- My childhood hope chest got a complete makeover!
This lane chest was given to me by my dad when I was probably nine or ten years old. I had it with me until I moved away when I was about 18 and I haven’t seen it since. I won’t do the math, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve seen it. Close to 35 years!
After my dad passed recently, it was time to pick this up and give it a makeover so that I could find a place for it in my home. I always knew I wanted to keep it, but I just never had the place for it and over the course of so many years I never had the skill set to be able to give it a new look. Now I do!
This was painted and a beautiful creamy white, and after removing some of the details, the old hardware I wanted it to have just a very simplistic design.
I removed the old crumbling base and built new base out of Maple and a stain in a color that would make it look like driftwood.
Now that it is all done, I love being able to look at this piece every day, and it brings back such great memories from my childhood.
I have a bunch of heirlooms from my dad that will be stored in this chest.
Painted in Organic White by Farmhouse Evolution.

Funny, I just picked up my cedar chest from ‘92 last week and it looks similar. I plan on refinishing it soon too. I may have to try a base as well. It looks great!

Beautiful job! I did see on several other channels that you're supposed to take the lock off for safety reasons.
If I were selling it, I definitely would. But this is mine and going in my house. I have no small children and I hope my grown kids behave… 😊

Waxing cedar is fine as far as general wood care goes. If you wish to restore the propers of cedar itself, a light sanding for an indoor cedar like that can bring it back to its original state. You can also apply diluted cedarwood essential oil or a commercial cedar oil product.

Cedar this old wont have much smell left so it doesn't matter that you waxed it.
