those tribes. Edward Kenway likely isn't as popular as the pirate commander they used.
Kaalia of the Vast is one of the most powerful tribal Commanders.
how is this tier list based. on budget builds. because there is sooo much wrong with this list
This is just........bad. How is edgar not S. What else do you want that card to do? An atraxa isnt tribal, ive never heard of a atraxa tribal deck before? What does hakbal gotta do for merfolk NOT to be on the lower end. Have you even played against any of these decks? Because honestly, it doesnt seem like you have.
Love the channel but I am sorry but what a terrible out of date take on mono white it is easily one of the strongest if built properly. Listen to Demo @edhdeckbuilding talk about it. Definitely a great mono colour
People keep pushing the idea that mono white can't draw or ramp meanwhile it's the best in practically every other mechanic and with how many support cards for those Wizards keep printing it's 3rd best in draw and ramp now.
@Zaelkrie I'd argue that white has the best ramp spell in the game in smothering tithe. Land ramp in white is crazy too, and draw in white, I agree, is really good now.
You don't know Voja as an elf commander. That dog is S tier.
My lukewarm microwaved-an-hour-ago take: Atraxa shouldn't be on this list. It's a stretch to have her just because she can proliferate and is a Phyrexian. By that logic she's an alright angel tribal commander. There's a few angels that give your other creatures ÷1/÷1 counters like Giada and Shalai and that one white angel from the original Innistrad block just to name a couple off the top of my head. We can't just say that generically good commanders are great tribal commanders just bc...
Myrel is better than you think. Reconnaissance allows you to turn sideways and pull out of combat if it would get her killed, or use it as a ghetto form of vigilance. Also any one of three different creatures, or a Horn of Valhalla, so you have a creature whos power is equal to the number of creatures you control, and a Dragon Throne of Tarkir which gifts that power and *trample* to all other creatures will win you games. Also as another wincon for mono white go-wide there is the Halo Fountain. Go into combat with 15 creatures you can turn sideways and pay up WWWWW and you win. Other big removal targets in mono white are the enchantments Cathar's Crusade (I just dropped 6 soldiers on the field and all my creatures get 6 +1/+1 counters on them) and True Convition (my stuff has lifelink and double strike, watch me kill first and gain lots of life). There is a ton of stuff you can add which makes Myrel much better than C tier. I'd put her in A tier as that deck is my most resilient deck, able to build back a big board quickly after a board wipe. Or two, or three.
As a proud owner of a Myrel soldier deck, I can also say that another wincons are Moonshaker Cavalry and Akroma Memorial. When you use either, with the amount of tokens you might have by the time you can cast those, it's an enormous boost that you can kill all 3 opponents with combat damage. I also like to include Eldrazi Monument, since make them all indestructible, and the sacrifice one per turn cost is negligible. Other good mentions are Coat of Arms for bonkers boost, and ESPECIALLY Starlight Spectacular from Unfinity which is super good: Enumerating from zero to the last creature the +x/+x makes it so good (and frankly horrible to keep count of damage each turn).
Serra Redeemer also grants some good power by making all tokens come out as 3/3 (1/1 with 2x +1/+1 counters). There's also quite a lot of Soldier Lords to give +x or keywords or even cost reduction. Myrel also combos very well with Odric, Master Tactician, you'll always have +3 to attack with him and of course you will dictate the blocks, which normally ends up being NO blocks, and you beat someone down without even being able to defend themselves.
Also, the sheer amount of things being blocked by her first ability is SO GOOD. You basically are FREE to do anything in your turn without the worry that anyone will do anything. The bubble of safety to not spend mana only to be countered is magnificent. Out of your turn then is anyone's game, but your turn is sacred. The amount of times someone tried to use an ability or cast something to f me up and I just "NAH UHHH" and points to Myrel is magnificent.
I knew I was in for a wild ride when he instantly put giada in d.
Urtet not being on this list is blasphemy
It's 5 colour too... Urtet can be explosive
Bloomborrow is full with trible commanders. Why are they not on the list?
Hakbal is completely nuts and a kill on site Commander in every game I've played against it, you must be on meth to place it this low.
Mitch is coping big today!
What about Tom Bombadil and the Saga tribal archetype
Not a top 20 creature type🤣
@@bigtexas517 not even a creature type
Hakbal is amazing. Deserves a higher ranking! I can understand the tribe pulls the commander, but it's nasty together.
Another controversial tier list haha
King of the Oathbreakers is a good commander for spirits.
I feel like this tier list is fighting over its identity. Every so often it’s brought up that the Tribal leader is the best for its color/tribe, but then another is brought down for that same reason. I think the best way to do a Tier list of this brand is to remove whatever Tribe they’re working with and replace it with Changeling, that way it’s focusing on the power of the ability and the color pairing.
As a player that has played all this commanders many times, I can say very confident that:
-Krenko, Lathrill should be tier S, krenko being the strongest one in the list, he can easily win turn 3.
-Atraxxa can be tribal, an even so she'll still be an infect deck, so shoould be higher in the list (also acces to 4 colors) Tier A.
