This game was so good back in the day. I got my dad hooked on it and we ended up buying it from the Rental place. This will always be one of my FAVORITE SNES games of all time. (Pro Tip: Make like 3 rows of upgraded AA across the front of the base and nothing will get by)
I still get anxiety to this day when I hear that incoming attack alarm. I wasted days on this game as a kid. I love it, flaws and all its a great game.
I remember this game because it was one of the games in an SNES emulator CD, that I had at the time. This game is known in Japan as Militia, and the PC version was published by Mindscape (which also published the European SNES version).
considering the system and era..looks pretty damm impressive for a console game. Usually, these rts-styled games never worked that well outside of the pc. i might have to track this one down.
It REALLY was! It was multiplayer as well. I've never played the SNES version but I'm willing to bet the Windows 3.1 version was probably a bit better.
Likewise, thats the version I have. I actually picked it up way back when and thought it was a PC version of Metal WARRIORS and was rather disappoint when I actually installed and started playing it, but it grew on me none the less.
I haven't played it in years, but I remember having a ton of fun with it over modem with my brother. It was a blast to literally blast each other. I think it was a little janky, but fun none the less.
Maybe do a top 10 "wth do I do in this game" list :-D Looks like a fun game when you know how to play :-D thanks for featuring this one it'll go on the wanted list!
These reviews are the adult equivalent of flipping through the books (Instuction manuals) on days I'd just hang out in my room as a kid. I'd nominate you to narrate game explanations on the rumoured, classic Nintendo streaming servive, or whatever. You deserve a lot more subscribers. Top notch channel!
I couldnt remember what the name of this game was for so long. I rented it back in the day and really liked it. Its definitely something different. Great video as always. Also my middle/high school called in school suspension ICBM (In-Class Behavior Modification)
lol i learned what icbm stood for because my mum used to play tom lehrer concert records when i was a kid. from "we will all go together when we go": _Oh we will all char together when we char_ _And let there be no moaning of the bar_ _Just sing out a Te Deum_ _When you see that ICBM_ _And the party will be come-as-you-are_
The PC version of this was one of my favourite games. In Windows 3.1 and probably earlier versions, it opened multiple windows, and you had to use multiple windows to make everything work. It was really cool for a kid.
The Windows 3.1 version of this game is awesome!! The whole thing is played in different game windows and when someone launches a missile, it flies from one window to the other. Due to mouse control, naturally, it's a lot more intuitive, too!
YES Metal Marines. The game that my uncle used to play and where I've always been wondering what the name of that game was. Found it out a couple of months ago but thanks for the review.
Once you learn the internal strategy battle system of the game, this game was phenomenal back in the day. Very difficult too. Frantically placing structures and preparing and then you hear that siren WEEEEOOOO of impending missile attack. So thrilling! It really makes sense that since most of the continental land-mass is obliterated from anti-matter weapons, warfare is now conducted island vs island launching missiles and flying over giant mechs as an amphibious assault.
I had a game called "Utopia: Creation of a Nation" which was pretty similar- you had less control with the attack, but the city building meets attacking a distant (fixed) enemy RTS is there.
Good observation. I find this pre-Dune-2 era of RTS fascinating. The games weren't all the same like WarCraft, C&C, StarCraft, Z, Red Alert, etc. Sure games like Metal Marines and Herzog weren't the easiest to play but they're an amazing look into what game designers were exploring at the time.
Played this a ton in my early teens when it came out. Still have the cart. It's like Populous meets Starcraft. With a bit of a Cybernator/Phalanx vibe... or Syndicate.... anyway... Always thought it would be cool 2 player.
I love this game. Even did when I was young but back then I did not make it really far. It lands in the console from time to time but unfortunately, I can not get over the second snow level but it is nice to see this game actually got some love!
Thanks for the shout out. After all i suggested the game. Also you should have mentioned the enemy communications. Annoying but with some sweet anime like visuals.
One of my top 10 games. If/when I decide to jailbreak my SNES Classic, I'll definitely have this one added. Excellent challenge, strategy and the pacing is alright too.
Indeed, it’s on the Namco Museum Collection 1 cart. I was very happy to find it there because the SNES version goes for $100+ these days. One day i will own an original cart but the Evercade version definitely eases the pain.
