Revisiting Metal Warriors - SNESdrunk

- I didn't want Metal Jesus' team of powerful high-priced lawyers after me so I'll have to use the word "hidden gem" in the description instead of the script. If any game fits the description of hidden gem, it's Metal Warriors.

This was one of our favorite rentals from our local Blockbuster. Back when my dad passed a decade ago I bit the bullet and purchased a copy for myself since going to the video store with him is a core memory for me.
good son
Mom and I played B.O.B and Jurassic Park the most. 😊
It is crazy how expensive this cart is
I used to rent it from Blockbuster too. I had read about it in a Nintendo Power issue, and luckily they had it for rental and got it a number of times. Paid a good amount for my own copy years later as well, but it's a favorite.
Yup, rented this every chance I could!
One of my favorite childhood games.
Incredible game. Legit one of my favorite snes games
I fucking love this game! I asked for this game for my birthday and was so happy to get it!
How did this game not get more attention? Seriously, how awesome is this?
Late release
@@11AleZZ yes. The end of an era
Low production
This game is sometimes referred to as Assault Suits Gideon (due to it's similarities to Cybernator), and this was released before Front Mission Series Gun Hazard, since the pilot jack out mechanic from this game was later implemented there.
That's kind of a false rumor.
I love the soundtrack. Usually I listen to it during work. It fits almost perfectly.
Metal Warriors is a great game, I played it a lot growing up. One thing though you forgot mention is how it is a pretty tough game diffculty wise. Metal Warriors definitely is what people would call a hidden gem these days since a lot people don't know about it and it has never been released on any newer platforms.
Agree, it is a hidden gem of the SNES era.
I spent a few hundred hrs with my friends playing this back in the day; i remember that during the summer when we got this game and were playing it in versus non-stop? That we literally had to cool the SNES down in the freezer for 15 minutes cause it'd lock-up completely by overheating after a few hours. Ah the memories. The strategies you could employ in versus mode could get quite deep once you got to grips with every mech's ups & downs and the versus map layouts.
Loved how you could test play each mech in the options, very cool stuff.
I remembered renting it at a video show. I never saw it for sell anywhere. But it blown my mind. That was the start time I saw cut scenes like that on the SNES. I thought only Sega Saturn, PlayStation, arcade, or PC was able to have something of that quality. I had to make sure a wire wasn't unplug. At first I thought it was a movie on the sci-fi channel anime block (Saturday mornings).
What a classic. I am from Peru (S. America), my older cousin have me the game in 1999 and wish I still had the cartridge.
Seeing that magazine ad and the Cybernator game cover art next to each other would most definitely NOT help with the confusion about it being a sequel...
That being said, I freaking love this game. The head to head mode was amazing, and I didn´t even know about the basketball mode until your videos. Cheers!
I love this game! The final boss killed me after ejecting from his mech. It was shocking but so much fun! I beat one boss by just going around it.
I was really looking forward to this revisited review, Metal Warriors was one of the first game I played where the story unfolds in Chile. Such fun memories, thanks SDrunk 👍🏼
I got a copy of this in 96 from Funcoland. Still have it til this day. EXCELLENT Game and getting rarer and rarer to get.
I remember this game quite vividly when I was a kid. I absolutely loved it and I remember that the Spider-mech could turn invisible which sounds cool but since the player could see your screen on the other end it didn't work good but my dad let me think I won
My friend and I used to use a card table pushed up against his TV right at the split point in vs mode. One of use would sit under the table seeing only the bottom screen and the other would sit to the side and only see the tip screen. It was the only way to really use the strengths of each mech. Like...for instance the spider can turn invisible...but if you can see both screens it's a very useless ability. Also using the rolling attack of the roving turret robot was a lot of fun to surprise someone with from the top of an elevator shaft.
This looks like an amazing game. Shame it hasn't been released anywhere else.
Me and My older brother used to play this on an old 2p arcade machine with other nintendo games and it was such a good game
Loved the Arrested Development reference.
Some of my best snes memories are with this game. No one else ever seems to know about it
God those animations were so smoooth. Been tryin to play n finish NES titles like Metal Storm first, and other early mecha stuff, but it just looks too good to wait. Bein able to hop out your mech like in Metal Mech and Blaster Master is just top tier.
Let me tell you something about acting. I was doing a showtime movie, Hot Ice with Anne Archer. Never once touched my per diem. Went down to Craft Service, got some raw veggies, bacon, Cup-A-Soup, baby, I had a stew goin'!
I loved this game. for a full year me and 5 Friends played the Vs mode. it was crazy good. wish I recorded how good the Vs mode was
Me and my buddies used to play the death match nonstop. The screen cheating was rampant. Thanks for covering this.
The Basketball Mode reminds me a lot of Zombies Ate My Neighbors, another LucasArts game, it featured similar graphics on the Dr Tongue Boss and in the Credit Level.
