- Townsend, Tennessee is a great little town to visit with many things going on, including this "Old Timer's" Festival. Blue Grass music on stage and in every corner of the property of the welcome center.2014
When I was 12, I was fortunate enough to go to summer camp in the Appalachian mountains and it was the best summer of my life, I have longed to go back ever since. I am now 59, guess it's time to return to the best place in the country where the people are real and the wilderness is still wild. I still sing those songs I learned so long ago when I'm cooking. Thank you for sharing this lovely video.
Paul the best flat footer in the whole country. RIP dear Paul. We will miss seeing you dance & your socks.
When a man carries his own stage, he’s fixin’ to show up and show out!!!
That was like bringing cardboard back in the day for a break dancing battle LOL
@@chrisshields5448 🤣🤣🤣🤣...... it really was..... fat piece a cardboard...... a boombox and some Fat laced Adidas
You had me at fixin’ LOL
And he did! 😄
To be in that kind of shape at that age!
The man who brought his own board is Paul Shelnutt and he is perhaps the best clog dancer in the Appalachian Mountains.
He is the man, for sure.
Love this stuff. Hello from Ireland
@@tonymcgahan7272 Hey Tony. Greetings.
@@RogerRowe Hey Roger. Thanks for posting. I'm a big fan of Bluegrass. You can feel the connection with Traditional Irish music...
@@tonymcgahan7272 I agree.
I went on vacation in Tennessee in 2015 we stayed in Townsend Tennessee what wonderful people and also state 😎👍👍
So good to see the older folks having a good time. Enjoy life while we can! Bless your hearts.
And the young kids joining in and being passed down this great heritage.
The children trying to learn is wonderful and the elders are so good and fit for their ages well done guys
I know.. The one little girl was trying ..give her a year or 2 she will be cutting a rug
So enchanting to know that things like this still exist. A wholesome life style. Thank you!
When that guy brought on his own dance board it got real, you just knew the other where just backing dancers .
Wolfbbq BBQ clogging on concrete is really bad for the joints. He uses the wood as a shock absorber. Plus it sounds better.
THIS is why I go on “vacation” in Appalachia. Everyone participates, even if you’re 300lbs with arthritis. Or feet tapping from a wheelchair. Pick up what little work I can find, car sleep, tent squat, dumpster dive, whatever!
Your're a gem.. I hope you know that...
So fun to see people doing this traditional dance.
Yes ma'am had me smiling..
stumbled on this ...aint never seen this dancing before ...I'm hooked ...love love it ...I'll be watching way more often ....
It would do your heart good just to see sure innocent fun. Well done Folks.
Blue jacket doing a mighty fine job of it too!
Love the old guy’s fancy stockings and he’s going right to the end even when the youngsters have quit.
Amazingly enjoyable. The gentleman on the board, the guy with no shirt, and the little boy and his (Dad?) stole the show......................
I'm moving to Tennessee,, what a great music
And I thought I could dance, whew Paul has got it,really enjoyed this
They even have the little critters cutting the rug with them. Thumbs up
I had fun just watching these folks having fun!
As a Scot I love this. Good wholesome fun.
Scotland is where a ton of our music came from.
Thanks for it, and thanks for the fighting spirit. We're going to call on that in the days to come.
@@kathyleicester7306 Madam I wish you well in your future struggles, my heart is with all true Americans. May I add never ever forget where you came from, they are the roots of your land. May you live long and well. SLAINTE

Beyond fabulous. God was showing off when the Gentleman in the miss matched socks was made.
I loved this it so made me smile.
Australia.
That man is my dad. I miss him. I am glad he made you smile.
I can see these old timers going on to live well over a 100 and those little timers amazing
Beautiful and not forget to mention this fantastic song of ervin T. Rouse "orange blossom special".
The dude who brought his own board and warming up with the moonwalk was priceless
Man, google "buck dancing". The older gentleman is everywhere. He must go to every bluegrass festival.
Roger Rowe lol
Funny you say that, I was watching more and saw him on a lot of videos
Love his enthusiasm and spirit
Michael Lives on even through hillbillies.
I think he poured some chalk on his board..
That 'dude' is a master and great ambassor to his culture.
I was born and raised in the State of Missouri and my Father raised us kids up in playing Blue grass style music. but this clog dancing is really interesting.
This looks like a fun place to visit. Now I want to go....
Дуже цікаво і гарно. Отримав заряд енергії. Дякую.
The music just HITS you
Wonderful dance as it gets you up to move away with your feet just love this dancing well done to you all as you all fit
People Thank you
Absolutely love this. Can’t watch this without a smile. 😃 love it 🥰
Soooo....before break dancers in the 80's were bringing out their cardboard to break dance on.....Paul had this sheet of wood he would carry around and do his thing!?!!!!! This is awesome...shout out from South Texas!!!!