I have this game on PC. Its plays a bit differently with multiple windows being open for both your base and the enemy base. There is also a game on steam called Mech Marines that looks to be a spiritual successor to this. Its still in early access tho and looks to have been abandoned. The ICBM is kinda lame. Wherever you launch it, it just blows up every square on the area you launched it upon, but if I remember it wasn't as powerful as you would expect it to be
The main problem with ICBM was how much energy you need for 1 launch (255 I think?). Regular missiles are 8 energy, so you can launch like 30 missiles for the cost of 1 ICBM
I played this game based on the title and got hooked. I never looked at an "instruction manual" and still figured out what to do in this game. I think it took me a while because I remember telling my brother, "I think I figured out this game, I just don't know what this is for" and it was the main base. But once I figured that out, the game was a lot of fun. I believe there were no gamefaqs when I was in highschool.
I rented this game about 3 times back then (around maybe 1994 or so). I absolutely loved it, it was addicting. Heck, at the time I didn't even know I was actually playing my first ever "RTS" game, a term in my vocabulary that I only used and understood around 1996 or '97 when I first started to read articles in magazines about that little game called Command & Conquer. But essentially, Metal Marines was - for all intents and purposes - a real-time strategy game on the Super Nintendo (and I didn't know at all, and I loved it; no wonder why I got into the Command & Conquer series so much in the years that would follow). My only regret is that one day I did actually buy it (it was second-hand though, but in pretty good condition with the box and manual too); only to then sell it a few years later. Oh my innocent younger self... how I would slap myself in the face for doing that if I could. It's nearly impossible to find this game brand new today (and if you do, be prepared to get rid of a lot of your money); even finding one in good "complete in box" condition is a headache, and most of the ones I see from time to time is the European, Super Famicom version instead. * Smacks forehead * Oh well. Great memories of this game nonetheless, loved it.
Loved this game back in my SNES days ! Played the *** out of it. The anime cutscenes went well with the whole mech aesthetic. Finished it a few times. Hell now i wanna replay it. I agree the snes mouse would've been great for it but ah back in the day you just learned to deal with stuff.
Hey drunk was waiting for you too do this sens your post on Twitter. Well done video. Iv been on a non repro kick lately and when you said you were reviewing this gem it made me really want a hard copy and not a Rom. So three days later I found it in a game shop was surprised at the 80.00 price tag but checked it out and it was a non repro. I bought it have been playing it for the past week. Still love it any ways great review. May I suggest the wing commander series next.
I never owned this game but I remember the local video rental had it and I rented it regularly. For some reason it was very addictive and was one of my first (if not the first) entries into the kind of RTS games I would later love on the PC (Command & Conquer!) though of course this is not an RTS.
I played this game both on SNES and PC, and the opening story is slightly different for each. Not enough to be of great significance overall, but each is interesting in their own right. Ultimately, the conflict is between the remnants of human nations on Earth and the orbital colonies, and who the player controls and who the bad guys are is where the difference is. In the SNES version, when anti-matter weapons are first used it starts off a chain reaction that detonates all stockpiles of anti-matter weapons, making this more of a massive manmade disaster than anything else. A military dictator takes control of all of the remnants of humanity on Earth and then sets his sights on conquering the orbital colonies. The colonies, not wanting to be attacked, launches a pre-emptive invasion of Earth to take the fight to the bad guys with the player in command of the colonial forces. In the PC version, the good guys and bad guys are flipped. It's been a while since I played the PC version, but as best as I can remember the Earth is shattered not by a massive disaster involving anti-matter weapons, but an outright anti-matter war that started when terrorists destroyed San Francisco with an anti-matter bomb. After the dust settled, the shattered nations of Earth pulled together into a coalition government to rebuild. Meanwhile, a military dictator takes control of humanity's orbital and lunar colonies and launches a campaign of conquest, conquering nearly all of the remaining landmasses on Earth. The player commands the final bastion of resistance to take the fight to the enemy and push the colonials off the planet. At the end of the day, the story doesn't have a huge impact on the gameplay, but it's interesting to see how the story deviated between the two versions of the game, and both work for helping carry the game's narrative forward.
A few tips; if you want to build the ICBM, the first level is actually a good spot to do it. Also, the dummy unit and dummy base are kind of a waste. They don't fool the computer, though they may slow their metal marines a bit. Money is better spent on more defenses or upgrades.