I completely loved this damn game. Played it back in the early 90s, and could never talk to anybody about it, they always thaugt i was talking about Cybernator, and said i was wrong about the tiny pilot comming out!! XD
SPACE WEED at the beginning!
*reference time*
This game's cinematics almost rivals the Mega-CD's version of Sol-Feace
This is a game you think can only happen in your imagination. An anime inspired, mech suit controlling, run, and gunning explosion fest. On Super Nintendo, published by Koonami, and developed by LucasArts. Two legends unexpectedly come together in an amazing way.
I rented this once in high school and had a lot of fun with it.
Unsure why but our little movie store in our podunk town had this and I loved it despite being way too hard for me as a kid lol.
as always mate, thank you so much for these reviews its helps me so much with what's worth getting for the collection, and always learning something new. Keep up the good work!
i love running around as a human in this & Front Mission 3. would love to do that in Armored Core 6! (V kinda had it in multiplayer...)
I love how this actually NOT being a Japanese developed game they still managed some level of 70's-80's era mech anime in the aesthetic. The cutscene with the closeup of the pilot in his helmet gives me Robotech/Macross vibes. The music also seems to have a striking similarity to the other Lucasfilm developed Konami published game, Zombies Ate my Neighbors. I don't know if it's either the composer being the same person or their distinct soundfont.
Some folks on the team grew up with those old localized & syndicated mecha anime! And of course, Cybernator was a major influence lol
@@kwizzeh You can really tell those were the type to program such a game. Back when that sort of thing was incredibly niche and only college clubs that had access to Japanese import stores' video sections watching them raw.
Dude. I love this game. I actually used to rent it all the time. I seriously should’ve just bought it. Oh the regret… This game is such a fun great time. The soundtrack is so great.
Great game, I'm surprised it wasn't more well known than it was. I rented it many times and played with friends & cousins till we played it to death.
Prometheus was my fav when I was young but over time I became way more fond of Spider for the memez & trolling potential.
One of my favs that I found purely through it's awesome soundtrack during lockdown. Solid gameplay, awesome spritework, music and just an overall fun and fulfilling experience. I read an interview with someone from LucasArts that worked on the game said they wanted to make their own after playing Cybernator combined with the love of classic mecha anime.
Never seen this game ever either when I was a kid. What a wild ride. Gonna have to look on the market and I'm sure it won't be cheap.
Dude you’re awesome! I have all these games on my snes mini but I’m so intimidated to play them because I know they’re going to be hard lol
Do Front Mission: Gun Hazard next!
I rented the crap out of this game and eventually bought it. Loved this one so much.
Oh man I used to play this a lot back in the day
Now you need to make video about Front mission gun hazard - another great mecha side scroller
I rented this at blockbuster when I was a kid
I am an indie developer who has an idea for a sort of homage to this game. I loved it as a kid and it was so cool to me as a kid and even now I feel like a reboot would be appreciated. Think armored core meets blaster master meets final fantasy and front mission 😳 want to know more or even help me bring this retro vision to life?!?
I’m definitely going to play this anyway I can.
Huge ass bazooka, legend of tubgirl lives on.
Actually was able to rent this one at a blockbuster back when it came out ... I enjoyed it as I was getting into battletech and anime at that time as well... Probably have this game to blame for the amount of gunpla I bought over the years lol.
Hi SNES Drunk, a video topic suggestion: "Top 11 SNES games with the best pixel art"
1000 videos, yahooie!
seems to be what you would call.... wait, what is it you youngsters like to say.... a clandestine jewel.
I think the missile number shows up on the missile pack on your back
Why have i never heard of this game? I don't ever recall seeing it at the store. I'm going to have to play this "any way i can"
Wow this game looks incredible
I always thought this game was related to Cybernator when I was a kid too haha. Im sure someone clearly took inspiration from the other, which is fine.
So... the next logical game to do a video on would be Front Mission Gun Hazard, right? Since it's also very similar to these two other games visually and in control style.
I think there’s a remake or a re release of this game for modern consoles in the works
Gun Hazard must be next
Holy cow this game looks amazing.
I guess the lack of awareness back in the day explains the rather high asking price for a CIB copy today.
Guys, just make sure to turn the volume down when you load up this game. the intro is LOUD
Havoc suit the goat
I had no idea that LucasArts made this.
Just discovered this oneast year
Why am i only now learning about this game?
We used to rent this one! Wish we had purchased it instead haha
I wish there was q sequel
only ever saw the cover...with rise of the robots PTSD I never even rented it
Now that's rather funny, although it does make perfect sense in retrospect
But this game was really common here in Brazil, I remember at least two of my friends owning it as well as it being common to see in game shops and game rentals, I distinctively remember playing it myself fairly often despite not owning it
But, here's the part that makes sense in retrospect, I'm Brazilian and the 16-bit generation lasted remarkably longer here due to the country's economical issues, so it makes sense that late 16-bit games would end up having a longer lifespan down here as opposed to the USA where everyone switched to the PS1 already
Those pixel-art cutscenes were just pure LucasArts. I remember renting this as a kid and being blown away by the opening, with the cockpit startup sequence.