-The zombie commander should be at leat A, cause with those colors it can infi-combo as soon as turn 3/4 and win the game.
-That Pirate commander is the weakest one on this list, should be tier D.
-Merfolk commander should be tier A, maybe S, but tier A at minimum. Simic is the best dual color combination and merfolks is one of the best tribe.
-Demon should be tier B, is slow deck but all demons are pretty powerfull
-Spirit one should be C at minimum, if not B. Same with Alela.
-What about Miirym or Tiamat? They are stronger than Ur
-What about other big relevant tribes? Like Humans (Kyler), Ninjas, Shrines, Vehicles?
Also, Mono white is not the weakest mono color anymore, it has a little bit of every other color (except maybe for counter spells). It has proteccion, wraths, removal, card draw, trasure/ramp, tutors, Recursion. So both mono white commanders here should be at least 1 tier higher.
Humans are best tribe irl. Jodah the unifier is a party where all the attendees are swole.
Think you forgott Zinnian, as a Ally Commander, with etb doublers you get so much triggers its crazy
Very surprised by the list.
Merfolks and Angels are strong, and Hakbal and Gisa are making their tribe so good.
Thumbs up if for no other reason then for saying tribal!
GISHATH AT C?!?!?! CCCCCC?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? WHAT A WRONG TAKE!!!!!!
Personally I think pantlaza is a waaaayyy better dino commander, you get so much value
@@kheyonsmith1497wayyyy better, faster and doesn’t need to wait to swing and whiff for only 1 damage and end up with one Dino when you can blink Pants and your board to get more sweet discovery hits
@@dustyluke333 I got a pantlaza trigger into gishath swung at the person with no blockers got revealed into ghalta stampede tyrant the proceeded to dump the other 2 ghaltas in my hand as well as 2 other dinos on the board. I ended up with well over 40 power on the board in one turn.
No one has mentioned Eowyn being placed in B tier. While i do think she should've been placed in A tier, at least she hasn't had it as bad as some others on this list. Honestly, this whole list is a crime lol.
Everyone at my local store is afraid of my Mirri Cats deck. Simple effect but basically telling them they can never stop an army of cats is effective xD
Myrel at C year ? If you build her right , she’s an absolute monster of a card, I’d thought you’d have her on a higher note, I’d say b tier , the fact people have to watch you play your turn ( with small exceptions ) and not interact with your board as you play , causes big problems
I really love her , she’s my main deck and I’ve sinked a lot into that deck , with all the fancy white cards it’s a pure soldier tribal with a couple of none soldiers
Ive won turn 4 gishath. And i definitly play high powered version.
Turn 1 mana crypt and forest for entish restoration
Turn 2 sol ring into arcane signet, into skyshroud claim
Turn 3 gishath
Turn 4 gishath with double strike from legion loyalty on player i hit turn 3, into grim reaper sprint for extra combat, revealed several dinosaurs, other 2 players scooped.
Where would you put a Myr tribal? Urtet being the commander of course 👀
Thank you for not folding to the language police.
I have a Rin and Seri deck that I adore. It's built specifically for casual, and I lean into both aspects. It can get out of control quickly. I'd place it in C tier. It's great fun to play in casual, but it's not super OP. I have an Eowyn deck as well, and I' also firmly place that in B tier. Where's my rats at though? Marrow Gnawer is my commander and I put him at a C or B tier.
I missed najeela that warrior commander
I thought this list for the strongest commanders PER tribe...
Meaning a tierlist for Zombie legends, Elve legends, dragon legends and so on
The spirit deck is nasty is you add all the 1 and 2 mana drop spirts their pretty much mana rocks for playing the commander
Hakbal D tier lol even on a budget list this fish slaps HARD. Giada low tier cuz monow? If we were at 2014 id agree, but nowadays? White got a IMENSE revamp on its cards. Who did that list needs to play more mtg, outside historic brawl I guess lol
I have a Varina and had a Wilhelt, I think Varina is so much better than him. First she transform spells and lands in the graveyard in zombies, she give so much card selection that you always keep the best cards (or put in the graveyard the ones that you need there), help fight because she gains you life back and you only need to be worried about commanders. White give you access to good tokens matters/life gains matters card and and even fix mana with smothering tithe. Plus give you access to Wayward servant and corpse knight that can make the deck explode so much fast even without doing nothing.
I am really on the fence about Gishath at C Tier. Yeah 8 Mana is a lot, but you have green and it has haste, so you have it's value right when you cast it. I personally have it as a big mana stompy deck with a lot of ETB triggers and god that the ETB triggers on Dinosaurs are stupid (See Ghalta Stampede Tyrant, Etali Primal Conqueror, Vaultborn Tyrant. etc) . I would personally rate it at B, but I would also bump up Edgar to S, and Lathrill/Innala/Krenko to A.
You do not understand the power of krenko. There are so many ways to buff up those goblins to absurd amounts. With all the goblin anthems that themselves are creatures you can get all your gobs to easily be 4/4s. And if you combine that with warstorm surge, you can dish out a stupid amount of damage. I have both an ulalek eck and a krenko deck, And I can tell you with 100% certainty that krenko could almost alwyas beat it.