There's also a mech based RTS on GBA called Mech Platoon. I don't know much about it since I never played it myself, I've only seen it promoted in some game mags, mostly Nintendo Power Advance. Would be nice to see a review on that game since there doesn't seem to be much coverage on it, at least not on YT at the moment (trust me, I searched for a video review and came up empty handed). Actually, when I first saw the title of this video, I thought this was that game and it that it got a GBA port, but clearly I was wrong (not the first or last time for that).
To be completely honest, the best way to play this game is to get windows 3.1 installed within dosbox-staging and play the windows 3.1 version. particularly the master edition if you can get it. It is simply more fast paced, the effects of missiles flying from window to window is a thing of beauty and the internal documentation is actually well done. You do not have that problem with figuring out what does what. It's simply the better version.
My man, you're page is badass. So much fun. And you're in Minnesota! Me too! Could you make a few videos of cheats or special moves in some snes games that we might not know about? Great videos dude
I play this on an SNES emulator. Its kind of unforgiving but once you get the hang of it you figure stuff out pretty quickly. I wish there was a modern version of it.
The game is a fun idea, but I think it's unplayable today unless it's on an emulator you can speed it up in skip mode during all the attack animations. Plus the campaign eventually gets to the point where it's dumb luck whether you win or not. The AI starts out so far ahead of you that a single good strike will finish you. The whole thing boils down to resetting until you get a game where the AI's first couple of strikes miss your vital buildings.
I played it a lot and my most common strategy is to build a maximum of missile launcher and Metal Marines. Send 1 or 2 missile at the time to "scout" the enemy, destroy his missile launchers first. This requires prior knowledge of the enemy base, which you get by replaying.
@@Guiboard You had to have the layout of every level memorized ahead of time to stand a chance. Launch your marines at the exact right spot to do damage without getting wiped out by defenses. At a certain point in the game, your missiles had no chance of getting through without double launchers.
POOKISTAN just bought a hard non repro copy of this for 80$$ such a goid game. But i used to rent it a lot with the instructions. Such a great snes hidden gem.
ICBM = Inter Continental Ballistic Missile. Basically the rockets that carry 15MT Nuclear Warheads (If we are talking the maximum yeild known in the US arsenal)
Snes mouse really didn't have very much support, did it? I have to wonder if there's any value in making patches for mouse support for all these old snes strategy games? I would have no idea where to begin there, but surely someone must have thought about it.
This is a game I wish I knew about when I was younger. Instead, I learned about it through a Warcraft 3 custom game and then I saw the name on a SNES emulator and was like "Huh I wonder if that game was based off of this." Yes, yes it was.
Man, I used to play the absolute crap out of this game as a kid. I'd rent it over and over until my mom found a copy for me to buy. I still remember hunkering down on that first mission, deploying like 30 double AA launchers w/ 5 radar so I couldn't be touched. Then I built 4 ICBMs and 3 upgraded Marines so I could launch the ultimate attack. When you fired ICBMs, they were treated as missile slots, so you could launch four at once. Theoretically the ICBMs were equipped with Anti-Matter warheads. Which is impressive when you considered that a health HQ can tank 2 ICBM shots before dying to the third.
Also one of the HARDEST games I have ever played. Its difficult to get your base set up before you get attacked multiple times. Still, if you can get the hang of it, its a fun game.
This game was so good back in the day. I got my dad hooked on it and we ended up buying it from the Rental place. This will always be one of my FAVORITE SNES games of all time. (Pro Tip: Make like 3 rows of upgraded AA across the front of the base and nothing will get by)
This is my number one hidden gem on the SNES. BUY THIS GAME!
I second that. So many hours of fun as a result of this game!
I still get anxiety to this day when I hear that incoming attack alarm. I wasted days on this game as a kid. I love it, flaws and all its a great game.
Yeah it’s very unique. No other game like it.
Picked this up this weekend, quickly becoming one of my favorite SNES games!
Love this game! Never played the SNES version though. I had the Windows 3.1 version 😁
Me too! Shooting missiles from one window to another was a blast :)
I'm willing to bet your right. mouse support alone would be a big bonus
I haven't played it in years, but I remember having a ton of fun with it over modem with my brother. It was a blast to literally blast each other. I think it was a little janky, but fun none the less.
Maybe do a top 10 "wth do I do in this game" list :-D
Looks like a fun game when you know how to play :-D thanks for featuring this one it'll go on the wanted list!
Ed's Retro Geek Out I second this idea.
I kinda already did that though, with the "Games that deserve a second chance" videos...?