Nice to see the little ones trying to learn and participate!
Fortunate enough to spend a week in Knoxville on a motorcycle event. This is the real deal, wonderful music, wonderful people, felt right at home.
Yes sir! Hillbilly's for real.
The little kids trying to learn is so cute
Good old fashioned deep rooted American music. God Smiled on Tennessee
AMERICAN. LET. BRING. BACK. ENJOYMENT. FOR. OURS. SOULS
Texas love's Tennessee. We will never forget!
Thank you, and may God bless you, for your help.
Great to see the guy on the right hand side take time out with the wee boy, this is how our traditions are kept alive.
They were all good. But the old man had the stamina. But the young man who took his shirt off was equally great..but bowed out to the old man..this type of dancing takes stamina and you have to pace yourself as the old man showed brilliantly! Great fun video!
He wore a bunch of em' down and kept on doing it for a couple of hours.
@@RogerRowe Wow. I wish I could have been there to see it. This older man, I could tell he was proud of his heritage..as we all are..but I've always enjoyed this type of dance..ty for your reply!
BYOB - bring your own board.
The guy with the board is good but he is doing the cord version of the dance. Guy in blue who took off his shirt is really good. Doing the finger picking version of the dance. Wish I could do either.
These are my folk. We have lived in the southern part of the Appalachian Mountains for near damn 200 years. 80% of us are Scotch-Irish. The dance you see we call it clogging, it came from our Scotch-Irish ancestors, who mostly came over here during the Great Potato Famine. This is why our roots are a little different. More examples: Moonshine, Blue Grass, Accent, etc.
Yes sir.
And different words or pronunciations for words. Not many people know what Schotch-Irish actually is.
Thanks for the information, sir.
Oh my goodness, how wonderful!!!
I could watch him all day,
The guy with white hair and beard blew past all of them!!!! That's how you live till 100!!!! 👏👏👏💝
The greatest country in the world .
Yes sir!
That old timer is serious and good dancer!!! Wished I could do it..
Love music and specially bluegrass...
Such nice old days were wonderful
Gotta love East Tennessee! I’ll be driving out for our family’s annual Christmas in the Smoky’s next Saturday. I went to college at Carson Newman in Jefferson City and I love East Tennessee so much I go back twice a year! This here is real infectious and I love watching this
I concur with your sentiment 100%
Australia ☺
Wooow, he is a greater dancer. I would like to learn his style.
😍
Six year old clip and I just seen it today, 07.22.2020
I gotta say it made me smile ear to ear!
It was sweet and the Appalachia CLOGER tapped those feet like magic!
Culture is a beautiful thing.
Watching from Uganda 🇺🇬.
Bless them all for reminding me how to smile again.
Man, once they got going, they got going! Don't see too many young people out there though. I hope the tradition continues.
What a fabulous video can't get enough of watching it. The gentleman with the board was terrific and he wasn't even out of breath. The young man behind him was was amazing too. What a lovely town it must be to live in. Thank you all so very much for sharing your video with the world. More please I'm hooked. X. 😊😊😊😊🐱🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
This right here...a good ole time. Makes my roots sprout. I can see my Pappy and Mammy smiling down. God Bless Y’all.

I have had the pleasure of attending two of these events in Townsend and enjoyed a surprising amount o fun both times. great, friendly people, good music and of course the clogging....
Makes me want to move to Tennessee ! You don't see this kind of friends , people gathering doing a dance like this here in Kansas...
Love it! Go yellow socks! His endurance is something else!
Hi from Australia. Absolutely love this!
Skinny Santa is awesome, love watching him dance
I’m from Texas and enjoyed. Beautiful family tradition. God bless.
Love you to see the little kids learn in these dances🌻🧡
Absolutely wonderful lovely brilliant adorable "it must be a wonderful healthy atmosphere"
Imagine 60 years from now a bunch of old timers gather in this festival doing the floss
lol
It's heartwarming to see the small children in there and taking an interest. Ok,so they don't know what they're doing yet, but give them time and in a few years they'll be up there, flat footing with best of 'em. And so it continues...hopefully.
That man is fit for his age. Im in my 30s and i dont think i could dance like that or keep up with him. 👍👍
That's for sure.
Love it and seeing the children dancing as well
Back again and love it
Back again what a great day out
I ain't see no old timers ...but I'd love to see this again ...

Gota love what the scots Irish brought to America I'm proud of my heritage 🇺🇲🇮🇪🏴
Thank you my Ancestors !