RIP ❤
Aye. I get real Full Throttle vibes from some of the aesthetics.
But if you check, they're a copy of Gundam 0083 scenes.
You know SNESdrunk loves a game when the biggest complaint he has is over the sound your main weapon makes LOL!
You were so drunk about it
Metal Warriors is probably my fav action platformer
Pew pew! PEW PEW!!
I'd have to agree as well. I too prefer Metal Warriors, but Cybernator had the punchier sounds.
Metal warriors was one of my favorite games as a child. I played VS mode with my cousins so much.
I didn't even hear of this game until I started playing SNES games "any way you can" but it definitely felt like some hidden gem.
Total length of video: 390 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 2 secs.
.51% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".
This game is a Masterpiece.
I love watching this… it feels so nostalgic! My mother used to play this with me to stop me from eavesdropping on my neighbor screaming in agony when he would have diarrhea attacks.. my heart goes out to him, bless him
jesus christ your poor neighbor lol
Umm.... thanks for sharing?
Tha fuck you just say?
*Diarrhea* was the name of his violent girlfriend.
Now that's a story.
I am truly astounded by this game that isn't on the store.
Soundtrack is amazing. The intro visuals are as well.
This is one of my biggest gripes with the transition from SNES to Playstation era. 2D was abandoned for 3D, which was still in its experimental phase. And so we never got games like Metal Warrior. Or normal games with arcade level graphics.
But I recently played Metal Warrior emulated and the intro made me think this was a Japanese exclusive game. But now hearing it's American and produced by LucasArts makes me appreciate it even more.
You wondered where this game was when it came out? My friends and I had it on permanent rental. We ended up each buying a copy we loved it so much. Easily one of my favorite games of the SNES era.
I was blessed as a kid to live close to a very well-stocked and maintained, independent, local video store. They had a giant selection of games and this one was rented many times. I remember playing it with the lads on weekends, especially the VS. mode.
I had so much fun renting this with friends. My favorite thing to do in VS was to jump out of my mech right after I beat them and sing a stupid song while I made my little guy fly up into the sky XD
I still own the cartridge to this day... don't have an SNES to play it, but I'm keeping the cartridge forever. Me and my buddy poured tons of hours playing head to head.
CYBERNATOR, MECH WARRIORS and U.N. SQUADRON 3 of my fav best SNES games.
Great game, though I find Cybernator/Valken to be a tighter experience overall. Also that one mission where you have to protect the battleship is damn freaking hard!
My brother and I rented this as soon as we saw it was from Lucas Arts just for the love of all the games we played on PC from them. Was an instant classic for us.
Your Arrested Development reference tells me that you are indeed ready 😂
Oooh I remember playing this as a kid. Mind you, a ROM of this game. I recognize that bipedal robot at 0:43. Good memories! Don't think I finished it though. Wonder if it's on steam. They've been adding a lot of retro games here and there.
I found this on ZSNES when I was in high school and loved it. I never saw this anywhere, and I was in Blockbuster or Babbage's or EB Games at least once a month lol. Cutscenes were pretty sweet, too.
This game is cool, I prefer it to Cybernator besides maybe the OST. Front Mission: Gun Hazard and Ranger X would be my fave 16-bit mech action games though
Excellent Arrested Development reference 😂
With a rereview of Cybernator and Metal Warriors, wonder if we'll complete the giant mech platformer trilogy with Front Mission: Gun Hazard?
So Titanfall and Lost Planet have that mechanic that made all the difference in Metal Warriors (jumping in and out of a mech). Coincidence? I think those designers were inspired by METAL WARRIORS
A good mech game that is NOT Japanese... back then, it was totally a surprise.
Brutally hard, but that's what Emulation and save states were invented for.
Have you talked about Front Mission: Gun Hazard yet? It is this game, but with Action RPG elements
I can't help but thinking about that Continue? episode where they were playing this game, while saying something smoke space weed, and vote against Space Mitt Romney III. lol
one absolute gem, this and Zombies ate my Neighbors were Lucas Arts for me, Mike Ebert really pushed the SNES to its limits
For me LucasArts was Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion and TIE Fighter. They didn't have much on console back in the day, just PC.
@@danbauer3669 yeah, most of the people just remembers the adventure games, I was more into the action and if it was also co-op then it was perfect
My next goal is trying to find this game! Thanks for the video!
Bill Chicago
I feel like we're already friends and you can come over to my house and play SNES anytime.
This was my favorite game when I was a kid. Would love to see M2 do a port/remaster.