SNES drunk gonna go re-watch that video now but you’re probably right. What I remember about it would probably be very similar to that concept.
These reviews are the adult equivalent of flipping through the books (Instuction manuals) on days I'd just hang out in my room as a kid. Yikes. Only in the 90s could anyone have thought that was actually euphemistic and not terrifyingly authoritarian.
ICBM - InterContinental Ballistic Missile
Yeah, thats the nuke
I was about to type this. I’m an ex-Air Force flyer.
Jeremy Seal Thank you for your service
I'm honestly amazed he didn't know what it was...considering how much they are brought up in anything with military, space, air, movies, tv shows...
lol i learned what icbm stood for because my mum used to play tom lehrer concert records when i was a kid. from "we will all go together when we go":
_Oh we will all char together when we char_
_And let there be no moaning of the bar_
_Just sing out a Te Deum_
_When you see that ICBM_
_And the party will be come-as-you-are_
I remember spending hours on this game on my Windows 95 machine. Loved it as a kid. Haven't played it in almost 20 years probably.
The PC version of this was one of my favourite games. In Windows 3.1 and probably earlier versions, it opened multiple windows, and you had to use multiple windows to make everything work. It was really cool for a kid.
Love the channel spotlighting obscure titles
It's funny how every "Sim-type" mobile game is like a crappy version of this game...
I remember playing this as part of a Demo disc for pc. Decades later I finally know the name of the game. Thanks!
The Windows 3.1 version of this game is awesome!! The whole thing is played in different game windows and when someone launches a missile, it flies from one window to the other. Due to mouse control, naturally, it's a lot more intuitive, too!

Sounds like a more user-friendly Herzog Zwei.

Thanks for the shout out. After all i suggested the game. Also you should have mentioned the enemy communications. Annoying but with some sweet anime like visuals.
Didn't even know this existed. Very cool. Thanks for the video!
Looks like a wartime SimCity; I’ll have to buy Metal Marines if I see it for cheap.
That's a pretty good way to put it. Micromanaging locations is key.
The cover kind of looks like Trevor Goodchild from the Aeon Flux series. Interestingly, Malcolm McDowel played Trevor Goodchild in a Pepsi commercial!
One of my top 10 games. If/when I decide to jailbreak my SNES Classic, I'll definitely have this one added.
Excellent challenge, strategy and the pacing is alright too.
This is also on one of the Evercade Namco cartridges.
Indeed, it’s on the Namco Museum Collection 1 cart. I was very happy to find it there because the SNES version goes for $100+ these days. One day i will own an original cart but the Evercade version definitely eases the pain.
I used to play the crap out of this when I was a kid, though I never managed to beat it until I played it with save states
One of my favorite games as a kid!
Would be SO rad if someone made a rom hack enabling mouse support!
Hated this game
My Fav SNES Game! Absolutely loved this game. Thanks for the vid
Definitely was one of my top 10 SNES back in the day!
not enough mech games in this generation
Watch stuff go BOOM!
Never heard of this one, looks pretty good! Thanks for the vid!
I have this game on PC. Its plays a bit differently with multiple windows being open for both your base and the enemy base. There is also a game on steam called Mech Marines that looks to be a spiritual successor to this. Its still in early access tho and looks to have been abandoned.

I heard that when SNESdrunk hit 250k subscribers, RUclips sent him a gold-plated copy of Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball.
I played this game based on the title and got hooked. I never looked at an "instruction manual" and still figured out what to do in this game. I think it took me a while because I remember telling my brother, "I think I figured out this game, I just don't know what this is for" and it was the main base. Sweet vid... surprised i missed this one while leveling up in life..
I recommend Super Conflict for a fine military strategy game on the SNES similiar to the PC Panzer General games! Great music, and quite a challenge.
I rented this game about 3 times back then (around maybe 1994 or so). I absolutely loved it, it was addicting. * Smacks forehead *
Oh well. Great memories of this game nonetheless, loved it.
Nice, i probably would have ignored this one based on the cover but it looks good. Thanks for another great video!
I remember renting this and I liked it so much I kept it for almost a month. Thanks blockbuster!
This game was Warcraft before Warcraft was Warcraft.
SNESdrunk you’re the champion in the 16 bit! Love your videos ❤️🎮
Man, i really loved this game. It was just so cool

This game gets tough. Really high strategy not that long into the game. Rewarding enough when you do figure it out.