Never cook again brother 😂 I love tribal decks and I can't agree with a lot of these
Bro Inalla being lower than A is kinda wild. Play spell seeker win game.
I Think pantlaza is a stronger dino commander than Gishat, by a lot I'd say, and can easily go to B tier
Wilhelt is the best Zombie commander! Only one that comes close is scarab God so they're both versatile! But just be aware that Wilhelt is easily capable of A tier haha
Mono white is better than mono-red. You have ramp, removal, draw, good creatures while red don't have anything but good creatures and burn.
Red definitely has those things. Desperate ritual, seething song, brightstone ritual, battle hymn are all ramping spells. Red is a bit limited on removal, but there are some red removal spells that I would consider staples if you're running red in your deck, and burning creatures is removing them. Red does have a select number of card draw spells, but typically require you to discard as well. Also, there's something extremely enjoyable about hitting someone in the face with a fuck ton of direct damage, especially in response to someone swinging out to remove you from the game.
Never let bro cook again
No Voja or Scion of the Ur-dragon?
He is only ranking the more popular comander for each tribe, (and only for the top 20 tribes) so Lathril and Ur-Dragon took their places.
I'm pretty sure you have'nt played against Goblins in steroids. Let me put it this way, every turn 3 is a new session.
yeah, that's what I'm saying, he's clearly never played against a good krenko deck
Wait what about the tyranid commander? Even the sub commander that comes with that tribal deck is good I actually use her instead
12:27 I will forever be calling him Krenklin from now on 😂😂
Have to disagree with mono white lacking these days. Second best ramp color behind green and has several very good card draw engines these days
Gotta say, a little disapointed to not see General Tazri in this list.... Allys are way more OP than people gives them credit. I always say, Slivers carry the weight of the sins made by Allys
People hated slivers before allies existed. I know I did.
Pantlaza over Gishath, getting a free spell every turn is better than
Ren and Siri are not bloody D tier! They can pop off really fast and sometimes people don't see it coming l! They're B at the very least!
You should have added sliver overlord to the list 🔥🔥
Edgar markov not being in S teir is criminal
I'm the tribal player on my playgroup so this video was made for me lol
A commander that doesn’t even have to be played that still has a dramatic effect on the field is S tier cuz 🤦🏾♂️
Awe man Mitch… I am so sorry to say it but this was a swing and a miss all around. Hakbal is easily a B tier. Giada is at least a B as well. After you put Krenko in B tier though I stopped paying attention 😅
Avacyn should have been here for board wipe tribal lol
This list is pretty rough but to put dinos and demons in c is rough
Ngl I feel like Miirym the Sentinel Wyrm is a lot stronger as a commander than the Ur Dragon, but maybe that’s me
True, but, apparently, 5 colours dragons seems to be considered better than just 3.
Rin and seri you run changelings so you get both,
I would have never coined Atraxa, Paetor’s Voice as a tribal commander… lol. Why lot have the 7 mana value Atraxa in the list too 7:58
If someone says they have a phyrexian tribal deck with Atraxa I call bs. We all know you are playing infect. You are just trying to cover it up
I agree with it.
What about Ezio assassin's tribal?
Alela might be helpful in a crime and outlaw deck
Rin and Seri doesn’t deserve D Tier…. C-B maybe. Have you seen Jetmir? Also the support for cats/dogs has improved a lot these past few sets. It really works well if you play both cats and dogs with a balanced mix.
Jetmir isn't inherently tribal though.
Putting Hakbal in C tier is disrespectful
Both of my game ending dragons are 5 mana cost…
Personally, I'd argue that Huatli, Poet of Unity is a better Commander for Tribal Dinosaurs.
Pantlaza is way better for dinos
Didn't see Umbris or captain Nathrod for Horror/ nightmares either
Lathril is an easy A tier
I feel most commentors do not understand the list, its not about the cards power nor the decks power, but how well does THE COMMANDER benefit the tribe, not the tribe benefitting the commander. Thats why something like TFS and Urdragon are so high. Where Rin and Seri and hakbal are so low. Then they are compared to one another, not to other commanders of the same tribal. Thats why color also matters for the commanders.
If that were the case then why on earth is Giada at the bottom? A discount/dork on a perpetually increasing anthem with vigilance so you never miss an opportunity to use the discount is so incredibly synergistic.
What is this list😐Willhelt, B’elakor, Krenko not in S tier? They’re the best commanders for their tribes
White is like top 2 colors
Damn, no love for Sethron and Minotaurs
Krenko is S , markov is B
Why isn't pantlaza there tho
Miirym S-tier
I was looking for miirym too!
Unpopular opinion: Lathril is not a strong Commander and only played because its basically the only viable Golgari Elves Commander and WIlhelt is a shity card and not even the best Dimir Zombie Commander (its Scarab God), and he is just popular, because he is the only passable Zombie Commander in these colors with the matching type. Decade is the biggest pile of trash