@pack_leader 1989. this would have it's origins in welsh or english clogdance. fiddle reel music from scotland.
That old guy is old on looks but young man in heart and soul, he is killing any sickness coming like arthritis etc
Wow!!!
Back home where your only concern is if Paul finally gonna ware through that sheet of wood this week or not
Hahaha...So many people know who Paul is. I had no idea the day I recorded this video. That's awesome.
This is so cool!!! Great people and great music. My heritage
I'm Mexican. And I strongly believe I can dance this.
Similar to many Mexican folk dances.
Then git after it.
Immer wieder schön anzusehen.
Grüße aus Deutschland
Love the old timers and the young girl and all in between. What talent - what fun. And, can't forget the musicians. 🤩♥️
Does anyone remember Commie Tipton an old time banjer picker from around Townsend, TN. Many years ago a sat in his front room and listened to him play Cumberland Gap in the F tuning. Hattie Stoneman used the same banjer tuning when she recorded it. I've never heard anyone else use that tuning for that tune. I wish I could locate some of Commie's kin to find out what happened to his banjer after he passed away. I wish I would have had my tape recorder with me, but hindsight's 20/20. RIP Commie and thanks for the memories.
That's cool!
Never seen this video b4 but I truly enjoyed it much respect to all of these people they sure got down wow
All of the dancers are great but the young man who took off his shirt should win the blue ribbon for sure. My Daddy, back in the l940's thru the l970's would get up when just the right music was on the radio and he'd start "The Old fashion Hoe Down" dancing. , very much like the young guy in this video. He used his arms, his entire body was into the found and he would stomp the floor so hard we were afraid he'd end up falling right threw the floor. I haven't seen anyone who could even compete with my dear old dad at the Hoe Down. I really enjoyed watching these guys... brings back wonderful memories of my childhood. I hope Dad is still dancing in Heaven.
He gave up. Quitters aren't winners.
Technically the old guy with his own board is doing traditional buck dancing. The others are clogging and flatfootin'. Most are doing just the basic step. It takes alot of energy. The steps and style of dance is to put the ficus and energy into the feet and legs while the arms are still and typically held close to the body, not flinging arms around.
Dancing on a board or a low wooden platform comes straight from Irish & Scottish traditional dances. Scottish and Irish people who settled heavily through the Appalachian mountains retained their music and dances. And the style retained the traditional rhythm and original steps.
The young dude couldn't last because he's moving his upper body too much ... so much he's wrecking his ability to keep the pace and balance and timing of the lower body. The steps naturally lent to minimal upper body movement. The fast taps and footwork and legwork takes so much energy, focus and precision that you need to keep your arms under control. And large upper body movement actually throws off the rythm, balance and timing the lower body.
That's why he keeps losing his rythem and balance.
Let the legs do the work. The arms only move slightly.
Appalachian flatfootin', clogging, and buck dancing come from Irish and English dances were done on a flat board outside or on a wooden platform the constructed outside. Or inside on a wooden floor.
And the point is to make the clapping/clogging sound with heel and toe taps just loud enough to hear them and still hear the music.
Kaleido Scope Awesome information. I'm from an Irish background and I LOVE this type of clog foot dancing. It literally brings tears to my eyes. So I will reread your info.
They look like they are enjoying themselves, clean fun....
I pray I get to work in Townsend, seems like some good ol folk.
Some of these dudes are freaking good......fun to watch
The guy in yellow is straight up gansta!
You think he’s good here.....look up Grandpa move that dope.

Pop pop bring his own board!!
Looks like everyone is having good clean dancing fun !!!, 💃🕺💃🕺💃🕺💃🕺👣👣
I would love to go there !!,
😍👏👏👏👏✌👍
it is impressive and wonderful to see the different musical infuences of several European countries in the American continent, the United States, Mexico as an example .... here, a variant is what we call "zapateado norteño" or the "Polka Norteña" ... what a wonder music is, one of the most important achievements of the human being in the world!
Thank you for appreciating humanity's various cultures :)
There is also alot of African influence on southern music. The banjo is an African instrument. Music is what shapes the world. Music is a living evolving thing. Without it we would be nothing.
Music is the language we all can understand.😊
So true brother
Im italian american. I lived near sonora. The culture of the chicano community was more familiar. The Mariachi made me drink more!! The abuela smacking me for not eating, reminded me so much of home and eased my homesickness. The norteño dances were fun to watch as the sunday dinners were enjoyable.
Great ! Congratulations from France !
There’s that old fella again he’s every where
That's the heart of America!
God bless y'all!
kids dancing with mum & dad, fantastic I love it.hope to make over some day & watch.xxxx
Back when we used to get together and dance...😔