A few tips; if you want to build the ICBM, the first level is actually a good spot to do it. Also, the dummy unit and dummy base are kind of a waste. They don't fool the computer, though they may slow their metal marines a bit. Money is better spent on more defenses or upgrades.
played both windows 3.1 and SNES versions. really great. never completed it though.
It's in the top 10 of the best SNES games is my opinion
I hope they make a PS4 version of this
There's also a mech based RTS on GBA called Mech Platoon. I don't know much about it since I never played it myself, I've only seen it promoted in some game mags, mostly Nintendo Power Advance. It's not Malcolm McDowell on the front cover, it's the late Frank Sinatra!!!
The summer wind, came blowin' in, from across the battlefield...
This game is a guilty pleasure of mine. I honestly love it. Can’t watch video yet since I’m at work.
Wow, just discovered this channel, I'm addicted.
You should make a review on "Time Slip" ( A super Cheap Contra clone)
coolgreek79 thanks for that. Never heard of it. Doesn't look bad at all.
You kill an enemy, two steps back, the enemy is back
Finished it at last day of winter holidays 1993. played that night till 4 am so first day as shool was furked up.
This game is SO much fun! i spent a couple weeks during an awesome summer playing this :D
My man, you're page is badass. So much fun. And you're in Minnesota! Me too! Could you make a few videos of cheats or special moves in some snes games that we might not know about? Great videos dude
Thanks, I was in MN for 32 years, now live in NM
SNES drunk ooooh right on man. It's a tad cold up here so I'm envious.
Yes it could more enjoyable if use snes mouse. With snes controller, it will be thumb exercises :D
I play the intro to every video multiple times. So funny!
Love this game. Wish it had an editor
This game seems really cool! Wish I had known about it back then! I would have loved it!
I play this on an SNES emulator. Its kind of unforgiving but once you get the hang of it you figure stuff out pretty quickly. I wish there was a modern version of it.
I still play this regularly. Found a physical copy for my Snes 10 years after Snes was replaced for $15.
fun game. I liked the nuke option.
The game is a fun idea, but I think it's unplayable today unless it's on an emulator you can speed it up in skip mode during all the attack animations.

Awesome video! Need to get this game now!
Loved this game, was always sad they didn't do anything more with it.
I recently found this one on my everdrive. I liked it...for what it was. It wasn't hard to beat the AI.
Thx for covering this great game, try Rampart
I think I might get this...
POOKISTAN just bought a hard non repro copy of this for 80$$ such a goid game. But i used to rent it a lot with the instructions. Such a great snes hidden gem.
I'll go the virtual console route if I do. Looks cool doe...
Willey singleton 80 bloody dollars?!
Willey singleton well worth it
I saw this game today in a second hand store for 45 bucks not sure if I should get it but it's going for over 75 easy on ebay right now
I’m sure it’s been said but icbm is intercontinental ballistic missle
Game was way ahead of its time I rented the crap out of this when I was a kid.
This game looks so cool. I never played this title.
ICBM = Inter Continental Ballistic Missile. Basically the rockets that carry 15MT Nuclear Warheads (If we are talking the maximum yeild known in the US arsenal)
ICBM is a intercontinental missle, so basicly a nuclear strike which can not be interupted by enemys rockets... it is AWESOME!
God, how I loved this game! ❤️
Seeing this makes me wonder if you ever played any of the Super Robot Wars?
Snes mouse really didn't have very much support, did it?
I have to wonder if there's any value in making patches for mouse support for all these old snes strategy games?
I would have no idea where to begin there, but surely someone must have thought about it.
This is a game I wish I knew about when I was younger. Instead, I learned about it through a Warcraft 3 custom game and then I saw the name on a SNES emulator and was like "Huh I wonder if that game was based off of this." Yes, yes it was.
I just found this game last week and have been playing the shit out of it.
Loved that one.was the only one Who ever finished it withhin my friends
Also one of the HARDEST games I have ever played. Its difficult to get your base set up before you get attacked multiple times. Still, if you can get the hang of it, its a fun game.
Jeez I totally forgot this awesome Game 😳
I wish the algorithm had recommended this to me 2 months ago when I could still buy it on Wii U.
You should check out "Godzilla: Monster of Monsters"
Keep up the great work!
Yes.
Would like to see you do a video about Utopia. Also Obitus as another "wtf even is this" type game.
This game is really great
One of the best game ever on Snes
